Help consolidating/backing up libraries?
i've been buying from the iTunes store on my work iMac and bought a hard drive to back that library up and also so i could copy on to my ibook at home. Having a hard time getting iTunes on the home machine to import the library on the hard drive - is there a way to do this in bulk?
thanks!
Drag the folder containing the library on the hard drive into the open iTunes window. This method will transfer over the songs, but not data such as ratings or playlists.

Move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder?
How do I move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder. I unintentionally moved it. My Mac blocks putting it back. Suggestions? Thanks!
Somehow I managed to delete my System Preferences shortly after upgrading, and was able to use the 10.4 one for a while until I applied the patch. Luckily, I already had Pacifist, and with your directions I was able to get close enough so that I could find the Applications folder within the ContentsofEssentialsSystemSoftwareGroup > ContentsofEssentials.pkg > Applications > SystemPreferences.app.
For that, I owe you the deepest gratitude and a gigantic THANK YOU. My System Preferences is now fully reinstalled and working wonderfully.
Pacifist might actually be worth purchasing. -
Where would I look to find my back ups from my iPad onto desk top computer? The tech. Who helped me try to repair my iPad helped me back them off the iPad onto desk top. Apple had to send new replacement iPad. Tech told me the back ups would be on my desk top but I can't find them. I have lost all my photos. Can anyone please tell me where to look? Thanks, Marti48
I think that the tech probably meant that your photos would be in the backup. If he helped you backup your iPad on your computer, then you have to restore from the backup in order to recover your photos.
Did you bring your computer with you when you got this help from the tech backing up your iPad, or did he talk you through this over the phone?

Consolidating all iTunes libraries back to iTunes folder
I need some advice/confirmation on what is the approach to consolidate all iTunes libraries / files back under the one default iTunes folder location. Some time ago I ran out of disk space on the c: drive so I used the iTunes option and started directing all the iTunes Music to my D: drive [ location being D:\iTunes\iTunes Music. It appears that the Album Covers folder also gets saved to this D: drive location - is that correct? Anyway I now have a bigger hard drive and would like to consolidate all libraries back to C: under the default iTunes folder location, as a precursor toward migrating to an Apple Mac environment. If I use the iTunes advanced/consolidate command will all this be brought back under the C:iTunes folder? Do I have to change the point back to C: iTunes or specify default location some how? Will the Album Covers folder also get merged back under c:iTunes? How do I confirm it is all sweet before I delete duplicate iTunes files off of d: drive? Apologies for being rather verbose, but I really want to get this right the first time! .. future Apple'r.
*If I use the iTunes advanced/consolidate command will all this be brought back under the C:iTunes folder?*
No it won't. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
However once you've consolidated everything in the current location you can then copy the iTunes Music folder back to the C Drive yourself and point iTunes to the new location. The album artwork folder should be in your iTunes folder (not the iTunes Music Folder). The default location for iTunes if you are using the C Drive is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. Inside the iTunes folder are the iTunes Music folder, the iTunes Library files and the artwork folder. You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?

