HELP: Copying layers from one file to another to keep structure not possible??!!!

Hi guys,
I have a curious question. Sounds a bit silly and highly disappointed if Illustrator is actually not capable of doing this. Hopefully I have missed something.
I have an AI doc that has grown so large that saving it now is a major effort so trying to break out sections into multiple AI files. Allot of users will be working on these files so it is imperative that all the Artboard elements are clearly organized in the appropriate folders (layers). Im trying to simply copy and paste a layer that has multiple layers beneath and within those more layers to another empty AI file. Everything copies correctly and in place however it dumps all the elements into a single massive layer in the new file. If I go into the Layer Palette menu and check on Paste Remembers Layers it does a better job at keeping some of the structure but it still doesnt copy exactly how the structure was in the Master document.
Please tell me Im doing something wrong. I cant believe that you cant simply drag and drop a parent layer from one file to another while maintaining its structure! Exactly like in Photoshop - copying a folder from one file to another is simply as easy as dragging and dropping ...is this same methodology not available with Illustrator? I always assumed the layer and folder concept between these two packages were somewhat interchangeable.

Hi All,
After much trial and error trying to locate where the problem was it ended up being the guide objects. If you have the guides set to lock and attempt to copy out any layer that a guide is sitting in the resulting copy/paste will break apart that layer structure in the destination file. Simply setting the guides unlock allows everything to translate correctly.
You guys may have known about it already but I learnt a little something in the process. Thanks to all for your suggestions!

A way to move layers from one file to another in actions?

Ok, question for the gurus out there - rather than try to explain, I'll give you an example: Lets say I have a series of adjustment layers that I want to apply to a sequence of 40 images. The adjustments are in a layer group, and are saved as a separate file.
I DON'T want to drag and drop them, I want to run an action that will copy the adjustments to each image- now I know I can save down each adjustment as a separate file, lets a curve (acv) a selective color (ahu) file and load THAT in as part of my action. But I don't want to do that either, because these adjustments will change and I want to easily re-render my changes on all 40 images in one step.
I also don't want to use After Effects to do it, because my client doesn't own it. There used to be
a way to move layers from one file to another in actions because I seem to remember doing it. The answer is not Duplicate Group either because that needs you to specify a destination file name.
Is it possible to do this without scripting? I'm pretty sure it used to be because I seem to remember doing it, just cant remember HOW I did. Maybe I'm wrong about this though.

What I want to know is is there a way to move adjustment layers from one file to another in an action. I know also that you can use the clipboard to move pixel layers, but I've yet to find a way to move adjustments.

I am editing figures for a journal and I need arrows for multiple images. Is there a standard arrow? I can only see free hand. If I use a free hand arrow I then want to copy it to the other images for consistency. How do I copy or share layers between images?

There are many arrows in the shape tool, or you can set the line tool to have an arrowhead in the tool options. You can copy/paste layers from one image to another, or drag a layer from the layers panel into the main image window of another image and then use the move tool to position it. You can also drag into the thumbnail in the photo bin, but you'll still need to bring the image up to adjust the positioning.

Copying layers from one document to another problem?

Hey there, so I have two documents of the same size (11 inches x 8.5 inches) and I am trying to copy some layers from an original document and move it to the second one. I'm doing this by just dragging the layers from the original to the new document. The problem is, the text or images are extremely smaller on the new document and if I blow them up, look really pixelated. What am I doing wrong? The original document is saved as a Photoshop PDF and I believe was made on CS4. I am currently using Photoshop CC 2014.

Make sure the DPI/Resolution is the same for the new document as it is for the original. Files created with 11x8.5 at 72 dpi will show up smaller on 11x8.5 at 300 dpi documents for example. You can also right click on the layer and choose 'duplicate layer', then when the dialog open, select the name of the new document in the dropdown as the place to put the duplicate layer. Either way, the dpi of both files should match. Viewing the image size on the image menu can tell you the current DPI/Resolution. Hope that helps with your problem some. I'm not sure if the fact that the original is a PDF is causing an issue.

Error when copying code from one file to another

According to your error message, your onClick function declaration line closes the parenthesis twice... you may have a typo in what you actually put in the file versus what you think you put...

Copying layers from one document to another

Hi using Cs6, locked down all the layers I didnt want to copy across, select all, copy .. new document select paste remembers layers, paste in front, all layers beautifully copied but I cant see any of them on the artboard, only in the layers panel. There is nothing on top of the layers .. any suggestions much appreciated .. thanks

Do a view >> outline view, do you see the elements anywhere?
Zoom out, you may have pasted close to the edge of the pastboard
If you had an element selected(that was inside a mask), and then did a paste in front or back, you may have nested the items inside a mask - though I doubt this is what happened since you have more than one layer.

