Help! Corrupted file system....

Hi all,
One of the partitions on my external hard drive (Mac OS Extended Journaled) has a corrupted file system. This occurred right after I installed the latest NTFS-3G driver, which allows read/write of NTFS drives (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/). The external HD was accessed via my Airport Extreme (so it was an "Air Drive"). When I connected it directly to my MBP and used Disk Utility to Verify/Repair, I got the following error messages:
*Invalid node structure*
*Invalid B-tree node size*
*Volume check failed.*
*Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.*
What is going on here and how can I fix it??? I should note that I've already uninstalled NTFS-3G but the problem persists. Also, it's not a physical problem with external HD, since the other two partitions on the disk appear fine.
Any help would be much appreciated!

It would have to have been a pretty big coincidence since it happened immediately afterward...but you're right, I have no way of knowing for sure. I've never had a hard drive do this; I've been a windows user until about a year ago. I thought the HFS+ file system was supposed to be better...Ironically, the good old FAT32 partition on the same drive is still going strong.
Disk Warrior is a $99 purchase. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me to try before I plunk down the cash? BTW, Drive Genius 2 and also failed to repair it.

  • Help - odd file system corruption.

I have something very worrying going on on my system. The contents of an important folder is being listed differently in 3rd party applications vs the Finder. Apps which use a non-OS file browser cannot see the up to date contents (its an important project I'm currently working on), instead they only list folders from months ago which are now long gone and don't show the current true contents at all. Eg Cinema 4D's Content Browser can't see the current files correctly, but it can just fine via the OS Open/Save dialog.
Even worse is that Chrono Sync has exactly the same problem. When it syncs it correctly lists some of the current files that I'm working on, but in the Anylise section, manually drilling down to my working project folder again shows the incorrect contents!
I have copied the directories to a new HD but even THEY show the same errors when not viewing the contents directly with Lion file browsers***
I can remember once when I first saw this in Cinema 4D I immediately checked in the Finder - and the Finder showed the wrong contents too !- I refreshed the Finder window by clicking a different folder and back to the working directory which then updated before my eyes to the correct contents.
How can I fix this? It seems like there is an immenent serious corruption about to happen to my files and/or disk. Disk Utility shows no errors, nothing to repair. Can/should I use Diskwarrior or some other repair app. Help!
(***I just remembered that I used CCC in block level copy mode so this might account for why the corruption has been transferred to the new drive. I am copying the working directory to the new disk using drag nd drop in the Finder to see if that helps. However I still need the underlying corruption in my User folder repaired)

Yes, I have quite a comprehensive backup strategy in place (involving a Drobo for nightly CCC backups, a CCC nightly bootable disk clone and TM for hourly backups). The Block Copy is for the bootable disk. The nightly Drobo backups are done with vanila CCC file copying,
Disk Util does not find any problems, neither did Disk Warrior. SMART is all OK.
However as I said, the problem is present on one of the backups as well which has put the integrity of the rest of my backups in doubt. also I have tried a direct Finder copy to a new drive (instead of CCC block copy) but the problem persisted.
I have however come up with a temporary fix: I moved the current folder to the trash, navigated to the parent directory using Cinema 4D's Content Browser wherein it 'saw' the ancient folder once again. This errant folder was now also visible in the Finder since the original folder (which has the same name) was now in the trash. I renamed it and moved it to the trash too. Then put the original folder from the trash back into its parent directory and emptied the trash removing the errent folder for good. It seems that did the trick of updating whatever caches or databases were broken and all my apps can correctly see the correct folder and its contents again.
This 'historical' version of the folder was being linked to by 3rd party file browsers I think because in the past it had the same name in the same location as the current folder. Where and how the OS got confused is still a mystery. Does it keep different file system records for the finder vs other apps?
I am not 100% convinced this is a true solution though as there may well be a deeper problem afoot.
I would like to see some kind of error/fixed message from Disk Util just so I know the OS is on top of this problem. As it stands my Mac thinks everythin is A-OK.

  • IMac repeatedly corrupting file system.

