Help! deleted file on dropbox can i recover it on time machine?

Help I deleted my senior project! So i was responsible and synced my project with drobox and "regularly' backed up my computer. Well, after I turned it in I needed some space in my drobox and deleted my synced folder which deleted it off my computer. I backed up my computer the day after and I guess I didnt realize that I had deleted this IMPORTANT folder for awhile... So its 3 months from when I did that so too late to recover the lost files from dropbox. Is there a way I can recover the folder from time machine? The last backup was way too old before I deleted the file and I only have a backup from the day AFTER I deleted it. Please help!

  • How can i recover mail from time machine

i upgraded from lion to mountain lion few month ago. i have been backingup to time machine since day one.
last week, formatted my mac, i tried to recover my mail by using time machine, it did not show up any date for recovery.
it there a way to import back these mail? or is there a way to recover it?

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then select  Restore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Changed HD on Macbook Pro now can't recover backup from Time Machine

    Hi,
My HD gave up the ghost after running very slowly for a while on my MacBook Pro 17" 2006 model using OSX Leopard.
I bought a new MacBook Air running OSX Lion but did not recover from the Time Machine on Airport Extreme as a friend told me that files there could have been corrupted as well.
Anyway, I replaced the HD on the old machine but again decided to do a clean instal in OSX Leopard. Using a caddy I selectively pulled in all my files and documents including my iPhoto Library. I set the TM on this new HD which did not use the old sparsebundle. So this is now a complete new backup.
However, I need to recover a few old photos which somehow disappeared from the new iPhoto library. I am sure that these are still on the old TM back up file. But I cannot get to it through the TM application.
Is there anyway I can get access to previous backups using either Leopard or Lion?
I have consulted Pandini (I think that is what it is called) but they do not seem to have an answer to my specific problem.
    Many thanks
    Tariq

you want a different forum though anyone here can likely walk through this.

And as for backups, one backup set and one method are not enough and when you use the same drive that was used for an older OS that changes the set.
You show 10.7.4 so 10.7.5 now? there was a supplemental update 1.0 to deal with bug in TimeMachine also.
There is forum area for TimeMachine in OS X community.
I like "Back in Time" from same people that have TriBackup ($60) and recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner (now $39).
    Pandini is drive enclosure?

  • Can't recover iMac from Time Machine backup

    Hi there
I need your help! My photos, music, videos, and other data is gone.. Especially the photos i would like to have back, they were stored in my Aperture library (about 13.000 pictures).
For a few days ago my iMac (with Mountain Lion) wouldn't start, just showed the white screen with the 'thinking-circle' - no further… But I wasn't worried , because I had a Time Machine backup. So I restarted, holding down the option key. Then I chose to restore from the backup i had made. It started, but there wasn't going much time before it stopped, said there was an error with the backup.… When it started up again, tried again it said the same. So from there I couldn't boot the iMac, and i couldn't restore it with the Time Machine backup.
Then I made an fresh install of the OSX Mountain Lion on an other external hdd (from my Macbook Pro). I connected the external hdd to the iMac and booted from there. And then in the disk utility i could see the original hdd in the iMac. It sais - Capacity: 999,35 GB - Used: 733,3 MB. So it almost just erased/formatted… The backup hdd's capacity is: 2 TB - Used: 566 GB
Then I took my Macbook Pro and connected the backup hdd (2 TB) to it. But it didn't show me any hdd in the Finder. I opened the disk utility and there it was! The hdd showing as the other one i had connected. But the partition is grayed out. So I guess it was right that there is an error on the hdd. So i selected the hdd and pressed 'Repair disk'. It completed and said it was ok. Then i selected the partition and pressed 'Repair disk'. It took very much longer time (1-2 hours), and then it told me that it wasn't able to repair. 'Mac OS X can't repair the disk "GlennovitS 2TB". You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.'
But anyway the partition now was showing with black text, and therefore I could see it in the Finder. And opening it in the Finder showed me one folder: 'Backups.backupdb'. I can open that, and see whats in the folders (it is just VERY slow opening. Can hear the hdd working but it takes so long time to actually see the results.). So i can see the different dates from my backups, open and see whats backuped. And i can look through the folders and find the folder where my Aperture library is stored, and its there! So i copied it and tried to paste it to my other external hdd. But it wouldn't. It showed me the error: 'The Finder can't complete the operation because some data can't be read or written (Error code -36).'
I have googlet a lot, and tried a lot now. Both the hdd's is Mac OS (Journaled) format. There is space enough on the other hdd. I have tried using the 'dot_clean' operation in Terminal, to the library and to the folder that its located in, and then try copying again - still no success. Also tried to copy through Terminal with some 'sudo cp…' . Also I tried to remove the file-extension from the library (.aplibrary) so it should become an ordinary folder, but in the info of the file, the field with name is grayed out, can't edit in there. Also tried to compres the library or the folder its in, to a ZIP file, but it can't do that either. Tried to use a program called 'JFileRecovery' but didn't work either. Then I connected it to a Windows 7 pc, but it can't see the hdd at all.. I have also tried to connect the backup hdd to the iMac (booted from the clean installed external hdd) instead of the Macbook Pro, but it makes no difference.
If you need info about my setup it is:
    iMac 27" 3,1 GHz - i5 - 12 GB ram - 1 TB hdd
Time Machine Backup drive: WD external - 2 TB
    Second external: iomega 1 TB
Extra boot hdd (with the clean Mountain Lion install) : iomega 250 GB
    Macbook Pro 15" - 2,53 GHz core2duo - 4 GB ram - 250 GB hdd
    Aperture file size: 163,29 GB
My iTunes library was about 2.000 songs and 100 videos + app's + podcast… (haven't tried copying that yet, only the images because they are my main issue…)
If you have read all this, thank you for that. Hope you see my frustration and hopefully have some ideas of what to do?.. Recover from the original hdd - recover backup hdd - or fix the files / copy them from the corrupted backup somehow? Please help...
    From Glenn :-)