EDIT: I see you edited your question, so I am editing my reply.
To copy the scale of a layer, open the main twirl of that layer and you'll see the Transform properties group. Open the twirl for that, and you'll see Anchor Point, Position, Scale, etc. Click on "Scale" and copy it (Edit > Copy, or Control+C on Windows/Command+C on Mac). Then select the other layers and just paste (Edit > Paste, or Control+C on Win/Command+V on Mac).
Such a broad question
Anytime you add a new item you imported to the timeline or composition panels, it becomes a new layer.
Anytime you duplicate an existing layer (Edit > Duplicate), you get a new layer.
Anytime you split a layer (Edit > Split) you get a new layer.
Anytime you copy a whole layer (target the name in the timeline panel) and paste it, you get a new layer.
You also create layers when you use the Shape tools, text tools, or create a new solid layer, etc.
This list could go on and on, so instead, I invite you to read the After Effects Help section on Creating layers specifically, and the whole chapter on Layers and properties, in general. If anything isn't clear for you, then let us know.

Need help coping project from one computer to another.

I need help coping project from one computer to another. I loaded all video on computer 1, copied events and project folder to computer 2. I was told I only needed to copy the project folder back to computer 1 since the events folder is already there. I copied project folder back to computer 1 but the files wont open. I dont have computer 2 available.

No that's not the way to do it - iMovie gets confused and in some cases the problems might be un-repairable.
You've got several problems
• iMovie'08 - CAN NOT MOVE PROJCTS - You NEED iMovie'09 or iMovie'11 - I see no other working solution
• Never MOVE or alter any folder named
iMovie Projects - or -
iMovie Events
on DeskTop/Finder - This might be very harmful
• Moving (Projects) and Events - HAS TO be done within the iMovie Application.
You've got an Evets window and here You can view Your Events in two ways - Yearly - or - Yearly per Hard disk
Here You can move within this "window" to another location
• Projects - NO they do not contain Your full movie - only a document on howto use the material in Event folder
and there might be worse if You added Photos from iPhoto and Audio from iTunes/Garageband - then You have
to get this over to the second Mac too, to be able to continue editing.
So to move Your projects to another Mac You need
• iMovie'09 or 11
• an external hard disk -
MUST BE Mac OS Extended formatted - as UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO
Should be a FireWire one - as UBS/UBS2 performs badly when used for video
• Then move/copy over within Project resp Events window in iMovie Application

You don't mention which operating system you have so it's difficult to provide an answer since the mac and Windows stores the files differently.
The other thing you can do is just re-download the apps from the iTunes Store. Just login to the iTunes Store on the other computer using the same Apple ID. On the right-hand side of the iTunes Store page you will see a 'Purchased' link. Clicking on that will take you to a page that will list your past purchases which you can re-download to the new computer.

Copying photos from one computer to another, with descriptions

After editing photo descriptions and locations in iPhoto, it is desireable to be able to copy them to iPhoto on another computer, with the associated photo descriptions and locations. In principle, this is possible by selecting all desired photos, then selecting File -> Export... In the Export dialog box, in the "File Export" tab, select "Include: Titles and keywords", and "Include: Location information". Copy the exported files to the other computer, and do a File -> Import to Library ...
In practice, this works fine with images taken by some cameras, and not with images from others. In my limited experience with a Fuji F80EXR and a Canon SX230HS, the above work flow works with the Fuji. But, with the Canon, while the exported files clearly have the description data embedded in them (as seen by GraphicConverter), it is not imported into iPhoto, nor is it visible in Preview's Inspector. The workaround I use is to run an exiftool command on the exported files.
Exiftool is a command line utility that can read and write meta data in image files:

I run the following command on the exported files to rewrite the IPTC Caption:
exiftool −overwrite_original_in_place -tagsfromfile %f.jpg -ext jpg -"IPTC:Caption-Abstract>IPTC:Caption-Abstract" *.jpg
Note that the above command overwrites the files that were exported from iPhoto. If you wish to leave the original files intact, with an "_original" appended to the file name, run:
exiftool -tagsfromfile %f.jpg -ext jpg -"IPTC:Caption-Abstract>IPTC:Caption-Abstract" *.jpg
I'm not sure why it is necessary to copy and rewrite that data. Perhaps there is something strange in the format of the meta data in the file as it comes from the camera, and the iPhoto export does not correct this strangeness. Copying and rewriting the data by exiftool seems to put things right.
The above works for me, but is somewhat unwieldy. Is there a better way to copy photos from one computer to another, if iPhoto refuses to import the description data that it was written to the exported files?

Thanks for the pointer. I did a test with 10 images, and confirmed the iPLM works, even with the problematic images from my Canon SX230HS.
The workflow is to use iPLM to create a new Library on the computer that has the photos you want to copy. Copy the photos to the new Library. Copy the new Library to the second computer using a method of your choice (file sharing, USB flash drive, etc). Copy the photos from the new Library to the existing iPhoto Library.
iPLM costs $20, whereas my original solution was free (but you need to invest the time to get exiftool installed and working). But, unlike exiftools, iPLM also copies over the Faces information, so it is likely a worthwhile investment if you use that feature.

You can't copy directly from one iPod to another, you have to copy the songs back to iTunes and update the new iPod from there. You can't do it directly on the iPad - the new album functionality basically only allows you to copy photos into those new albums, you can't move them. The way that I think of it as working is that you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you then delete the original photo on the iPad you therefore automatically delete all the pointers to it.
If you want to re-organise your albums then you will need to do it on your computer and then sync those albums over to the iPad
