Help diagnosing a possibly compromised iBook

This is a repost of a previous question, with (I believe) all domains and e-mail addresses replaced.
I recently received a message from the network manager at my workplace telling me that he'd logged a number of warning about spam related to my IP address. I'm concerned that my Mac may be compromised, and am hoping that someone can help me figure out what is going on and just how bad this is.
Rather than try to list all the things I've gone through in trying to diagnose the problem, I'm basically just going to put some snippets of the log files he e-mailed me, and then hopefully someone can guide me along in the diagnosis process.
This is from what seems to be a postfix log (my username is the username for company e-mail, companymailserver is the name of the mail server, and my.ip.address appears to be an IP address assigned to me while using my home ADSL connection). I live in Morocco, which explains the .ma extension.

I installed Little Snitch to try to monitor any outgoing connections; I haven't noticed over port 25, but noticed a bunch of traceroute requests to IP addresses I don't recognize. I block the requests, as I can't figure out what application might be requesting the traceroutes, but I don't know if that was actually related. It's also possible that whatever is sending the spam is either a) coming from an application that Little Snitch approves of, like Mail, or b) somehow this is not actually my computer causing the problem (please please please).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated; I thought that I was fairly security conscious, and this worries me.
Thanks in advance,
Greg Westin

I don't think it's a problem to post this. Is there some reason I should be concerned, other than letting people know that I do in fact have Microsoft products installed? At any rate, here it is, with my computer's name and my username replaced:

That type of panic seems to be caused in some cases by starting up an older Mac from a third-party SSD. Check the SSD manufacturer's website for a firmware update.
It can also be caused by faulty or incompatible memory, or sometimes (perhaps) by a malfunctioning peripheral.
The panic is not caused by software.

  • I need help diagnosing why my Macbook pro is crashing my internet?

Hi, I need help diagnosing a problem with my macbook pro early 2011.  For the past two weeks all of a sudden my internet was crashing and really slow. Finally I was getting so fed up I called my internet provider and we ruled out that it isnt the cable modem or router.  When I turned my macbook off everything was working fine and all my tablets and apple TV was streaming fine with the speeds I pay for.  I've already went to the genius bar and they did a clean install of maverick.  After the clean install the internet worked for one day and the next day when I got home at night it stopped working. Went to the genius bar once more and took my router and the problem was encountering the same at the store we reseted the router and everything worked fine again.  When I got home I reseted the router setup up with new ssisd and same problem internet crashing. Finally I decided to make another account and the internet was working fine again. Before going to my second trip to the genius bar I made a second account which was working good with good internet speeds, but I still decided to go in cause I don't want to have to have multiple accounts since I'm the only user.  Right now the only way the internet isn't crashing is using another account rather than the administer account. Please help cause I've already went to the apple store twice and feel like I'm at the end of the road and never going to fix the problem

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Help Diagnosing a Kernal Panic

    Hi All,
Was hoping for some help diagnosing a kernal panic as it is slightly above my pay grade.
Some background, this 3,1 Mac Pro has been having repeated kernal panics for some time - it would start up, hang, and restart itself, sometimes 3 or 4 times before eventually being OK.
We had USB3 and ESATA cards installed, which we've tested and removed to try to rule them out - even with them uninstalled, the issue remains.
I was hopeful someone could translate this kernal panic and let me know what the issue is?

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to the problem:
    Sentinel HASP License Manager
    Blackmagic driver
    InstantOn
If the panic is recurrent, check that all are up to date, and if they are, uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Restart the computer and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes.

    Hello,
In order to check if the Reports executed is the one you have modified, I suggest to copy the Reports in a specific directory (/tmp on UNIX , c:\temp on Window) and execute the Reports providing the "full path name " :
    report=/tmp/myreport.rdf
If you can see the modifications you have done when executing the reports like this, check if there is a REP with the same name , check if the Reports you have modified is the first with this name in the REPORTS_PATH

