Help Dock keeps reseting

So I'm somewhat new to osx (1month) and so far I really do love my 13 mbp, but I'm having one little annoying recurring problem. The dock seems to reset every time I log off. For example, I used google chrome as my default web browser at first to somewhat ease my way into macintosh. So of course I placed Chrome in the Dock. Since then I'v began to use Safari and removed chrome from the dock and replaced it with safari. Now heres the problem, every time I log back in my profile. my dock resets to display google chrome and anything I add to the dock is removed once I log off. It seems the dock is reseting itself to what I had 2 weeks prior. At first I didnt mind it but its slowly getting more and more frustrating.
I would greatly appreciate any help and thank you.

OK, I will offer one more post on this problem. And no one questions your knowledge about computers, it's just that you are an Apple novice. As we all were at one time. Different platforms do things differently
Go back to the advice that Baltwo gave you. Although you think you followed his advice, I don't think you actually did. He told you to remove the two Dock Preference files from your Users Library, place them on the Desktop, then Log Out and Log Back In. You said you only found one Dock Preference file, not two. And it didn't help.
At this point we don't know if it will help because you entered the wrong Library. You entered the System Library and you want the Library for your home folder. Open a Finder window and set it to the Column View. Click on your Home Folder (the little House thingy) in the sidebar. Then click on Library and then Preferences. Scroll down to the 2 com.apple.dock plists and follow Baltwo's instructions. When you remove a plist from the library, the next login causes a new, pristine version of the plist to be created.
Who knows whether it will help, but this is basic level troubleshooting. You may want to look up "Creating a new user account" in Apple Help. That's another basic troubleshooting tool.
Good luck with OSX. Once the kinks are worked out you're gonna love it.

  • Dock keeps reseting to its default settings. How do I get it to stop doing that?

I've been having this problem since yesterday. Yesterday, I uninstalled Norton Internet Security ( http://amzn.to/1CtjQYL ) so I can install Norton Security ( http://amzn.to/1Bu79rG ) for my MacBook Pro (15 inch, Mid 2012, Non-Retina, Runs on OS X 10.8.5). After I uninstalled Norton IS, I was prompted to reset my machine and reset it I did. After I turned it back on, I noticed that the dock was set back to its original settings. The dock was not on the left side of the screen at all. (That's my preferred dock position.) Instead, it was moved to the bottom of the screen. Not only that, all of the app icons that were not originally in the dock have been removed. (i.e. TextEdit, Preview, Google Chrome, etc.) After I finished installing Norton Security, I had to manually restore the dock to my preferred settings. After the restoration, I was hoping that this problem would never occur again. Later I opened Norton Security to use the LiveUpdate feature and after I used that feature, I was prompted to reset my MBP. I did that and by the time it turned back on, the dock was set back to its original settings again. After I noticed that, I had to preform the manual restoration again. Later that night, I had to shut down my MBP and I was dreading that the dock problem would occur again by the time that I turn my MBP on. Earlier today, I turned it back on and the dock problem did occur again. Once again, I had to do the manual restoration.
I never had this problem from before. Has anyone has had this problem from before? Does anyone know how to fix this? How do I keep my customized dock setting intact every time I reset/turn on my MBP?

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Dock keeps resetting

I recently downloaded the latest update for security and quicktime. I also cloned my original hard drive and switched over to the new one as my start up disk. Now, when I restart the computer with my newly copied hard drive as the new start up disk, the dock wipes out everything I add to it and goes back to the default settings and programs. I've done this a few times already and it's always the same result: default dock settings and programs.
On top of that, keychain keeps popping up and asking me for the password. Furthermore, a question mark icon keeps showing up in the dock. It never used to do any of this. Is anyone else having the same problems? Any advice? Thanks!

    Hi Gandolf,
You could attack each issue separately but I'd grab the ~/Library/Preferences folder from your original and overwrite the one on your clone.

  • Help - e50 keeps resetting mid-call

Hey guys, I've looked about a bit and can't find anyone who's had this specific problem so I thought I'd poke my head up and ask.  I have an e50 that was originally tied to Vodaphone, finished the contract and got it working with an O2 PAYG sim.  Now, whenever I make a call, I can get around 1-2 minutes in before the whole phone resets, sometimes preceded by a long buzz type noise during which I can't hear the caller and they can't hear me.  Although it was fairly infrequent a week ago, it now happens nearly every time I make or receive a call.  Everything else on the phone works fine.  Has anyone any advice?
    Thanks for your time,
    Sam

It does appear that the Access changes resolved the overall issue.  But while Access was chugging away, I was still seeing LAST_CALL_ET getting reset with no other obvious signs of activity.

