Help - disk0s2: I/O Error

I have a late 2007 Mac Book Pro and I recently replaced a cracked screen... The computer was working fine for a week and now it won't boot up at all... It simply stalls out in the grey screen with the apply logo and the timer circling.... I have run the fsck -f and this is the message I am receiving... What should I do to fix this message:
disk0s2: I/O Error
Any help would be appreciated...

You could try booting from the original install DVD (hold c at restart) and then run Disc Utility from the top menu bar and use both repair disc and repair permissions, it might work but I think you're looking at a hard drive failure quite possibly ...

You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
get a new hard drive installed inside.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Brand New Internal Hard Drive with "disk0s2: I/O error" (iMac 2007/10.6.8)

    Hello,
I have a 2007 iMac 21" Aluminum running 10.6.8 with 4GB RAM. Two years ago I had a 2TB Western Digital drive installed, which ran fine until about two weeks ago. The performance of my iMac went down hill fast. At first I didn't suspect the drive but, finally, Disk Utility did start showing errors (including the disk0s2: I/O error).
Today I had an authorized Apple service center remove the drive and replace it with a brand new 2TB drive (a Toshiba, if you're curious). Tonight I booted up and noticed some sluggishness. So I rebooted in safe-mode (holding down the shift key), disabled a few auto-start apps I had, and rebooted. Problem solved.
Now, the computer is performing fine it seems, but I have a (free) menu bar app installed called SMARTreporter version 2.7.3. Since booting it has thrown several disk0s2: I/O errors. Excerpt:
    Aug  2 21:45:17 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:45:47 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:46:25 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:49:45 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:50:51 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:52:27 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:53:52 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:54:45 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 21:57:41 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:00:14 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:13:05 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:14:28 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:15:56 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:17:16 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:20:06 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Aug  2 22:22:38 localhost kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
I will add that I noticed these errors after I work the iMac from sleep and got one or two more after I work it from sleep. But it's been several minutes since I got another notice from SMARTreporter (which uses growl notices, which is nice). The last line shown above is the last diskOs2 error I've seen in the past 45 min. or so.
I know it's possible to get a bad drive, so I haven't ruled that out. I'm just surprised if that's indeed the case. But I want to make sure I know what's going on, and any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    UPDATE...
I took it into a different authorized Apple reseller/tech (Mac Authority Nashville) and they did a diagnostic on the spot, indicating that the drive was OK. They suggested it was probably a loose cable.
I took it back to the other place and they took time to disassemble it again and check the cables. The cables were fine (they showed me pics on their iPad - nice touch since I couldn't go back in the back). They suspected it could be corrupted data and that I should eliminate that possibility before dropping another $100 on it to find out what the issue is -- especially since it's six years old (this weekend, in fact. I chuckled when Apple said that it's now classified as a "vintage" machine).
Now I have re-installed Snow Leopard and have run all the updates. (Before installing the OS from DVD I ran Disk Utility and everything checked out fine.)
I also ran an app called EtreCheck and it identified some launch agents for apps I deleted long ago. I cleaned up some old files (verrrrrry judiciously) there and restarted.
So far my iMac has been running 3+ hours without a hint of problems or performance issues, so I'm encouraged that the problem is apparently fixed (if I have more trouble, I'll come back to this thread with another update). Appaently I just spent money on a hard drive I apparently didn't need. (Time for a SATA case so I can have a new external back-up...)
    LESSON:
It doesn't hurt, usually, to start with reinstalling the OS when serious performance issues arise.

  • Disk0s2: I/0 error - I can't start up my macbook air

Please help; my macbook air will not start up past the chimes and the grey screen.
I've tried command s and I get the disk0s2 1/0 error  Exited with signal 8 - Do I need to take in in for repairs
or am I able to fix it myself?

You should be able to put the DVD into the optical drive then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the DVD icon for the installer disc then click the arrow button below the icon.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Keep getting disk0s2: I/0 error on safe boot?

