Help Configuring MBP

It's time for a new computer I will use 99% for work.  I am currently using a MBP circa 2007.  I am forced to run Parallels to run specific work related windows apps.  Other than that, I run MS Office for Mac 2011, Adobe Acrobat and a few other apps.  My main issue today is that by the time I get Parallels running, and get 30 to 40 Word documents open (I have to have all files open for comparison, cutting & pasting and such), 10 to 20 spreadsheets, Outlook and more, my old MBP spins forever and is just dogging along.
So....the first question is: is the MBP my best choice?  I must have two monitors and the MBP 15 inch screen is "ok".   Would prefer two 27 inch monitors (and may end up doing this through the Matrox DualHead2Go.  But maybe I should be considering a Mac Pro Desktop (and use my new 27inch iMac at home to access it remotely when needed)  or Mac Air (for even greater portability) or maybe even another iMac.  The choices!! LOL!
Let's assume the 15 inch MBP is the choice for the moment.  MY QUESTION IS:  is there any downside to saving a few dollars on the configuration and order it with the bare bones drive (500GB drive) and swap it on my own for a 256GB or 512GB SSD Drive.  I called Apple and asked specifically about the 256GB and 512GB SSD Drives.  After speaking with four people (each time moving up the latter), they had no idea what SATA level the drives were, nor what the read/write rates were.  Sad!
I have seen some smoking fast SATA III SSD drives from OWC and Intel, but I want to be sure that it will work in DVD bay or the HD bay.  What size of SSD (2.5 inch? 1.8 inch? etc.) do I need to buy for which bay?  Is there an option to remove the DVD Drive in the Macbook Pro and swap it for a SSD or move the standard HD to the DVD drive bay and put the SSD in the slot where the HD was?
Lastly - any recommendations on which SSD works best with the MBP?  Intel 510 seems to get a lot of decent talk....The OCZ 240 GB Vertex 3 SATA III 6.0GB/S also gets lots of attention.
Confused!
Any help would be appreciated.

Many of the SSDs Apple has used have been Toshibas, but there is no assurance when you order one from Apple that you will get any make or model in particular. Apple buys SSDs (and hard drives, for that matter) from various manufacturers from time to time, selecting them on the basis of internal criteria that are not published. Because the drive in one new machine may not be the same one used in another, specs are not published either, and sales and support personnel have no more information about them than you and I do. If you want a particular SSD or specification, order your MBP with the stock factory hard drive, and buy and install the SSD of your choice yourself.

  • Problem in Application Help Configuration in Solution Manager

    Hi Experts,
Here I facing one problem during Application Help configuration..
When I am going through application help for Solman Configuration it's taking me to standard erp help..
Where as in SR13, under PlainHtmlHttp,
In path tab I had given <b>saphelp_sm40/helpdata</b> for solution manager document.
But for other standard t-code it's giving actual application help.
where for SMSY,SOLAR01 etc i am not getting the application help.
    Looking for advices.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sumanta Chatterjee

    Dear Sumanta,
This depends on how you want to (or how you can) use this http://help.
    sap.com site.
At first you must be aware of the different areas on this site, these
areas have different URL structures, for example:
    - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2004 <<< for mySAP ERP
    - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_47x200  <<< for R3 Enterprise
    - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04    <<< for SAP NetWeaver 04
    - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_sm32    <<< for SAP Solution Manager 3.2
The main problem is that in the area "http://help.sap.com/saphelp_sm32"
there is only online documentation for the Solution Manager
    functionality.
Can you please check the table SBAON_CCHK with transaction SE16.
    The following record must exist:
    MANDT COMPONENT                NAME_EN
    xxx   ST                       Solar Help
If this record does not exist, please create this record manually.
This should help resolve the issue.
    Regards
    Amit

  • Need Flash Help - configuring AIrtight Simple Viewer Pro

I need some help configuring the Airtight Interactive simple viewer pro, which requires flash. I am a complete beginner with flash, and I am reluctant to undertake the learning curve, though I am very tech saavy.
My ideal would be to locate someone who could do this FOR me, though resources are very limited for this project. Any suggestions of where I might connect with someone interested in doing this?
Alternately, I could undertake it myself, with someone qualified to coach me rather thouroughly through the whole process. That could be offline, or here where others could benefit from the thread. If someone offers this, I will post the precise details of what I need. The project is medium challenging, not extremely complex, but more than very basic.
    Many Thanks.

