Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related

Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
thought it might be RAM.
ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
thank you.
(this from another new snow leopard install)

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (Crash Log)

Hey guys. So i'm on a quest to diagnose kernel panics. Here's some background.
Just did a full zero/and reinstall on this MBP SR 2.2 ghz.
Also, just had RAM and logic board replaced from old kernel panics.
    Installed updates/repaired permissions
Vacuum Mail automation seems to be blocked (anyway to stop this?)
I use my mbox to play audio form my computer (through my monitors)
when i unplug the mbox the computer switches to internal speakers.
It says something about the mbox and io drivers in the log, but i don't know how to read them all.
shoudl also be noted that i use webkit nightlys and safari 3 (seen in log)
also, iTunes tends to hang often (meaning i have to reset to get it to open again becaus force quit wont do the job) any thing on that also?
so here is the console log, after this past crash (5 minutes ago)

Since my last post 45 days ago I had not a single issue with a program hanging anymore. What I did is to set the standard device for audio playback from the USB Digidesign MBox2 (Core Audio Driver 7.3) back to the Apple Mac Pro Internal LineOut.
I am so happy to finally have a stably running Mac. This is worth a lot.
I am not sure if our problems are really the same.
I don't see any "logs" folder in system/library. And what do you mean by crash ? A complete system halt ? For me it was only individual programs getting the spinning ball of death.
So it seems this issue of programs hanging to death and afterwards the computer not even able to quit the process for shutting down was indeed caused by the Digidesign Core Audio Driver. I must say I am really disappointed with Digidesign software. I have also encountered major bugs in Pro Tools LE 7.1.1, which was the Software bundled with my MBox2. There is one bug where it can happen that after saving and reopening your session, many of the region arrangements are messed up or truncated.
I dont think it is a bad idea to be a little conservative with new features, if this allows your software to be more stable for production. But Digidesign is both: conservative and buggy. Now even with the sound driver, who messes deeply with the system.
I am very disappointed. I bought Logic Studio now. Hope that this will finally make me happy .
Before I figured this out, I had already ordered another set of RAM and HDD. So now when those items arrive, I will have an unreasonable amount of RAM and HDD. However, I am sure it will turn out to be useful really soon.
I am thinking about getting Leopard (OSX 10.5) when it gets released, especially because of the Time Machine Backup Solution. I wonder if I can use my MBox2 there together with Logic Studio 8. Does anyone know, if the MBox2 runs under Leopard already (just curious if it runs at all, don't care about Digidesign approved ... which doesn't seem to mean much).
    Regards,
    Chri

  • Please help diagnose kernel panics

I'm having intermittent kernel panics on an Intel iMac (10.4.8). When they happen, it is always after a hotsync to a Palm Treo 680. I have never installed the Palm software, only MissingSync from MarkSpace. The sync looks like it's succeeded. MissingSync says it was fine, and the Treo has gone back to its normal hotsync screen. But just as that happens the panic occurs (sometimes). My guess is that it's when the Treo disconnects from the USB port. It's connected directly to a port on the back of the iMac. MarkSpace support had nothing obvious to suggest, other than uninstall, reset PRAM, repair disk, reinstall blah, blah. Can't see how this would help.
Anyone know if the Treo needs a USB driver as such, that would presumably be supplied by Macos or MissingSync? The panic report follows. Any pointers gratefully accepted!

All modern USB devices rely upon standard device drivers included with the operating system. OS X has built-in USB device drivers. However, not all USB devices are necessarily compliant.
As for the Treo I have no specific information on any incompatibilities with OS X when used with the proper software. If you use Missing Sync from MarkSpace just be sure you are using the most current version and that you don't also have Palm Desktop software installed as well. There is nothing specific in the panic.log file that points to The Missing Sync software directly, only that the panic was generated in one or more of the USB extensions.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics for more information.
I use Missing Sync with a Palm Tungsten E and it works fine on all my machines.
Do you use any other USB devices and/or USB hubs?
There are many possible causes of kernel panics. Corrupted device drivers and hardware defects are common causes. As I suggested before you would be wise to follow the suggestions given you by MarkSpace support.

  • Help diagnosing kernel panic?

My MacMini (mid 2011) 2.5GHz Core i5 w 16GB or RAM running of a 240GB SSD has never givenme a moments problem. Yesterday it started frequent kernel panics. Diagnosing them is over my head. Here are excerpts from the header of the console log for all the panics. There are only subtle differences between them, different CPU, but the "offending file" is the same every time. Can anyone tell me where the problem lies? Thanks, Mark

The Time Machine backup data on the network device is corrupt. The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.
After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced.

  • Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (MBP 8,2 on ML)

    Hello all,
I'm hoping you can help me resolve these kernel panics on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. They occur regardless of whether or not there is any external hardware attached, so we probably can rule that out straight away. In fact, they primarily seem to occur when I use Safari. The last two kernel panics I encountered happened while I was inputting data into a text field. The system froze for about a second, then the screen went black, and then after rebooting itself I was treated to the "your computer restarted because of a problem" screen. The computer then started up normally and was perfectly functional until I tried using Safari again, some 35 minutes later. I got some usable time in the browser and then, once again, poof.
I've been using Chrome since (my default browser) with zero kernel panics. I use three extensions with Safari: AdBlock, LastPass, and Coda Notes.
I've captured the last two crash reports (from the kernel panics described above) and they're included below.

I've run a check with Rember on my RAM (although I only had time for a single run) and all tests passed successfully.
    Thoughts?

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
    An internal hardware fault
An obscure bug in OS X
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it as directed in this support article.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

This may have nothing to do with the panic, but I noticed that the net.tunnelblick.tun kext is loaded. This is an indication that you are not using the latest version of Tunnelblick and/or you are not using the latest version of OpenVPN that Tunnelblick contains, or you are setting OpenVPN to specifically use the "tun" device. Recent (for the last year or so) versions of Tunnelblick use OS X's built-in "utun" device (available since OS X 10.6.8) instead of the add-on "tun" device.
If you are using an older version of Tunnelblick*, I urge you to update to the latest beta version, which includes important security updates and, depending on what old version you have, kext updates. You can use Tunnelbick's built-in updater (on the "Preferences" panel of the "VPN Details… window") or you can download it from Tunnelbick's Downloads page. If you download, be sure to install by double-clicking as directed – do not drag it to the Applications folder.
Before you do so, please note the current version you are using. If the update causes problems (unlikely), you can reinstall that old version (after downloading it from Tunnelblick's Security Risk Downloads page). To see what version of Tunnelblick you are using, click the "Info" panel at the top of Tunnelblick's "VPN Details… window".
    * You will not be able to update Tunnelblick if you have a "Deployed" version – see the note about that on Tunnelbick's Downloads page.

  • [HELP] Random Kernel Panics!

    Hello!
I have a MacMini that I use as a home server running Leopard 10.5.6. I keep getting these random kernel panics and have to force-restart the computer. I have updated the RAM to 2GB about 3 months ago, but the panics just started this month, so I'm not sure it's related. The mini runs several programs at all times (such as streaming video server, iTunes and iPhoto server, file sharing, internet sharing, web-cam, etc...).
I copied the logs generated after the last 4 crashes, but I don't know how to make sense of any of this. I'd be really thankful to anyone that can help. Here they are:

  • Help debugging Kernel Panics

The past couple of days I've started having kernel panics and I haven't changed anything with my system. I tend to be using Chrome when it happens but I don't know if it's related or not.
I upgraded the ram to 4GB so I tried taking one of the sticks out and it crashed a few minutes after rebooting. Prior to this I ran an extended memory test from the DVD and it didn't find any errors. Disk Utility has also been run and it didn't find anything.
Yesterday I reinstalled Snow Leopard and today it has crashed 3 times already. Can anyone look at the kernel panic dumps and provide some insight as to the problem? Unfortunately I don't have Apple Care and my previous Macbook Pro also died after 18 months!

First, stop using Chrome. Second, did you reinstall from scratch or reinstall over the existing system? Third, remove all USB devices, uninstall VM Fusion, the Huwai drivers, the Novamedia driver, and the Logitech software and drivers. If you erased and reinstalled SL, then ignore the uninstall part, but do not reinstall that software, and don't connect any USB peripherals.
If this solves the problem, then one or more of the above third-party hardware and drivers is either causing the panic or is incompatible with one or more of the other items and causing the panic. This could be due to outdated software that needs to be updated.
If the panics continue, then you should erase the drive and reinstall OS X only. If you still have panics then there's likely a hardware problem such as bad or marginal RAM.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.

  • Please help with kernel panic...

I have a mid 2010 MBP running 10.7.4 and I've been getting random kernel panics this past week or so.  It occurs randomly so I can't really pinpoint what's causing them. I also had issues with it coming back from sleep...I would just get a black screen and I'd have to hard reboot. I installed 8GB of Crucial RAM a couple of months ago which I replaced with the Apple RAM this morning, so far so good but I'm looking for some input if anyone has any.  I'm thinking the RAM was the problem but I'm not certain.
Here's the latest log I have from this morning before I switched back to the Apple RAM....any help would be appreciated:

Although it's quite possible the problem was the new RAM, determining if one has bad RAM is problematical at best. You can try:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
Of course you would need to reinstall the new RAM first. Sometimes the problem is just that the new RAM did not seat properly.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Nothing in the panic log stands out except that you may have been using system Help when the panic occurred. Is this something that always triggers the panic?

