Help! "Disk can not be read from or written to" error

Hi, I just bought a couple of movies on itunes but when I try to sync them to iphone it stalls and I get the error "Attempt to copy to disk "my iphone" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to". Oddly though everything else except the videos seems to sync OK (including new songs I added to my iphone playlist). Any suggestions?

yeah, I can watch them on itunes I just can't get them to sync to iphone. I've also been able to sync other .mp4 videos to the phone just not the ones from the itunes store.

  • Disk can not be read from or written to

This iPod nano second gen is brand new. Bought it today and I put like 10 songs and 10 photos on for my sister and now it's saying "disk can not be read from or written to" and now it's not showing up in iTunes or "My Computer". Help, please?

Is there an error number listed in the message? This would be helpful. You may also want to check for other threads that may have already answered your questions before posting. Another good option even before using the forums is to go to the iPod nano support section and then search through the articles for possible solutions. The links I have provided to some of your threads have come from aquick search of the problem you listed starting on the main support page Support.

  • "Disk could not be read from or written to" error

    Is it dead?
When syncing to my 30Gig ipod, I received the error as noted in the subject line "Attempting to copy to the disk "" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
After updating the USB port and reinstalling the the software, I ran the 2005-10-12 updator. It gave me the option to "restore" which I did. I then received the following error "Formatting failure. Disk write error."

  • "Device can not be read from or written to" error keeps coming up...

I have recently updated to the 3.1 firmware on my iPhone 3G (after a couple failed attempts).
The problems seemed to start there when the update froze midway through and I had to try a couple more times. After I did and restored my settings, iTunes said that my backup file didn't work. I tried a couple more times to restore from the backup but ended up having to restore as a new device.
Now, as I try to sync all of my, well, everything, I keep getting an error message.
It synced all of my contacts, apps, calendar, etc., but when it gets to my music and videos it will sync a bit of it before giving me the error messages:
"Cannot sync ___, the required disk is not found"
    and immediately after,
"Device can not be read from or written to."
I've tried syncing my iPhone many times, and these errors keep coming up.
    What should I do?

    Hi,
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207 provides tips that will resolve issues causing this message to appear with iPhones and iPods.
Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the PC, using the cable that came with it.

  • Can't Synch.."disk can not be read from or written to"

Hellppp...trying to get daughter's IPOD Nano to synch. It's a 3rd gen video (squarish model).
We start the log-in try to synch...it reads for a moment then says "the disk cannot be read from or written to". We can all her songs in the new library we created..uploaded from the Nano...next she buys 5 songs and can't synch back down to nano.
We've tried full resets, new iD's at the I-store, recognizing "new hardware on this laptop" etc. Could the nano be shot? Plays fine and loads her brothers songs fine but won't accept new songs she bought in her own store?
    Help..

    Hey there,
    And Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you had a chance to look at this Apple support document relating to this exact issue? If not, I would check it out. Make sure to work through each troubleshooting solution one at a time. Could be of help.
[Disk cannot be read from or written to when syncing iPod or Firmware update failure error when updating or restoring iPod|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207]
Otherwise, I would try completely formatting the iPod through Windows and then restoring it through iTunes. Instructions on how to do this can be found below. Its worth a shot.

  • Downloading from iTunes store  "...disk could not be read from or written to" error

Mysterious "err = -36". Any suggestions?
Using iMac with 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.  Honestly iTunes hasn't been working too well lately.

Just doublechecking. In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?
["Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207]

  • I get the following error when trying to sync (Iphone 4s): ....The disk can not be read from or written to." HELP!

I repaid the disks, its problems with Iphoto, should I just reset the iphoto and start from scratch?

I am encountering the same problem -- though with .qfx files from my bank. This worked fine in Firefox 31 ESR, but since upgrading to Firefox 33.0, I get the "<name>.qfx.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read" when I attempt to download. (I should add that downloading PDF statements from the same site works fine, and that the qfx downloads work fine in IE and Chrome.)
I tried safe mode, it is still broken. Tried v34 beta, no luck. I reverted to version 31, it works again.
I guess I will stick with the older version until a solution is found...or just use an alternate browser to download my financial data.

  • Ipod disk can not be read from or written to

I have updated my itunes software and restored my ipod to the original settings. It still will not let me load any music onto it, including music that was previously loaded onto it. When I tried to reset it, I got a message saying that it was corrupted and had to be reset. The second time I reset the ipod, it worked but I still can't load anything onto it. It's very frustrating!!!!!! Any suggestions? Thank you!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for the article link you mentioned. I had looked at that same article and I thought that resetting the ipod would work. I don't think any of the songs are corrupted because they were on the ipod before I had started having problems with it. I can't seem to find any particular song that is corrupted. I have already updated my Mac with the most recent stuff (as far as I know) so I don't think that is causing it either. It had started to copy some songs and then just stopped. It never seems to be at the same song though.
Thanks so much for your help!!!!!!!!

  • Touch, XP, The disk could not be read from or written to error FIXED!!!!

