Help doing a backup

I know it is very easy to do an iphone backup on iTunes but I really need help with this scenario
My uncle has an iPhone 3GS and I am giving him my old iphone 5 as I upgraded to the 5s
I am using my own laptop so it's not his own one where he has his iTunes library
I plug the phone in and I creates a new library just for his phone on my laptop
The options it gives me when I plug the phone in are "restore from backup" and "set up as new phone" but I want to backup the 3GS?
When I click on file and then devices, the backup option is greyed out.
I have also signed into his iTunes library if this helps and also authorised the computer
How do I do a backup?
Thanks in advance

Did you copy all your purchases to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases first ? The backup only contains the apps content and settings and not the apps themselves, so for the restore to work your apps will need to be on your computer's iTunes, other it can't restore them and therefore their content. The backup also doesn't contain music, films, tv shows etc purchased form Apple. As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download apps and iBooks (and if you are in the US films and tv shows) for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
In term of your photos, were they taken with the iPad ? If so then restoring to your backup should copy them back. If they were originally synced from your computer then you will need to re-sync them - they also wouldn't be included in the backup.

  • Time Machine repeatedly does full backups, including FileVault while logged in

So let me preface this - for months I'd hoped for a way that Time Machine could backup my FileVault encrypted account without logging out.  Last night Snow Leopard spontaneously started doing this.  I know many may think that I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, but read further and hopefully someone can help me make sense of this.
Last night I attached my external 1TB USB hard drove to my 15" MBP (spring 2010 model) running OS X 10.6.7.  It started doing a Time Machine backup automatically, as usual.  Since I was logged into my account that uses FileVault (a massive home folder - 220GB) I expected a fast backup of things only outside my home folder.  As i looked at the details, however, i quickly realized that it was backing up all 270GB of data on my hard drive - including my FileVault account while still logged in!
At first i thought i just got lucky - i'd been craving this feature for years and it just happened to me without even doing anything.  Curious guy that i am, i logged out of my acct with my USB drive still attached to see what would happen.  After FileVault cleared out space in my home folder, it did _another_ backup, that took about 10 minutes to complete.  This seemed strange so i logged back in and started another backup manually.  To my utter shock, it started doing the whole 270GB over again!
I even cleared out my TM drive, erased, reformatted, checked permissions, etc etc and did the same on my system drive, hoping that it was just a matter of broken permissions.  No change.
So there's two things going on here and i'm pretty concerned about both:
    1) Why is TM backing up my entire encrypted home folder while i'm still logged in??? Apple has clearly designed TM and FV to NOT work this way for data integrity reasons and the fact that it's happening has me freaked out a bit over the reliability of my backups.
    2) Why is TM doing full backups after each time i login to my account?  If i stay logged in, it appears to only do incremental (normal) backups but if i logout, then re-login and allow the hour to pass and let a backup start on its own, it starts the whole 270GB again.
I'm getting to the point of wiping the system and starting from scratch but since i presently live in a country with no Apple store and extremely poor internet access, that prospect horrifies me
    any ideas?
    many thanks,
    -Tim

Thanks for the input Pondini -
I tried deleting the file as mentioned in #A4 and it still had the problem.  Last weekend i finally got a brand new hard drive and reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 from scratch, then promptly applied the 10.6.7 combo update.  I purposely chose to NOT import my old user from backup and instead set up everything again manually (royal pain, but the only way i could be sure that i wouldn't bring the problem with me).  Today i whipped out my TimeMachine drive and set it up for backups.  I crossed my fingers and it AGAIN started backing up all 250+GB of my system from within my FileVault protected account.
My wife's MBP is still running 10.6.4 and i'm beginning to wonder if his is an issue with 10.6.7 since i'm relatively certain i didn't experience this before that upgrade.
I've checked my wife's exclusions under Options and her home folder is NOT in that list, yet her TM is not attempting to backup everything until she logs out of her FV acct.
In response to Linc Davis, _yes_ it was backing up my info into a sparsebundle file, not just the raw unencrypted data, which is extremely strange.
If i DO add my home folder to the exclude list, will it still be backed up when i log out?
At this point, i'm thinking my next steps are:
    1) try a different TM backup drive, even though i've wiped and checked my current drive numerous times
    2) downgrade to an older version of Snow Leopard to see if 10.6.7 is the culprit
    Any other ideas?

