Help: do i really want an Apple TV or a Mac Mini?

Hi,
I have an iMac and Airport Extreme base station upstairs in the den. Downstairs in the rec room I have a 46" LCD HDTV.
I'd like three things.
1. I'd like to rent movies from iTMS (can't in Canada); and buy/rent American TV shows from iTMS (can't in Canada)
2. I'd like to be able to watch video files in the rec room that are on my iMac. (Currently I burn them to a DVD and watch them on my DIVX-capable DVD player, but the image quality ain't great.)
3. I'd like to be able to browse the web from my rec room
Trying to decide if I want an Apple TV or something else (like a Mac Mini). Here's my thinking:
Apple TV, PROs: awesome interface, HDMI out, can stream video files from my iMac or a hard drive on my Airport Extreme base station.
Apple TV, CONs: no movie rentals in Canada yet, no American TV shows in iTunes store in Canada yet, have to convert DIVX files to Apple TV compatible format, cannot browse the web with it
Mac Mini, PROs: can use Front Row to watch video files, can use Safari to browse the web in my rec room
Mac Mini, CONs: more expensive, no HDTV and 5.1 audio out
So my questions are:
Q1. is there any chance that Apple TV will provide me with access to the Safari web browser any time soon?
Q2. is the video output on a Mac Mini to my 46" LCD good enough; or is it crap compared to the HDMI out on Apple TV?
Q3. will iTunes store sell America TV shows in Canada soon?
Q4. will iTunes store rent movies in Canada soon?
Q5. will Apple TV support DIVX files soon?
Q6. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret getting the 40Gig version?
Q7. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret it because there's going to be a new PVR version of Apple TV next year?
ANY HELP OR OPINIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS,
slegge

Here are my stabs at answers
1) Probably not. This can be done but you'd have to hack it which isn't suggested.
2) It's the same output. The only difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI carries audio as well. A mini outputting at 1920*1080 will look as good as an ATV outputting over HDMI.
3 + 4) Who knows. My guess - unlikely.
5) Not likely. You'll need to pick up something such as Visual Hub to convert files to ATV format. On the other hand, a mini can play these files already.
6) That depends on how often your computer is on. In my case I own the 40 and don't mind it a bit - my mac mini is always on so it can stream anything from my mini to my Apple TV over my network. Streaming movies takes about five seconds to get started but after that I've had no trouble.
7) That's a possibility given that they've submitted patents for an idea such as that - but remember many patents never turn into anything.
Basically I think the mini vs. Apple TV comes down to $$$ and how badly you want to rent HD movies. A mini (via Front Row) can do anything an Apple TV can do plus a whole lot more (play many more formats, higher resolutions, etc.). The only thing it can't do is rent HD movies. I would have sprung for another mini if I could have afforded it.

Check your audio out and Dolby digital settings, try restarting the Apple TV by removing all the cables for 30 seconds.

The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.

  • Apple TV/Time Capsule/Mac Mini question

    Ok here is the setup.
I have a Mac Mini running iTunes with a wired connection to Time Capsule. I have an Apple TV wireless connected to the network and stream content from the Mac Mini.
    1) The Mac Mini will not see Apple TV is I hook Apple TV with a wired connection - only wireless. Any idea why a wired connection won't work?
    2) Apple TV loses connection several times a week to the Mac Mini. Any reason why it can't hold the connection?
    3) I only want to stream content from the Mac Mini to the Apple TV, I don't need to sync. Is there any easier way to set the iTunes to stream not sync. It is a pain having to set custom sync and then go through each tab and de-select sync.
    Thanks for any info.
    Jeff

    1) I have a cable modem and I am using the Time Capsule for the wireless, so I believe everything is on the same subnet. Not sure why the Mac Mini/iTunes won't see a wired Apple TV.
    What is distributing IP addresses
    2) Not sure, what would be causing the interference, but I will check it out. I would prefer to run every wired, but haven't been able to get iTunes to see the Apple TV wired.
Interference can be caused by a nearby network on the same channel (or in some cases a neighbouring channel), and household items such as a cordless phone or microwave.
    3) I am using my primary library on my Mac Mini and streaming it to the Apple TV. I was just wondering if there was an easier way to select to stream items. Seems like there should be three options: 1) Sync, 2) Custom Sync, 3) Stream.
There is no stream option since by default everything that isn't synced will be streamed (with one exception, See This)

  • I want to buy new model of mac mini

I was hoping that the delay is because of a redesign like they did with the mac pro, I have some ideas about it like mac pro mini or mac mini pro, who knows what they will call it.... Intel iris pro graphics would be nice but a nvidia 780m graphics chip would be better..... It should have thunderbolt 2 also....... I have an old six year old macbook whith os mavericks and want to upgrade to a new mac mini whenever they release it this year or next..... I do have one question about audio.  My macbook is only cabable of 96khz and 24 bit audio through the optical out and audio in but would like to use 192 khz and 24 bit audio for recording vinyl masters and for external microphone recordings.  Does the current mac mini do this?

