  • Bt - yahoo identity crisis ... help!

This might seem obvious to those in the know but I have an email identity crisis - am I BT, am I Yahoo, or am I both?
I  signed up with BT Broadband a few years ago and have an email address  [email protected]
If I want to access my emails via a web address I go to yahoo uk (why yahoo, why not BT?)
I set up something called a disposable email address ( addressguard) and it forced me into the format [email protected]  (why yahoo.co.uk and not btinternet.com like my main email address?)
I had a query about setting up this disposable address as an account in outlook so I emailed the yahoo uk help team (as it's a yahoo.co.uk arress) , but had a reply that as I am BT I must go to something called BT-yahoo for support.
Confused? Yes I am. Can anyone explain????

BTs email services are provided by Yahoo!  You can log in at any of the Yahoo! websites around the world (yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.es, yahoo.fr etc) using your BTInternet credentials, and you'll end up at the same place,
You can even login at btinternet.com if you wish !

That's just the way it is, I'm afraid. Disposable addresses are of the form [email protected]
If you want another @btinternet.com address it'll have to be one associated with a sub account. They can be disposable too - just delete it when you're finished with it, and create another. The only drawback with using sub accounts is that the number of simultaneously active accounts is limited, whereas you can have up to 500 disposable @yahoo.co.uk addresses.

Personally, I think you're better off posting queries here...

  • Crisis: iMac wont start up.....logs attached! Help!

My iMac had been constantly freezing while starting up since last week.....after the chime it goes to the grey screen and then a grey screen with distorted lines and dots and the bottom part turns dark grey, sometimes blue.
Its a late 2009 27' 2.6 Quad i7, but it would boot fine in safe mode. Issue is that the DVD Rom doesn't work and airport/usb/fw would not appear in safe mode either.
So i decided to install a new hard drive with a fresh installation of 10.6.8 and then copy my data from the old drive and install all software from scratch.
Had a tech install the drive, he installed the OS through firewire from my MBP.
The iMac powered on just fine, i registered the name etc and then just to see that the freeze issue was gone, i restarted a few times. On the 5th restart i got the grey screen with the distorted graphics again. Tech decided to take out ram and install new ram. Same result. Then after he re-installed my old RAM, the system wouldnt start up at all and i would get the beep after 5 seconds. Just now i tried installing the Ram in different sockets and it powered on but again froze on the distorted screen. I safe booted and copied ALL MESSAGES and SYSTEM.LOG from console.
i cant read this stuff and the apple techs in my country are totally useless.
I would so appreciate if someone can tell me what errors, issues are causing this behavior.......
i shall attach the log files in a reply message below so it is easier to read.
This happned at the worst possible time. I had been contemplating selling this machine and buying a used mac pro. now i cant sell this before i fix it and i have lost the mac pro deal. I can afford a new mac but because they wont run Snow Leopard i dont feel confortable at all. I really need to squeeze a few months out of this machine. Would highly appreciate some help!

  • HELP! Tiger to Leopard CRISIS!

    So here's what happened-
I installed Leopard onto my powerbook, and everything worked fine.
I attempted to open a music recording program(pro tools) on my computer, and later found out this program does not function with leopard.
This program is something that i use almost every day so i needed to downgrade back to Tiger.
I put in the Tiger disk, and it said that i could not downgrade.
I ended installing Tiger onto a different part of my harddrive, however i did not uninstall Leopard.
Now, I want to know how I can get back to the Leopard part of my hard drive, cause all of my files are there.
If anyone has any help please let me know ASAP!!
    THANKYOU

Please clarify. Do you have two partitions on the drive? One with 10.4 and one with 10.5? Can you see icons for both partitions on the desktop? If This is the case, you should be able to access any files on either partition regardless of which one you are booted from. Please explain how you are attempting do do this. What error messages if any are you getting?

  • IPT Crisis! Help!

I bought the iPT 16gb three weeks ago in a retailer in Detroit, MI while in a Travel and here are my issues:
    - Frozen screen after syncing. Totally dead.
    - Coverflow, photos 90º flip and Safari web page 90º flip doesn't work when restarted. After some hours of using, works. But it would eventually freeze.
    - When I restart, the whole screen and the apple appears darker. I need to wait literally for hours to get answer. Even restarting it with the PC.
    - Songs were skipping and no sound was reproduced whatsoever.
    - I tried restarting, reseting, turning on-off, everthing.
I'm totally dissapointed with my device. I think it brings innovation and style but it just doesn't work. I've tried everything.
I live in Venezuela and there are no Apple stores here, just second hand "Authorized Dealers". Should I call directly to the retailer in Detroit to send back my unit? Who should I contact? What should I do? There aren't too many options for people in Latin America.
Please help... I'm totally ****** off and I'm about to throw the damm thing to the wall.

