    How do you read it?
My guess is that you depend on the platform default encoding to read it. That's almost always a bad idea.
Also, if it works on Windows and doesn't work on Linux, then I suspect the file is not actually stored in UTF-8 format, even 'though the header says it is (Windows traditionally uses a non-UTF-8 encoding by default, modern Linux installations usually use UTF-8).

  • Need help to upload Excel Chinese data into Oracle

    Hello
I am very new at internationalization. We are writing an application that
reads Chinese data from a Microsoft Excel file and writes it out into Oracle
8i. This is what we have done:
    1. Use JDBC-ODBC driver to read the Excel data directly from .xls.
    2. Write data into oracle database.
When we open Excel, we can view the Chinese characters. When we use SQL
PLus, we see only ????. When we write another servlet to retrieve the data,
it is displayed as ????. The few questions I have are:
    1. How can I verify that the Chinese data has been accurately inserted into
    the database?
    2. Do I need to set anything special (environment variables, config files
etc) in BEA Weblogic 5.1 and Oracle 8i?
    The environment we have are:
    1. BEA Weblogic SP9 running on WIn NT.
    2. Oracle 8i running on Solaris.
    Thanks

Make sure that the characters are correct in the app server after you get
them out of Oracle and before you put them into the web page. This will help
you determine if the problem is in the JDBC access to Oracle or the encoding
into the web page. Make sure that you verify that the hex values of each
character from the db test case are what you expect.

    Hi Kev
    1. "It doesn't work" means that I still see ??? in the database. WHen I
retrieve the data, it is still displayed as ??? in a browser.
    2. Codeset to use to display should be UTF-8.
    3. Charset in database server is UTF8. I did a "select * from
    database_parameters" to get this value.
    4. I copied the Chinese characters from Excel and pasted on Notepad. Icould
see the Chinese characters with the Chinese emulator turned on. WHen Icopy
??? from SQL*Plus and paste it into notepad, I see ???.
    Presume:
    1. Yes, running SQL*PLUS on BEA machine.
    2. BEA machine running on WIndows 200 professional. We downloaded aChinese
emulator. WIndows 2000 is the English version.
    Cheers

    Hi Bernard,
    Please first clarify:-
    1) "It doesn't work" means... cannot display the chinese character as
    you
    desired?
    2) Which codeset that you want it to display, Chinese traditional big5?UTF-8,
i would think it's still in Java/JDBC codeset.
    3) What's the charset in the database server? Get help from DBA if you
    not
    sure
    how to obtain this information.
    4) Try paste the result(select via SQL*Plus) onto Win Notepad, what's
    the
    outcome?
    Presume:
    1) you're running SQL*Plus on your BEA machine?
    2) BEA machine is running on Chinese O/S or hv NJStar installed andrunning?
Let me know if i could be of further help.

    Thanks Kev.
We had changed the registry in the BEA machine to
    AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8.
THis was done for the Oracle registry in the BEA machine.
    Unfortunately,
    it
    still doesn't work.

    Hi Bernard,
I take about the same approach as you while resolving codeset
    problem.
    So,
    first
i make sure SQL*Plus could display my desired result before proceedto
    application(be
it Swing, servlet, JSP console etc..). You may try set the NLS_LANGon
    your client
machine(same machine as where you run SQL*Plus) to the SAME as
    database
    server
character set, for instance America_American.US7ASCII. You should
    able
    to
    see
    the Chinese characters.
Hope this help with your first question. I can't help for the restanyway.
    good luck!

  • How to read chinese text in Quickoffice

I wish to know if there is any plugin that allows me to read chinese text (preferably in UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding) in Quickoffice.
There also don't seemed to be a free ebook reader that supports both english and chinese encoding.
Anyway knows anything at all, please help. Thanks

    Use Read_text function module.
    you need to pass
    ID
    LANGUAGE
    NAME
    OBJECT   to the function moduel
To find the Text id name language and object these are the following steps. Example: FB02
    1. goto FB02, Enter Document number
    2. from menuselect Goto>Header-->header Text..... New window will be displayed
    3. select the Header Text. here you can see all the text.
    4. click on the TEXT (which you want to know the Text id) , then press log ICON (you can find in bottom right of the text window) it looks like a rolled paper.
    5. in the Next window you will find Text Name. Text ID, Language. etc...

  • How to read chinese in N97 Mini?

