Help determining which Apple laptop to buy...

Hello:
I will apologize as I previously posted this topic in the wrong forum. However, I think this area might be better. Anyway...
I am going to be buying an Apple laptop and want some opinions and assistance selecting the model.
The last Apple I had was an Apple //e. Yes, I would like to return to the fold...
I would like to produce audio for podcasts and make DVDs from video of my family/children.
I program (not for a living) and mainly would use the laptop for writing, web/blog updates, and audio (iTunes and other).
Comments are appreciated.

In reference to the above...Mr. Jobs should make a new commercial for those of us who are returning to Apple. Picture this…Mr. Jobs walking around a campus. The song, Welcome back Kotter, starts playing as Steve sees an Apple Powerbook being used by a professor. Steve looks down and smiles. Gabriel Kaplan (Mr. Gabe Kotter) looks up and smiles. The words of the song begin to play as Mr. Jobs and Mr. Kaplan smile at each other. Mr. Jobs nods, Mr. Kaplan nods, and Mr. Jobs walks away as the theme song trails off. The commercial ends with the following two lines of text on the screen, “Welcome back…to that same old place that you laughed about.” Followed by “Apple.com” on the screen.

Hello Counsel,
And a hearty pre-Welcome Back. (however, I suspect your not going to see an Apple commercial with that tag-line).
I agree with ytesjammer on everything he said and that a PowerBook is the way to go. The only other consideration is how much you really will be hauling the laptop around. If your still on campus backpacking books and a laptop, size & weight would be a consideration. If you’re in a biz setting, and occasionally making biz trips with a laptop in the case, then it's not such a big deal for an occasional presentation or travel. The reason for "bigger screen is better", is that if your programming, looking long & hard at the LCD screen, the more space you have for display the better. This is also very true for timeline's on a video.
FWIW, it is that most people like the idea of portability but don't really end up carrying around a laptop all that much.
So, PowerBook, Yes.
Size determined by how much you really will be porting the computer.
Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher

  • Advice on which Mac laptop to buy / Advice about using WIndows on it.

I'd appreciate some advice on which replacement laptop to get for someone in my family who just needs e-mail, the Internet, and iPhoto--something simple, small, and portable, like the iBook or the MacBook Combo. However, he has just complicated matters by saying that he'd like to be able to use Windows on his new computer (yech).
I don't know anything about using Windows on a Mac, not even whether this feature is now built into all Macs or not. A recent post I found on virtualization (February, 2006) quotes Microsoft as saying that Virtual PC won't run on an Intel-based Mac (MacBook), though it will on the iBook and the Powerbook.
Here are the questions I'm trying to answer: (a) Is running Windows on the MacBook Combo an issue? If Microsoft doesn't make virtualization for the MacBook, are there other companies who do? (b) Are there features/lack of features on a MacBook that mean it makes more sense to get the least-expensive iBook instead or vice-versa? Again, simplicity and ease of use are the goal here, not state-of-the-art technology. (c) Can you even buy a new iBook or Powerbook any more, since the Apple website seems to feature only the MacBook?
Thanks in advance for suggestions about any of this!

    For what your
family member want to do the 1.83GHz MacBook will be
just fine. Just be aware that if they want to write
DVDs at any time they will have to purchase an
    external DVD writer.
As for Windows, there are two options for running
    Windows on a …
    1) Use Apple's software, Boot Camp…
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
… which provides the ability to use you MacBook as a
Windows computer. Please note that a restart will be
required and only one OS will be available at any one
time. Additionally it is suggested that at least a
20GB larger drive be purchased to accomodate the
    Windows partition.
    2) Use Parallels…
    http://www.parallels.com/
… which uses Virtualisation Technology. This allows
Windows to be used under Mac OS X just like Virtual
PC did with the PowerPC Macs. While this is far more
convenient it's performance does not match that of
Boot Camp although it is still rather snappy for more
requirements. It does vost money where Boot Camp is
free. Again, a larger drive is recommended.
For both Parallels and Boot Camp Windows will operate
at native PC speeds so do not consider an iBook or
    PowerBook.
Thanks, that's helpful. One more question, now that I've looked at the MacBook more carefully: We use dial-up for e-mail and the Internet; this works very well for us and we have no immediate plans to change. Since the MacBook has no internal modem, would you or anyone else reading this say the Apple USB external modem works as advertised?
I see that the Apple USB modem gets very mixed reviews--some people say it's fine, others seem to find it slower than the internal version, and several think it's a piece of junk.
Would you (or anyone else reading this) have any experience using the Apple USB modem for dial-up connection? [That's not meant to be an insult. :-)] Would we now have to expect our dial-up connections to be slower than before? Or do we just have to be sure we have the right settings, compatible server, etc.? Or is the problem Apple's product, and would a 3rd-party product work better?

