HELP! Corrupt raw .TIF files

In 2005 I was shooting with a Canon 1Ds Mark2 and the raw files were .TIF files.
There was one shoot where all the files were perfectly fine and I had no problem with them.
However, I've now gone back to that shoot and every single one of the raw .TIF files now say: "Could not complete your request because the file is not a TIFF file." when I try to open them. They still have the proper file size so they're not blank.
This mystifies me because there was never a problem with them back when and now EVERY SINGLE ONE of them says that?
Does anyone have any idea how to rectify this?
THANKS!

I'm on an Intel-based PowerMac so Photoshop CS5 is running fine.
You're correct, I wrote the wrong thing down about the camera, it WAS the 1Ds - my current camera is the 1DsMark2.
You're correct that Camera Raw still opens 1Ds .TIF files, the problem is that it won't open THESE 1Ds .TIF files as it did back when I first shot them. For some reason, the particular files from this shoot are NOW not opening although they did back when.
Just so I'm clear, the specific files I'm talking about I had no problem opening when I transferred them from my CF card. NOW I'm not able to. This is not the case for ALL these shoots I did back then, just from this one shoot.

  • Lightroom and corrupted tif files.

    For some reason, now when I right click on tif file in windows I'm getting a pop up box that states;
    Explorer. Tif:corrupt file.
This applies to all tif files on all drives.
I first noticed this with imported to lightroom from raw pef files, processed and then exported from light room.
it also includes files opened from Pentax RAW files, processed with ACR and CS2 then saved as tiffs.
    any ideas?
    Simon.

No. I'm running XP and my files are Pentax PEF raw files and tiffs created from these.
Tiffs opened from a cd are fine - as are tiffs copied to my PC from cds. It's as if windows has decided that there is a problem with all tiffs on the machine.
double clicking them - they open fine in CS2.
If I right click to get the menu - then the error message clicks in.

There is no advantage to saving or opening other than at the native resolution.
Actually, not entirely true. In the case of Fuji DSLR's you would do better to double the rez in Camera Raw as that matches the interpolation that the Fuji software does in their higher quoted "effective resolutions"(it ain't real resolution mind you but it can benefit certain image types).
If you know for an absolute fact you need more resolution than the native file has, you really might want to test upsampling in Camera Raw as it has a newly tuned upsample (put in in ACR 5.2) that is an adaptive Bicubic algorithm that is either the normal Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother depending on the size–and that's something even Photoshop can't do.
But in general unless you know for a fact you need the image bigger (or have a Fuji camera) processing at the file's native size is the most efficient.

I have version 4.4.1 on my computer now, which is functioning properly - but does not read the .ARW files. When I download the link you sent and try to open it, it pops up as version 5 and I get this image (attached). • Corrupted tif files

    Hi All,
I was working on a big tif file 2g at size, I edit it with photoshop through adobe lightroom. Due to unknown reason, when i tried to save the file in photoshop, and I was informed the file is non-accessible. It ends up the file is disappeared from hardisk and I used some recovery software to retrieve the tif files. However, it seems a corrupted tif files which can't open in Photoshop or Irfanview.
the error message I got from photoshop is 'could not complete your request, because it is not the right kind of file'.. it is a tif file with layers.
I had tried to google and search, it seems there is no way to repair a corrupted tif files.
Do I have a chance to restore it using any method?
    thank you.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss of data.
Generally speaking, lost image data is usually really lost, especially if any recovered files you've identified to possibly contain your images are not opening in the ways you've tried...
Just basic stuff you've probably already thought of:
Have you made sure to rename files you're hoping to be TIFFs with the .tif file extension?
Did you File - Save As your file anywhere else?
Did you do a system backup that might have saved an earlier copy of the file to external media?

  • Freezing Finder with PSD/TIF files - HELP!

    Hello everyone,
First of all, I am pretty much ******. I've invested over 2400€ for my brand new Imac and now, out of nothing, my finder in Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.4 starts to hang/freeze whenever I get into the folder with large PSD/TIF files.
It started with large TIF files. I have placed them along with other PSD projects and they range about 50-300MB each. These files are in a specific project folder. Now I get into the folder, and it doesn't matter how I view it. Either in list or symbol view. I scroll down, bam! Pizza of death or wheel of death, and no, I am not able to force quit the finder.
I am like what the ****..?! I just swapped over to the Mac. I just fell the love of the Mac slogan: "It just works". Yeah, I can feel it..
I've installed Xee image viewer before, deleted it again, no change. I even deleted Norton Anti Virus, no change, problem still exist. I've been up till around 5AM with no sleep, trying to figure out what has caused this problem. I think loosing it. I googled like mad, but there were no significant solutions.
HOWEVER, if I start up Pathfinder, and go to the projects folder, I can seamlessly view all project files PSD/TIF within the Finder and quicklook. It wont hang OSX. This is my current solution... but I don't want to use PathFinder all the time, just to get to my projects folder.
I really need your help. (x_x)
    Thanks