    Hi:
When you create the simpleviewer slideshow with iPhoto's plugin there should be a folder created on your HD that contains the items seen in the screenshot below:
The folder was named simpleviewer because that's what I named it during the export from iPhoto. That's the same folder as I refer to as "Slideshow folder". It can be whatever you name it when exporting from iPhoto. Upload that folder to your iDisk/Web/Sites folder as shown below:
In the iFrame code use the following URL to the index.html file inside the simpleviewer folder:
    http://web.me.com/YourMMe_AccountName/simplerviewer/index.html
    That should do it.

  • Need help configuring VPN on RV120W Router (WiTopia VPN)

    Hello Cisco Community,
I need some help configuring a VPN from WiTopia on my RV120W router. I am trying to make it so that if any device connects to the router it can automatically connect to the VPN from WiTopia.
Please note that the VPN plan includes PPTP, L2TP, & IPSEC VPN types.
Is this possible? And if so, how?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
If WiTopia is providing only client to gateway VPN, where WiTopia is the gateway allowing connections to clients, than you will not be able to configure RV120 to connect to it. RV120 in its VPN configurations cannot be configured to be a client.
The only tunnel where can play the role of the connecting part is IPSec gateway to gateway, when in the IKE policy the Direction type is Initiator and the Exchange mode is Aggressive. And you will need to receive all additional configuration parameters from WiTopia -the Encryption, Authentication Algorithm, PFS, SA lifetime and so on. But this means that WiTopia have to provide gateway to gateway VPN connection.
    Regards,
    Kremena

  • My macbook pro's screen constantly goes dim. I have set the energy saver settings for battery to 7 mins but it goes dim if the period of inactivity is less than 7 mins. Please help.  MBP 13" OSX 10.6.8 (2011)

My macbook pro's screen constantly goes dim. I have set the energy saver settings for battery to 7 mins but it goes dim even if the period of inactivity is less than 7 mins. Please help.  MBP 13" OSX 10.6.8 (2011)

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.

  • Help my MBP C2D is very hot when runing........

help my MBP C2D is very hot when runing titan quest game on vista OS. anyone have any solution for it? hot till burn my finger and i was in a air condition room....
    MBPC2D   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Window Vista

MBP's just run vicious hot. i have woken up too many nights with mine burning my crotch. has to be some long term effects from that... you need to just manage the problem by keeping it raised on a cooling platform. i have gone as far as filling a ziplock baggie with crushed ice, and running the machine on the ice pack. best to be sure there is air that can pass below the machine when operating.

  • Please Help! MBP shutting off when plugged in, now not recognizing MagSafe Adapter

I started seeing this problem a few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro just shut off spontaneously while watching a video full-screen. I turned it back on and the problem went away for a while. But now, the shut-downs happen more frequently. It doesn't matter if the MBP is running off of the battery or if its running off of the AC cord, it will just shut off. No warning. No standard shut-down process, everything just stops and a balck screen shows up. After it shuts off, it takes a few seconds to get it to restart, and when it does, the computer's date and time will be reset to some date in 2000. Very strange, I've had this computer for a year and I know people with the same model that have had no such problems. The battery is at 168 cylces (I use this for school, so it was being used everyday throughout the last two semesters), and the Condition is listed as Normal in the System profiler, so I doubt the problem is with the battery, but I could be wrong. I've seen posts about the RAM/PRAM causing the date/time resets. Nevertheless, the MBP has been running normally on the battery, battery life is still the same length of time as it was when I first got the computer, and runs smoothly. Up until last night, the AC MagSafe Adapter was still working, so I only used that as the power source. Everything was fine, but the MBP shut off once or twice while it was plugged in within the last month or so, but the AC would still have a green light, indicating the computer was still recognizing the power source. Now, I can't get the MagSafe to be rocognized at all. The computer is running on battery only, and I've tried resetting the SMC, but I'm unsure if it worked since the MagSafe is still unrecognized. When its plugged in, the System Profiler says it is not connected and not charging.
I'm running on Mac OS X 10.6.8, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with a 4GB memory (of which less that half is used). Computer usage is low, so its not like I'm running several programs at once, at most, its two or three at a time, for short periods. My MBP is a 13" aluminum body, doesn't seem to be overheating, has worked fine after long periods of being on and getting hot, I always let it cool down after I feel it getting too warm.
Please help if you can! Thank you!