Why don't you call the Apple support number here in the U.S. (use Skype). Maybe you can bring it to a service center in Venezuela. Apple has authorized service centers in Venezuela, not just resellers: http://latam.apple.com/service/find.php?srchType=Reseller&frmCountry=Venezuela&b tnBuscar.x=36&btnBuscar.y=17
What part of Venezuela are you from? My wife's from Puerto La Cruz.

  • Crisis!!! sleep/wake button broken, blank screen, unable to restart... HELP!!

my sleep/wake button is not functioning and i just had a black screen. My friends are able to call me and they tell me it rings but i just get a blank screen. i really dont know how to restart and beg someone to  help me. Thank you... (iPhone 5)

If there is a broken button there is nothing you can do. Take the phone to an Apple store and they will replace it, as all 5's are still in warranty. Make a genius bar reservation first at https://www.apple.com/retail.

  • In state of crisis viz a viz Eudora and Lion, please help

I have been using Eudora 4-ever, and depend on it completely.  It came as a SHOCK after I bought a new MacBook Air with Lion to find out that I cannot run Eudora on it.  I have had my Air for a month now without using it yet because I don't know what to do.  As I see it my options are:
    1) Try to zap Lion and put Snow Leopard on the Air.  But I understand this may not work, although it might be my first choice.
    2) Get Mailforge or Eudora OSE to replace my Eudora, but in checking out reviews nobody seems very happy with them.
    3) Migrate to the Lion version of Apple Mail.  This sounds like it might be ok, EXCEPT, many people note connection issues with their ISPs, and say that Apple Mail is much slower than the others to send and receive mail from their ISPs.  Because I spend half of my time traveling for work in Third World countries with s-l-o-w internet connections, I wonder if Apple Mail will drive me nuts with dropped connections, no connection at all, or very very slow operations.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?  I need advice.  I am even thinking of returning my Air and forgetting about the whole thing.
Experiences and advice will be appreciated.

I had to confront the same reality after using the work horse Eudora since 1995. This was my last PPC app and it was like a hit below the belt.
Six months before the launch of Lion I started experimenting in a sandbox (bootclone) preparing for the switch.
I researched and tried many many alternatives including the new Eudora projects that came along. In the end the only contender was Mailforge, however very dissappointing in its lack of progress, functionality and woefully unimpressed with its updates and progress.
In a safe environment I experimented no less than 3 or 4 different imports to Mail in a fresh bootclone environment.  Everytime I learned something new about how to best import and loose the least amount, refining the import process.
Finally committed myself just two weeks prior to Lion's release. I will have to say I am very happy with Mail. True you do not have all that Eudora offered- there is no comparision to this old work horse mail client.
There are a few important resources:
    https://itservices.stanford.edu/service/emailcalendar/email/eudoramigration/maco sxmail
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Eudora_Mailbox_Cleaner.html
I still have a functional bootclone of OS X Snow Leoprard with Eudora as a backup if I need something from the archives. So far I have not needed to rely on this backup.
The conclusion for me, best bet was to move to Apples built in Mail. It is a good feeling knowing I can move forward with confidence in upgrading OS as they come at me without reservation.  Yes there are a few things I miss like RR but in reality this is not a well supported protocal across the board anyway.
The only bug that chap's my cheeks is the lack of paper clip attachments in the sent box (a known issue.)
Luckly there was a recent work around that is a beautiful relief.

Good luck and post back your final resolve!
I have had  NO problems with connection issues or being slow?  like you mention above.

  • Crisis! Please help :-(

My powerbook's display's brightness crapped out on me! For NO good reason . I was using it, I put her to sleep, then when I opened it, it worked for a few seconds then died. If I have a lot of light in the room I can see the faint image, plus I can access the PowerBook via Remote Desktop, but I can't see my screen! I've tried resetting the p-ram PMU ram all sortsa things, then I called my closest Apple recognized store and they told me that I would have to bring it in and they'll be able to tell me the problem in 3 days. I don't have 3 days! I have clients to see and impress . A friend of mine may be able to take a look at it by the end of the week, but still, I need a fix ASAP. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Jon

If it's that urgent you've got 4 options as I see it:
    1) Transfer your stuff to another Mac laptop that you've begged borrowed or stolen (not really!)
    2) Buy yourself a cheap LCD display
    3) Plug in to a TV wherever you're going
    4) Pray your display mends itself.
Let's face it it's broken and will have to be fixed and that will take as long as it takes. Miracles do happen - but VERY rarely! Good luck.