Wow, that was a fast response, thank you.
I did remove Norton after the incidence, and yet, the problem exist.
I used to open my project files with Photoshop CS5. Before I open anything, I browse through my project data within the Finder, i.e list view + quick view, I just scroll up and down within the window to check out the data name before I open it.
Everything works just fine. I used to use Xee image viewer and I can literally open and view any image. But as soon the files get larger in size, and the more files I got in one folder - like 100+, the more it was likely, that my Finder hangs. And it still does.
It starts to freeze immediately within seconds or when I scroll down more and there it goes, spinwheel goes nuts and I have to restart my Imac (omg). I did that like 8-10 times now. I left my Mac on when I went to bed for 2h, and after I checked it again, the spinwheel didn't do anything then spin and I could not quit Finder. Everything hangs.
All I need to do, is to open my Projects folder, and boom, freeze. I thought it was due to the large TIF files. I deleted them via Adobe Bridge, because I can't go to that folder with Finder, otherwise it'll freeze AGAIN. Now I had the PSD files left, they are about 50-300MB big, and I got around 100 of them in one folder. Issue still remains.
I deleted almost everything, checked my startup icons and so forth, but I did not have the problem before, or I didn't notice it.
I can however browse lots of PSD files with smaller sizes AND as I mentioned in the above post. I can view my project folder with PATHFINDER and ADOBE BRIDGE with absolutely NO single problem.
I guess it's a Finder-Preview-PSD Extension- etc problem? I got the Mac like a month and now I got this. Gladly no one can tell me I got this issues due to some weird Trojans or "badly configured" computer.

  • Corrupted TIF files restore

    Hello
as i was working on a TIF file in Photoshop, my computer unexpectidly restarted
then, when i opened my TIF work in Photoshop, an error message appeared "Could not complete your request beacause of a p^roblem parsing the TIFF file."
Looks like my file is corrupted, no ?
here is a .png version of the corrupted picture
the below half is totally black and a multicolor line devides the pic on the half
Can i send the .tif file to Adobe team so that you restore it ??
it seems Windows hasn't made a backup of the file before the accident
Here is a look of a previous .png version to see what it supposes to look like
    Thanks for your help

Yes, that file appears to have been corrupted on disk, probably beause it wasn't finished writing when the computer restarted (BTW - that probably means you have some defective hardware in the system, you need to get that looked at).
It is unlikely that anything more can be recovered.

  • Scanner tif files opening in Camera Raw

With CS3 installed, some of my scanner generated tif files from an Imacon
scanner are now opening in Camera Raw window of PS CS3.
    Windows XP SP2
Windows file type association set to Photoshop CS3 for tif files.
Using Windows explorer, choosing to open the tif file in CS2 works fine,
file opens directly in PS CS2.
Using Windows explorer, choosing to open in CS3 opens the same file in ACR
    and then in PS CS3.
    David

    David,
Im glad you opened this thread. Im having the opposite problem. I have a scanner TIF image (sent to me by someone else) that we want to open in ACR. He had already opened it in CS3 ACR4 before sending it. I just installed CS3 today.
I tested this file at a local camera store yesterday and it behaved as I expected. That is, I could open in PS or ACR as desired via the fly-out menus. But after installing CS3 on my own machine, I could not (Camera Raw options grayed out). I checked with another local user. Same problems.
Then after reading this thread and purging the folder cache things started working, as I wanted them at least. I would assume the folder cache came from CS2.
So my question how does this really work? I will want to selectively use it in the future. If I look at the metadata for a NEF image is see camera data (exif) and camera raw data as expected. But I see neither for this image. And I would not expect a scanner to be embedding raw settings unless it truly supports a raw format.
When I tweak a few ACR settings and click done, the file is updated but no XMP sidecar file is created. I can now see camera raw settings in the metadata panels. This is not what I would expect. And I cant find any camera raw settings in the Photoshop file info panels for either file.
So, how do I control this behavior for future TIF images? Will I have to purge folder cache if it was created with CS2?
    Cheers, Rags :-)