I just bought it in the UK
How can it read chinese in texting and web browsing?
Any software can be installed to solve?

Language support on Nokia phones is a bit of an embarrassment, to be honest. It's pretty hopeless.
As an end user there's nothing you can do yourself. What you can do is take the phone to your nearest Nokia Care Point and ask them to install a Chinese language pack for you. This will give the phone support for Chinese ideograms, both for display and for input. However, please bear in mind that:
    1) Not all NCPs will do this for you. Some will claim that it's impossible, and indeed it may well be impossible if you got your phone from an operator rather than SIM-free from an independent retailer or direct from Nokia.
    2) You may well be charged for this. The absence of Chinese language support in a phone intended for the UK market is not a fault in the phone, so the warranty cannot be invoked.
    3) If you update the firmware at a later date, the chances are that this will wipe out the language pack that was installed and you'll have to have it installed again.

  • Couldn't read from socket error: Is this a bug in Java?

I have been facing this grave problem for a long time now. After establishing a socket connection with some server:port say 207.123.17.20:1865, I get this error "Couldn't read from socket" as an IOException. I can neither read or send any packets to the server after receiving this error. On checking whether the socket connection is alive or not, I print socket.getAddress() and it returns me the ip of the server to which it is connected. The specification says that receiving this error means the socket was closed by the server. If it so then how I am able to print the server address after receiving this error? How can I get around this problem? Plz. help...

    watertownjordan said:
If your computer (client) killed the connection, it should throw an error >pointing to the OS closing the connection. but what if my client app cntrl alt del while the server is waiting to here from the client.
my client may sit idle for hours and then contact again. i want to keep their socket connected but if they cntrl alt del then i want to close the socket so the thread on the server side can be exited.
the way i solved this was to send an "i'm still here" message to the serv in a timer every 10 seconds and set the time out on the server side to 30 seconds.
i used a syncronized boolean variable like so:
        volatile private boolean out1busy = false;
        private synchronized boolean getOut1busy(){
         return out1busy;
        private synchronized void setOut1busy(boolean on){
         out1busy = on;
}then in the timer i do this
            while (getOut1busy()) try { Thread.sleep(40); } catch (InterruptedException ex) {}
            setOut1busy(true);
            lobbyOut.println("-1");
setOut1busy(false);it seems to work fine but the loop using the thread.sleep does not seem right and i know very little about this all.
i'm basically asking the same thing as Chintan.Kanal
Is there any way I can test whether the socket connection is alive from the server side?
does my approach above have flaws.
again it seems to work but i am not very Java savy lol.

  • How to read Chinese Characters in iTunes?

    Hi all,
Is there anyone who can enlighten me on how I can read chinese characters in iTunes? I have quite a number of Chinese songs that I wish to be played in iTunes, but I noticed that it does not read the chinese song titles and had small rectangles in place of the chinese characters.
I tried using a third-party software lke NJStar, but the chinese characters resulted were crammed together and were not legible.
    Please help. Thanks.

    now instead of small
little squares, there are funny symbols and letters
that don't make any sense whenever there are
    supposedly chinese characters.
That probably means that the id3 tags on your songs are not encoded correctly. I understand that the program ConvertZ can help fix this.

  • Console logs: Couldn't read user-specified computer name

Last night I was experiencing frozen apps, was unable to open web pages and could not open the Apple menu to Restart computer. Somehow I eventually managed to Restart and everything seemed OK.
When I checked in Console logs tonight, I saw this message:

I found BDAqua"s reply to a similar problem dated 4/14/08 - "Try editing it in both places in Sharing Pref pane." However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.

    Hi there,
However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
    In System Preferences>Sharing Pref pane...
Then click on the edit button to verify, it'll have the .local after it here.

I can't read Chinese mails from my pals in China.
    They show like this:
I tried to change the encoding, but nothing changed.
What's wrong with it? how can i read this mail?
For one of these messages, go to View > Message > Long Headers and tell us what the Content-Type header says. That is the encoding you need to choose in Message > Text Encoding.
Everytime I write in Chinese and
Japanese, I have to change to the encoding of the
right language manually, otherwise my friends won't
be able to read them. How can Mail recognize what
language I am writing in and change to the right
    encoding automatically?
The encodings being used by Mail are already "right" by international standards, but the software being used by your friends apparently requires something else. You can fix it for one of the languages with the info in this note, but the other you would still have to do manually:
