Help converting Fireworks CS3 to Illustrator CS2 (vector file)

Hello,
I have a customer trying to send artwork that he created in Fireworks CS3 that I need to have in some sort of Vector file.
It appears that Fireworks CS3 can only save an AIv8 file. When doing this, it loses its shading and some (I believe) objet styles when opening the file in AI CS2.
Is there any insight on how to do this?
Thanks,
Josh.

lose your character styles doing this, but if you open your
Illustrator 8 file in FreeHand (with the broken text), delete all
the text 'bits' except one, highlight it and use then Paste
Special: Unformatted text - it should drop in with the correct
style. Then its only a matter of adjusting the text box size.
It's slightly long-winded, but it should work. Hope this
helps...!
How about that... I’ve been using this program for 18
years and never used “paste special”. Thanks!

Unless they can be updated, often applications can only work with files from certain versions of other applications, chiefly versions of the latter that were available when the former was created.
Have you tried to see whether the plotter driver/software can be updated to work with CS5 files?
Is it an option to save as CS2 files and take it from there?

  • Help with symbol libraries! (Illustrator CS2)

    Hi
    (Program is Illustrator CS2)
I am trying to make some symbol libraries of my most common symbols for ease of access. The problem is I want them to load up when Illustrator starts. I have managed to do this with one of the libraries but have no idea how!! The option of setting the window to persistent just appeared and now it doesn't seem to be an option for the rest? Can anyone help? what am I doing wrong?

Edit your startup files. There are two: one for CMYK, another for RGB documents. You'll find instructions in Help.

  • What are my options for opening EPS files in Elements 13? What is the best way to convert these to another type of vector file?

I "upgraded" from Photoshop Elements... uh... mad old... to Elements 13 when my work computer got "upgraded" to Win8. Now I can't open EPS files which is how I receive collateral from our ad agency. What other vector files will work, and how can I convert EPS to these? Please be gentle if this is a stupid question - I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm not an expert at design by any means. I'm just frustrated because this isn't quite the "dead" file type that Adobe thinks it is. What was the point of upgrading if I'm pretty much left in the lurch?
Thanks to any and all who can help! Much appreciated . -ASI

What's important to understand is that Elements is a 'pixel' editor, not a 'vector' editor. As such, it has very limited 'vector' capacity (fonts, shapes...) What you are missing from older versions is the ability to convert vector items to standard pixel image file. To be able to open and work on eps files, you'd need Adobe Illustrator, which seems overkill for your purpose.
    So, your options are:
    - to request your ad agency to supply pdf format images instead of eps ones. My guess is that eps is beeing largely superseded by pdf, but I am not sure...
    - Use external tools to convert from eps to jpeg; a Google search would return free softwares like Irfanview or web based conversion.
    - You might want to keep (or reinstall) older Elements versions just for that purpose.

  • Please Help! Can't open illustrator cs2 - tried all I know!

I'm running ill cs2 on my mac with leopard and for 2 days it won't start up-- I get the "...unexpectedly quit ..." message. I have checked for corrupt fonts and have trashed the prefs folder as described in other posts. It does open if I try with another user acct on the mac but then I have only a handful of fonts and it doesn't solve the problem. I am downloading the free cs4 trial now (taking forever) because I have an urgent project-- is this wise? should I uninstall cs2? Thanks for your time!

    Hi Ovvio
Here's a list of places Illustrator puts preferences:
    /Users/[User]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings
/Users/[User]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Save For Web AI 12.0 Prefs
    /Users/[User]/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.illustrator.plist
try the plist file first, You can trash it and it will regenerate itself. The others need  a bit more care when trashing. I recommend making a copy of what's there first, move the copy someplace safe and then trash the originals. If it doesn't help, replace with the copies so you don't run the risk of losing some settings.
Note, this is for CS3 but aside from the version differences, the paths should be the same.

  • Trouble Importing Illustrator/PDF/Vector File

I was working on a composition within After Effects and I was having no issues importing Illustrator files.  Suddenly it started importing them as something weird?  I'm sure I accidentally hit something to change the settings but I can't figure it out.  Here's a screen shot of my imported files on the left.  The top two on the were suppose to be like the rest of the Illustrator files below them.
Here's a link to my screen shot, notice how it's saying it's a Vector Art Sequence now and not just Vector Art.  It's only putting it on about 10 frames when I drop it in the comp and it's pulling random info from my other files.
    Any help would be appreciated.