  • Sick of XP! what apple laptop to buy

    hello apple users
well i have joined the iphone 3G revolution and im so impressed im now really keen in buying a apple laptop !
I currently have a Dell Laptop with 2GB RAM running XP. All I do is surf the web, do some Excel & Word docs (home finances, letters etc) and i have thousands of photos and a growing list of HD video from my Panasonic HD SD9 camcorder
I'd be really gratefull for some recommendations on what laptop model I should buy and what extra software i may need too?
are the macs as memory sucking as XP ?
    Thansk for your time

Your usage description points towards a MacBook so you're in the correct forum. iPhoto (included) does a wonderful job of organizing and working with your photo collection. I'm a little inexperienced with video so perhaps another poster can bring you up to speed for that. The Mac version of ms office can be purchased and used on your MacBook although I use Mac's iWork '08 for my office suite needs because it's much cheaper and works very well.
If you have 2GB of RAM in a MacBook, it will run very well but you have the ability to increase your MacBook to 4GB and it should scream with that amount. This is not to say that you would be locked in to purchasing RAM from Apple so with that in mind, the initial purchase can be user upgraded much cheaper than customizing your order. The same holds true for your hard drive (user upgradable and cheaper). -GDF

  • Need Help Determining Which Sound Chip Is On New Motherboard

I have a Toshiba M45-S331 that had a damaged motherboard, and I couldn't find the exact replacement MB at a reasonable cost, so I substituted a #V000051700 MB. After reassembling the laptop, everything works great except I get no sound. I'm hoping that the issue is that the replacement motherboard has a different sound chip, so a different driver would be required, but I'm having difficulty finding out which chip is integrated in the MB, and therefore which drivers will work. Is there a way to get the appropriate spec's on the motherboard? There were some sub-numbers on the MB - 6050A0067901, if that helps.
After further research, I found out that the new motherboard came out of a Toshiba M45-S3553, which has the same drivers as the original M45-S331, so the problem must be something other than the sound drivers. It may be the sound chip is bad. Any other ideas?

The RAM is pretty minimal in that machine, but it will run OS 9. In my experience eBay is problematic for OS purchases unless you know exactly what you are doing. Never buy "Restore" disks unless it is for your exact machine. (Keep OS X away from your iMac until you determine that it has the 4.1.9 firmware update!)
Apple Rescue, here, is one of the better places to get OS disks. OS 9.2.1 would be my recomendation.
Put a little more RAM in that iMac, and I think you'll find the Mac an enjoyable experience, and ... welcome to the "Apple Orchard" where there are no viruses, no spyware, and no blue screens of death.

  • Help Determining Which Methods/Classes Are Being Used

    Hello,
I'm having issues with my company's Java application and because I've luckily narrowed the classes down to a meager 30+ I need some help pinpointing my problem.
I realize there are a lot of Java monitoring applets/applications and some are deployment-specific but I need something very detailed-- I haven't found the features I need.
    Specs:
    Jrun4, Java 1.4, Windows Server 2003
I would like to have a monitor that tells me exactly (real-time) what classes, methods, variables, etc. are being called in real-time. Looking at the JRun launcher console for one process gives me this:
    Generating report:quadbase.reportdesigner.ReportAPI.QbReport with export type:PDF
01/16 14:05:33 error Software caused connection abort: socket write error
java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: socket write error
            at java.net.SocketOutputStream.socketWrite0(Native Method)
            at java.net.SocketOutputStream.socketWrite(SocketOutputStream.java:92)
            at java.net.SocketOutputStream.write(SocketOutputStream.java:136)
            at jrun.servlet.io.MetricsOutputStream.write(MetricsOutputStream.java:75)
            at java.io.BufferedOutputStream.write(BufferedOutputStream.java:106)
            at jrun.servlet.http.WebOutputStream.write(WebOutputStream.java:64)
            at jrun.servlet.file.FileServlet.pipeData(FileServlet.java:419)
            at jrun.servlet.file.FileServlet.service(FileServlet.java:254)
            at jrun.servlet.ServletInvoker.invoke(ServletInvoker.java:91)
at jrun.servlet.JRunInvokerChain.invokeNext(JRunInvokerChain.java:42)This is cute, but not really helpful. I would like to determine what was passed to the process, from where and what went wrong.
    For example,
    Instead of this:
    Generating report:quadbase.reportdesigner.ReportAPI.QbReport with export type:PDF
01/16 14:05:33 error Software caused connection abort: socket write errorI would get something like this:
    Generating report:quadbase.reportdesigner.ReportAPI.QbReport with export type:PDF
            Page variables: test.jsp ($var1= "I'm"; $var2= "Going"; $var3="To"; $var4="Break"; $var5 = null)
            Calling: test2.jsp
            With: jrun.bin.db.foo.Bar();
01/16 14:05:33 error Software caused connection abort: socket write error
Problem: $var5 = null;Sorry if I'm rambling, I just want to know what is where and who it's calling when it breaks. Then I could deduce which class, what variable, what page, etc. My application is very complicated and seemingly mundane changes can throw it all off.
    Any ideas?

