  • Help! Used "Secure Delete Free Space" on Spring Cleaning App...

Okay, so I don't know a whole lot about computers or anything. Someone told me to use Spring Cleaning to delete free space on my macbook pro because that would make my computer more secure and wouldn't allow any deleted files to be recovered. So I did, and now I have zero KB left of space. I guess I should have known that "delete free space" literally meant delete all of your free space, but why would anyone tell me to do that? Now I have no room to add anything to my computer. So I need to know how to reverse this, and if I can't, what my options are other than get an external hard drive and suck it up.

    Hello c:
I do not like third-party applications that affect data or system files - for a variety of reasonably good reasons.
For future reference, use disk utility to do what you wanted to accomplish. You simply highlight your disk, click on erase, and then click on _erase free space._

  • HELP - Removing free space partition

    Hi Everyone
I have a 50GB Free Space partition on my MacBook Pro and I wanted to delete it so that I could have those 50GB back to my Macintosh HD. But I can't delete it on Disk Utility because it says it contains CoreStorage physical volumes and it doesn't show up on the diskutil partitions list. What can I do?
(Please click the image for full res)

First hold command and r keys and boot into Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility to Repair your drive first.
Then see if you can fix the partition and reclaim the space that way.
I think this is a glitch of some sort exclusively to Lion.
CoreStorage I is stored in the Lion Recovery Partition and one of it's features is full disk encryption, of the entire drive, why it's showing 50GB is beyond me.
I suspect something is wrong and your drive needs to be repaired from the Lion Recovery Partition, then perhaps it will show the true size and then you can click on the big MacIntosh HD box and use the corner draggie thing to grab as much as that 50GB remaining as possible.
Do you have Filevault enabled on the drive?

  • How to delete "Free Space" Partition?

I partitioned my MacBook Pro into 2 volumes so I could dual boot Mavericks and Yosemite Developer Preview. After testing Yosemite, I found out that it was stable enough to run on my main partition. I installed it on my main partition replacing Mavericks and deleted the second partition which included Yosemite. While deleting, somehow I was left with an empty partition called "Free Space" which I cannot delete.
I am pretty sure the problem isn't related to Yosemite being a developer preview as it could've happened under an previous stable OS. How can I merge my "Free Space" partition with Macintosh HD?
MacBook Pro with Retina display 13-inch Late 2013
    2.8GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB RAM
    Intel Iris graphics
    512GB SSD
OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 2

If you select the top partition, does ////// lines appear in the bottom right hand corner? If so try selecting them and dragging downward. Boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) during a restart and try it there.

  • Why can I no longer Delete Free Space?

I used to be able to go to disk utilities select a drive and erase free space. Now I cannot does anyone know why?

If your drive is an SSD you won't have the option to erase free space. This is expected as SSDs have their own way of clearing deleted space.

  • Delete free space

    Hi
I am trying to delete a partition with nothing in it.  It is on top, and is smaller to the two.  I went to the backup disk utility and tried to shrink the larger partition which also is the startup disk.  While in the back up disk utility and trying to resize the larger partition got an error and the process quit.  I then rebooted my computer and went to disk utility and resized my partition.  That worked fine.  Any suggestions as to what to do next.
    dave

If there's a partition immediately above the free space in the list, drag the dividing line as far down as it will go and click Apply.
If not, you need to create a partition in that space, move your data to it, and then delete the older one.

  • External Hard drive shows no space after failed "Delete Free Space" from Disk Utility

    2009 13" MBP running 10.6.8
I was clearing out a section of my external to clean it of a former client's information. The operation worked fine until it got to the "create temporary files" where it got hung for several hours. Forced quit D.U. and rebooted my machine. Now the external only shows 5MB when it should be closer to 150MB.
I have run the the following script in Terminal to show hidden files:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
Not sure what files to delete.
    Should I run:
    sudo rm -f /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/*
Will this delete the temporary items in my external or only my HD?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Fixed it! I downloaded WhatSize and found the temporary files. Deleted and retrieved all my space!

  • IDisk Utility re Detele Free Space

    HI,
I try to create more space on my hard drive. I am emptying the trash that contained 260 000 files securely and launched the iDisk to clean free space on the selected Hard Drive, But it appear that instead of creating space it takes lots of space.
I started the delete free space with 84GB available... 4 hours later I had 16.6GB available. What is due to? How comes deleting free space can minimize the available space on the Hard drive. Of course I had interrupted the process and weirdly it came back to the original available space of 84GB...strange... Any idea will help me a lot.
Thank you to all who will contribute.

  • Help needed: Disk space does not free up even after deleting files.

Background information for this problem: I have my iPhoto library on an external HD, and was importing files from that same drive into iPhoto, and began receiving messages that I was very low on disk space on my internal HD. From here, it seemed like iPhoto was using my boot drive for some kind of cache. Regardless of the actual reason, I began moving files from my internal HD to fix this problem temporarily (while I was importing).
At this point, I started fiddling with my files and found that no matter how many files I would delete from my HD, the available space in the finder would not free up. *At this point, I have less than 20GB on my HD, yet it says I have 1.23 GB available out of 108 GB.*
Here is what I have already tried to fix the problem, to no avail:
    a) Original user was using Filevault. I backed up all the files, created a new user without Filevault, and restored the files.
    b) Booted from CD and used Disk Utility to erase free space.
    c) Verified and fixed permissions
    d) Deleted all app and system caches (via CacheOut X)
    e) Fixed/Repaired all user/system preferences (via Preferential Treatment)
*Does anyone have any idea what's going on?*
    -

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I ran WhatSize and here is the result. Oddly, it says there is 40.2 GB used (in the top-left) which conflicts with the information directly below it: "Capacity 108 GB, Used 103GB, Available 4.27 GB". Not so helpful.
Disk Inventory X solved the problem, however. Much thanks! I wasted most of my weekend troubleshooting this sad issue. Anyway, Disk Inventory X revealed a bug where my external hard drive for photos was still appearing as a mounted volume, even though the HD was no longer connected. Freaky.
After moving it to the trash and deleting it, I've recovered the space.
Again, thanks! Contact me if you're curious about the details, as this might help you diagnose similar problems in the future.