Need help consolidating libraries
Hello all,
Here's the question:
I have two older computers, both of which have limited hard drive space left. My Compaq desktop is being retired after I transfer my extensive music collection to my new Ipod Mini-over 2 GB. My other laptop (IBM thinkpad) holds about 800gig of music files. My questions are:
1. How can I continue to buy music and add files to my Ipod on the laptop without storing them all on the laptop's hard drive.
2. What is the easiest way to transfer the MP3 files from the desktop into the Ipod?
Or another way-how do I transfer all my MP3 files into the Ipod-without having them on either computer-and still be able to use the laptop to buy new music and keep the Ipod updated?
Thanks for the assistance!
Walter
Dallas, TXSee if you can get iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the problem library as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
It will leave the original library untouched in case the result are not what you expected.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Need some help with backing up external hard drive using Time Machine
Hi all, I'm trying to work out the best way to back up multiple iPhoto libraries using Time Machine.
At the moment I have got an iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which have an iPhoto library (with different content). Currently these are not backed up at all. So what I want to do is back both up to an NAS drive, which I know is straightforward.
What I also want to do is create one iPhoto library on an external hard drive that I can use with my MBP, and then delete the iPhoto library on my MBP to free up some hard drive space (it's running slower and slower and I'm hoping that this might help it run quicker).
So, as I want to have the library on two seperate drives in case one fails, what I want to know is whether I could use Time Machine to back up my external hard drive as well as the internal drive of my MBP? Also, would I need to have the external drive connected at all times for Time Machine to "see" it?
I hope that makes sense, all I seem to be doing currently is going round and round and can't work out whether what I want to do is possible or not.
Thanks in advanceIf I understand your goal correctly, you're considering using Time Machine as external storage, and it doesn't work that way. Time Machine keeps around what it can, and older stuff gets flushed as the storage available to Time Machine reaches its lower threshold due to the addition of newer stuff. When the older stuff gets flushed is not predictable.
It is possible to have several Time Machine backups aimed at the same target (this can be done with Apple Time Capsule, for instance), though you might want to partition the disks to ensure that the intended amount of storage is available. Different NAS drives have different features here.
NAS is only as fast as your network connection, and that's almost always much slower than the in-box I/O connections; a local disk will be far faster than a NAS disk, just because of the bottleneck that is wired gigabit Ethernet, and most WiFi is slower and sometimes far slower than wired gigabit Ethernet. FWIW.
If your MacBook Pro is old enough and you have $$ but aren't in a position to spend $$$$$ on a newer model, then consider an in-place drive upgrade.
If your network connection is fast enough to transfer the amount of data you're dealing with in a reasonable time, there are also hosted storage options.
You can use a NAS drive as storage independent of Time Machine, and relocate stuff there. (You'll still want to have backups of that data, as NAS drives — even NAS with RAID — can still lose files, become corrupted or otherwise ruin your data day.
As for your performance, keeping about 10% or so free on the disks is the local preference, but it's worth reviewing the performance of the whole system — Performance Monitor, Console.app, etc — to see if there's something else going on, or if your system load and personal performance expectations are exceeding what your MacBook Pro can provide. -
Consolidating Different User Libraries in Windows XP
We have 2 separate users accounts set up in Windows. A lot of the music is duplicated under each user. I would like to consolidate both libraries into one to save space and delete completely the second user account as this is all the second user is set up for on my PC. I am hoping to update the two ipods manually via separate playlists in my user account once consolidated. I know that I can consolidate music held outside the itunes library but in this instance all music is held in the itunes folder but under different users.
Can anyone confirm the process?

Mavericks *****! Need help going back to 10.8
Well I cant seem to get past the relentless imail, app store, preview issues of the lovely 10.9. The imail app since installing mavericks freezes up, will not show your message on the side of the pane, and wont open up messages to view. This is not all the time, but quite frequently. If you double click on a message to open up, it will make a febile attempt to, then shut off, and produce an error message. I already called support and they told me to reinstall, which I did. Worked for two days then back to having the same issues.
This is both on my iMac and Air
This is also affecting the other mac os apps. I cant even get preview to open up! I just tried to open up the app store and it wont even open. Ugh....this is terrible to say the least. I've tried about every **** thing I can think of and nothing is working. Our IT guy says I'm not the only one with severe issues relating to Mavericks. I feel like I'm back at the old windows days again.
How can I look at my time machine backups and see which one has 10.8 on it so I can reinstall to replace of mavericks? I'm of course open to keeping this POS if I can resolve these new glitches.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated! This is the error message imail is giving to me. Sorry its pretty long but I didnt want to miss any details