  • IBook Possible Hard Drive Corruption -  Please help diagnose

I left my iBook to download overnight and when I got up, it was really slow and laggy so I restarted it but it continually kept getting frozen at the last login screen, so I backed up my data via firewire, and erased the hard drive, and then installed OSX again. It worked for a bit, but then it crashed again, and between all these steps I have been repairing the hard drive using disk utility. It says that there is nothing wrong with the hard drive, but then it changes its mind after I've installed OSX again and it says there's a problem. Currently, the hard drive is blank, but it is coming up with a problem when I try and repair disk. The error that shows up is: "The underlying task reported failure on exist." as well as "Catalog file entry not found for extent."
I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself. I suspect that it is some form of hard drive failure. I don't want to take it in the shop because that will cost about $40 just to get it checked out, and I plan on installing a new hard drive myself if I find that that is the necessary step. If anyone has had similar problems, or knows what part needs to be replaced, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
PS. If someone has some time and has more experience in diagnostics, please feel free to message me on msn at roycelee@hotmail dot com

This is the best way to Erase and Install. First backup all your important stuff, if you can, as the following will erase everything on your drive; it will be unrecoverable. Put your install disk in your Mac and Restart while holding down the C key. In Tiger, When you get to the install screen, don't click install and go to the title bar at the top of the screen and click on Utilities (in earlier OS's click on the installer menu).
Click on Disk Utility and choose the hard drive you want your OS on. Then click on the Erase tab. In Tiger, click on the Security Options button near the bottom (it's similiar for Panther and Jaguar).
Once in there choose Zero Out Data (write zero's in earlier versions). This will map out any bad blocks on your drive and bring it back to almost new condition (providing there's nothing wrong mechanically with it, bad bearings, defective or damaged surface, etc.).
Once this is done, go back to the install screen and begin the "Erase and Install" installation. This will put a factory fresh system on a clean hard drive.
    Cheers!

  • Problem with iBook powering on... Need help diagnosing please

    Hello,
So for awhile my iBook G3 (dual USB, 700 mhz, 12" display) when the power is pressed the computer chimes and the hard drive will start spinning and then nothing happens. After a few seconds I can hear the drive stop spinning and the only sign of power is that the keyboard will light at the caps lock key.
I tried doing a PMU/PRAM reset and the iBook did a long beep noise, then the hardrive started spinning, then power light started flickering, and than it chimed and that's it.
Not sure what to do with it. I love this computer, and all though it's older and well out of date, it's ultra compact and worked great for wireless internet surfing when away from home. I'd appreciate any help to help figure out what this problem is and if it's worth paying to get it fixed or to replace it.
    Thanks for reading,
    Matt

First, check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up to see if something there helps.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar and it is not past the three-year time limit, give Apple a call.
You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box at the bottom of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."
If it is past the three-year time limit (and it probably is), you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
If you can't manage to get it fixed free or on your own with the shim fix, I almost think it's a better idea to put the money you would spend on a repair toward a new MacBook. They are such a spectacular upgrade over the iBook G3. Hard drive specs, USB 2.0, RAM, processor, Tiger, the newest version of iLife, built-in AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth capabilities, and built-in iSight camera. If you can afford it, that may be the way to go. With a new MacBook, you have the option of using Migration Assistant to transfer your data to the new computer, but that likely won't work if you can't get the iBook to start up at all. However, with a new Mac, you may be able to retrieve some of your data using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • Help in Planning Network: G5/iBook G4/Airport Extreme & Express?