  • Where does iphone backup when hooked to mac

When I plug my iphone into my Mac.  It automatically backups up when iTunes launches.  Where does it backup to and can I turn this off?

Just to 'Help' and not to 'Bash', my personal experiences are that having backups enabled (both in iCloud and on my Mac) is a VERY secure and safe set of options, even if I have to select each option independently in order to benefit from both!
Having had a Mac failure and a 'connected device' failure in succession, I've been able to recover both from backups (including a Time Capsule in the mix) without ANY data-loss, solely because of having adequate backups in the 'Apple' world linked to my AppleID.
I have friends who think that Apple has some 'other' motive for backups: something to do with spying on individuals (or other mistaken reasoning).
Someone said "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that they're not out to get you!", but who is SO important that Apple would waste their time using their SERVICES to HARM any individual by spying on them?  If an individual is worried about 'others' having access to Apple, then perhaps that individual needs to think more about their possibly 'questionable' activities which might make that individual a target for the 'others' about whom they are so concerned?
To me, if a company offers a service and breaks its own rules surrounding that service then SUE THEM FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL!!  Otherwise, use the service, wisely, for your own benefit!

  • How does one get Time Machine out of a "Preparing to Backup" loop to actually doing a backup? thanks, AR

How does one get Time Machine out of a "Preparing to Backup" loop to actually doing a backup? thanks, AR

    Hi..
    Thanks for the reply..
My original I Phone 5 was running IOS 6.12
My I phone 5S currently runs IOS 8..When I upgraded it, it had IOS 7 on it which made the I Photo app compatible with everything below IOS 8...( which the photo app is not compatible with ) so I just connected the I Phone 5S to my computer and thinking the new phone had IOS 7 on it that these was nothing to worry about..I thought all 900 + pictures in the photo stream would transfer but somewhere in the process, I Tunes decides to just go and install IOS 8 which requires that you run a " Photo Migration App" to transfer photos from IOS 7 & below. The problem was is that I didn't want IOS 8 on my new 5S so I thought I wouldn't have to do that part..
Anyway the phone emerged with IOS 8 on it and the only photos that remained were the ones that were actually on the phone..The 900 + I had in the stream didn't transfer because the Photos that works on IOS 7 and below isn't compatible with IOS 8..I guess you have to use the photo migration app that comes with IOS 8 & I phone 6..But I didn't ask to upgrade to IOS 8...It just did it on it's own!
I still have the I Phone 5 Back up that I did just before giving it back to Verizon but if I try to restore the I Phone 5S running IOS 8 those photos in the stream will not go back on the phone because IOS 8 isn't compatible with the I Photos" that ran on IOS 7 and below..
So I have an I Pad mini that runs IOS 7..should I try and erase it...and put that I Phone 5 backup on it and pray the photos that were in the stream come back on it so I can transfer them back to my computer...then erase the I pad mini again and restore it using it's original backup that I have on the computer and the in the cloud?
I know this sounds confusing but I'm at a loss as to what to do..This is what I found ...http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201386
    but it doesn't help me..

    Hi,
You need archive log to do database restore to a point in time. But for that you need to have level 0 backup (FULL BACKUP) of the database. Oracle then usage the FULL backup and archive log to roll forward to the point in time you want to recover the database. It looks like you do not have FULL backup as well. So my advice will be to delete these archive logs and when you get a change. point the archive log destination to another directory and restart the database. Then take a complete Level 0 FULL backup.

  • Music on my phone does not show all the iTunes artwork, even after doing a backup restore, eliminating all music and restoring

Music on my phone does not show all the iTunes artwork, even after doing a backup restore, eliminating all music and restoring  I have an iphone5 64 syncing about 8000 songs, so updating all is a time consuming, and now maddening process. Never had a problem before iOS 8. Someone (hello Apple) needs to develop a utility to help manage artwork recovery.