But you must somehow have enabled sequence import... This is not coming out of nowhere, so please double check again. Also simply consider naming your files differently from jut numbering thme sequentially to break out of this cycle. If it is truly a bug in the format handling (which I doubt), that would be pretty much the only option, anyway.

  • Help! My CS3 won't open RAW files from my Canon EOS 7D..

I have always used Photoshop CS3 - I like it and am quick with it, and I shoot RAW files on Canon EOS.
I don't want to upgrade to CS5, however since upgrading my camera to a 7D, Photoshop will no longer
open my RAW files. I've tried to update plug-ins, I've tried to work through DNG [it won't open those either]
and I've tried for hours on end to get an answer from Adobe on the phone. Nothing is working. Does anyone
have any advice for me please? I'm begining to tear my hair out!! Emma

    Hi,
Are you saying your Ps CS3 won't even open the sample DNG file (/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Samples/Doors.dng)? If that's the case then you need to make sure you have the correct Camera Raw 4 plug-in installed properly.
If it is just DNGs generated from your 7D files, then maybe the DNG Converter options need to be tweaked.
    regards

  • Illustrator CS2 Run time error

i encountered error ..."Illustrator cs2\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe . This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. "
i know this issue is not new but i have tried solutions found in this forum here but to no avail. For you information, I am using Window XP SP3 , Dual Core 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM
    Tried solutions:
    1) Delete AIPref in c:\Documents & Settings\<User name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings ----> I just found this with local Admin login.Other user's login do not have this
folder (our pc running on domain)
( Suppose the path given in the solutions is in c:\Documents & Settings\<User name>\App Data\Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings but mine is different )
    2) Uninstall completely with all related folders cleared with RevoUninstaller and Reinstall back
    3) Download adobe illustrator cs2 patches update and run but to no avail.
    4) Thorough scan with AV and AntiMalware with zero detections found.
    5) Using different login name, it works. I do not know why. (But that particular user having problem opening it on the same pc)
Previously, it was working fine until recently. For your information, no windows update were performed before this problem happened.
    Please advice

As Wade said, try and trash the prefs first (C:\Users\Byron\AppData\Roaming\Adobe). If that doesn't help, check your system event viewer (Start Menu --> Programs --> Management) and find out, what component actrually throws an error. It's quite possible that there is some DLL missing or of the wrong version. Also make sure to run AI with administrative priviliges or at least turn off UAC. CS2 was long before Vista, so it will not be able to handle some of its intricacies correctly. You may also wish to run the program in compatibility mode. Might make things better.

  • Fle format difference between Illustrator CS2 and CS3

Does anyone know the difference between the file format of Adobe Illustrator CS2 and CS3? Is there a document that documents this? Can someone send a link? The reason I am asking is that I have written a plug-in which saves the current CS3 document back down to CS2 so that users who are still using Adobe Illustrator CS2 can open it. However, if the same document is opened by a CS3 user, what objects, constructs or data structures are likely to be lost because the file has be converted down to CS2? Most things seem to be retained and I have yet to find a problem but if yo save manually from CS3 to CS2, Illustrator puts up a warning stating "Saving to a legacy format may cause some changes to your text layout and disable some editing features when the document is read back in". Does anyone have any more detail on this?
    Thank you

The AI File Format is not publically documented, as far as I know. I'm sure there are plenty of differences between CS2 & CS3's file formats, but you're not likely to find anything official on the subject.
What you lose saving back you're more likely to get help on, assuming someone's actually investigated this. I haven't, unfortunately. I wouldn't mind knowing either if someone has information on this.