I need some help transferring all iPhoto libraries over to the new photos app
I need to transfer iPhoto libraries to photos app on osx Yosemite?
HI,
Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings. -
Help consolidating library?
So I keep my library on an external drive conected to my Airport Extreme via USB due to it's size and my using a Macbook Air. This works fine. I also use iTunes Match for when I leave the house. The issue is when I leave the house if iTunes is open sometimes it defaults back to the normal library in the preferences. Further, when this happens every once in a while I won't notice and add new songs, and when I do so they are put on my Air's drive.
1) Can I prevent iTunes from ever going back to the default library location?
2) When I change the setting back to the external library I always have to let it consolidate FOREVER, but the songs are still on my Air drive and iTunes still reads them from there, not the external. Why does it not copy them over and correct the filepath?
3) How can I make it copy them over and correct the filepath?
I just want everything neat and tidy on my external. Help?Try moving the whole iTunes folder on your internal drive to the desired location on the external. Start iTunes with the option/alt key held down and point it to the "iTunes Library.itl" in the moved folder. This should get iTunes working on the external.
It would be nice to get it all inside the main iTunes folder so future moves simply involve copying the whole iTunes folder. To do that you can change preferences back to 'default' to store your media inside your iTunes folder. However, I haven't done this (and I use a much older version of iTunes) so I am not sure what it regards as default. If it is clever it should regard default as inside the iTunes folder on the external drive since that's where the library you are using is now located, not everything back on your internal drive Home folder! Let it consolidate to a media folder inside the moved iTunes folder if you have room since consolidating copies (you can get rid of the copied files later).
According to what somebody else said in another topic like this, if you start iTunes and it cannot find a library it will ask you to choose one, or give you other options such as quit before defaulting to an internal library. That person found that sufficient reminder to start their external drive before restarting iTunes. -
Half-way there, but still need help with synching individual libraries
Okay, I got my music xferred to new computer, but I'm still having problems synching individual libraries. When I did my daughter's library, I xferred purchased songs, then did the synch, so it wiped everything else out and just left me with the purchased songs (yeah, I know, big duh on my part). That's not such a big deal on her ipod because she only had about 350 songs, so I've replaced the majority of them already. However, my son and I have about 1000 songs each and I don't want to wipe out our libraries.
So, when I plug in my ipod and pull up my library, what do I need to do to keep the songs already on my ipod and synch it?
TIAKatrina you've been very helpful, I'm just having a hard time explaining myself, I guess.
I now have all of my backed up music on my current computer, so that's all good. And I've set up individual libraries for each of us with ipods. Now I'm trying to figure out how to synch (for instance) my ipod with nearly 1000 songs with my own personal library on itunes (which is currently empty) w/o losing the songs currently on my ipod and having to drag them to my itunes library from scratch. The same applies for my son's ipod and itunes library.
My daughter's ipod only had about 350 songs, which I wound up wiping out, so I had to start from scratch putting songs in her (itunes) library, which I can now synch with her ipod. However, that would be really time consuming to do with mine and my son's ipods, so I'm hoping to figure out a way to get the songs already on our ipods into our individual itunes libraries now. -
I need help switching back to iPhoto
In February of this year I switched from iPhoto to Aperture for very specific reasons. My laptop's hard drive was running out of space, as it was housing my photo library that was quickly approaching 25,000 photos and pushing about 30 Gigabytes, and I wanted to take advantage of Aperture's ability to store photo masters on an external drive.
So why switch back? When I described why I had switched and my experiences doing so back in February I had said that I ran into many problems all of which I was able to solve save two:
