Help diagnosing colour management problem - windows 7, CS3, Eye-one display 2

Hi,
I had my colour management all set up and working on my old laptop then I foolishly got a new laptop and am completely failing to get things straight.
The new laptop (Asus N56VM with Nvidia GT 630M) is running Windows 7.. I've calibrated the screen using my Pantone (X-Rite) eye-one display-two and straight away it looks much better to the eye. I calibrate to native white point which I always do with laptops.
I've used the following procedure to make Windows 7 load the profile at startup and removed the GretagMacbeth tool which attempts to do the same:

Everything looks great except when I attempt to use anything with colour management.
Eg. All my old photos looked great in Adobe Bridge until I activated Color Management via it's settings and suddenly they look awful - sky blues turn turquoise.
If I open an sRGB tagged file in photoshop it looks the same - awful (using Preserve Embedded Profile and with a working space of Adobe 1998 in Color Settings)
Only way I can get images to look normal in Photoshop is to open them then ASSIGN the monitor profile to the image (I know this makes no sense to do and is in no way a workaround)... and it looks great.
Something's not right somewhere but not sure where to start looking since there are so many variables. Can anyone suggest a route to investigate based on what I've said so far? This is driving me nuts!

Ok, I use the same tool and software to calibrate my monitor. I disagree with Lazlo p about resetting Color Management. What you should have is under Devices>Display, click "Use my settings for this device". (You will have to go to the place you checked Windows display calibration and uncheck it first.)
When I first started using Win 7, I did not have either checked, (I didn't know about Windows Display Cal) and had fits. Then I checked "Use my settings..." and it ran fine.
The reason the Gregg MacBeth Calibration Loader tool is needed has to do with their reluctance in updating the software completely to run in 64 bit. The Calibration Loader has always been a part of their software and for at least, XP, has run seamlessly. I now have the icon for Cal Loader in my tray, and after reboot, I'll click it to be sure the profile has loaded. Most of the time it has.
I verified it with the support group who verified the need to use that tool in 64 bit. The workaround? An entirely new software package at a considerable sum!
So I did what Lazlo suggested, and when I had completed the changes, I clicked the cal loader icon in the Tray.
The display changed!
I trust the Cal Loader.
I do not grasp what MS implies in their discussion of WCS vs ICC, especially with respect that WCS is better.
Finally, I am doubtful that you should be using native white point. It's not simply a choice available to laptops, but to all LCD screens (AFAIK!). There is a huge difference between 6500K and native white point on the Dell u2412,so much so I dismissed it out of hand and tweak the colors in RGB during calibration. Your laptop may not offer that path.

Colour Management Issue with PS CS3 and Leopard 10.5.2

Hi Everyone,
Since I have installed Leopard I am having colour management issues with Photoshop CS3 and my Canon i9950 printer.
My screen is calibrated with a Spyder and I used to ask Photoshop (in 10.4.11) to manage colour when printing and used the Spyder profile. Everything came out as I saw it on screen.
Now in leopard when I do the same thing everything comes out too yellow on the print. If I ask Photoshop to let the printer manage the colour it is too red. If I use the default colour management (photoshop managing the colour and it choosing the colour space it is better, but still too yellow).
Photoshop gives the hint to turn off colour management in the printer but there is no option for this and it also said the same thing before of course (when it worked in 10.4.11).
Any ideas?

You were lucky.
the monitor profile is so Photoshop can display your images correctly.
the working space is Adobe RGB, sRGB, BruceRGB, ect... these are all known color spaces so when the file goes to another computer there is a consistent color space for reference. If you use your monitor profile as a working space then nobody else knows what is going on with your file.
when you print you need to use the printer profile for the type of paper you are printing on this is supplied by the printer manufacturer. you can also have custom profiles made.

Photoshop 7 Colour Management Problem (WinXP)

Hi,
I just a problem studio while swapping over 2 Windows XP machines, having swapped over the 1st PC Photoshop 7 lost it's colour management settings.
All images viewed now appeared hazey to the user. So we swapped the PCs back to the original monitor however the colour settings we are prompted for
when opening Photoshop 7 have now been lost..
We tried alll the colour management templates listed but these are not right.
Is there away we can restore the original settings? Could these settings be saved in a file somewhere on the PCs hard disk?

