Help! Do InDesign PDF security settings work as DRM?

I'm using InDesign CS5.5 and am about to publish my first ebook. I thought that the security settings available when I export my file as an Interactive PDF worked as DRM/copy protection. But in the InDesign manual, Adobe suggest that setting restrictions for printing and copying the PDF are useless unless you also require a password to open the document. Which of course, I don't want to do: I'm planning to sell the PDF from my website.
I don't want to put up a file that anyone can freely copy and print: I think most people don't understand the concept of copyright, or that you can't lend an ebook as you can a print one. Does anyone have any advice? I've stumbled upon this problem at the eleventh hour: I want the book on sale on Tuesday, to coincide with an exhibition to publicize it.
(I've had to stick to the PDF format for this project since it consists of pages laid out to combine colour photographs and text.)

The security settings would prevent printing, and use of the clipboard to copy pieces of the PDF, but will not stop making a copy of the file in Finder or Explorer.
I don't know if ID does fixed layout epub, but if you google PDF to epub converter you'll find dozens of possibilities.

  • Removing PDF Security Settings ??

    Hello;
    1) Out of curiosity, an expert responded earlier to a post in this forum suggesting that one can remove the PDF security settings by using Adobe Acrobat (NOT Adobe Reader).
    Is that true ??
    2) If I distribute a Read-only, password-protected, Blocked PDF file:
..a. Can someone with average knowledge of Adobe products easily remove the security settings of the file ??
..b. ONLY those with advanced knowledge can do that.  Correct ??
..c. Can someone with only the free Adobe Reader unlock the file and disable the password protection ??
    3) I'm sure someone must have posted here or on the internet a step-by-step how-to !!
Password protection of VBA, Word, Excel, etc. documents are known to be unreliable, and I suppose the same can be said about PDF.
    Any comments ??
    Monir
PS. If the topic is a bit sensitive, please reply by a PM. Thank you.

    1. Correct. Reader cannot remove security but Acrobat can (if they have the password).
2.(a): I wouldn't say "average but it can be done quite easily
    (b.) Not really
    (c.)No. Reader cannot remove security
    3. Basically without using some sort of Digital Rights Management, nothing is secure. There are free applications that can remove security and other PDF readers may even ignore it to begin with.
So if you absolutely need security, studay up on Digital Rights Management and get out the checkbook because it isn't cheap by a long shot.

  • PDF Security settings

I have a form designed in ADobe Designer 7.0.
Can i send it to a client and let them use it in Adboe Acrobat 7 Professional. I would like to allow tehm to move, add and delete form fields if they wish. i tried myself but when I open the form in Acrobat tells me the security setting do not allow for document assembly, changing etc.

I am confused . . . I thought if I designed a form in LiveCycle, people could open it in reader and save it. No matter what security settings I use, they get a message that they can't save the document.
Is this something I am doing wrong, or is this the way it is designed? I can save it using Acrobat Pro, but not reader.

  • HELP! adope pdf maker stopped working after update!

i'm not very computer savy. i use adobe primarily to convert several word documents into a larger pdf file (legal document).  i use word 2007, run windows 7.  have adobe acrobat pro 9 (friend gave to me).  it has worked fine for the past year but after a recent update (within the past week) i have been unable to convert any word/excell docs into pdfs.  it gives a generic error messages that says "an unexpected error occurred. PDFMaker was unable to produce adobe pdf.  i have tried repairing adobe install (under help menu in adobe).  i have also tried to reinstall the software but nothing seems to fix this issue.  i did not appear to be limited to word. i was unable to convert excell docs.  i am able to "publish" a word doc into a pdf.  once the document is a pdf i am able to do merge files.  however if i published it, i have to arrange the pages one by one (some files are over 100 pages).  any suggestions?

Even though this was not posted 2 weeks ago, and it remains unanswered - I'm experiencing similar problems so thought I'd add to this one.
    XP Pro SP 3
    Acrobat 6.0.6
    Reader 9.5.0
    Elements 10.0
    Photoshop CS 8.0
    MS Office 2003 SP 3
Acrobat 6 worked fine, converting all manner of files to PDFs, and it even got embedded links to websites correct.
Yesterday, it failed.  From Make PDF, after opening a Word File, focus goes back to Acrobat and the active window remains gray.  The file is not created.  Acrobat hangs or quits.
I had updated Elements from 7.0 to 10.0 a few days earlier.  Thinking the installation must not have gone well, I un-installed Elements and Acrobat, reinstalling Elements first, then Acrobat, restarting the computer at every reasonable opportunity.
It is still broken.  How is it that a tried and true application from such a respected developer suddenly fails?
Anyone know what the problem is and how to cure it?
NOTE: Adobe support refuses to even speculate.  The reason:  they no longer support Acrobat 6.

  • Help! InDesign CS6 tools not working

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to CS6 on my PC and have run into some issues with InDesign. None of the tool buttons in the top ribbon or on my side menu function properly. For example, if I make a text box and wish to change the font, I can't select the font drop down menu, nor can I change the size of the type. This also happens when I create a shape and want to change size, color, line weight, line type, etc. Pages do not work either and I have had to use the bottom page navigation.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the problem did not go away. Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thank you!