    HI,
I have booked into Apple as MacBook won't go past grey logo etc but am carrying out safe boot it just keeps saying disk0s2: I/0 error repeatedly, is it still booting or does it mean I just need to shut it down?????

Don't rely on that, most of the data on your Mac is not on your iPad, some photos will be, Contacts, Calendars, Mail etc should be and if you use Pages/Numbers some data files may be. That's about it. (Music you purchased from iTunes can be downloaded again, music that was not purchased in iTunes can not unless you are using iTunes Match)
You should backup from now on, nothing is safe unless you do.
I don't really understand how your post is helpful but now it is marked that way so be it.
    Good luck.

  • Startup problems. Grey screen. Disk0s2 i/o error

    Hi everyone!
I have a Macbook Pro from late 2011. Some time ago I had some startup issues. The computer kept frozen in the gray screen. I tried starting in single user mode, and running fsck and it said disk0s2 i/o error. Even with the Disk utility in the recovery HD, couldn't solve the problem.
Then I changed the Hard drive. Now I had the new hard drive for less than 1 month, and I have exactlly the same problem!! Is it possible that my laptop is burning all the Hard drives I put in it?? Is very strange that two different hard drives, diferent brands, have exactlly the same fail. And one new hard drive with just one month use!
    Anyone can help me?

am i going to be able to get it back with an installation disk?
You won’t know unless you try. Booting up from the Installer DVD, launch Disk Utility, select your hard disk, and click Verify Disk.
If there are any errors, click Repair Disk. You may need to repeat it until Disk Utility reports there are no problems.
If, however, there are still problems with your disk, you may need something like DiskWarrior, which is a much more powerful tool.

    Hi Dietmar,
    Thanks for your reply.
There's no jasperreports-fonts-3.7.4.jar file in the webapps/JasperReportsIntegration/WEB-INF/lib folder. The only font file available is jasperreports-fonts-4.5.0.jar. I've downloaded the 3.7.40 jar file and saved it in the same folder without deleting the 4.5.0.jar. I tried to run the Test application again and still give me the same error.

Our DBA added the Java system property in the startup script by adding these 2 lines. But it errored out on the first 2 lines. I'm not sure if I do have the right syntax.

  • Blue Screen of Death & disk0s2: I/O error

    Hi
My Mac just slowed down suddenly yesterday, then when I tried to reboot, it went to grey screen Apple logo & spinning ball for ages, then stalled on blue screen.
    I tried the following:
    1. Ran Applejack 3 times on auto - said "errors repaired" or "no errors"
    2. Restarted with Leopard Install disk & repaired disk with Disk Utilty - said "no errors"
    3. Reset the SMC
    4. Tried to reset PRAM, but Mac just booted to blue screen
    5. Deleted Preference Panes in Library like Application Enhancer.
    6. Booted in verbose mode to check for error messages
    7. Tried to re-install Leopard with "Install & archive" but install quit after 30 minutes, saying hard drive may have errors.
    8. Tried to re-boot from install disk, but wouldn't reboot.
In verbose mode, I noted some of the messages:
    disk0s2: I/O error
    ParallelsConnectUSB... Control service not started
ALF ALERT sockwallcntl_updaterules_ctlenqueuedata rts err 55
During the last Applejack, I got this message:
Incorrect block count for file kdc.log (It should be 50 instead of 26)
Some of the other forum threads I've read suggest that the hard drive is bust, but I was able to search for programs & go anywhere in the directories in single user mode. I was even able to delete Application Enhancer prefPane. Surely, I wouldnt be able to do that if the hard disk was bust?
    Any advice?