The color settings should be in C:\Documents and Settings\Anita\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop 7\ somewhere or they are in Photoshop's program directory under a Presets\Color folder

Colour Management problems - media AE to Encoder

I have noticed that Adobe Media Encoder Doesn't seem to cater for colour management. Or make mention of how applies gamma adjustments to the content it encodes. Flash in particular.
1. I'm working in colour managed environment in AE (eg. Adobe 1998),
2. I export my final master animation with an associated Output profile suitable for the media - like sRGB (web & Flash), or Rec 709 for HD TV.
3. So, If I use Media encoder to export Flash FLV, the final output is grossly over-saturated, because (I think) MEcoder has applied a second 2.2 gamma curve to the file.
That would be ok, if a little annoying - but worse still, if I use Media Encoder to create a mpeg DVD encode - it does respect the colour intergrity of the Master AE render.
Anyone else notice this?
So it appears that if you use colour managed workflow - rendering a master out of AE with you working profile attached to it is necessary, because ME is going to gamma correct it to sRGB it when it encodes - like it or not!

Can you give me more info about step 2? I would like to repro exactly what you are seeing here at Adobe. How are you exporting your final animation? What format, codec, etc... Also small sample projects with single frames etc would be very useful.

Colour Management Problem - Please Help!

I am using Photoshop CS3
I have edited a portrait image in Camera Raw.
From Bridge I have used Tools -> Photoshop -> Web Photo Gallery
I have taken one of the resulting JPEGS out and it displays absolutely fine in Microsoft applications, and skin tones are perfect.
I have opened the same edited image in Photoshop to do some minor localised editing.
I then saved it as a JPEG
It is now extremely red when viewed in Microsoft applications.
From Bridge I have used Tools -> Photoshop -> Image Processor
I then converted it to a JPEG
It is now again extremely red when viewed in Microsoft applications.
Please can anyone explain why the JPEG created from the Web Photo Gallery is absolutely fine, but when created through Photoshop of the image processor the image is extremely red and not usable. Any ideas will be greatly and gratefully appreciated.

Adobe Bridge colour management problems

It appears that jpeg images, converted from Neffs, are not being displayed correctly in Bridge, V2.1.1.9. They display overexposed and open from Bridge into Photoshop CS3 overexposed (faithfully overexposed to Adobe Bridge's representation) and yet shift clicking, or opening in Photoshop CS3 directly from the file the images display correctly. I have tried purging the cache for one of the offending folders but this has not resolved the issue.
I have also Optioned clicked, on launch, and cleared all prefs - this rectifies the problem but once Adobe Bridge is relaunched the files initially preview correctly but then Bridge decides to amend (I can see this happening) and display overexposed thumbnails once again.
It appears that all Canon jpegs saved from RAW (.CR2) files are okay. All Nikon NEFF files display correctly, as do Tiffs saved from the NEFFS, the error appears to be restricted to jpeg images saved from NEF files.
I am using Leopard MacPro 2.8 quad - all Adobe and Apple software up to date, freshly installed and monitor calibrated - correct monitor profile being used, not hosed, as CS3 is good. I am not running the CS3 suite just Bridge, ACR and CS3.
I didn't suffer from this problem on my previous PowerMac G5 (it recently died hence new MacPro), with the same images, using Tiger, Adobe Bridge and CS3 - could this be one of Leopard's many teething problems?
I have some low res screen grabs to demonstrate the problem but I am not sure if, and how, I can upload them to this forum?