We'll look into usage tracking. We're on the standard edition, so I'm not sure if it's available. Also, some of these reports may be quarterly -- so there may be a long wait to see if the view is used and I need to know fairly soon. (If it's not used, it saves us some work in a project transition going on.)
I certainly don't understand the underlying structure of the product, but it seems like there should be some way to determine if a view is used by a report. I apologize if I'm not using the correct terminology. Thanks for your help -- we'll keep looking into it.

  • Which Apple laptop is most appropriate for university students?

I just purchased a 15.4" MacBook Pro for university, which I am starting for the first time in the fall. After having received it however I have my doubts if I chose the right one - weight and size being some of my biggest concerns, along with battery life. The model I have has a 2.53 GHz i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 500 GB ATA drive @ 7200 rpm and a hi-res antiglare display. I believe going down to the 13" would also mean going to a lower resolution, glossy display which I have concerns about.
I will be majoring in English, taking for the most part humanities and arts classes, so my computer needs for school would be mostly word processing and presentations - I will be purchasing either iWork or Office to use. I will watch movies and TV shows from time to time, but I don't think the smaller screen size would bother me as I watch them all the time on my iPod touch. I have a fairly extensive music collection and have photos and home videos as well.
As well, after my four-year English degree I will be getting a Masters degree in book publishing, which will require becoming familiar with Adobe Creative Suite 5. I won't be working with these programs in the next four years, but after that my computer will need to be able to handle working with the Suite.
I would be extremely grateful for any opinions - switch to the less powerful but more portable 13", or stick with the 15"?

I appreciate your dilemma. I recently bought a new 15" MBP to replace an older one. While making decisions, I wondered about the smaller screen (size/weight) but stuck with the 15" as it is easier to work with.
You can add to any of the notebooks with an extra monitor (not too dear these days) for graphics work when needed; and as you have arts courses the screen area may help with better appreciation of any works you view.
As regards presentations, the medium of the presentation display is a large screen, but the resolution and size are limited by the projector (using Displays Preferences you can play with this for the best display). Colours also are changed by these devices, so it would be worth taking time to calibrate.
The main reason I would suggest that you make no change for now is that you already have this computer in your hands. Switching now would need data transfers and a (relatively small) learning curve. The machine specs are a bit above what most university students have or need in my opinion, but changing now would cost you (unless you can get a good deal) and there is the data question (above). The power requirements of the Adobe product also suggest the current machine is a better bet (although in 4 years time I would be thinking of a change anyway). Stay with the 15"

  • Which Apple device to buy?

I developer software as a profession e.g. Android Apps and need processing power and speed.
I really need PORTABILITY. I need high GB or terabyte storage space. I do usual web surfing and a lot of voice and video web conferencing.
That's it. Nothing special but I just cannot decide which mac to buy and can configured it to my specification in the most cost optimal way. I want one device with power and portability.
MacBook Air? MacBook Pro (probably not this one)? Mac mini? Mac Pro (could be too bulky for my liking) ? Or an iPad2?
Any advice, suggestions, comments and ideas will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

If you need portability you want a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. A Mac mini is not portable and an iPad2 while a great device isn't what I consider ideal for software development. If you need a lot of storage you best bet would be a MacBook Pro, then you just have decide what size screen you want. Finding 1TB 2.5" drives is a little tough, you won't be able buy the machine with a 1TB drive pre-installed you will have to upgrade which is pretty easy on a MacBook Pro. You can find one (a Samsung) from OWC at www.macsales.com.
Also this is an iMac forum, posting here for a portable device doesn't make too much sense. I'd recommend the MBP or MBA forums.

  • Help! which Audio Interface to buy?

    Hi,
I have just got garageband and have fiddled with it for a few months now so Im comfortable with it. I now wnat to connect my Condenser Mic (RODE NT1-A) which will need phantom power and my electric guitar . Everything else will be recorded with the inbuilt soft synths on GB. I know nothing of audio interfaces and am only familar with M Audio Fast track as a brand.
I want to spend no more than £100 ( or less on ebay second hand) but Im confused by the vast choice. I was tempted by the cheaper M audio fast track with 1 xlr input and 1 for guitar. Does any one use one and if so will it be powerful enough for my condenser mic with phantom power ?
    Cheers
    Paul

I use a Presonus FireStudio Mobile with my Rode Mic's. http://www.presonus.com/products/FireStudio-Mobile I use an NT5 and NT2000. Both work great with the unit.. Its FireWire though which you may not have on your machine. I have used an early M-Audio Fast Track and would not recomend it to others. Cheers

  • Help Determining which songs I lost (!)