  • Time machine not doing incremental backups - instead doing full backups

    hi,
Time machine does a complete full backup, and then instead of doing incremental backups, it wants to keep doing full backups.
    help.

why do you think it's doing full backups?
install TimeMachineBuddy widget and see exactly what it says. also install TimeTracker and see what exactly is being backed up every time
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
but first, verify both the internal and TM drive with disk utility. verify disk, not permissions. if it reports any errors repair both drives. you'll need to boot from the snow leopard DVD to repair the main startup drive.
also, see Pondini's troubleshooting tips at the top of the TM forum.

whenever m tryin to backup my phone it starts and after consuming the space on the hard drive of computer it stops after the msg saying bakup could nt b saved on the computer.. so my question is where does the backup get saved on d computer  n how to access it n hw to clear the old backup history n free the space on the computer? help plz...

    WHERE ARE BACKUPS LOCATED
ITunes stores one active backup and each time a backup is created the old backup is overwritten.  Icloud saves the last three backups.  You cannot view the backups unless you have special software to read it.  If you want to know where the backups are located on your computer then read this article

My Iphone still hanging for 9 hours while doing security backup for actualization... Can anyone help?? And also cannot find backup file..

Now it's Wednesday (2 days since I originally posted) & my iPhone appears to have finally restored all my apps, but it still says it's restoring from iCloud backup.  If all my apps are restored, what else could it be restoring?  IS it actually restoring anything at this point, or is it still in 'glitch' mode???  I've tried turning it off & back on & it continues to say that it's restoring.

  • What does iTunes backup when you connect your iPhone

    Hi,
Can someone help me to understand the following two folders.
I have been using the iPhone since when it first came out (2007) and syncing with iTunes, one thing I havent understand is what is iTunes actually backing up when you connect your iPhone, does the backup contains everything in your iPhone?
In other words does the backup contains your iPhone apps, photos etc.?
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The other folder I don't fully understand is the "Mobile Applications" folder, the reason for this question is because I relocated my default Media folder to an exteranl HD and when I sync my iPhone everything is fine I haven't had any problems but when I go and open this folder it has only a few apps but my iPhone has a lot more.
Why the amount of apps in my "Mobile Applications" folder doesn't match the amount of apps on my iPhone?
Can someone tell me what is this folder for?
    ...music/Media/Mobile Applications
    I'm currently running, iOS5
    Thanks a lot!

  • Brand new to Mac, does TM backup all users files, even when not logged on?

Hi Im brand new to Mac so please be gentle with me!!
Im about to use TM for backup, I have an account and have made one for my wife, as we both have an iPod and so Ive herd its easier to use 2 accounts.
She wont be logged on much, so if when Im logged on does TM backup the whole HDD, rather than just the user that is logged on?
if not how does it work to backup everything? do you have to keep logging on?
    cheers

I have no idea what question the Apple person THOUGHT he was answering, but Time Machine backs up changes for everything in /Users (i.e., for all accounts) whether or not an account happens to be logged in at the moment. Just tested and confirmed.
    THE TEST:
My Powerbook has an Admin account a Standard account and the Leopard Guest account.
I Restarted the machine, logged in as the Admin account, and turned off System Preferences / Time Machine. I then created a Text Edit file on the Desktop.
In Time Machine I verified that this file was visible in the current view of the Desktop but not in the immediately prior backup.
I then logged out of the Admin account and logged in as the Standard account.
I turned on System Preferences / Time Machine and did a Back Up Now. I then turned off System Preferences / Time Machine again to insure no further backups might happen.
Of course the Standard account can't see into the Time Machine backups of the folders from the Admin account, so I logged out of the Standard account and logged in again as Admin.
Looking in Time Machine, I now see the Text Edit file both in the current view of the Desktop and in the backup just completed by the Standard account.
I turned System Preferences / Time Machine back on, and deleted the test file. Looking again in Time Machine, the test file is no longer in the current view of the Desktop, it IS in the immediately preceding backup (the one that the Standard account initiated), and is not in the backup prior to that.
    END OF TEST
This makes perfect sense since the file system event logs don't care whether a user is still logged in. Nor would a Deep Traversal backup care.

I have created a lengthy slideshow with music on my MacBook Pro under Iphoto.   What steps do I need to take in order to burn a DVD copy of this slideshow?     "Help" does not offer info for this transaction, only if you want to export to another Apple device and it shows that you must first export to Itunes.  Can anyone help me with information on just copying to a DVD?  I don't want to email it or show it on another Apple device.  I want to be able to burn multiple copies on DVDs as a gift......    Can it be done?   I'm not real computer savvy