  • Need Help Configuring New AP Express N

    Here's my current setup.
    1. 1TB TC Dual Band (newest model)
    2. 4 wireless G devices (2-Tivo's, PS3, iPhone)
    3. 3 wireless N devices (2 MBP's, Mac Mini)
    4. Airport Express N (AEn) (not yet configured or connected). New, still in the box.
I want to extend my wireless network because 1 of the N devices (Mac Mini) is in another couple rooms away from the TC and the reception is GREAT (5 bars), however the internet speed is poor and good (it fluctuates). Doing an internet SpeedTest it goes from 1 mbps to 14 mbps.
    Questions:
    1. Will the new AEn help with the internet speed for the Mini , if I use it to extend my network?
    2. Will adding the AEn to my network drag down the other 2 N devices (slower network)?
2A. If yes by how much?
    3. Will the AEn work in the N mode Only or Only mixed mode (a,g,n)?
    4. Will the AEn cause problems with the TC because it's Dual Band?

    1. Will the new AEn help with the internet speed for the Mini , if I use it to extend my network?
No. Using the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), will have no affect on your Internet connection speed. However, it should help your local wireless speed by providing a stronger signal to the Mac Mini.
    2. Will adding the AEn to my network drag down the other 2 N devices (slower network)?
    No.
    3. Will the AEn work in the N mode ONLY or only mixed mode (a,g,n)?
The AXn is a single-band wireless router. It can operate in either the 2.4 or 5 GHz radio band at a time.
    4. Will the AEn cause problems with the TC because it's Dual Band?
No. You can use the AXn to extend either the dual-band TC's 2.4 or 5 GHz radio.

  • Reality check -Help with MBP 13' purchase

    Hello guys,
I live in a country without Apple store, all information I get is from the Internet.Hopefully someone could help me. I would like to know if it is worth buying 2011 13' macbook pro I need reality check. I'm a photographer and I use Aperture and CS5 photoshop every day. Will it work smoothly on MBP 13' 2011 ??
    - I have 2006 15' MBP works very well, but a bug crawled into my LCD, and bugger died there nicely in the middle.
I would like to have, good future proof machine that would last another 5 years.
Core i5 or I7?  I can not afford large ssd ( I need min. 500GB ssd ). In many forums, people talk about redesign in late 2011 ..etc.
    Which model should i buy?

I surprised nobody answered you yet. If your main goal is working with photography or photos, you should get the Macbook Pro 15" 2011 i7 model. The 13" MBP has a really low screen resolution compared to all other laptops these days 1200x800. The 15" model is 1440x900 in the stock configuration. The 13" does not have enough real estate on the screen to be useful for photo editing. Also, it lacks a discrete graphics card. You must rely solely on the Intel HD 3000 internal graphics.
If you get either 15" model, the cheaper one has an AMD HD 6490m discrete card and the high end model has the AMD HD 6750m. You can still use the Intel HD 3000 to save battery life, but the 15" models give you more pixels on the screen and much better graphics processing.
The new Intel HD 3000 is not bad, it is "good enough"... but "good enough" for now will be out of date "sooner than later". The 15 inch models provide much more flexibility and are much more future proof. I owned the original Core Duo Macbook in 2006 and it had the same 1280x800 resolution 5 years ago. It was never enough for serious work.
Also you could consider the 2011 Macbook Air if you only care about price and don't want the discrete graphics card. There is a 13" model with 1440x900 resolution and it has the option for i7 and comes standard with a 128GB or 256GB SSD on the top model. All models except the lowest end have 4GB of RAM standard too.

  • Help configuring airport for Windows 7 using Basecamp

I installed windows 7 on Basecamp but I can't figure out how to configure it to work wirelessly with my airport base station. If this helps I'm using an AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x93) card that came with the MBP.
I know very little about windows so please explain simply if possible.

  • Help! MBP froze at windows install

so I just learned that i cannot install xp on my new MBP! How come my friend successfully installed it on her iMAC? maybe MBP and iMAC are different...
But my MBP still froze at the black screen saying "setup is checking your computer's hardware configuration", literally for hours!!!
I tried to force shut down and reboot, but it just came back to the black screen.. How can I save my poor MBP?? Please help!!
    Thank you!

Some new Macs require Windows 7.  They don't contain the drivers for XP. See - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410
Your friend probably has an older iMac like mine. I've installed XP at various points and it worked fine.

  • Help configuring OS X Server for use with SuperDuper!

Hi, I am trying to configure my Mac Mini running Mavericks and OS X Server and my MBP so that I can make SuperDuper! backups from the internal drive in the MBP to an external drive connected to the Mac Mini. I would like to be able to make a connection wirelessly over the LAN so that I can configure automatic scheduled backups. Can anyone help me with this? I am inexperienced with Server and have not been able to get SuperDuper to locate the external drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can't do that. "SuperDuper" doesn't work over a network. "Carbon Copy Cloner" does.

