Help converting old Freehand files

I have several old Freehand files, to be honest I don't
remember the versions, but they were definitely before 9. I'm on a
PowerMac running Freehand MX and Illustrator CS3 and do not have
the Classic 9 operating system still on this machine. Am I
completely out of luck?

> She hacks the old files, tricking AI CS3 into believing
they are FH7 files.
My apologies. The hack trick doesn't work for old FreeHand
files but does
work for old AI files.
Since you are using a PowerMac (which probably came with a
version of Mac OS
9) I suggest installing OS9 and running FH8. A time-limited
FH8 demo and a
batch processing script is is available here.

From the same technote:
"Identifying FreeHand 3 and 4 files
On Windows, FreeHand 3 files will have a .fh3 extension, and
FreeHand 4
files will have a .fh4 extension. On Macintosh, a FreeHand 3
file will have
a file type of FHD3, and a creator of FHA3. For a FreeHand 4
file, the file
type is AGD1, and the creator is FH40."
In the event your files are older than FH3, I found FH 5.5
did a good job of
opening and translating FH2 files. Open in FH5. Save as FH5.
FH5 files can
then be opened in FH8 and saved as FH8 files.
Older FH installers are available here:

I found a link to a FH 5.5 demo here. Download at your own
risk.

  • No longer have a system that can run Freehand but have 1000's of old Freehand files. Can I convert them to something CC can open, like AI?

    I had a graphic design business for 10 years and at the time found Freehand to be the best solution.  Now I'm an InDesign convert but many of the old freehand files I wish I could open and convert to something in CC.  I need to rebuild my portfolio and many of those old Freehand files are great works of art.  I no longer have a system that will run Freehand, is there something I can run that would convert these files to Illustrator or something usable.  I wish adobe would at least make a patch so I can run it on my Mac long enough to get the key files I want.  Anyone have any suggestions or am I just screwed and 10 years of art is gone...

    Your timing is actually good! This plugin was released this month for doing what you need into Illustrator CC:
    Tensai FH>AI Plugins
    As to InDesign, I have been using FreeHandMX to export my files to PDF and trying out these two converters:
    PDF2DTP | Markzware
    PDF to InDesign converter
    The Markzware converter seems better and they have been eager to hear from FreeHand users. Where conversion isn't exact is text and takes some tweaking. Also any problems Illustrator had with converting FreeHand files shows up in InDesign.
    As for running FreeHand on the latest Macs, virtualization with Parallels and Fusion running Snow Leopard is successful and seamless. Also using WIN versions of FreeHand with CrossWeaver and WINE on Mavericks.

  • Need help opening really old FreeHand files

    I have some very old FreeHand files, I'm not sure what
    version but probably around v.5 or so. I have all the source files
    and fonts and I'd like to reconstruct FreeHand files in version 10
    or even 9 if possible. Problem is I can't open the old FreeHand
    files through the menu options or by dragging the files onto the
    app icons.
    Does anyone have any suggestions? I downloaded FreeHand BNDL
    Resources from FreeHandSource.com a while back but they didn't seem
    to do anything. Any help is appreciated.

    Are you on a Mac? If your version of Freehand can open the
    version the
    file was saved as you can open the file by dragging it to the
    application icon while holding down the option and apple
    keys.

    Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
    Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
    After this, do an update from the App Store.
    Thats all there is to it.
    For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
    Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
    There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

    Want to convert old movie files to put in Itunes.
    What does "old movies" mean to you? File type, audio and/or video compression format(s)?
    Can't upgrade QT player preinstalled, so downloaded QT Player 7 and purchased QTPlayer 7 Pro registration code.  Can not get it to upgrade.
    Did you follow the instructions found here?
    If you have a fix, you can email me direct at [email protected]
    To which fix do you refer? Activatng QT 7 Pro or converting the files? Even with QT 7 Pro activated you may need to modify your QT codec component configuration depending on the file type and compression formats used to encode your "old movies." There may be many different problems here with each having one or more "fixes." Please try to be more specific regarding your questions. Converting a muxed VOB MPEG2/AC3 file would be very different different from converting an AVI DivX5/MP3 file depending on which application you are attempting to use.

    ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

    Ok, I researched a little.
    The variable i is set to 0 in loadImage, which is called by a timed out function startShow, which is called directly.
    So I was right to surmise I=0, but you don't even need to define it yet.
    If you add
    var i;
    var timer1,timer2;
    to the top of the program, all the variables are defined globally, which as far as I can see is the intention.
    That leaves me with one undefined variable and curious syntax:
    r36:
    this.mcImages.gotoAndStop(this.nextImg age);
    What is intended here? Age is never defined. I guess it might be defined by Flashvars, as in as2, these would be accesible as a root variable, but this doesn't mean much to me. I'd expect something like this.nextImg+age or something.
    So I searched again: nextImg is not defined but I found this.nextImage = imageNum;
    So there is just a space that got in there somehow.
    Fixed that and it compiles, but immeadeately after compilation you get a problem with attachMovie
    this.attachMovie("mc_Images", "mcFader", 10, {x:0, y:0});
    This is a as2 way of taking things out of your library and placing them as a child of another.
    The new way to do that is to make a clip accessible in your library and then instantiate a new class with:
    var mcFader:mc_Images= new mc_Images();
    this.setChildIndex(mcFader,10);
    mcFader.x=0; // this is not needed, as it is default, as it was in as2, so it was obsolete there as well!
    mcFader.y=0;// this is not needed, as it is default, as it was in as2, so it was obsolete there as well!
    this.addChild(mcFader);
    There are some other issues after that,
    I would have to look at the source to fix them, because they have to do with the structure of mc_images. Which is not in code, but in your library.
    The whole code would the look like this:
    stop();
    var fadeSpeed = 40; //Sets fad-in speed of images, default is 30
    var imageTime = 5; //Sets time each image is on screen, in seconds
    var mcFader:mc_Images= new mc_Images();
    this.setChildIndex(mcFader,10);
    mcFader.x=0; // this is not needed, as it is default, as it was in as2, so it was obsolete there as well!
    mcFader.y=0;// this is not needed, as it is default, as it was in as2, so it was obsolete there as well!
    this.addChild(mcFader);
    this.mcFader._alpha = 0;
    this.mcFader._visible = false;
    var imageNum = 1;
    var i=0;
    var timer1,timer2;
    startShow();
    function startShow(){
             timer1 = setInterval(loadImage, imageTime * 1000);
    function loadImage(){
              i = 0;
              imageNum ++;
              if(imageNum == this.mcImages._totalFrames + 1){
                        imageNum = 1;
              this.mcImages._x = 0;
              this.mcImages._y = 0;
              this.mcFader._alpha = 0;
              this.mcFader._visible = true;
              this.mcFader.gotoAndStop(imageNum);
              this.nextImage = imageNum;
              var timer2 = setInterval(fadeImage, fadeSpeed);
    function fadeImage(){
              this.mcFader._alpha = i;
              if(i > 100){
                        clearInterval(timer2);
                        this.mcImages.gotoAndStop(this.nextImgage);
                        this.mcFader._alpha = 0;
                        this.mcFader._visible = false;
              i = i + 10;
    function goLink(fNum){
              clearInterval(timer1);
              this.mcImages.gotoAndStop(fNum);

    I've been trying to convert some old CS files into CS5 files. These are simple files: some text, simple line work, a photo or two (tiff, jpeg or eps) and some simple illustrator art. These files were typically 500k to 800k. The updated files are 3 - 6mg. I tried to start with a new file and copy/paste the text, line work and art and would end up with a file around 2 - 3 mg without photo. What do I need to do to end up with a normal size file?

    It rather depends whether you have effects that interact with the photos.
    If you do, it may be better to embed just prior to saving as pdf.
    My policy is to keep images linked for as long as possible.
    Remember too that the photos will be converted to the colour mode of the Illie file as soon as they are embedded.

  • Anyone know how to convert old audio files.

    I have some old audio files going back to OS 7 or OS 9.   There is no file extension.
    Kind:  Unix Executable File
    How can I convert these into something OS X will play.

    That executable file type is just OSX's way of saying it doesn't know what it is.  Unfortunately during the OS7-OS9 days Apple dropped using file extensions. As I transitioned from DOS to Mac in the late 1980s I kept on adding them to all my files because I used several computers and would take a floppy from one to the other and needed to know what kind of files I had on there.  I still have sounds from OS7 days and I know what they are because I added extensions 24 years ago.
    You might see if you can find a resource checking utility.  Resources are hidden file information about creator and type in older files.  I think I have one on this computer but I am running a G4 OSX 10.4.11 and it is Classic capable so I have all kinds of old software here that may not run on a newer computer.
    IT is conceivable VLC might play the file.  It can do all kinds of things but I don't know how good its legacy format support is.

Is there a way to convert them to AACs on the Mac without having to download extra programs? On my PC, iTunes would offer to switch these files automatically to AAC, but on the Air I'm not receiving this notification nor do I see an option to do so. Please help!

    I was just having a very similar problem. I've had my MacBook Air for a few years now and I haven't had any trouble.
    My mom just recently sent me recordings of an old CD I used to listen to--they are wma files.  I have flip4mac and quicktime, so I can play them no problem. However, I can't add them to my iTunes library and I can't add it to my iPhone playlist. I tried duplicating and saving the quicktime file as an iTunes audio format, and I tried exporting to iTunes, but it keeps saying "Cannot Open This Media may be damaged."
    I used the Switch converter, and was able to add it to my iTunes Library after converting. Lucky for me, I only had to convert 12 songs. Really good app, thanks!