  • CS2 Doc Converted to CS3 takes 2+ Minutes to Open Every Time

We are in the process of switching 34 users from ID CS2 to ID CS3 and are having file conversion nightmares. They need to re-use their old CS2 ad layouts but many users are complaining that the conversion to CS3 takes several minutes. In our test period we had noted that but once the doc was converted the subsequent file opening time in CS3 was greatly reduced. But it now appears that when some users are opening the converted and saved docs they are still experiencing the same file opening delays as when the docs were being converted from CS2. Then a different user will open the same doc and it will open immediately. We have tried to find a common setup or preference or plug-in issue that might be a problem, but so far have struck out. 6 users have brand new MacPros running Leopard 10.5.2 with all Adobe CS3 patches installed. This group uses identically configured everything and they still have inconsistent file opening behavior! Some open instantly and others take 2-5 minutes for the same file. We have noted similar inconsistency amongst our users who still have GS PowerMacs running Tiger 10.4.11. Their CS3 is patched and fully updated. Now I would expect there to be inconsistencies between the Tiger and Leopard G5 and Intel groups, but we see the same thing with the same file taking different amounts of time to open after having been converted and saved and then opened again with the same-configuration users, no matter what they are using.
We use a Xinet file and print server and all users are supposed to work on files off the server so the working file stays up to date, but for testing we have been having them download the same files to their desktops and opening them. One of my test Macs is an Intel Mac running Tiger 10.4.11 and Adobe CS3 all updated and I use the same 3rd party plug-ins as everyone else. We only use two sets of 3rd party plug-ins - the Xinet WebNative and FullPress plug-ins and Extensis Suitcase X1 client Auto-Activation plug-in getting fonts from a Suitcase server.
We don't have the problem if documents are created from scratch in CS3. Unfortunately, it will take a very long time to get to where we would never be using any of our old CS2-created files, so we need to figure out a workable solution. It is mainly a question of time, which is something you never have enough of before your press deadline and the users are balking at the amount of production time they are losing waiting for files to open. They have a tendency to force-quit InDesign before it can finish opening and then they have to deal with all the file recovery dialogues the next time. They are getting very frustrated.
Has anyone run into this behavior or come up with a solution? If so I'd love to hear from you!
    Thanks, Laura K.

    Hi Kevin,
I did some more trial and error testing since I posted my original message. This is what seems to be working:
You can leave the Suitcase Auto Activation plug-in there, but if you go into its preferences make sure the box for "Activate fonts in embedded objects" is not checked.
That made all the difference - so far. I need to try this on a couple more of my troubled Macs before I will declare victory!
In the Suitcase Client prefs you should also turn off Suitcase's auto activation and let the application plug-in handle that. I read that somewhere else a couple days ago, maybe it was the Extensis forums? Can't remember. But that's how I have mine set on my test Macs. (one MacPro running Tiger and a MacBook Pro running Leopard)
    Hope that helps!
    Laura K.

  • Fonts NOT showing up in Illustrator but are in Fireworks (CS3)

    Hi,
I have the CS3 package and it works great. However, I have a load of fonts on my system that are not appearing in the fonts menu in Illustrator CS3. I checked if Fireworks CS3 was picking them up and it is...this is great, but why not in Illustrator??
I also checked Photoshop, and they don't show there either. This is really weird. These are only basic fonts like "Helvetica" etc.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated on how to resolve this.
I am using Vista 64 and the CS3 suite.
    Thanks again,
    Mikey

Along with Mikey, I have a large number of fonts loaded but, when looking at them in the font list (with 'Preview' turned on), only about half of them actually display a font...the rest are blank. When I apply the 'blank' fonts to text, nothing appears. When I apply a functioning font that does show a preview, it looks fine. Maybe these are related issues?

  • Illustrator CS2 Start up - Convert color mode dialog box

Using Illustrator CS2, on opening, the usual loading prescreen appears, after which a dialog box appears showing the following text
    "Convert Color Mode"
"The document contains objects using both CMYK and RGB color modes. Illustrator allow only one color mode per document. Which color mode would you like to use? (RGB and CMYK appear as option boxes)"
This dialog box appears every time I open Illustrator, even though I'm not actually opening a document.
I've tried adjusting the Color Settings (Edit> Color Settings) but this hasn't affected the dialog box appearing.
I've checked all the usual sources of help but can't identify any cures.
I want to be able to change this so the dialog box no longer appears as it tends to "hide" behind all the other applications I have open at the time and can be difficult to get to, meaning opening Illustrator is a 5 minute battle.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You haven't messed with the startup .ai files have you?
You might try deleting the ai prefs file (see FAQ), though that might be a reach in this case.

There are new features in CS 3 as opposed t CS 2 and the text engine has been improved some what in CS 3. If you have text on a path that is say curved you are going to see a loss in the spacing and way it is oriented. fixed in CS 4.
I forget some of the new features in CS 3 what was not a feature in CS 2 will be flattened when saved back.
Or the feature will simply not be available.