    Hi  Folks,
I could use some help setting up a WiFI network to accomplish three goals (see below).
    Hardware and Software:
    Computers
-Dual Core 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 Desktop Computer (note: NO internal airport WiFi card), OS 10.4.11
-iBook G4 with internal Airport Card (currently with dead HD, awaiting a replacement HD any day). Can't remember is this has an early version of OS10.4 or 10.3.
    Airport
    -Airport Express 802.11n (MB321LL/A,  model #A1264)
-Airport Extreme base station model #A1034 (older unit with 2003 date)
-Airport Card internal card in the iBook G4
Airport Software loaded on my G5:
    -Airport Admin Utility v5.4.2
    -Airport Disk Utility v1.5.3
** I do NOT have Airport Setup Assistant software on the G5, nor can I locate it on the OS install disks that came with the G5.
    Network Goals:
Previously, I've setup a simple WiFi network in my apartment by using only the Airport Express: I connected the DSL modem to the Airport Express and transmitted the WiFI internet signal to the iBook. I haven't had that setup for quite some time; recently I was given the Airport Extreme and I'd like to finally get a network up and running.
I have a roommate that wants internet access so I'd like to setup a WiFi network to accomplish as many of the following three goals as possible:
    1) Wifi internet capability.
1a) G5 wired connection to DSL modem/Airport Express as my primary internet connection and for fastest speeds (again, no WiFI card in the G5).
1b) Transmit WiFi internet signal so my roommate can share internet access, but for security purposes limit my roommate from accessing any data/files on my computer(s).
1c) WiFi internet access for my own G4 iBook.
    2) WiFi file sharing network
2a) Wireless network so that my G4 iBook can access data/files from my G5 (private network roommate excluded).
    3) Stream iTunes.
I have my iTunes library on an external HD, currently connected to my G5. I'd like to broadcast iTunes music to another room. Can the Airport Extreme stream iTunes from my G5 (the latter with no internal Airport Card) to another room where the Airport Express is connected to another stereo receiver/speakers? If yes, can I use my G4 laptop as an iTunes remote control to make music selections?
Question: Can all (or most?) of these goals be accomplished with the hardware/software on hand?
    .... so....
Currently, I plugged in the Airport Extreme connected with an ethernet cable to the G5 (using the  connection with the  <- ->  symbol on the Airport Extreme). The G5 doesn't identify the  Airport Extreme, which makes me think I need the AIrport Setup Assistant Software?
In any case, I'm lost as to how to configure this setup to accomplish my goals. I've owned Apple since 1994 but haven't delved far into setting up networks.
Any guidance and help would be tremendously appreciated!
    Thanks a bunch,
    Lovegasoline

    Bump.
Can anyone offer some basic guidance?
Do I need Airport Setup Assistant software to configure this network?
    Thanks.

  • Help diagnosing kernel panic?

My MacMini (mid 2011) 2.5GHz Core i5 w 16GB or RAM running of a 240GB SSD has never givenme a moments problem. Yesterday it started frequent kernel panics. Diagnosing them is over my head. Here are excerpts from the header of the console log for all the panics. There are only subtle differences between them, different CPU, but the "offending file" is the same every time. Can anyone tell me where the problem lies? Thanks, Mark

The Time Machine backup data on the network device is corrupt. The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.
After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced.

  • Please help diagnose kernel panics

I'm having intermittent kernel panics on an Intel iMac (10.4.8). When they happen, it is always after a hotsync to a Palm Treo 680. I have never installed the Palm software, only MissingSync from MarkSpace. The sync looks like it's succeeded. MissingSync says it was fine, and the Treo has gone back to its normal hotsync screen. But just as that happens the panic occurs (sometimes). My guess is that it's when the Treo disconnects from the USB port. It's connected directly to a port on the back of the iMac. MarkSpace support had nothing obvious to suggest, other than uninstall, reset PRAM, repair disk, reinstall blah, blah. Can't see how this would help.
Anyone know if the Treo needs a USB driver as such, that would presumably be supplied by Macos or MissingSync? The panic report follows. Any pointers gratefully accepted!

All modern USB devices rely upon standard device drivers included with the operating system. OS X has built-in USB device drivers. However, not all USB devices are necessarily compliant.
As for the Treo I have no specific information on any incompatibilities with OS X when used with the proper software. If you use Missing Sync from MarkSpace just be sure you are using the most current version and that you don't also have Palm Desktop software installed as well. There is nothing specific in the panic.log file that points to The Missing Sync software directly, only that the panic was generated in one or more of the USB extensions.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics for more information.
I use Missing Sync with a Palm Tungsten E and it works fine on all my machines.
Do you use any other USB devices and/or USB hubs?
There are many possible causes of kernel panics. Corrupted device drivers and hardware defects are common causes. As I suggested before you would be wise to follow the suggestions given you by MarkSpace support.

  • One upgrade possible for Ibook and Imac?

