  • Please help! iPod won't sync: "Disk could not be read from or written to."

I am at the end of my rope with the endless problems I've been having with iTunes and my iPod ever since the iTunes update which included Gapless Playback (a feature which now invariably crashes my entire computer unless I disable it quickly enough). My latest problem has now made my iPod completely useless because I cannot sync it with my music library. Every time it tries to update the songs, it either crashes or I get the error message "Disk could not be read from or written to." I have tried restoring my iPod, which seemed to work, except that after the restore function seemingly completed I still have the flashing Do Not Disconnect screen on my iPod (after about 30 minutes). I already tried synching my iPod while this was going on and I got the same disk error message. Please, please, can anyone tell me what on earth is going on? I've NEVER had problems like this and all of a sudden it seems like everything about iTunes is a complete disaster.

I had the same problem after I moved my library from my PC to my new iMac. It would not sync properly. After a day of thinking about it, researching it, and trying things like starring at the screen to see what song it failed on as it ran the auto sync (a suggestion posted on this site), a light bulb went off. Switch it to manual! If you manually manage the songs that sync it is easy to discover what songs fail. When auto sync is managing it, it jumps all over the place when synchronizing, but if you manually grab say 500 +/- songs at a time, it goes in alphabetical order, and you can see where it fails. It will be the track(s) immediately following the the last track that made it on the iPod. The songs that were corrupted for me played fine in iTunes, but would not transfer to the iPod, and they worked when I was syncing with my PC. Hmmm? I hope this helps.

  • "The disk could not be read from or written to"? Help!

I was recently trying to update my ipod (5th gen. video) and sync it with my new music I downloaded, however the new songs would not sync and this error message came up:
Attempting to compy to the disk "ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.
There is still plently of availible space on my ipod, so what is the problem?
    Thanks!

  • The disk could not be read from or written to----help please!!

Hey, I'm sorry if this has been posted numerous times, but I really need some help. Everytime I plug in my 30 gig 5thG ipod, I'll start to load songs on (either manually or automatically) and this message will pop up after about 50-100 songs have been loaded: "Attempting to copy to the disk, "ITIM" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." This used to happen only once in a while, but now it's happening all the time. My ipod has no problem being recognized by itunes and the songs I have on it show up fine. It's a pain to load my library at intervals of 100 songs because I have about 6000 songs. I've also tried reseting my ipod several times, which doesn't seem to help at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That article mentions other things also, like any anti virus software you may have. You could try turning it off.
It also mentions damaged song files.
In truth it could be a lot of things, and it's curious that you say this used to happen once in a while.
It could be also be a problem with the cable or even the iPod itself.
I take it you've tried restoring the iPod?

  • The disk could not be read from or written to.  Please help.

I don't understand why this is not working for me. Let me explain... I have two iPods, one is a 1st Gen and the other one is a Video one. Every time I tried to add music to the 1st Gen iPod I get a message that says - "Attempting to copy to the disk "NameOfiPod" failed. This disk could not be read from or written to." - but when I add music to the iPod Video it goes really smooth without any problems.
I read the following article and to be honest I didn't find an answer to this issue. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267
I checked the list to make sure everything is on point:
    1. Outdated operating system software
    - I'm up to date
    2. Computer needs updates
    - Again, everything is up to date
    3. Software interference
    - No software has been installed lately
    4. Damaged files
    - I've tried many and same thing happenes
    5. Damaged disk structure
    - Everything appears to be OK.
    6. To repair your computer's hard disk
    - No errors or damaged files
    7. To repair an iPod disk
    - Restored it using latest iPod Updater
    8. Corrupt iPod photo Cache
    - Don't have that, this is a 1st Gen iPod
    9. Lost connection
    - No connection drop
    10. Bad hardware
    - I use the same USB cable for both iPods
I just don't know what to do next. Let me know if anyone else has another idea.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

OK! I found what the problem was. It seems that the 1st Gen iPod does not like to be plugged to the front USB port on my G5, weird because my iPod Video has not complained a bit about it. As soon as I plugged the USB cable to one of the back ports it worked flawless. Dragged and dropped my music on it and it went straight in without any errors. Nice, huh?
Thanks though to those who tried to help me.

  • Help, the disk could not be read from or written to.

Help, I've been an ipod user since the first one came out, so I know my way around this thing. My problem is I can't get the songs I've purchased from iTunes or songs that I add from my external hard drive to load on my ipod classic 120g. Now I've been doing this for years and hundreds of times so nothing has changed. Now I'm getting the message The disk could not be read from or written to. Ok, I've done a complete restore, uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled iTunes, I took the ipod to the apple store and they checked it and said it was fine. Now I need this for work so I need a fix. Can anyone help.  Thanks Scott.

  • Disk could not be read from or written to? help please

I Just got my itunes to recognize my ipod but now when I try and sync my ipod it says "Attempt to copy to the disk "blah blah" failed. the disk could not be read from or written to" does anyone know how I can fix this?

I started experiencing the same problem 1 day after (according to Apple records) my warranty ran out. Would anyone want to post the "other solution" they have, but isn't on their website?
I may have gotten mine working again, its currently resyncing up all my songs, so it will take a while before I know for sure, but it looks promising.
    Here's what I did...
    Uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1 (reboot)
Backed-up iTunes 7.0.1 library (xml and itl file)
    Reinstalled iTunes 6.0.5
    * Restored iPod from 2006-06-28 updater
    Reboot
Kill all iPod/iTunes services from Task Manager
Make sure iPod Service is stopped from Services
    Put iPod in Disk Mode
    Start iPod Service
    Connect iPod to computer
Delete the iTunes Libary files (xml and itl file) so that iTunes creates new ones when it is launched.
    Launch iTunes
Add some files to your library
If it works, try adding the rest of your files.
    * I had lots of trouble with this, but eventually got it to work. Seems like it was in disk mode and I might have also killed all the other iPod/iTunes processes from Task Manager the time it was successful in restoring.