  • Need help configuring Aiport Extreme A1034 to optimize network signal.

Greetings, I am a very loyal mac user from back in the days of the Quadra 650. I have torn apart and fixed most macs for the last 13, but I must say configuring this wireless network has got me stumped. Any help would be gladly appreciated.
I went from a ibook 1 Ghz with a plastic case to a aluminum powerbook g4 1.67 to find out that the metal case greatly diminished the computers ability to receive a wifi signal from my Rv park. I then decided to buy an Airport Extreme A1034 that has the antenna port and then bought a Hawking 15db directional antenna. My intention was to have the Airport Base station receive the 802.11b wifi signal sent out from the office of the RV park through the Hawking antenna, and then have the base station take that signal it received and send that high speed wifi signal to the airport card in my Powerbook G4. Sounds simple enough, I thought it would be. I have found that using Airport set up assistant doesn't give me that option. I then proceeded to get into the workings of the Airport Admin Utility. I have found myself ready to pull my hair out trying to configure the 6 different tabs being, Airport , Internet, Network, Port Mapping, Access control, and WDS.
I do know that everything in the Airport tab is correct. The big problem I think is between the Internet, Network and WDS tabs. It seems that the Airport base station was basically made to have a high speed connection plugged into it via ethernet and then the base station broadcasts to host computers such as my PowerBook G4. My initial thought was to connect via Airport WDS in the internet tab and then set my powerbook to connect directly to the base station through the airport card. I read up on this via Apples Designing Airport networks that came on the Airport installation CD. It talked in detail about setting up the WDS tab to do something like I want but it still involves a hard wired ethernet connection at the start of it. I have also played around extensively with the Network control panel and the sharing control panel , I thought about turning the airport card inside my powerbook into a software or virtual base station and then try some sort of WDS relay. Through all this I had the Airport extreme go none responsive on me and not letting me log in. That's another story of 10 hours of **** fixing it, but i did. Even the reset button stopped working for a while. As of now I can access everything everywhere. I also have ALL the IP addresses Hardware(MAC) address, subnet masks and router addresses for every location in this proposed wireless chain. I just need someone to end this stressful nightmare. They say you learn through trial and error, that is how I learned most of my computer skills over the decades, that and Applecare certified tech training many years ago, But it doesn't help anyone if I stick a large knife through my base station. I can provide a phone number if your willing to call. My email is [email protected] . If your in the San Diego area, I can get ya free passes to the nudist colony where I live, if your in for a new adventure in turn for setting up this network for me. Check out http://www.deanzasprings.com . its where I live.
    Rich

    1. First, can someone confirm that the Extreme card be used as a WDS main base?
Sorry, but no you cannot use the AirPort Extreme card in a WDS as either a main, relay or remote base station. It does not support this function.

  • Need help configuring Cisco/Linksys wireless router to extend wi-fi signal to living room

My U-verse wireless gateway is in the back of our house. We live in an old 1920's home with solid wood walls. For our macbooks, we get a pretty decent signal, but my wife's iPad 2 get's poor wi-fi speeds. I bought a Cisco/Linksys WRT160N wireless N broadband router. I have a wired connection in my living room (going to a 4 port switch) then connected to my DVR. I tried hooking up the new router but ended up getting no signal on the iPad. In fact, it caused other issues. I ended up disconnecting it and re-booting my gateway. All came back fine. This wireless router replaces a similar unit that went out in after a power failure, so I know this can be done, but I forget exactly how I confiured the old one. I would like it to "extend" my signal to the living room, but I am also willing to create a new network (different SSID). Do I need to turn of DHCP? Are there any web sites that can assist me in configuring the router? I wish I didn't have to deal with this. The signal from the RG is great when you are in the back room (20+ down). But my wife gets about 3 down on her iPad in the living room. Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
I was doing some research on how this can be done. It does not appear there is an option in the Cisco router to set it up as an access point, but there are several options you can do to extend your network.
The first thing you can do is just set it up as a router behind router setup, and you will just have two separate networks. Make sure the DHCP pool does not conflict with the U-verse's gateway of 192.168.1.x.
The second thing you can do is connect the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on your Cisco router instead of using the internet port. This should make it work like a smart switch.
With both setups, you want to probably change the SSID, network key, and wireless security settings to the same thing for wireless roaming abilities. That way, anyone that configures their wireless connection will be connected to both networks. Just make sure the wireless channels are not the same, and I would suggest having them at least 5 apart.
    Hope this helps.