Right. This is a REAL head-stractcher I've got on my hands.
I've got a white intel iMac that killed a hard-drive. Replaced that with a new WD disk. Then updated to 10.6.6 (EDIT: this is a known issue with some machines...), that ruined the file system. Did a clean install & updated to 10.6.5, restored user files & clean installed apps. This worked well for a few weeks.
    Now... here's the real bugger...
It has gone down again. Similar to what 10.6.6 did. fsck reports 'invalid node structure'. Nothing can repair it, Disk Utility, Tech Tool, Diskwarrior. All failed.
    Not a file-recovery issue, I have a TM backup.
TechTool 5 tells me that RAM & HD are fine (extended tests) same with Hardware Test on OSX disk.
I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out what is going on here. Nothing out of the ordinary happens. Shut it down, come back to it the next day: boots, Apple logo, spinning progress indicator, powers off.
Verbose / single-user show 'invalid node structure'.
My last resort is that it could be the death of the machine: maybe the processor is handing off corrupt commands = ruining the file structure?
Basically, I just don't know. It seems fine for a while, then dies suddenly & mysteriously.
    HELP?!

Addendum to my last post (I was in somewhat of a hurry):
If you will take a look at this:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/details.html
The last time I ran it on my current iMac, the directory was 36% out of order. That appears strange - I have a 1 TB hard disk and so far, only about 100 GB data on it. So, my non-techie take on it is that it will simply write all over the place - wherever there is room - and that is how you wind up with messed up directories. My suggestion is that if you use your machine heavily to run it occasionally.
Note that 1) you cannot run it from the boot disk and 2) the current version of DW is unable to boot the new iMacs. Since booting from the DW disk is a pain anyway, the simple solution is to install it on your internal and then create a bootable clone of your system (which will obviously include DW) on an external. Then, when you want to run it, simply boot from the external, run it and when done, choose to restart from your internal. Done and all is well with your hard disk.

I'm just surprise you say this used to work at all. You should never copy a file INTO another bootable disk, as it immediately messes up the permissions on that disk.
Sharing is fine for accessing files on another mac and copying files FROM that machine back on to the machine you're currently booted into. If you want to send a file to the other machine (the one you're not booted into) you should boot into that machine first, and then copy it FROM the first machine.
The other way to do it is to set up a shared Dropbox folder on each machine and place your files in there, which will update the files on the other machine when you boot into it.
Anything else is going to keep giving you permissions problems, I'm afraid.

  • Recurrent corrupt file system of internal hard disc

    Hi,
on my MacBook Pro Late 08 I get some file system corruption over and over again. Normaly I would guess having a defect hard disc but I have already tried three different discs. The problem always comes back.
I recognize the corruption by having multiple crashes of several applications (Firefox, iPhoto, iWorks, ....) having some exception type of EXCBADACCESS. This type seams to indicated that something cannot be read correctly anymore. After repairing the disk everything works fine again.
Is it normal that MacOS filesystem is not that stable and gets corrupt from time to time? I cannot find out any reproduction pattern so far.

I have exchanged the original disc to a larger 500GB/7200 2 month after getting the new MacBook. To narrow down the problem I switched to a 500GB/5400 another 6 month later. I always moved with a SuperDuper Backup from disk to another. My disc usage is about 90%.
I tent do believe it has something to do with the power management of the Mac. Between a healthy file system and a corrupt one is always one or more system sleeps.
But the output of the disk utility is also weird. Three successive runs state at the end:
    1)
    Invalid node structure
The volume MacBookPro internal could not be verified completely.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
    2)
The volume MacBookPro internal was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
    3)
The volume MacBookPro internal appears to be OK.

  • Need help with File system creation fro Oracle DB installation

    Hello,
I am new to Solaris/Unix system landscape. I have a Sun enterprise 450 with 18GB hard drive. It has Solaris 9 on it and no other software at this time. I am planning on adding 2 more hard drives 18gb and 36gb to accommodate Oracle DB.
Recently I went through the Solaris Intermediate Sys admin training, knows the basic stuff but not fully confident to carry out the task on my own.
I would appreciate some one can help me with the sequence of steps that I need perform to
    1. recognize the new hard drives in the system,
    2. format,
    3. partition. What is the normal strategy for partitioning? My current thinking is to have 36+18gb drives as data drives. This is where I am little bit lost. Can I make a entire 36GB drive as 1 slice for data, I am not quite sure how this is done in the real life, need your help.
    4. creating the file system to store the database files.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Here is the rough idea for HA from my experience.
The important thing is that the binaries required to run SAP
are to be accessible before and after switchover.
In terms of this file system doesn't matter.
But SAP may recommend certain filesystem on linux
please refer to SAP installation guide.
I always use reiserfs or ext3fs.
For soft link I recommend you to refer SAP installation guide.
In your configuration the files related to SCS and DB is the key.
Again those files are to be accessible both from hostA and from hostB.
Easiest way is to use share these files like NFS or other shared file system
so that both nodes can access to these files.
And let the clustering software do mount and unmount those directory.
DB binaries, data and log are to be placed in shared storage subsystem.
    (ex. /oracle/*)
SAP binaries, profiles and so on to be placed in shared storage as well.
    (ex. /sapmnt/*)
You may want to place the binaries into local disk to make sure the binaries
are always accessible on OS level, even in the connection to storage subsystem
    losts.
In this case you have to sync the binaries on both nodes manually.
Easiest way is just put on shared storage and mount them!
Furthermore you can use sapcpe function to sync necessary binaries
    from /sapmnt to /usr/sap/<SID>.
For your last question /sapmnt should be located in storage subsystem
and not let the storage down!