Can the iMac see any other wireless networks?

  • HELP! PASSWORD CRISIS!

Ok, I have just purchased my new MacBook Air days ago and I have forgotten my password and I have accidentally disposed of my operating system installation drive (used instead of the disc as the MacBook Air does not have a built in disc drive). The ultimate answer is to re-purchase the operating system and reload it of course, but that would also require installing an external CD drive and all sorts of things that I do not want to do and that I do not have time for.
So, taking into consideration that I know very little when it comes to command lines and what not (I would recommend cut-and paste, although do explain what is going on) here is the question: Is there any possible way to change the user password independent of the operating system drive? (specifically by going into single-user mode)

No offense to the fellow who linked that article, but this is what you need to do for our newest operating system which is 10.6 (a lot shorter and easier then 10.5!)
    Turn of the computer
Hold Command-S and turn on the computer till a bunch of computer programming stuff pops up
    Let go of those keys
    Press return
    TYPE EXACTLY AS SEEN:
    mount -uw /
    Press the return key
    TYPE EXACTLY AS SEEN:
    ls /Users
Press the return key, it'll show you a list of available users. Yours will be there you'll need to type it in exactly as you see it in a moment (no spaces)
    TYPE EXACTLY AS SEEN:
    passwd yourusernamegoeshere
Press return. It'll ask for a new password, and *THE CURSOR WILL NOT MOVE AS YOU TYPE FOR SECURITY REASONS but it is registering what you type*
    Enter the new password
    Press Return
    Enter the new password again
    Press Return
    TYPE: reboot
    Press Return
Once you login it'll ask you what to do with the keychains as it's locked. Create a new one

  • Browser on 8310 SmartPhone Edge comes up with Critical Error and cannot be used, help please?

Hi, my name is Sater and I'm the lone I.T. guy for a small medical device company (about 40 ppl) based in Fremont, CA.  So...
All of a sudden my vp of marketing comes in and says that he can't use the Browser function on his BB (8310 SmartPhone Edge) anymore.  Naturally I'm intrigued, but this is a very strange error that pops up.  It doesn't matter how many settings I go in and change, there's no budging it.  Here is what it's telling me...
"Unable to connect to the selected Mobile Data Service, please try again later.  If the problem persists please contact your administrator."
So I decide after about an hour of messing with settings and getting nowhere to call AT&T support.  They said when that error comes up with "please contact your administrator", it's because it can't connect to the BES server anymore and that we would have to consult that with whomever runs that server.  To give you a little background, we went through an outsourced Exchange provider called TheMessageCenter.com. They were alright, but my VP of R&D was pretty bent by some of the lack of customer service skills they presented to him when he was in an email crisis.  Needless to say one of the very first missions I ever had at this place was to find a new email solution and integrate the migration.
So basically AT&T said they couldn't do anything and that I would have to contact our outsourced providor (TheMessageCenter.com, since we ran both Exchange and BES through them before we switched) back to get the settings cleared off the BES server hosting his phone Pin and info.  I called them up, (mind you we had been away from TheMessageCenter.com for a good couple weeks now) and they claimed they had no other active processes running for our company anywhere on their BES servers or frankly, ANYWHERE lol.  So naturally he's looking at me to fix this, and I am seriously stumped!  Should I do some kind of Factory reset?  If so, how can I load all his contacts/settings back the way he had it?  Any help on this matter, (especially if treated as urgent... I know you hate to hear that, but I said it for all you I.T. guys haha) would be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks

    Hi,
The browser icon uses the BES service, unless you have signed up for the BIS ONLY servcie, wherein you get access to the internet through RIM's servers.
Since your servcie is a BES servcie the access to the internet is through the BES.
The MDS is a service running on the BES to authenticate you. (and thus the error)
So, No BES = No  Internet access using the Browser icon!
So, I need a little clarificatuioin.
Did you move from one BES to another? Or did the user simply switch carriers?
It sounds as if you moved from one third company BES to another third company BES... Is that right?
If so then contact your New BES and ensure that they allow ppl to use the MDS servcie for internet access (Most companies charge extra for that feature! - Because they can!).
If your hosting the BES (Now), and it was Themessagingcentre.com before, then you need to Reactivate the Handset for the  new BES. I have a feeling that he is now getting the emails through the BIS service and the handset wasnt wiped and so it is stil trying to access the old BES....
So can you please give details such as:
BES - where was it hosted:
BES - where is it now hosted:
NEW BES: Is the MDS service enabled and can people currently use it to browse?
Have you tested with other BB handsets to ensure you/user  are clicking the same icons on both handsets (most ppl do different things to access in their own way, so simply asking them if it works doesnt help!)
The alternative is to use the expensive WAP browser. It will work but will rack up huge charges.
Let us know how it goes...

