Help! confused re: Photos album AND iPhoto folder

Perhaps a simple question: I have a MacBook Air. It is out of memory. I have a big digital photos folder (in PHOTOS).  I use iPhoto.  When i set it up, and add subsequent pics, i go to iphoto>File>Import >Import to Library. THis brings the photos into iPhoto.
The issue is i now have a very big iPhoto folder and a very big Digital Photos library. Something seems wrong about this. How should I solve this so i free up critically needed space on this tiny solid state drive?  (Am i doing the same thing wrong with my MUSIC too? See below...
Thanks!!

Thanks, Larry - makes sense.
Few tactical questions -  If i go in and UNcheck "copy items to the iphoto library, i assume that disables that library and the 47 GB as seen in the picture on my original post. However, what are the ramifications? Does that undo all the folders/albums i've created? or iphoto pics that i imported from iphone that are not in my DIGITAL PHOTOS FOLDER master folder on my computer?
I can also get rid of Picasa but would hate to as i also have photo albums set up there, have done hours of facial recognition data loading (identifying who is who), etc...

  • Help with Importing Photo Albums from Iphoto

I have created a bunch of albums in iphoto and wish to transfer them to my ipod. However, when i go to the photos tab of itunes when my ipod is plugged in and i try to select Sync from Iphoto it says that i have 0 photos in iphoto. i have tried selecting individual folders of photos to import and that works just fine, but i want to be able to select the albums that i already created in iphoto.
    thanks for your help

Apologies, you're right, it should be albumdata.xml.
Have a read of this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=778068&tstart=0
About 2/3'rds of the way down, DaveE has the following post:
    - View your albumdata.xml file in some text editor, like TextEdit.
    - Do a Find (cmd f) for "List of Keywords"
    - The XML under that looks kind of like this:
    <dict>
    <key>1</key>
    <string>Favorite</string>
    <key>6</key>
    <string>Birthday</string>
    <key>3</key>
    </dict>
You will probably have more keywords, this is just an example. But see the format - everything that has <something> ends with </something>.
When I had the problem, the example above looked like:
    <dict>
    <key>1</key>
    <string>Favorite <key>6</key>
    <string>Birthday</string>
    <key>3</key>
    </dict>
Notice the line return and </string> are missing for "Favorite". This happened to one of my keywords, and I don't know what caused it, but I deleted that keyword (and the one after it) from within iPhoto's preferences, and typed them in again.
The problem went away. Maybe some bogus character got into the keywords to make the XML go bad.
So try to use the method above to identify which keyword might have a problem, rather than go on a witch hunt and waste a lot of time. Of course, your problem could be different from mine entirely, but my iLife apps had the same problem you described.
Try it and see if it helps.

Trying to scan photos from my photo album to a folder on my desktop.  Have been trying to figure out for hours.  Seems very complicated and cumbersome.  Can anyone help?  It's got to be much quicker (fewer key strokes) and simpler than what I've been able to discover.

Open the file, parse it, populate an ArrayCollection or XMLListCollection, and make the collection the DataGrid dataProvider:

Help! I used to upload photos via ios and it was always published up to my 5th photos, but on the 6th, it just go to ios photos album and was not published on my fb's timeline...

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Hi, I have this problem too, it is SO frustrating and makes me never want to use iPhoto again! I live abroad and want to send a photo album to Canada but my credit card billing address is in the US and apparently shipping and billing addresses must match. I have already spent DAYS and DAYS making the album. There must be another company that allows shipping to Canada with a US credit card. Anybody have any suggestions?

  • I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

You do not move the albums - you move the entire iphoto library intake as a single entity
Make sure your external drive is formatted Ma OS extended (journaled) - then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How to transfer photo albums and edits done on iPad to iPhoto on Mac?

I created a photo album on my iPad. I had over 1000 pictures, and out of that I created a selection of 100. I edited and enhanced these 100. When I import the photos to the mac, I open iPhoto and get all the pictures imported. I can find all the individual pictures on iPhoto on the Mac. However the photo album and all the different edits done on the iPad are missing. Does anyone know how to make this transfer? Thanks!

This Knowledge Base Article looks like it addresses your issue. Also see this post.

  • Is there a way to transfer all of my photos in my iPhone's Photo Albums and Events to my new macbook?

My MacBook's hardrive failed. My only backup for iPhoto is on my iPhone. I bought a new MacBook Pro and I'd like to restore all the Photo Albums and Events from my iPhone. Is there a 3rd party app that is capable of this?
I downloaded iMacsoft to transfer music, books, etc. But it will only transfer photos in my iPhone's Camera Roll.