    Hi there,
lots of great info on the site and very helpful just with what I've found.
Could not find anything that tells me what version of OSX I could possibly upgrade to that would help both my machines.
I need to upgrade to 10.5 for blackberry app to work. Not sure if I can find and use a version of 10.5 that will allow me to updgrade both my 10.3.x Ibook G3 AND my Imac (Intel) running 10.4.11. I do realize that Ibook will not be able to run Leopard.
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
In addition, I've been using an internet stick (no DSL in the area) as my connection on my Imac but relegated the Ibook to backup duty for wordprocessing since I can't connect the stick to it. I've tried to set up a network that would allow me to have the Ibook share the Imac connection, but to no avail. If anyone has experience with doing this, that would help also.
    Thanks,

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The combined update for Mac OS X 10.3 (to 10.3.9) for the iBook can be found at this link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/panther/
Explanation: Although the iBook G3 (Dual USB) is technically capable of running Mac OS X 10.4, some people (myself included) believe that Mac OS X 10.3.9 is the optimal version of the OS to run on the iBook. My reasoning on the matter is due to the limited logic board RAM on the iBook G3 (Dual USB). Panther (10.3) is able to run on the logic board RAM in most iBooks G3 (Dual USB) (128 MB on the vast majority of them), while Tiger (10.4) requires 256 MB of RAM to run. So if you should ever have a RAM problem while running Tiger, you can't test whether that is the problem by removing the extra RAM module.
If you mean you'd like a single upgrade path for both computers, I'm afraid that's not possible.
Are you running a wireless connection for the internet? Is the iBook equipped with an original AirPort Card? I'm not certain what an "internet stick" is, exactly? With no DSL in your area, are you on dial-up, then?

  • Help diagnosing spinning ball / crashes

Hi - looking for help to diagnose a problem with my iMac G5 2.0 GHz 17" (MacOs 10.4.11).
Symptoms are that after a few hours running, the spinning ball appears more & more often till eventually locks up, often with the fan(s) going into overdrive at the same time. Sometimes prior to the lock up the hard drive starts clicking. Once it hits this point the only way to recover is to force power down & restart. Often have to leave the machine alone for a few hours before it will restart successfully.
My suspicion is that it may be the hard drive over-heating or possibly about to fail. I've checked the SMART diagnostics via Disk Utility and Disk Warrior and they both say everything's fine, except once on Disk Warrior when SMART check came back with: "The hard drive's built-in temperature sensor indicates an above normal temperature of 150.8 F (66 C), this might indicate a failure or pending failure that could result in loss of data". I checked again immediately after and it reverted to OK again.
Btw, I had a logic board failure some 2-3 years back. This was replaced by Apple under the extended warranty. I've checked the caps now - they are all pristine. I've also cleaned out all the dust to give the fans the best chance to work.
I've used Hardware Monitor (http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonit...) to log the temps. This reports three temp sensors: CPU, "Hard Drive" and "SMART Disk Maxtor 7Y250M0 (Y668LJSE)". The last two seem to track each other with "Hard Drive" generally 7-9 degrees lower than "SMART Disk", so I guess one may be a sensor outside the drive and the other on the inside.
Immediately prior to the last failure, the "SMART Disk" sensor had hit 68 degrees C, which was a max since it had been started (although it had hit this temp a couple of times before without locking up). It locked up for 5 mins and when I restarted the iMac, the reading was 73 degrees C.
I've tried adjusting the AppleFan.kext to kick the fans in earlier to keep everything cool (as per http://bitsandpieces.info/MDDFanExtensio...) - going for a 10 degree reduction to default - but it's not obvious that this is doing anything.
So - can anyone give me advice on diagnosis / next steps. Does this sound like a fan problem, a hard disk problem, or something else? And how do I remedy it - should I replace one / all of the fans, replace the hard drive, find some utility to get the fans to run faster (haven't located one yet apart from the kext mod which does not appear to work), or ...?
Any suggestions / advice very welcome.
    R.

    Hi R
    ...the hard drive starts clicking...
    Needs replacing.
66/73C is toooo high though, check that the hd temp sensor is attached correctly. Some models it can usefully be placed on the drive body, rather than the mounting bracket, avoiding that difference in temps. My 20" used to run the hd sensor at about 55 I think, leading to higher actual drive temps until the sensor was glued in a different spot.
Fans/blades can get pretty crusty inside too, so check that if you haven't already.

  • Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related

    Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
    thought it might be RAM.
    ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
    thank you.