  • Is there a site that help's diagnose Kernel Panics?

Aised from Apple or a Genius Bar, is there a site what diagnoses kenral panics? My Mid 2010 MacPro with Mountain Lion (latest) is crashing several times a day. I have added nothing new to it. It passes the extended hardware test. It's fine for hours and then I notice a tiny halt in a mouse movement, and that means I'll crash soon. Within 10 minutes a random mouse movement will freeze, and then it crashes. I know the proper suspects are MEMORY, any added new equipment, etc. Is there a site where they can look at the Crash report and point me in the right direction?
    thanks.

  • Help with kernel panic diagnosis

hi - have an ~18 month old imac 24 (2.8GHz, 2GB ram) running 10.5.8 and the power supply went bad and it was replaced about 3 weeks ago. following that, everything was working fine for about 2 weeks and then 4 days ago i started getting kernel panics - have had 5 since then. 4 of them when the mac was being used (safari, calendar, itunes) - i don't recall any specific action that triggered it, and once when it was sitting around idle.
have been thru the steps documented in the various faqs but have found no issues and it happened again today.
    - extended hw test - ok
    - repair disk and permissions - ok
    - check for insufficient ram and disk - ok
    - checked firmware versions - ok
    - run all software updates - ok
latest log from today's panic is below
any idea where to go next?
    thanks!

in my experience 98% of kernel panics are due to issues involving Memory. Since you recently had your mac services, check to be sure the memory chips are seated properly.

  • Need some help with Kernel Panic

I don't know how to read the log so I'm just gonna post it here and hope someone can help find out what's cause the kernel panics on my mac. Here are some stats on my mac:

Can someone tell me based on my log what's causing my kernel panic?

Can't diagnose the problem with any precision, but kernel panics are generally RAM or hardware related.

  • Kernel panic: hardware or software related

I had two kernel panic incidents recently. I know that most kernel panics are related to hardware. I have not 3rd party ram and only my monitor, keyboard (apple) and mouse installed. That is, no additional usb or firewire devices. I understand that faulty ram is one possibility and that ram tests may not fully diagnose the problem. I tested my ram with rember and the techtools that I got with my applecare (runs out march 2009.) I was not able to boot into the techtools DVD so had to run it off of the harddrive after updating. I ran rember with the finder still active (there is the option to run rember without the finder running). The memory tests in rember and techtools passed which I understand may not tell me much. I have not yet run the memory test off of my install disks.
Before updating to 10.4.11 using the combo updater, I booted from my install disk and repaired the drive (it was ok) and repaired permissions (from the install disk). I did the same two tasks from the install disk after the updates, although I let a couple of days pass before doing these tasks. After reading in another forum that repairing permissions from the install disk (os 10.4.5) might have caused some problems, I just repaired permissions while running from my day-to-day account.
    I have decent backups.
I thought I'd run my two kernel panics by you folk in this forum to see if anyone has any suggestions.
    *kernel panic #1*
I got this kernel panic the other day on shutting down. That is I shut down using the shutdown command in the apple menu then got the kernel panick The only new thing that I had done (asides from finally updating to macosx 10.4.11 and the latest security patch) was that I had my idisk set to automatic, so the mirror agent was active. I have shut down a couple of times since with out kernel panic.

This actually happened twice put I only have one crash log. I think that the reason why I only had one crash log is because after the second kernel panic, I had to boot into safe mode to get rid of my icalalarm scheduler from my login items because of some conflict. Anyway, the scenario is that I am using firefox 3.0 (I have the latest version) and then open google earth. After I try to open google earth, I get kernel panic.

I went to the Apple Store in Bridgewater NJ, receiving very thorough attention from Alma (Apple Genuis). She read the report from my earlier conversation with Apple Care, I told her about the error message from AHT, and she then did a very thorough diagnostic using one of their utilities. Her theory was that if it was hardware related, that it might be the graphics card on the logic board or the memory. Seems that she was having a hard time finding the error code for my mini model in their database. <shrug> The memory test took about an hour and it passed. And I think it passed the other tests she did, but when she tried to reboot the machine, got a kernel panic which told her that it is the logic board (graphics card that is soldered on the logic board.
The Bridgewater NJ store is undergoing some renovations so they are, for the moment, not able to order parts and have lost much of their backroom. But she took down a detailed report with new apple care case number after making an appointment for me at another apple store (Menlo Park, I've been there before, they are good). She also told them to order a logic board. I work tomorrow, so I am going this Friday afternoon.