    cannot run on Snow Leopard.
If you are running Snow Leopard, you need to correct your system information as it currently shows you are running Leopard.
Apple's Hardware Test is not found on install discs. Just the discs that came with your computer - system discs.
I can't tell if you are experiencing hardware or software issues or possibly both.
Part of your original post indicates possible directory issues. DiskWarrior will clear that right up.
If you live near an Apple Store, they can run a few diagnostic tests to let you know what the problem is for free.
For a small handling fee, you can get system discs directly from Apple. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Since you live in the UK, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number -

hp pavilion dv6 6180 help me for this error when I am using my recovery disk
The destination drive is not connected

Hello Mohammadshamlou.  I understand that you're having some issues using your Recovery Disc.  It is giving you the error that the drive is not connected.  Is this correct?  How long have you had the notebook?
What issue originally led you to want to try a recovery?
The error seems to imply that it is not detecting the hard drive as this would be the most logical destination drive.  So, I feel the best thing to try first is verify that the hard drive is in proper working order.  Follow these steps and please post the result.
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue.

  • Lost user profile and disk0s2: I/O error during start up in safe mode

My almost 2 year old Mac Book Pro (10.7.5) started lagging and rainbow spiraling last week and now it usually doesn't make it to the login page after boot up. It stays on the gray apple screen until I hold the power button to power it off.
If it makes it to the login page, after 10-20 minutes on the gray apple screen, my primary user profile is not there but the standadr guest user and my blank student user are still there and do work with many rainbow spirals interruptions.
I started it in safe mode and have also tried starting it with command-option-p-r to reset the PRAM and it went through the double start up sounds but still did not load my primary user profile on the login screen, still after a very long boot up process.
I then started it up in safe mode and watched the progress it seemed to run cleanly through lines and lines of code until it hit  a bunch of lines of "disk0s2: I/O error" ...
Are my computer's brains toast??? I just did a Time Machiene back up to an external hard drive as few days ago ... but what needs to be done with my computer?

    "disk0s2: I/O error" ...
This indicates a disk failure, though a hardware failure involving the connection between the HD and logic board is also a remote possibility. If you are able to successfully repair it with Disk Utility, it will probably recur.
Replace the disk and restore from your Time Machine backup. Hard disks are not expensive and it's easy enough to replace it yourself.

  • Please help me with this error: "Apple application support was not found... Error 2"

Can anyone please help me with this error: "Apple application support was not found... Error 2"
I've followed the instructions by removing all Apple files from my laptop, but when I reinstall the iTunes software it still comes up with this message:
"Apple application support is required to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2"
    Thank you

iTunes "Apple Application Support is required... Error 2" and possible fix.
I know this is a bit late but I came accross this thread trying to resolve this same problem and came up with a solution that worked for me, so thought I would share it here too. I hope it helps someone else.
I just resolved this on Win Vista (should apply equally for Win7 too). Please uninstall iTunes before proceeding though. I'll walk you through the process I followed, if you like you can jump straight to the Solution section.
    Problems:
The initial error during the installation of iTunes was:
An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken='1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b",processorarchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x8007054F
The error (after installing iTunes) when trying to run iTunes was:
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2 (Windows error 2).
After trying various fixes around the forums I came across this MSKB article, which relates to the first installation error:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2688946
This lead me to trying to install MS Visual C++ but I received the following error trying to install that:
    Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC80.ATL,type=”win32”,version=”8.0.50727.762”,publicKeyToken=”1fc8b3 b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”amd64”’. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070BC9. Assembly interface: IassemblyCacheItem, function: Commit, component: {837BF1EB-D770-94EB-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}
Note: The installation of VC++ rolls back when it fails.
    Solution:
Through this error I found this MSKB article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414
The Automated MS "Fix It" msi package didn’t work.
Note: Please backup your registry first (see the above MSKB article for instructions).
I opened the registry and (as instructed in the MSKB article) deleted the following keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\
    PendingXmlIdentifier
    NextQueueEntryIndex
    AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
    Reboot and reinstall iTunes.
If it helps you please like this so others can find it.

Your hard disk is dying, or is dead.  You need to take it in to get it replaced.  I hope you have a current backup.