If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue 3 . There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.
That means that ideally you should use another bootable drive to download and run Data Rescue. Or booted from another Mac in firewire mode. Also, there is always the option of ordering or going to the store to  purchase the DVD. Then running from the optical drive.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

    Either of these should help.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.whatsizemac.com/
Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.

  • SMB Users can't move or delete files, Mac users can

    Hi all,
I'm using Leopard Server with a share point set up with the following details:
LDAP directory is where the users and groups are stored.
There is a group called 'techie' which has several users assigned to it.
Share point called 'Software' is set up with ACL for 'techie' to have Full Control.
AFP protocol settings are 'inherit permissions from parent'.
SMB protocol settings are 'Enable oplocks' and 'inherit from parent'.
I have propagated permissions down to all folders.
The user can log in from a Mac with Leopard installed, as his own username which belongs to the 'techie' group and he can move files on this share, he can delete then, rename them, whatever he wants (connection is by AFP).
When connecting using SMB from Windows XP or Vista, using the same username which is part of 'techie', he cannot do this. He gets permission errors etc.
Anyone have any idea why, or what might cause this? Is it a setting or a bug?
    Regards,
    David.

    I'm having a semilar issue:
I can login in from Windows XP SP2 but I can't delete files.
I can write to the directory and read files but I cannot delete them.
    Thanks.

I accidentally didn't save a document on my desktop--a report.  Can I go back with time machine and recover my desktop and save the file?

If you saved it at least once, then time machine should have a copy of the document at the state you last saved it.  I'm guessing tha's not the case however or the copy of the file would still be on your Desktop.
If you never saved it a single time, yet closed the window and dismissed the warnings about an unsaved document, then you are out of luck as far as I know.

  • HT201250 Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

    NO!
Time Machine is not an Archival Backup. It will keep files for a while, but if it needs the space, it will delete files that no longer exist on the hard drive.
Get a couple external drives and move the files to both of them.

Please advice  me what shoud be the maximum file size that can be uploaded at one time.
    Thanks in advance.
    Honey

    Hi,
By default the maximum file size is 128 MB. You can configure that in visual administrator.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/05/35e13d8ee48f5ee10000000a114084/frameset.htm
If you as administrator need to upload a file with larger size, you can use km file repository like etc. and can upload file from OS.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

  • Does Time Capsule back up everything on my computer? If I inadvertently delete photos from iPhoto can they be retrieved from Time Capsule?

Does Time Capsule back up everything on my computer? If I inadvertently delete photos from iPhoto can they be retrieved from Time Capsule?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
Also, see Pondini's Time Machine FAQ

  • HT201250 Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

If you try to use a new disk with time machine, it will try to reformat your EXHD. so I would save the items on your EXHD before backing up with time machine or partitioning your EXHD in disk utility