PROBLEM SOLVED, sort of any way.
I figured out my problem and it really has nothing to do with Bridge.
Basically my D300 along with other digital cameras is adding additional information into the RAW format that Bridge and other programs like Apeture and Lightroom ignore. Stuff like D-Lighting, Color settings and other information that can make the picture look a specific way is simply dropped at import when opening in bridge because those certain settings are specific to Nikons RAW NEF files. Canon does the same thing on their RAW files as well.
The reason people see the graphics change is because Bridge and other programs usually use the camera's JPG preview with all tweaks to first pull up the thumbnail image in Bridge. When the user clicks on a thumbnail to view the RAW file info or import it into Photoshop, Bridge interprets the RAW info as it can and opens the file. The extra information that helps the photos look a specific way are simply dropped because Bridge does not know how to apply that information.
So unfortunately for now, I guess I am stuck with Capture NX from Nikon if I really want to see the image as it was taken originally without having to do extra work inside of ACR. And before anyone says it, I know you can build profiles that will import the RAW files the same way every time, but so far I have not been able to tweak the settings where the images look exactly the same to this point. It also looks like Nikons software does a much better job of importing the RAWs with less color noise. Too bad their program is slow and completely crappy to use. Kinda sucks, but I guess that is the name of the game right now.

Please help diagnose iPod shuffle problem

Have a 1 GB iPod shuffle that is connected to an iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 MB of RAM and running OS 10.3.9. I am having a problem that seems to be a common one. The iPod Shuffle simply won't mount. It doesn't show up on the desktop, doesn't run iTunes, doesn't show up in iTunes, and the iPod Software Updater keeps saying, "insert an iPod to update it", so it would appear the entire computer doesn't recognize it.
However, the iPod itself isn't bad, because when I plug it into a 12" PowerBook G4, it works fine. I have also managed to get the iPod Shuffle to work with the iMac under only one circumstance. If a wired keyboard is plugged in and the iPod Shuffle is plugges into one of the keyboard's USB ports, it works fine.
I have tried the following:
1. Complete update of every piece of software, including iTunes.
2. Permissions repair, then restart.
3. Unplugging all USB devices and plugging the shuffle into all three ports, one by one.
As I mentioned before, iPod Software Updater doesn't recognize the iPod. However, when I got a 12" PowerBook to recognize it, I ran the updater there, and it said the current firmware was up to date.
What else can I try?

How about a few questions right back at ya!
Does it work every time when you plug it into the wired keyboard or did that just happen once? Since you mentioned a "wired" keyboard can I assume you would rather use a wireless one?
Since the keyboard worked fine but plugging the Shuffle directly into the 3 USB ports does not, my guess would be that the design of the Shuffle or USB ports make it hard to seat the device completely - you said the light was on but no mount happens, this might mean that it's not seated completely. I don't own a Shuffle and I would guess Apple would not design the ports badly but this is my guess if the keyboard, which plugs into the very same USB ports, makes the Shuffle mount.

I have a JScrollPane and want to add several JPanels to it. These Panels should have to same width, but different height. So I used a GridBagLayout and it works good.

Help with Colour Management

Hi I'm a first year Graphic Design student and have agreed to design a logo for a friends business as a freebie in order to get some experience. However I have just 24 hours to get it to him and I am starting to panic about file formats and colour as I have a very limited knowledge about both !
I have designed a simple logo in Illustrator and I am going to use just one or maybe two colours. The logo will be used for print as well as web. I have been advised to use a Pantone Solid Coated Spot colour to make life easy when using litho printing for large runs.
Am I right in assuming that I should do the following:
1. Pick the Panatone Solid Coated colour/s that I want to use whilst in Illustrator
2. Make sure the document is set up as CMYK
3. Save the file as .EPS and place it in Indesign
4. Export and package the document
5. Save a Hi-res Jpeg for use in Print in CMYK
6. Save a Hi-res Jpeg for use on the Web in RGB
7. Save a GIFF/PNG for use on non-white backgrounds on screen