In moving my iTunes db to a home media system, I had to create folders on my laptop and then copy to the systems hard disk. Unfortunately, I think I changed the directory on some (not all) of the songs as I get an error message from iTunes saying it couldn't locate the song any longer.
Once I see that message - the ! symbol appears next to the song. Problem I have is unless I don't know how to get the ! symbol to appear next to all the songs I'll need to re-load, either from the CD or home system.
Is there some function that displays all songs that no longer exist??

thx. in a roundabout sort of way....it worked. once i selected all to move them, all the dead files got highlighted.
however - now that I'm going thru the list - something else must have gone wrong. I'm up to about 50 albums (full albums) gone and I'm only up to F's!!
Honestly - I really dont know if transferring the songs to my home system was the problem. Once I transferred them - I rarely used iTunes any longer. I ended up deleting the songs from the folders as I was running out to disk space and thought they were duplicates to my iTunes database. But I also updated my iTunes version. Is there a chance the reason these were deleted was due to the upgrade?

  • Trying to determine which account can open my books.

I've been using DE with four Overdrive Libraries for a few months now and it's worked well. Some of these libraries also have 3m and Axis 360. At some point, I think I addiitionally authorized DE to use 3M. Last night I used a new vendor that required me to erase previous authroization of DE and re-authorize using their service in order to read one book. I read the book and then re-authorized with my Adobe ID. Now my issue is that none of the books that I have on loan from my libraries are available for me to read or return. I downloaded two new books from a library last night under the authorized Adobe ID and after erasing and reauthorizing DE with that Adobe ID, niether of those books can be opened, nor can any of the other, borrowed previous to authorization library books, be opened. Setting aside the issue of these two new books that can't be opened with the Adobe ID I knew they were borrowed/downloaded with, how can I determine the nature (Vendor and ID) of whatever my other current borrowed books are? And now that these two books aren't working under a known ID, how can I determine whether or not the same issue isn't affecting all of the other books I've borrowed from Overdrive that may have been borrowed under the same ID? SO basically, I'm asking for help determining which books were borrowed under which ID and once that's established, whether or not that is in fact the issue that's keeping them from being accessible.
Note: I do have a granular back up, and if there is a need to restore system or preference files to what they were yesterday, I'd just need to know what those files are in order to get back to a working DE library. I'm working with an iMac running Mavericks, DE 2.0.

    Hello Shannon
    it should be eth1 port.

Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare  the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

  • HT1206 I buy apps in my iPhone using different Apple IDs. Which Apple ID should I use to authorize the computer when synchronizing iPhone with iTunes?

I buy apps in my iPhone using different Apple ID. Which Apple ID should I use to authorize the computer when sync iPhone with iTunes?

    Hi again,
After a little further research, it appears that you would need to create separate iTunes libraries in order to be able to continue to purchase and download previously purchased items on the same computer, for two different Apple IDs. Sorry - but my husband and I have had the library we sync with authorized for so long, that we have not run into this issue, but it appears that you will get an warning when you try to authorize the second ID on the same computer, indicating that another ID is already associated with it.
So, you will probably have to set up separate iTunes libraries for each ID:

Sorry for any confusion - hope this helps!

Hi i dont know why i couldnt able to purchase any apps from apple store or in itunes store using my debit card with which i used to buy before ?

I don't know why but I suspect you are located in the Indian sub continent.   Debit cards appear to be a problem here and while many are accepted in other countries, India seems to be an exception.   Go to ...
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us   ... and ask for help.

  • Help me which macbook to buy

    Help me please
I want to buy a macbook pro  i am from india and i am a student.
I can spend money maximum for entry level 15 inch macbook pro non retina with 512mb graphic .
I  want to play games like ea sports games, batman arkham city, gta games etc. can the entry level run these games.will bootcamping run all these games with the dedicated graphic card present in it.
    Now,
I can wait for 2-3 months ,so should i wait for haswell macbook pro non retina. Will there be any significant improvement in graphics or perfomance beside battery improvement.
Apple just introduced back to college scheme in our country and giving a good discount.
So,please help me should i wait or should i go for the present macbook pro.
    Thank you.

If you want games, going for the 15" Pro is better than 13" or Air.    Retina offers higher built-in resolution, and less weight, but less expansion options.    So you have to weigh which is more important.  I would look at each game you want and make sure the GPU that is on the Mac is stated in the specs.  If it is not, there is no guarantee you'll even be able to play the game, let alone see it at any reasonable speed.