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Need help deleting purchased TV episodes to free up storage space

I want to download purchased TV episodes but am told that I don't have enough free space. I've deleted episodes from "Settings" "Useage" "Video"  but the GB used value isn't adjusting under "Storage" "Useage". How do I get that value to adjust?

Do a normal sync with the computer's iTunes except first uncheck the box shown below.  Then, check the box and sync again.  It might be necessary to also do this with Movies.

  • My iPod insists that I have no more free space when I have 10 gigs left. Help?

After a whole slew of problems with iTunes today, including trying to get me to reset my iPod to its factory setting, getting the 42408, and it trying to delete all my apps, I am now faced with the problem of it telling me I am going over my itunes limit by 8 gigs. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if I were syncing a bunch of albums, but the only thing I have added to itunes recently is Queen's The Game (and no, it does not take up 10 gigs), and it is the only thing I am trying to sync. Like the title says, I still have 10 gigs of free space left, but even after reseting my computer twice, it still insists I am going over. I have no idea what to do, any help?

In the colored bargraph of storage usage in iTunes, what is listed for the various categories?

I never had any problems 'till this update.
I have deleted almost everything (how cool eh? thanks apple now ill have to see what is restorable and how, and how long will it take me..)
NO MATTER WHAT I DO the phone is becoming UNUSABLE, sometimes I cant even open mail, or take a pic to whatsapp or anything.
Ive tried all kinds of phone restarting, rebooting, logging out of itunes and app store and logging in after half an hour, deactivating location services,  etc. I have searched in forums, in the web.... There some other users out there also suffering this BAD BAD issue: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2015/01/ios-8-1-3-fix-problems.html
AND this bug or whatever it is ALSO affecting iCLOUD storage, I always have around 4GB of free space becuse I DON'T USE streaming photos, or mail etc, I only save a few little pages docs etc.
I am an experienced user. BUT something strange AND BAD is going on, I have deleted most apps also, nothing has changed.
I want my phone -for which I paid an important amount of money- back to work, I NEED it to develop my work.

    Sandy,
My ipad is back to normal.  I just kept pressing buttons on ipad and held down the reset button acting like I was trying to shut it down, but held button for at least 30 to 45 seconds and finally the apple appeared and the ipad rebooted. I rebooted it once more after I saw that everything looked normal. It came back fine. Hope you have luck with your phone.

  • Free space issue! Help!

Hello there, I am having a little bit of an issue with free space on my start-up disk. For some reason, the free space keeps going away day after day. Now, this is what we have done: Deleted files on desktop, deleted emails, deleted iTunes art-work, and we got rid of some songs on iTunes. As soon as we do any of those, we seem to lose free space. If anyone can help on this problem, that would be very grateful.
    Thank you,
    Greg

Hello! HERE is some info on freeing up disk space. I think your problem may lie in how you use your Mac. Panther 10.3.x runs its maintenance routines in the wee hours of the morning to rid itself of temp files that are created for instance when a disc is burned. If the machine is not left on all night it can't run them and you have to rely on a utility such as MacJanitor or Onyx to manually rid the system of temp files. Another problem occurs when the startup disk gets too full which will eventually bring the system down so it's important to keep at least 15% of free space at all times. HERE is MacJanitor and HERE is Onyx. I personally don't use a utility as I leave mine on 24/7/365. Tom

  • Cannot delete bootcamp partition/free space on HD (OS X Mavericks)

I am having trouble removing a bootcamp partition made a while ago. I thought removing this partition would be as simple as using disk utility to delete the partition, and extend the Macintosh HD partition back to its original size.
However, after clicking the minus sign using disk utility I am now left with 51.24GB free space where the bootcamp partition used to be and cannot seem to do anything to bring the hard drive back to one single partition.
I have tried using boot camp assistant, which is useless. I have to tick either "Install Windows 7" or "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple", and when I click to install windows 7 (which below says it can be used to remove an existing windows partition), it only lets me re-size the Windows partition to a smaller 20GB size. It does not give me the option to remove the partition like it says it does on the first page and like I have seen on examples online (which I am sure are from previous OS X versions).
I have tried going to disk utility when booting from the recovery disk, however this does not give me the option to erase the entire disk then start again from a time machine backup; it only gives me the option to erase my current 268.48GB Macintosh HD partition, which wouldn't be any use.
I have verified the disk and all seems ok. I am running OS X 10.9.1 on a mid 2010 Macbook Pro. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Memory.
Any help appreciated as I am running low on HD space on my mac and the extra 50 GB that I can't seem to free up would be very useful.

    Give this a try:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the default version of OS X that came with your computer if it came with Lion or later. If it came with Snow Leopard, then you must do this instead:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