1. For doing logos and such the Logo should be created as Vector in Illustrator. Again, pantone colours should be used after being picked from a book.
If the document is going to be CMYK then you need to convert the spots to CMYK on export, or change the spot colour to CMYK before exporting. If it's the case the logo will be printed full colour you'd be better of getting a colour value from a Pantone Solid to Coated book, which would give the CMYK breakdown for the Pantone colour you need, you can then create a new CMYK using these values and name it according to the name in the book.
I don't know why you'd convert the file to grayscale? You only do this if you want to place the image into indesign and have indesign colour the whole job with a spot colour, but this only works on raster images, not Vector images. So what you read/or understood from what you read is false to a degree.
2. If you're desiging in Illustrator for a logo you're doing it right. Using spot colours and etc. is the right way to go.
You don't need to import the file to InDesign, this is where you'd layout a magazine, business card, or anything that needs laying out. InDesign is the Layout Application, you can do anything from b/cards, to comp slips, to posters, to brochures to booklets to books that are 1000's of pages long.
So no, you don't need to import the Logo to Indesign, you can just supply a .ai file to whomever needs it.
You only need to Package and Export if you're archiving your work, in this case if you imported the logo to InDesign and the choose Package, you'd get a folder with your indesign file and links folder with the placed graphic from Illustrator. Which isn't much use.
Package only really is necessary if you've laid out a piece for printing, like b/cards, comp slips and all the other things I mentioned.
You just need to design the logo in illustrator then save it as .ai with PDF compatibility. The PDF compatibility will embed the fonts used in the logo for printing purposes.

Problems with DW:CS3 and CSS Display

Hi...DW:CS3 is not rendering pages that work under DW8 and
Firefox and IE6. The best example I can show you is from Chapter 13
of CSS: The Missing Manual by McFarland. The full tutorial files

unzip them and then look at the chapter_13_finished html file.
The content and news divisions are pushed down after the
navigation. Does anyone know if this is bad code or a problem w/th
the CS3 engine. It works fine under DW8.

Yes...the pages from the book display perfectly in dw8, but
not in DWcs3.
I found that by commenting out the "clear:left;" under "#nav"
the page displays properly in DWcs3, too. That leaves open the
question of "why".

Help with a weird problem: MB Air, Internet, and Cinema Display

I have the first MacBook Air, running the latest Leopard release.
I use an Airport Extreme with Verizon FIOS.
I have no problems connecting with the Internet (knock on wood) on the Air. However, when I use a 23-inch Cinema Display (not the most recent CD) with the Air my Internet connection slows to a crawl, or I can't connect at all. I unplug the CD from the Air, and I can connect to the Internet again quickly.
Any idea what the problem is?
The Air works well with the CD. The only problem is when I use the Air connected to the CD and access the Web.

The Air is plugged in, and all appears to be OK with the Air's power. Same with the Cinema Display. The Air appears to have the power to render properly on the Cinema Display but not enough juice left to engage its built-in wi-fi to access the web? I am at a complete loss on this one. Will be calling Apple support or stopping by the Genius Bar, as I have one other item (different computer) I must deal with.

Please help with very strange problem,Am I the only one......

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Q6600, 6 gigs of ram 3 Tbytes HD space and a 8600GT 512 video card. CS5 runs great until I add a configurator 2 panel, then strange things happen. When I select a tool using a keyboard shortcut, is changes very slowly and then reverts back to the original tool. Switching between layers in the layers panel is very slow. None of this happens untill I open a custom CF2 panel. I used custom configurator panels in CS4 with no problems and my workflow now almost depends on them.
I have tried everything I can think of, I turned off open GL, changed all the advanced options in open GL, removed all plugins etc.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You are not alone. There are other post where those with custom configurator panels are having delay problems. No fix that I have seen yet.
Hope you have not uninstalled CS4.

Color Management - Different Lab-Values in Eye-One and PS4

After having calibrated my screen "Eizo" and my printer Epson 3800 for - in this case paper Tecco PL285 carefully, I reached almost exact the same Lab-values, as I checked the monitor profile, printer profile and messured the printed output with Eye-one - (Monitor-Profile, Print Profile PL285, Result Photoprint) see table below. Colorprofil ICC was Adobe1998 in all cases. My monitor is calibrated with Kelvin 5500, Gamma 2.2 and brightness 120.
BUT my question is - as I messured the colors direct in PS4 with the pipette (Photoshop messure), the Lab values were very much different. Can anybody explain me the different or tell me where to adjust ? - A pure "human-eye-control" with my eyes saw the colors as almost being alike, but trying to be perfect - I will be happy to learn about/solve this.