If it was changing between FROM and TO there must have been some message coming from Access and bouncing back without an error. Possibly some sort of OCI "ping" type call that didn't involve an SQL statement.
Update:  something like a "set context" or "set client identifier" perhaps; possibly a (non-SQL) rollback or commit

  • Dock keeps reverting resetting

    Hey guys,
Got a bit a of predicament. Just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, and have had problems with the dock. Everytime I log out, or restart, the dock keeps resetting. It's not a complete reset, as the size, magnification etc. stay the same. However the Launchpad, Mission Control, App store all comes back.
I've tried deleting the dock.plist files in Preferences, and have tried the 'killall Dock' in terminal. However nothing seems to work.
    Help! Please?

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it.

  • Bridge preferences keep resetting.  Please help!

This is SO frustrating!  I just upgraded to CS4 and my Bridge preferences keep resetting back to factory defaults.  I have reinstalled the entire CS4 and I have also restarted Bridge holding down the option key and still nothing.  I have also repaired disk permissions upon suggestion from Adobe Support.
Does anyone have any tips on what to do?
Furthermore, also, in Camera Raw my settings don't take either.  In previous versions of ACR all I had to do was click the option once and everything in ACR would come up the same in subsequent openings.  For example...ACR pops up in a very small window, in CS3 you could click the "full screen" option and each time you opened ACR, it would open full screen.  Now every time I open ACR, it opens small and I have to click the screen larger.  Very tedious.  Same with changing the colorspace under each image...previously I had set it to sRGB and it would stick, however, now with CS4 every time I change it, it reverts back to Adobe 1998. Ugh.
Can anyone help?  I have been on the phone for hours with Adobe support and everyone seems to lead me on a wild goose chase with no results.
I am running Mac OS 10.5.8.
    Thank you!

The easiest way I can think of is to use your original install disk for
OSX10.5 and choose the option to archive and install a new system.
The Archive and Install option makes a copy of your old library and creates
a fresh new one leaving all the other existing files intact.
However, to be sure first make a back up of all your important files from
your user account (including the Document, pictures, music movie etc
folders) if you not already have done so (something you should have... )
First of all use the Adobe uninstaller to uninstall you CS4 copy (it should
    be in the utilities folder)
Then run the Archive and Install option from the install disk. You should
start up from this disk otherwise it won't work. When finished restart OSX
and use software update to get the latest version of OSX 10.5
    Reinstall CS4 and try again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help.

  • I book G4 Keeps resetting itself. HELP!

    HI!
My IBook G4 keeps resetting it self. I have not changed a folder name or anything. When i turn the computer off and turn it back on, it is all back to the "default" settings. I have to start each application new. Like mail. in the last hour I started "mail" 4 times and had to put all my information back in. I-tunes has to restart, but my music is still there, after it gets imported.\
Now my keychain is going crazy, too. My Safari lost my bookmarks, everything.
I can't afford to loos everything, so please help me. I looked up in the help topics, but all my folders seem to be Ok.
    Thanks.

...if the hard drive was erased the install discs are the only way to resolve this that I am aware of.
As an alternative, you can buy a copy of the operating system and the iLife product, which is most of what was on the original install disks that didn't come with your system. One source for unopened Apple software is hardcoremac.com.
However, it sounds like you can log onto the system, yes?  On the menu bar, towards the apple on the left, it says File.  If you click on that can you also click on "new finder window"? If yes, what does it show you?

  • Help! My centro keeps resetting..

My verizon centro keeps resetting when I access the webpro function and I am using the online feature. Any suggestions?
    Post relates to:

WebPro was for sale at one time from the Palm Store, and was included with the Zire71/72 also...
I'm guessing the OP may just be guessing at the name of the program.  Hard to believe this old web browser got installed on his Centro, unless a major upgrade mistake was made by the OP...

  • My Ipod just keeps resetting itself.HELP!!!!

My 60 GB ipod video just keeps resetting itself. I have tried to reset it and plug it into my computer, what should I do??
    Windows   Windows XP

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Force an app to close: Hold down the On/Off button for a few seconds until a red slider appears,
then hold down the Home button until the app quits.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If still problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
