Help configuring mail so a user can send mail from outside network via IMAP

Using OS X 10.4.11. IMAP and POP3 are enabled and when a user uses IMAP from within the network they have no trouble but one of our people moved to a different office outside the network.
I can configure Outlook to use IMAP and see all her folders and get mail but when she tries to send I get the message "Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname" This same error comes up when I configure it for POP3.
She could use squirrelmail but Outlook is nicer for folders, contacts, etc. and since she will be at this different office for a long time I would like to get it working.
I assume it has to be a configuration on the server end but I don't have a clue where to look. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

This typically indicates a misconfiguration on the server.
You've probably built your server by setting postfix's 'myhostname' parameter to something like 'mail'. This should be the fully-qualified hostname of the server, e.g. 'mail.mydomain.com'.
You can change this in Server Admin, or by editing /etc/postfix/main.cf, or via the command line:
postconf -e 'myhostname = mail.mydomain.com'
Note, for the record, you don't send mail via either IMAP or POP. Those are receive protocols. All outgoing mail uses SMTP.

How can i restrict what users can and can not send mail outside mi local domain ?? Without editing postfix ??
    Tx

Without editing postfix? pretty much impossible.
Anything you do is going to change posftix's confguration, and you're asking for options beyond Apple's Server Admin GUI, therefore you going to have to do some under-the-hood tweaking of postfix.
(just to be pedantic, using Server Admin ultimately edits postfix's configuration files, so what's your reluctance here?)
As for your request, there are so many ways of implementing this. The 'right' option depends on more details than you've specified. For example, how are you determining which users can/cannot send outside mail? Is it a fairly static list, or does it change frequently?
The only option that comes close to not editing postfix is authentication. By default, only authenticated users can send outgoing mail, but anyone can send mail to a local address on the server, so that gives you a simple approach - have the permitted users configure their mail client with a username and password for SMTP, and have the non-permitted users leave the SMTP username/password empty.
That's hardly foolproof, though - if any 'non-permitted' user enters their username and password they automatically fall into the 'permitted' group. That may or may not be sufficient for your need.
There are other options, though, including IP address range checking, a permitted senders list, port options, and more. It's just a matter of how much you want to tweak postfix's configuration.

Sometimes deleting the account and then re-creating it can solve this issue
Write down all the information in accounts before doing this
Highlight the account on the left and click the minus button
Then click the plus button to add the new account and follow the prompts

  • User can send but not receive emails

    Hello!
So I've just set up a band new server from scratch and am having trouble getting the email service to work 100%.
My dns is all correct, forward and reverse. The output of a changeip -checkhostname command is perfect. My domain name and its public ip address both point to each other fine and my A, MX and CNAME records have all been set at the domain vendor to point to my particular server.
I've made one user in WGM and that user can send emails no problem. But when I try to send an email back (or reply to the original message), this is the error I receive in the bounce message:
<[email protected]>: Host or domain name not found. Name service error
for name=server.jinniferules.com type=A: Host not found
    Reporting-MTA: dns; server.example.com

    Final-Recipient: rfc822; [email protected]
    Original-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected]
    Action: failed
    Status: 5.4.4
Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; Host or domain name not found. Name service error
for name=server.jinniferules.com type=A: Host not found
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!

Solved my own problem: what was needed was to add a "server" entry to the A-records list that pointed to the IP.
    Sheesh! Haha.

  • TS3276 I can receive emails, but I cannot send emails. This just started happening. I have an iPhone and I can send emails from my phone fine. It's just not working on my Macbook. Every time I try to send an email it goes straight to my outbox. Can anyone

I can receive emails, but I cannot send emails. This just started happening. I have an iPhone and I can send emails from my phone fine. It's just not working on my Macbook. Every time I try to send an email it goes straight to my outbox. Can anyone help?

Thank you for heading me in the right direction.  I reset my Mail account for Outgoing Mail Server to outbound.att.net:(customer ID)@att.net (instead of smtp.att.yahoo.com, per Apple's online troubleshooting information).   I'm not sure what "(Offline)" means when it appears at the end of my Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)??  In the Advanced box I clicked on "Use custom port:  465" and checked "Use Secure Sockets Layer."  Authentication:  Password; I have correct User Name and Password put in.  After doing all this, when I try to send emails again today, they go directly to the Outbox and sit there.
What's curious is that my first sent email this morning did go out using the Outgoing Mail Server, smtp.att.yahoo.com: (customer ID)@att.net(Offline) but subsequent emails I tried to send with this server were rejected with the message:  "Cannot send message using the server smtp.att.yahoo.com (etc.).  The SMTP server doesn't support TLS(SSL) on port 587.  Verify your account settings and try again."  That's when I tried resetting my Outgoing Mail Server to outbound.att.net (etc.), as mentioned above, and was unsuccessful in sending out any further emails.  I guess my next step is to contact my email service provider, AT&T, and see if they can help me.  Thanks, again, for taking the time to respond and for giving me your input!  Much appreciated!

  • I no longer can send iMessages from my iPhone (iOS 6.0.1) to one of my contacts.

Started about a week ago.  I can send them from my Mac, but not my phone.  Other iPhone users are receiving iMessages from me. Just not this one person.  I also note that in my contact info for her on my phone, I cannot select iPhone as her mobile device. Just "mobile".  She has an iPhone.  Very puzzled as to why this is occurring now.  Any thoughts?

Try this. I don't know I it will help but it solved a similar issue I had a while back. In the messages conversation with this person tap the time at the top of your screen to scroll to the top of the page and tap Contact. Are the messages being sent to the phone number or the email?
In my situation they where being sent to their actual email account and therefore where not received. This was the fix
From the contact of this person scroll down and tap Send Message then select the phone number from the options that pop up. Send a message and then check the Message app. In my situation that created a second conversation with that person which went to their phone number. I delete the old conversation so as I didn't get confused.
Long winded, I know. Not an easy thing to explain. Hope that helps

  • Now you can SEND MMS from the iPhone!!! (UK Only)

There is a WebApp called 'O2mms' (http://o2mms.net) which has been out for a while that allows O2 iPhone users to view MMS messages that have been sent to their phone without going through the long process of the O2 Portal.
This has just been updated so that O2 iPhone users can now SEND MMS from their phone via the native Mail.app on the iPhone.
It works out at around 37p per message, but the creator, Ross McKilliop, is working at bringing the price down (you pay securely via PayPal from your iPhone)
I have tried and tested it and am happy to recommend it