  • My itunes crashes and I can't open it all. HELP

My itunes crashes and I can't open it all. Just installed the latest version 10.5.1. I can't even get it to open to try and figure out what is wrong. Can I uninstall it and reinstall the less recent version which was working? Help!!
I am not a computer guru, the reason that I love my MacBook Pro is that I don't have to worry about it, now I am worrying, because I can't get into my itunes at all. I would trash the new version of itunes and find an older version (I did try reinstalling 10.5.1) as long as I was reassured that I wouldn't lose all my music.
    Thanks all.

    Sorry to hear.
Wow, first iPad crisis with vs 5 & 501, now this?
I see the update waiting right now for my MBP, and is why I'm here to see what's up.
On the software update panel, it's all about cloud service.
Looks like 10.5 is the end of the road for me.
I can see having gaming on cloud, but with the work I put into my tunes, no way.
We'll see how people react as time goes, and the next crisis.

  • Toshiba Satellite A300-129 Crisis Recovery Mode Phoenix BIOS with USB drive

When flashing my BIOS back from v4.20 to a v3.90 I found on the net, everything went alright in windows, but as soon as I rebooted, the laptop showed the symptoms of a failed BIOS.
I'm now trying to repair the BIOS using the crisis recovery tool. I used the following procedure to create the USB stick and recover the BIOS
-Run the WINCRIS.Exe file in administrator and compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)
-Select the USB drive (1GB Kingston), and format it with the tool
-Reinsert the drive and format again with the tool without restarting it to be sure that the disk is properly formatted
-Take the BL5S3D57.WPH file from the toshiba BIOS update and rename it to BIOS.WPH, and copy to the Crisdisk directory
-Copy the files BIOS.WPH (the one from toshiba I renamed), minidos.sys and winphlash16.exe to the drive in windows
    -Take the drive out
-Plug battery out, plug AC out of laptop, hold the power button for a few seconds to make sure no remaining current is in the laptop
    -Plug the USB Drive in
-Hold Fn+Esc in my case, this is the key combination where the laptop tries to read the USB drive the moment it boots up. It has something to do with enabling a boot block in the BIOS with that key combination.
-Plug AC in while still holding the F button
The F button does not nescessarily need to be held while plugging in AC, the laptop also tries to read from the drive if I hold it after plugging AC in, and before pushing the power button.
    -Press the power button
I need to push the button twice, because the first time after plugging in AC the power button doesn't do a thing. When holding the power button for around 10 seconds after right after plugging AC in, the laptop boots sometimes, didn't find a pattern yet here.
The easy thing however is to just push the button 2 or 3 times, then it boots, and the booting procedure seems exactly the same as when holding the power button
-Wait for the LED to flash on the USB Drive. Very important: it seems to only flash ONCE for me, so it means it tries to access the drive, but I think it doesn't contain the right files or isn't formatted correctly. If I keep holding the F button while the laptop is on, the LED flashes once every 10-20 seconds.
From here on out the laptop is supposed to be reading the BIOS files from the USB drive, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. So here comes my question:
What could I be doing wrong in formatting the drive or writing the files to it?
Do I have the wrong CRISDISK? Is it normal that the files arent copied by CRISDISK to the USB Drive and that I have to do it myself?
Am I using the wrong WinPhlash? Or should I use the files that are supplied in the official BIOS rar from toshiba?
I have tried different versions of CRISDISK, different USB Drives (one 4GB would not be read by the broken laptop, and another 1GB would not be read by CRISDISK when trying to format the drive)
Tried different files on the USB Drive, tried bios.wph instead of capitals, tried BIOS.FD,...
I'm kind of running out of options here to try. Is there anyone who has experience with this recovery mode flashing that could tell me what I might be doing wrong? Or that has any suggestions on which other CRISDISK or toshiba updates to use?
Thanks anyways to people who read this and try to help!

I hope that Russian service provider will be as honest as the European one and won't solder something out as a souvenir :)
They said, it will take approximately a week.
Serviceman said that L30 has no built-in crisis recovery routine.
So I wasted money by buying an USB floppy disk drive and risked to burn something in my laptop by frequent powering it on and off (and may be burnt, will see).
The lesson I learnt is never flash BIOS if everything works and if even flash then not from Windows (btw. I flashed successfully my Satellite A300 from Windows without any problems).
Phoenix makes its BIOSes since 2001 with a crisis recovery boot block, but Toshiba locks this feature in many laptops, I think, not without a reason. Service providers want money too :)