  • Corrupted RAW files

    Hello all,
After taking about 10,500 pictures (99%+ in RAW) with a Canon EOS 20D since getting it last August, my two most recent imports to Aperture have shown some corrupted images.
My usual workflow is to copy the images to my hard drive, run the Adobe DNG Converter (v3.3) on them (to reduce their size), burn the original RAWs (.CR2) to DVD and remove them from the hard drive, then import the DNG files to Aperture.
This time, I've seen half a dozen files with visible corruption. It looks like a block of pixels, approximately square (although several of them may be adjacent to one another making the corrupted area look like a rectangle or an L).
On one of them, I located the original RAW (.CR2) file and also imported it. That file is actually NOT corrupted and looks just fine.
So, I don't know what the problem may be. It could be any of these listed next. Perhaps anyone has seen this and resolved it before?
*) DNG converter messed up the conversion
*) Disk corruption on the DNG file
*) Aperture doesn't read the DNG file correctly (although I've tried both 1.0 and 1.1)
    *) Something else I haven't thought of
I welcome any thoughts on the matter.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Doug, I have been experimenting with the DNG format lately and how Aperture handles it. I have a Nikon D2X and shoot 100% RAW. Normally, I bring my .NEF RAW files from the memory card directly into Aperture. Importing the RAW files directly this way has been no problem. Neither has first copying the RAW files from the camera card to my hard drive, and then importing them into Aperture.
However, I have been using another program lately that enhances the RAW files from my camera, and the only RAW format it outputs is DNG. So naturally, I have run a number of my RAW files through this program, created the DNGs and imported them into Aperture. The results were not pretty. The imported DNGs were no bigger than a thumbnail with added noise and visible distortion. I have also read these exact same DNG files into Adobe Camera Raw and they were rendered perfectly.
I next converted the same original RAW files to DNG using Adobe's DNG converter (both 3.3 and 3.4) and read them into Aperture. The Adobe converted DNG files were all fine. No visible signs of problems even at the highest magnification.
I presume that you have tried reconverting the same RAW files to DNGs again and retried the import into Aperture with the same results.
I think your first and third conclusions on what is wrong were right. There is something about the makeup of the original pictures that the DNG converter can not handle properly. This problem is not enough to affect working with these DNG files in Camera Raw, but it is for Aperture. Aperture seems to be especially sensitive to how DNGs are constructed. The slightest thing wrong with an image file (either in its construction or EXIF information) and Aperture can not properly process and render the image.
I would say that disk corruption is very unlikely.
Until DNG is fixed in Aperture, I will only import my native RAW files into Aperture.

  • Is there a way to save Aperture RAW edits (previews) as .tif files?

In iPhoto Preferences/Advanced, it is possible to choose to save RAW edits as .tif files. The resulting files are then stored in the Previews folder inside the iPhoto Library. In Aperture, edits of RAW files are stored in the Previews folder as .jpg files. I am aware that I can export the edited versions as .tif files outside of the Aperture Library. Is there a way to do it inside the Aperture Library, just the way iPhoto does??

Probably collecting everything on an artboard into a new layer might give you the option to use a script to save layers to files.
But this is a feature request but no as of yet has suggested a way that this might work, at least I do not think so.

  • Corrupt RAW files in Lightroom 5.

I'm having an issue with corrupt RAW files in Lightroom 5. I have all of my RAW files stored on an external NAS system. Typically, I mainly work on my files on my PC's hard drive. The NAS is for storage only. However, in the past I have looked through the external files with Adobe Camera RAW and have called up files from there to work on, if it's a photo I want to rework. Recently I have started using Lightroom 5. So the other day, I added a folder from the NAS external to Lightroom 5 to look at some of the RAW files. A LOT of the files looked corrupt with white blocks and pink or yellow lines running across the photo. I closed lightroom and pulled up those same files in Adobe RAW and get the same issue. I copied them to my PC's hard drive and still have the issue. This has never happened until using Lightroom. I know Lightroom is not supposed to actually do anything to the files, however, this is very coincidental. Did Lightroom do something to these images, or was it coincidence that the files became corrupt at the same time I started using Lightroom? Any solutions?

I am wondering about the drive. I know that it is not the CF card and it wasn't a reader for the following reasons. I download directly from the camera to the PC without a reader. I downloaded these last July and worked on them on and off for several weeks without issue. I have also pulled up the occasional file from this same batch a couple times this winter without issue. It was only when I pulled them up yesterday in Lightroom that this problem occurred.

  • Elements 11 will not convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif.

Dowmnloaded Elements 11 thinking it would convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif, but it will not why?

Can you open the raw files in the editor ? If yes, simply save your opened file from the editor in whatever format you want. The import dialog in ACR (Adobe raw converter) is only for the in-memory conversion to the Adobe image format; you have to save to the desired file format from the editor.
If you can't open your raw files, see:

I believe you need PSE11 with the Camera Raw plug-in 7.1 or newer.