Late 2012 Mini (the current one)
    Audio in/optical audio in port
The Audio In port accommodates both digital optical input and analog audio input.
Analog audio line input is accepted through a 3.5mm mini phone jack. The sound input port accepts line-level stereo signals up to 24-bit stereo 44.1-192kHz sampling rate. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.
Optical audio input is SPDIF format and uses a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter, accepting up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-96kHz sampling rate.
    Headphone out/optical audio out port
The headphone/line out port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output, use a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug. For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone or a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter

  • Apple and the1.5GHz Mac mini (2005)

Does anyone know why Apple hasn't officially told customers about the 1.5GHz Mac mini (G4) until they find out about it themselves by buying a Mac mini "1.42GHz" and discovering that it is actually 1.5GHz. Has Apple ever mentioned a 1.5GHz Mac mini (2005)?
    Apple Mac mini (2005)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   PowerMac10,2: 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, BT/AE...

    Hi Nick,
    Apple has,
Hope you appreciate this, it took a while to dig it out.
Macworld December 2005 page 26 News In Brief:
"Apple Secretly Bumps Up Mac Mini"
"In response to reports on the internet that some users who purchased a 1.42 GHz Mac Mini received a 1.5 GHz system instead. Apple confirmed that "some Mac Mini systems may contain components that slightly exceed the published specifications. There are no changes to the published specifications or part numbers." "
FYI We got a 1.5GHz Mini at the beginning of November '05

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

DVD-R media that is single layer has 4.3 GB formatted capacity.
DVD+R DL media has 7.8 GB formatted capacity.
DVD-R double sided has 4.3 GB on each side.

  • Plugging apple Flat screen in mac mini.

I have just ordered a mac mini and want to plug and 'older' mac 17 inch flat screen into it, the clear bezel one, i.e. the flat screen which was out just before the current range.
It occurs to me this has an ADC connection, would I be right in guessing the really stupidly expensive adaptor apple offers is the only way to hook this up?

Unless you can find a cheaper 3rd party alternative, yes you do need the huge (apparently it's as big as your mini) and hugely expensive Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter. The unfortunate part of ADC is that the video component is no more than s-video.

  • I need help networking a ibook color series blue se with a mac mini please

Ok i need some help let me explain:
I just purchased a blue clamshell g3 366mhz here are my specs:
    powerpc g3 clamshell 366mhz
    apple airport card
    40 gig hard drive
    512 megs of ram
running mac os x tiger 10.4.10 (by the way no issues running mac os x tiger if you upgrade ram and hard drive)
I also own a intel mac mini here are it's system specs
    intel mac mini 1.6 ghz
    1.5 gig's ram
    250 gig hard drive
running mac os x tiger 10.4.10
So here is what i would like to do
    I own apple's ilife 08 and 06 and i purchased a 05 installation disk from amazon.
I use the ibook as photograghy storage while i am out shooting nature shoots and wedding's
I have installed in this order.
    adobe photoshop cs
    adobe illustrator cs
    adobe indesign cs
iphoto 06 (yes it does work on g3 computers
i movie 05 (yes it works as well)
but i really need to be able to network the two machines to each other so i can transfer photo's from one machine to another. How do i do this????
Is there a way to do this with the airport cards????
Do i need to purchase software from apple???
    If so what???

You can use Ethernet or AirPort or even Firewire.
The fastest way to transfer photos is to boot the iBook into Firewire Target Disk mode. The iBook will then act as an external FireWire drive. You can then drag files from the iBook to the Mac mini.
For other options, you can find details on making a network for file sharing in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard on Mac Mini Core Solo CANNOT be found !

    Hi,
My Apple Wireless Keyboard (non-aluminum)was working perfectly with my Mac Mini core Solo. I had to change the battery and after that I cannot connect to my Mac Mini.
    I tried:
    1. Update the Bluetooth software (from the downloads from Apple.com).
    2. Remove all the keyboard definitions in the System Preferences, Bluetooth.
    3. When I try to connect by selecting Keyboard in the Bluetooth Assistant, I won't get any device.
    4. When I try to connect to any device in the Bluetooth Assistent, I'll see the only Apple Wireless Keyboard I have, but then pairing failes.
    5. Only by using a USB keyboard I could enter my MacMini.
    Questions:
    a. How all of a sudden this can't work ?
    b. How to I "reset" the keyboard ?
    c. What can I do ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rokesh

i am having this exact same problem. Keyboard isnt seen if I select "Keyboard" in the bluetooth setup assistant, but if I select "Any Device" then after a moment "Apple Wireless Keyboard" shows up in the device list but it will refuse to pair, saying it doesnt have any configurable services.
Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Wanting to run CATIA v5 on Mac Mini (late 2012)

Hi so I'm new to Mac but I love my Mac Mini. I'm an engineering student at my university and they are offer a free student edition of CATIA v5 if you are enrolled to the College of Engineering. I found out that it only runs on Windows OS but then found out about this Boot Camping thing. Looks relatively straight forward from reading through the instructions on Apple's site and on my Mac. I will need to put on Windows 7 64-bit to run CATIA as Windows 8 & 8.1 are not compatible. I've seen a software called Parallels at Best Buy and read about it too here in the forums.
First I was wanting to know if anyone knows which would be easier (Boot Camp/Parallels) and run more efficiently for the type of software I am wanting to run in CATIA v5.
Secondly I was wanting to know if anyone has tried to use CATIA v5 on their Mac's and what troubles they have ran into or any pointers they might have.
    My Mac Mini's Specs:
    2.6GHz i7
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3
    Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024
    1 TB SATA hard drive
    I appreciate all input!