Are these photos on your iPhone?  Can you actually see them?  If so, then iCloud should see them as well.  All else fails, plug in the iPhone via a USB cable into the new Mac and iPhoto will launch showing you what photos you can import in.
Again, the old photos in question MUST be on the iPhone (i.e. you at one time sync'd your entire photo library to your iPhone, which to my knowledge also makes it available to the iCloud backup if you have enough room).
No, it is not easy to get synced photos back to the Mac. An iCloud backup does not include the synced photos nor the Photo Stream photos. See:
    iCloud: Backup and restore overview
One way to save the synced photos back to the Mac is to save them to the Camera Roll. This requires extra space on the device and much tapping, because it is not easy to save all photos at once to the Camera Roll. It would be easier with iPhoto iOS. Here you can share the the synced photos to iTunes and then save them using iTunes photo sharing on your Mac. In iPhoto you can select ranges of photos to share - much less tapping required.  See:  http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/#blnk7d8f763e
Use your photos in any app by saving them to the Camera Roll.
Import photos directly into iPhoto or Aperture on your computer.
Save photos to your computer using iTunes.
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap > iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • Lost original photos/albums in iPhoto 2

Last week the photo albums in iPhoto vanished...when I was able to find them by stumbling around the hard drive they didn't contain original pix--only pointers to the original pix. In addition, I could never track down all of the originals to help put them back into iPhoto and start rebuilding albums.
    Couple of questions:
    1) Some of the original pix were never deleted but I can't find them. Why not?
    2) I recently bought a Lacie drive to serve as a backup. How do I find the pictures on the backup? What folder are they in?

    Ken:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How did you perform the backup and with what software? Look/search on your external HD for a folder title "iPhoto Library". If you find it that may be your entire library. Open it up and see if it looks like this. Do not move anything around or rename anything (see Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder). If it is your library can copy it back to your Pictures folder, replacing the new, empty library there. Now open iPhoto and you should have your library back.
If you don't have your library intact you can do a Finder search of your external HD with the following criteria: Name contains .jpg and Size is greater than 50 KB. That will find all full sized image files on your external HD. You can tell where they are by clicking on one in the search results and checking out the path to the file.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • How do I rename a photo in the iphoto folder?

OK, so I know that you can change the name of a photo while in iphoto by simply pressing the "i" button at the bottom left, but that doesn't change the actual name of the file.
And I know that I can do that by going to Share-Export-Use Title and then put it in the same file that the original picture is in.
My question is....if you do that, then you have two of the same pictures in the same folder (one with the name you gave it and one with a name the computer gave it...some IMG_0812.JPG name), so after I've done this, can I delete the original picture with the numbered name so that I only have the picture with the name I gave it to reduce clutter?
Anyone? Anyone? I ask this question because I'm an organized freak and hate when I need to go and attach a photo I need to know when I took the photo (the month and date) and then all I see are numbers for the names.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How do I rename a photo in the iphoto folder?
    You don't.
And I know that I can do that by going to Share-Export-Use Title and then put it in the same file that the original picture is in.
That depends on how you "put" the renamed export into the "same file." You can Import it into your iPhoto library. If you use the Finder or a Save dialog to save directly into the iPhoto Library folder then this photo will not be recognized by the database.
...can I delete the original picture with the numbered name so that I only have the picture with the name I gave it to reduce clutter?
If you imported the renamed Export properly, and now see both versions of the photo in the library (within the iPhoto application), then yes, you can place the first version in the iPhoto Trash, then Empty iPhoto Trash. Absolutely do not do any of this from within the Finder.
I'm an organized freak and hate when I need to go and attach a photo I need to know when I took the photo (the month and date) and then all I see are numbers for the names.
Don't root around inside the iPhoto Library folder to find your photos for attachments or uploading.
Why: iPhoto is a database application, not a file browser. You aren't supposed to go inside the iPhoto Library folder at all. See this from the iPhoto Help, under "About using the iPhoto Library":
"IMPORTANT: There is also an "iPhoto Library" folder located in the Pictures folder in your home folder, outside the iPhoto application. If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application.
"The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative."
To access your photos, use iPhoto. They are perfectly organized and easy to find, with all of iPhoto's tools at your service. No need to remember the date you took the picture. When you need to upload or attach your photos, select them in iPhoto and do a Share > Export to a Desktop folder. Attach or upload from that folder, then trash it when you are finished.
If you absolutely want to rename your photos it's best to do this before importing into iPhoto. You can use Image Capture (look in your Applications folder) to upload from your camera to a Desktop folder. Use the Finder to preview and rename the files to your liking. Name the folder the way you want the Film Roll to be named in iPhoto. Import the folder into iPhoto, and then delete the one on your Desktop.
But do learn to keep out of the iPhoto Library folder when you are in the Finder. Tampering inside that folder causes much of the damage that I see people coming here to try to repair. Once your photos are inside the iPhoto library, it's best to use iPhoto to do what you want with them.
    Regards.

  • Cannot access shared photo album in iPhoto 9.4.3 on mac

I cannot access a shared photo album in iPhoto 9.4.3.  The directions in help tell me to go to iPhoto preferences > photo stream, and check the box next to "select the shared photo stream checkbox".  There is no such option in my version.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!

I cannot access a shared photo album in iPhoto 9.4.3
Is this a shared photo album from iPhoto on a mobile device or a Shared Photo Stream?
If a shared Photo Stream you should have this preference pane in iPhoto 9.4.3:
Check the boxes as shown in this screenshot and then go to the Photo Stream section in iPhoto and see if they appear.