  • Could someone help clarify how MAC security updates work?

hi, I'm using an application that is only supported on safari version 3.x - and I'm told if I accept the automatic updates from apple it will automagically update me to safari 4 without me being able to choose not to upgrade safari (but accept all the other patches/updates) can this be true ??
    thanks.

    J.Eaton -
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
We're all other Mac users, helping each other.
    Glad you've found us.
So, to find what OS you're using
click on the desktop screen, click on the Apple menu (top left)
Down to About This Mac. It will tell you what OS you're on.
When you're using Safari, go up to the main Safari menu next to the Apple icon,
and "About Safari" will tell you what version Safari you're using.
Report back what you find, OK?

  • Acrobat Pro 8, PDF security: Is it possible to allow printing, but forbid editing?

Hello everybody! I have a question concerning the PDF security settings. We are using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 (CS3) on an Mac OS X 10.4.11 system.
When creating a PDF, is it possible to...
...permit printing AND enable reading aids BUT forbid editing (like copying text)?
Or can I only either permit all OR forbid all?
Thank you for your kind help!
    Mats

Okay, I solved it myself. :-)
I had set the "PDF compatability" to "1.4". This removes the a.m. option. So now, I have set it to "1.5" (or even another later standard), and can now allow printing AND allow reading aids BUT forbid copying text.
    Thank you!

  • How to include security settings into InDesign PDF presets?

I have prepared an InDesign template for multiple users in my team. Ihave created a set of PDF presets for exporting PDFs to keepconsistency. I want to protect all the PDF files with password and haveto include the password protection in the PDF presets. But InDesign PDFpreset is not supporting the security tab.
Currently I have suggested the batch command in Acrobat Pro for security settings.
It would be much helpful if Adobe help me in this.

    riott.girl wrote:
Using the File>Adobe PDF Presets, chose anyone of the pre-existing Adobe pre-sets--not one that you've created.
Change the settings to the pre-sets you want, including the security settings, and then click "save preset".
That would be an nice easy solution, but there is no access to security settings in the PDF presets.

    Hi skydivingsnowman,
I'm sorry you're having such trouble using the ExportPDF service. What browser are you using?
Please try clearing your browser cache, or using a different browser (here's a list of supported browsers:   http://www.adobe.com/acom/systemreqs/.
Please let me know if that works.

  • .pdf with no security settings won't place in InDesign

A received .pdf file with no security settings will not place in InDesign.  I receive a "This PDF document was saved with security settings which prevents its pages from being placed."  Even when I save it as a new .pdf with no security settings, it won't place.  I'm currently using Acrobat Pro X.  Please advise.  Thanks!

It could be you need to restore your InDesign preferences. Follow these directions:

  • Security Settings in Robohelp 9 PDF files

I think this is a Robohelp problem because it only happens when I launch a PDF from  a Robohelp-generated site. It does NOT happen in Adobe Acrobat. It may be a conflict with Windows 7 - we just loaded it yesterday - because before that everything worked.
We created a PDF file with interactive fields, and NO security settings. The file has signature fields that populate with your digital ID when you click the red tag. It works just fine in Acrobat - you can type data into the fields, and the digital ID dialog launches when you click the red tag. If you click OK, the field displays your digital signature.
However, when I launch the file from online help I created with Robohelp 9, I get an error message stating that the security settings on the document don't allow adding text or placing a signature on it. I double checked, and there is NO security. See the attached images. Is this a bug? Should I report it?
    Thanks

    Hi there
I'm wondering if the following is happening to you.
When in Acrobat, you are viewing the document differently and able to make edits. When you are opening the PDF from RoboHelp (or more accurately, the browser) you are presenting it from the PDF reader and not Acrobat. Thus you have different capabiities.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How to make signature field work for reader users? Security settings change when doc is extended???

I've been struggling to correct a problem all week and am at my wits end. Customer service was no help as the person I spoke with could barely speak english let alone understand the problem as I explained it to him. Hoping someone here can provide some insight, here's the issue:
I'm using a Windows 7 Professional OS. I created a Microsoft Word doc and used Adobe Acrobat XI Standard to create a form from it. It automatically detected the fields, which includes a signature field. I went through fixed it all up how it needed to be and did "save as other - reader extended pdf - enable forms fill in & save in reader".
The document is a report that will be sent to a small number of people that have to fill it out, digitally sign and return and I'm assuming that most if not all of them will open the document using the free Adobe Reader. So I thought extending it is what I needed to do to make sure they could fill it out, save it to their computer if need be, and also sign digitally. The signature field was automatically added in by acrobat for me and I did not change the properties of it at all except to add a border.
When I open the form in Reader (also XI) I can fill out all the fields, save it... but not sign it. The security settings say signing is not allowed even though I went back to the original pdf form and the security settings on it say allowed for everything. I don't know how to fix this... please help!!!
I've attached some screen shots but can include more if needed...

I don't have the Enable More Tools option under Reader Extended PDF. I just tried to download the XI Pro trial version and it won't complete installation because of the standard version I already have. Any advice or workarounds you know of? Going to the boss for $$ to upgrade to Pro is what I'll consider my last resort if the issue is truly that I have to use Pro to enable more tools for reader.... I appreciate your reply though. I sat here all day yesterday fingers crossed that SOMEONE would give it a go!