  • IPod Error Message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."

    Hello!
I was syncing my sister's video iPod (30GB) and this error message pops up "Attempting to copy to the disk. "SARAH'S IPO" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have restored it three times already, but once it starts putting the music and files back onto the iPod it pops up with that error message. I have updated to the latest version of iTunes and iPod software available. My OS is Windows XP.
Is this something serious? Will I be able to fix it myself or will I need to send it in to be fixed by Apple? Will that be expensive? We didn’t get the Apple replacement plan. D=
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. ^_^
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   15" PowerBook 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5GB RAM - Windows XP with iPod 5 Generation

Okay I went thru that entire list and here's what I got...
    (1) My OS is XP and is running fine.
    (2) I've updated my windows
    (3) I don't know of any software that might be interfering.
    (4) There are no damaged files.
    (5) My Windows hard-drive is not damaged and I've tried restoring my iPod's disk thru iTunes but it still doesn't work.
    (6) I don't have an iPod photo and I can't find the folder to delete the cache if if I did.
    (7) The USB cord is firmly connected into my USB port and my iPod
    (8) My music is on my external hard-drive so I need to keep 3rd-party hardware connected
    (9) I will try another USB cord to see if that works.
Is there anything else that I can do? Can Apple fix this?
    Please let me know.

It's so simple, dont worry. Just connect your ipod to the computer. iTunes must open. In iTunes clcik on the small ipod icon which appears at the right bottom of the itunes window. click on that icon and another window with some options will be opened. Click on "enable disk use" and make this selection marked and click ok.
    it'll certainly help!

  • "The disk could not be read from or written to"??

When I try to sync my ipod it gives me following error message "Attempting to copy to the disk 'My Ipod' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
Have not reset or restored it yet, wondering if there is anything I can do that doesn't involve me deleting all the songs on my ipod.

  • 9.1.1 sync problems: "The disk could not be read from or written to."

Using OSX 10.6.3 and upgraded to iTunes 9.1.1. Once I did, I keep getting the following error message: "Attempting to copy to the disk [my ipod] failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." This is followed by another error message: "iTunes could not copy {name of file} to the iPod {iPod name} because the file could not be read or written."
I tried deleting the files mentioned in the error message, but then the message returns with the name of a different file. At this rate, I'll be deleting all my files!
I tried checking everything on the Knowledge Base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207
I tried restoring my iPod (twice), but it didn't help.
All my software is up to date. I haven't added any new software since I upgraded iTunes.
NOW...when I try to sync my iPhone, I get the same error message.
What's going on, and can anyone help?
This is very annoying since I can't sync my iPhone which I need or my iPod which I would like.

check if you have read & write permissions for your iTunes music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access. if this doesn't help, try the same on your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder).
if that make no difference, try reinstalling iTunes. click here and follow the instructions. next, download a fresh copy from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
you might also try to _*remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service*_

  • Error when syncing iPod: The disk could not be read from or written to!!

I have an iPod mini which worked fine on my Windows XP.
Recently got Windows Vista and I downloaded iTunes and my put my music in the library.
When I plugged my iPod into the Vista, it said it was syncing all the songs to my iPod.
After about 3 hours, whilst syncing the last song a notice came up saying, 'Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
I restored my iPod and reinstalled iTunes but the same thing happend.
I decided to plug my iPod back into the Windows XP, where I've had no problems. When I did this and started snycing all the songs, I got the notice come up again.
'Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
I haven't been able to use my iPod now for about 5 weeks because I cannot solve the problem so any help will be much appreciated!
    Thanks

  • 2G Shuffle error "disk could not be read from or written to"

Just recieved a 2G as a gift. First sync went fine. Songs transferred without issue. Wanted to change some settings and re-sync with new songs and got the error message "disk could not be read from or written to".
Have tried on an XP64 and a Windows 2000 machine with same error. I can sync from an XP Pro Laptop fine. All three are using the same driver (USBSTOR.sys).
Need some help trouble shooting this issue. The XP64 is my main computer and is the one I would like to solve this issue on. I also have a 30GB iPod that syncs on the XP64 machine with no problems.

I don't think the Apple store folks will be able to do anything because the issue is not with every computer.
The fact that I have a computer that can sync with the Shuffle without errors tells me there is an issue with the other 2 machines. As I cannot use the Laptop as my primary library I would like to solve the issue.
I still suspect either iTunes itself or the driver. If anyone else has any suggestions please share them.

  • Can't sync to iPod: The disk could not be read from or written to.

I recently installed a new operating system (Windows XP with service pack 2), and then downloaded the latest version of iTunes. The next time I hooked up my iPod (3rd gen.)to sync it, iTunes removed all of the music that I'd purchased on iTunes, and i was unable to sync it back on. Then every time I opened iTunes to try again, my computer would freeze (but only when on iTunes). I used the restore function to restore factory settings, so now there is nothing at all on my iPod and when I try to sync, it gives the above message (The iPod cannot by synced. The disk could not be read from or written to). Any suggestions for how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks!