"The two things I have yet to solve, which are rather large things: 1) Spotlight can no longer find my photos since switching to [edit: from] iPhoto. I am really not sure where to start with fixing this so I think I’m just going to have to ask someone. 2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'. When I try to access the keywords that are “below” iPhoto Aperture freezes. Perhaps I have too many keywords (I do have an awful lot). I’m not sure how to solve this one yet either. Maybe there is a raw .plist file that I can manually edit (and I am willing to do so)." -- Me.
After using Aperture for the past 3+ months I've yet to resolve either of these issues. Recently there was an update to Aperture from Apple that, according to the documentation for the update, was supposed to help resolve my second issue with having too many keywords for Aperture to handle - but it hasn't helped much. So since switching to Aperture I've not tagged more than maybe fifty photos, which is discouraging because I know that once I switch back to iPhoto I'm going to be busy tagging photos again.
So I suppose you could say I'm switching back for two main reasons. First, I want it to be much easier to tag my photos since that is probably the single most important thing to me and the experience with iPhoto and Keyword Manager ( http://www.bullstorm.se/KeywordManager.php ) is far superior to that of using keywords in Aperture. Second, I want my photos to start showing up in Spotlight searches again. I'm more than willing to deal with the caveat, albeit a rather large one, that I won't have my photos with me wherever I go anywhere but that they'll forever reside on my firewire drive.
What I need help with...
When I open iPhoto I see all of the previews for the photos that I had the day I switched to Aperture. However, the originals have been moved by Aperture onto my firewire drive - so when I click on each photo all I get is a ( ! ) symbol. The previews still reference a file that does not exist yet the iPhoto database still retains all of the relevant metadata (date/time, keywords, comments, etc) that I had worked so hard to put into iPhoto. I need to retain this information and somehow get the originals back into place so that iPhoto sees them again.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be. 2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive. 3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
Since I have Aperture store my photos by date - importing only the images that I've imported into Aperture should be a piece of cake. I do not need to retain any metadata from Aperture since I've only tagged a few photos in Aperture and all of the other information I may need should be on the original file (like date taken, etc.). I know I'm going to lose a lot of edits that I've done like cropping, rotating, color balancing, red-eye reduction, etc. but I'm more than willing to lose all of that if it means that I can pick up where I left off and get back into the swing of things in iPhoto.
I've Googled like crazy and haven't found someone doing exactly what I'm trying to accomplish so any help with my current situation is greatly appreciated. I've also posted this on my blog http://cdevroe.com/notes/back-to-iphoto/cvdevroe
2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'.
Bear with me, my terminology may not be right. I'm heading in the opposite direction, and one of the advantages i see to Aperture is that I've got the same advantages in Keyword management as I have with KM in iPhoto.
Have you tried re-organising them using the control bar: Below the thumbs there's a drop down menu, by default it shows Photo Descriptors. Click on it and Select 'Edit Buttons'. You can merrily re-organise your Keywords in this window, and even have your changes reflected in live in the HUD.
As to the Spotlight searching, I'm afraid someone else will need to help on that one. Personally - and it's a regular on the iPhoto forums - I've never had much luck getting Spotlight to search within iPhoto for keywords, apart, of course, from using the search window in the iPhoto Window. I suspect a system-based search of iPhoto keywords is simply not possible.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be.
That will work, but they'll need to be exactly as they were.
2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive.
Easily done, after you've copied it over launch iPhoto holding down the option (or alt) key and choose 'Locate'. Navigate to the new location and that''ll be your default iPhoto Library Folder thereafter.
3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
That should work too.
But the key is, can you return the iPhoto Library Folder exactly as it was, otherwise you'll need to create and populate a new library - and that will inevitable mean losing your keywords in iPhoto too.
FWIW, I need to keep iPhoto going for others in the household who are daunted by Aperture. My solution is a referenced library pointing towards the iPhoto Library Folder / Originals folder.