Hello,
Set the rendering intent to absolute colorimetric in Photoshop's color settings. Otherwise, everything is stretched from L 0 to L 100.

Colour management warning for dual display users

For those of you who require a colour managed workflow and have more than one display, be very careful in Mountain Lion. It appears to have a bizarre bug where images loaded and shown on the primary display (e.g. in Preview) are initially rendered with the colour profile from the secondary display, or something along those lines. Dragging the display window to the secondary display and back again sorts things out. I've filed a bug report.
If your two (or more) monitors have the same colour profile, you won't have a problem. The only workaround I can see is to set your least important display(s) to all have the same profile as your (probably calibrated, if these things matter to you) primary display, at least until (if?) the bug gets fixed.
If you want to see it for yourself, set your two displays to differing profiles - e.g. NTSC (1953) on the primary and Wide Gamut RGB on the secondary. Then load an image into Preview - something with lots of shades of red "works" well for the colour profiles mentioned. Take a screenshot of the Preview window as a reference. Move the window to the secondary display; note the colour shift as it gets re-rendered. Now drag it back to the primary display. It'll look quite different compared to the screenshot you took earlier, despite the fact it's the same image being shown by the same application on the same display in the same window... All you did was drag the window between two monitors and back again.
It doesn't seem to matter if the image in question has a colour profile embedded in it or not. When comparing with your screenshot, feel free to drag the screenshot between the monitors too - after all, it'll be suffering the same rendering bug! You'll still see a different result; in fact it may even be magnified by the accumulated rendering errors.
Preview isn't the only application affected; I've seen identical issues under harder to replicate circumstances in Safari, for example.
Given this fault and others I've seen with colour rendering in Lion, plus several new bugs found in Mountain Lion, I'm afraid that if a colour managed workflow is important to you - well - Snow Leopard or Windows...?! Ugh, what a mess

I've encountered many of the same woes with color management being a graphic designer, but here's my issue:
Have a 15" (Early 2011) Macbook Pro. It is turned on with me hooked up to my Dell U2410 and display open for a dual display configuration. The Dell is my primary monitor.
I then unplug my MBP to use it around the house. I go to plug it back into the Dell for my dual monitor. I notice that the color on the Dell looks good, but now the MBP has a very blue color temperature. Like moving from the preconfigured 'Color LCD' profile to 'sRGB' which definitely shifts to a blue color on the MBP.
I check the color profiles in System Settings and the Color profiles are correct. 'Dell U2410' for my Dell and 'Color LCD' for my MBP. But as I said, it's much bluer than standard. I try to change the color profiles around on the MBP and no matter which I select it's always the same color with no shifts I would expect to see.
Only solution I have found is to restart my computer. Upon restarting all is well again in the world.
It's pretty annoying having to restart my computer everytime I plug it back into my workstation with Dell and keyboard.
Related note: USB does not work when I plug things back and again have to restart to fix this.

Colour matching problems photoshop to windows picture viewer.

Hi, Im having trouble colour matching photoshop to windows picture/fax viewer. The colours in windows (as many people have said before) are a lot more saturated.
Im using an EIZO CG222W and Photoshop CS2, colour balanced with an Eye-One Display.
The prints returns from photographic labs match what is displayed in photoshop perfectly though obviously not in windows.
I know windows is not colour balanced but I thought there would be little difference as we are also using another EIZO monitor and a IIYAMA monitor and these have no problems switching between photoshop and windows though they are both also colour balanced with the eye-one.
This applies to ALL windows applications... all colours in Internet explorer etc are over saturated as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did think of that as the reason, although I was a bit confused as like i said, we are also using another EIZO monitor which has a perfect balance between photoshop and windows yet I've checked all the setting between the two monitors which are the same.
It's an older eizo so it may just be this new one has a wider gamut.
Thanks for your help. I'll look into sRGB restrictions on windows and see if that works.