I tried everything that I found suggested anywhere, including spending two hours with Apple on the phone.
In the end, I bought a new Belkin USB 2.0 (high speed) card and installed it, and synced all 1000 songs in one shot.
For those of you who are getting this infuriating error, consider whether you have a good USB card from a reputable company. Mine was third party and (apparently) not so good. Yes, it was a 2.0 card.
I'm not saying run out and spend $35 now, but consider it when all else fails.

    i appreciate everyones help lol..
I have called apple 2000000000000 times... no help.
and i have emailed itunes support, with no response besides the automated "we recieved it" response

there is no disk:) i have no idea what this warning means.. i have restarted and nothing.. i updated itunes and same warning.. there is no disk in the drive at all..

    A few things to try:
    • Restore Permissions, using Disk Utility (in ~Applications/Utilities)
    • Set the correct Ownership & Permissions for the iTunes folder:
Select the iTunes folder in ~/Users/YourUsername/Music.
    Get Info (command-I).
Expand 'Ownership & Permissions' and 'Details:'
You must read: 'You can Read & Write': if not, change it.
Click on the 'Apply to enclosed items...' button.
    Hope this helps.

  • "disk could not be read from or written to" Sync fails

I have several songs that not only will not sync to the ipad, but rather than just skimping the songs, the sync process stops. The only work around is to remove the offending songs from iTunes.
These include songs that I purchased through iTunes.
    Two errors are generated:
First is the "disk could not be read from or written to" error, and then second dialog indicates that file could not be reade or written.
Each of the song files plays fine in iTunes and each syncs fine to iPods and iPhone.
Anyone else getting this or have any ideas about a solution.

I'm a little confused that this problem hasn't received more attention. Basically the sync feature is broken and I am unable to complete my sync of my music from iTunes. And I leave for a month trip next week and was hopeful to have it all loaded. Anyone out there got a solution?

  • Please help! iPod won't sync: "Disk could not be read from or written to."

I am at the end of my rope with the endless problems I've been having with iTunes and my iPod ever since the iTunes update which included Gapless Playback (a feature which now invariably crashes my entire computer unless I disable it quickly enough). My latest problem has now made my iPod completely useless because I cannot sync it with my music library. Every time it tries to update the songs, it either crashes or I get the error message "Disk could not be read from or written to." I have tried restoring my iPod, which seemed to work, except that after the restore function seemingly completed I still have the flashing Do Not Disconnect screen on my iPod (after about 30 minutes). I already tried synching my iPod while this was going on and I got the same disk error message. Please, please, can anyone tell me what on earth is going on? I've NEVER had problems like this and all of a sudden it seems like everything about iTunes is a complete disaster.

I had the same problem after I moved my library from my PC to my new iMac. It would not sync properly. After a day of thinking about it, researching it, and trying things like starring at the screen to see what song it failed on as it ran the auto sync (a suggestion posted on this site), a light bulb went off. Switch it to manual! If you manually manage the songs that sync it is easy to discover what songs fail. When auto sync is managing it, it jumps all over the place when synchronizing, but if you manually grab say 500 +/- songs at a time, it goes in alphabetical order, and you can see where it fails. It will be the track(s) immediately following the the last track that made it on the iPod. The songs that were corrupted for me played fine in iTunes, but would not transfer to the iPod, and they worked when I was syncing with my PC. Hmmm? I hope this helps.

  • Can't sync to iPod: The disk could not be read from or written to.

I recently installed a new operating system (Windows XP with service pack 2), and then downloaded the latest version of iTunes. The next time I hooked up my iPod (3rd gen.)to sync it, iTunes removed all of the music that I'd purchased on iTunes, and i was unable to sync it back on. Then every time I opened iTunes to try again, my computer would freeze (but only when on iTunes). I used the restore function to restore factory settings, so now there is nothing at all on my iPod and when I try to sync, it gives the above message (The iPod cannot by synced. The disk could not be read from or written to). Any suggestions for how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks!

  • The disk could not be read from or written to----help please!!

Hey, I'm sorry if this has been posted numerous times, but I really need some help. Everytime I plug in my 30 gig 5thG ipod, I'll start to load songs on (either manually or automatically) and this message will pop up after about 50-100 songs have been loaded: "Attempting to copy to the disk, "ITIM" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." This used to happen only once in a while, but now it's happening all the time. My ipod has no problem being recognized by itunes and the songs I have on it show up fine. It's a pain to load my library at intervals of 100 songs because I have about 6000 songs. I've also tried reseting my ipod several times, which doesn't seem to help at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That article mentions other things also, like any anti virus software you may have. You could try turning it off.
It also mentions damaged song files.
In truth it could be a lot of things, and it's curious that you say this used to happen once in a while.
It could be also be a problem with the cable or even the iPod itself.
I take it you've tried restoring the iPod?
See: How to restore the iPod to factory settings.
I don't know what iScrobbler is, but any software can interfere with the workings of the iPod (delicate and fussy little creatures that they are).