I can buy a 1T hd to store photos and videos to, but would need a second one to back that up as well? I guess I need to know how to get aperture and iphoto to keep my photos on a larger drive and how to keep both the imac and that larger hd backed up. Note- we can't get DSL, so off site back up isn't a viable option.
Move your photo and video libraries to an external HD. Apple explains how to do this in:

Need help with backed up photos-now cannot view..?
Using iphoto 6, super duper, seagate external hd. Drive has already been set-up and backed up several times-been working well........until.......
Last night, I saw that out of 120gb I have about 5gb left on my G4.!
"decided" to back-up iphotos and "delete" some on my G4 to reserve more space.
Now, if I go to the external and click on pictures folder, I can see all of my originals folders (2002-2008), but when I open iphoto, they are not in iphoto.?
On my G4, it's the same thing, but worse! When I tried to delete my photos, I was holding the apple key and selecting multiple items, then dragging them to the trash.......I'm sure you have done this yourself before, but It drug them a little, then them "dropped" into other places in the same folder-NOT the trash! They are in all different places in the pictures folder, and not in the same places they used to be......!!!
I've read about "re-constructing" the library. Will this work? I do not want to do any more damage. They are there-I know it!
So, I drug the entire library of "originals" back into iphoto, but ALMOST all of the way through (got down to 100 out of 8,000 photos) and got a message that says "an error occured while trying to save your iphoto library. Make sure you have enough hard disk space and that iphoto is able to access the iphoto library folder."
I look at my hd space, and I have about 500mb left....?
What does this mean? I THINK I don't have enough hd space to do it now. What the **** should I do? Getting a little frustrated at this point. I am off tomorrow and want to get it fixed up.
8,000 of my childrens photos is nothing to "play" with. I can't believe I was so stupid with these. These mean the world to me, and I'm pretty sure they are still there. Obviously they are because about 60gb of hd space is being used up with my photos according to the program "what size?" I downloaded to use.
Where to start?
First, thanks for reading this, and second---could someone help me out some?
Could someone please post a link to help me to correctly partition the seagate external hd, and get these photos backed up?
Also, what is the best way to free up my hd space on my G4? I also have a mini with 60gb of storage if I need additional hd space. In addition, I have an iphone, itouch, imac, 3 nanos, ipod hi-fi,,,,,,,Obviously, I LOVE my Apple products, but don't have enough knowledge to operate them.....kinda sad, huh? This is the iPhoto '08 forum (version 7.x.x) and you may very well get incorrect answers to questions about other versions - it would be better to post in the iPhoto 6 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1116

Need help reverting back to SL from Lion. MacBook won't boot up!!!
I am hoping someone can help with this issue. I am trying to revert back to Snow Leopard after upgrading to Lion on my MacBook, but it doesn't seem to be working. After upgrading to Lion, I found out the hard way that Quicken 2007 no longer works. Since I use this regularly, I need to at least export my data out of there to use in a Lion-friendly program. However, it seems the only way that I can do this is to down-grade back to Snow Leopard first. I have been using Time Machine for regular backups for over a year now, and my most recent backup was right before upgrading to Lion.
Here is what I have done so far:
- I booted up in Restore Mode and selected the backup on my Time Capsule that I wanted to restore from. I then selected my HD to restore to. The restore took a little over 2 hours, and it appeared to have been successful. However, upon restarting, it seems to lock up on the initial screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.
- I then booted up with the Snow Leopard disc and tried reloading Snow Leopard, but it wouldn't let me erase the HD. I used the Disk Utility to check the HD, and it appears to be functional. For some reason, I am not able to eject the Snow Leopard disc.
- After rebooting in Restore Mode again (the Snow Leopard disc is still inserted), I again tried restoring from a backup on my Time Capsule. It again took a little over 2 hours, and appeared to be successful. However, after rebooting, it again locks up on the initial screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.
This all took up about 7 hours of my time last night, and I finally gave up. I was able to power down my MacBook, but the Snow Leopard disc is still in it, since it would not eject.
Before upgrading to Lion, I downloaded and installed all available updates. The last Time Machine backup was done after these updates.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can successfully get Snow Leopard back on my MacBook?OK, the install disc ejected this time. I was finally able to reload Snow Leopard successfully, however, it wouldn't let me restore from my latest TM backup. It gave me some sort of message about the case not being correct. (I guess I should have written down the exact message).
Anyway, I then rebooted in restore mode with the SL disc, and selected my last TM backup before the Lion install, and almost 3 hours later, it tells me that the system was successfully restored. It then told me I needed to restart the system, which I did. However, it still locks up on the screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. Should I have removed the SL disc first before restarting?
Considering all of the above, it appears that there is nothing wrong with my HD, which leaves me wondering what the actual issue is?

IF you can erase, my preference at this point would to do a clean install from your SL Install disk and then in SetUp Assistant choose to migrate from your TM volume .
Maybe I should do this? How do I go about erasing my HD? When I did the install of SL, I noticed that I still had some of my old stuff (i.e. all of my iTunes music), so obviously, the HD was not erased before the install. Once I have erased the HD and done the clean install, how do I get to the SetUp Assistant to migrate from my TM volume? Will this restore everything back to the way it was before the upgrade to Lion?