  • Time Machine corrupting file system

I've been using Time Machine on an external hard drive for a long time with success. Recently the volume got corrupted and I could not repair it from disk utility. After formatting the drive I did backups for a few more days and it happened again. I used diagnostic tools from the disk manufacturer and they did not indicate any physical failure in the equipment.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
    Thanks in advance!

That misbehavior is typical of a failing disk, diagnostics or not.  Replace it.

  • RAC using templates /u01 corrupt file system

    Hi,
newbie to the forum - please be gentle ;o)
Trying to install RAC using virtualbox and templated. Get to the point of just before first boot interview when vnc'd into the virtual machines. But the boot fails with a corrupt /u01. ANyone had corrupt /u01 before ? How to stop it happening ? I tried to continue by using "fsck -a" but it would not allow automatic fix. So I tried manually going through each error ( but there are thousands ). Also tried taking /u01 out of fstab to get first interview. But then the installed failed after doing buildcluster.sh due to same issue ( corrupt /u01 ).
Have tried creating new VMs - always getting corrupt /u01.
    Any thoughts / ideas welcome.
    Thanks.

    Arf,
I am new to RAC. I analyzed Alejandro's script. He is main connection is to the first instance; then through sql*plus, he gets connected to the second instance. he exits the second instance and starts with RMAN backup to the database . Therefore the backup to the database is done from the first instance.
I do not see where he setenv again to change to the second instance to run RMAN to backup the second instance. It looks to me that the backup is only done to the first instance, but not to the second instance. I may be wrong, but I do not see the second instance backup.
Kindly, I request your assistance on the steps/connection to backup the second instance. Thank you so much!! Terry

It will not delete from my trash as it is saying "Japanese.lproj" is in use. I have never opened or used "Japanese.lproj".
Interesting. This sort of thing is more common on Windows systems. Taken at face value, one of the iTunes program files (one of the Japanese language resources) is damaged.
I'd try running your Disk Utility over your startup disk. Does it find/repair any damage? If so can you empty your trash and reinstall your iTunes successfully now?

  • Help needed deleting corrupted file

    G'day,
I have a corrupted file on my hard disk. It is a Vault backup file created by Aperture. Whenever I do anything with the file (e.g., try to unlock it, try to view info, try to open it), the o/s immediately tells me that I have to manually turn off the system (which is what I understand to be a kernel panic).
I have tried to delete the file using the terminal window and by placing the file into a folder and moving the folder to trash. In all cases, I'm told to manually shut down the computer (even when I tried to empty the trash).
It's a 30 gig file, so I'd like to be able to delete it in order to save the hard disk space. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll reformat the drive if I have to, but I'd prefer to remove just the file.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Doug

Sometimes it happens that the Finder just doesn't want to empty the trash anymore and says "The operation cannot be completed because the item "" is in use.". That's a good warning if it is true, but sometimes you want to get rid of an application and this warning appears even though the only thing running is the Finder. Usually after a restart you can delete it. But that is very time consuming and even then, it is sometimes still stuck not wanting to be deleted. There is a risky command that can be used in the Terminal that will empty the trash no matter what. Risky because a simple error in the syntax could erase a lot of stuff that you want to keep.
There is a much easier and quicker way of forcing the Finder to empty the trash no matter what! It is done in the freeware customization and maintenance application OnyX (download @ http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html ). Once you loaded OnyX and entered your administrator password, choose "Cleaning" in the top bar. Click on the "Trash" tab. You can now choose whether you want to "Delete" or to "Securely Delete" (by overwriting) and click Execute. That's it, it will force the Finder to empty the trash even if the files are in use!

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
