Help DVD Stuck

I have tried restarting and other suggestions for getting a dvd out.
I need help to get the disk out.
Thanks

I had the good fortune to get bumped up to a higher level AppleCare tech, and he had a fix that worked for me.
First, try the things posted in other suggestions and the tech notes, e.g. restart with touch-pad mouse button held down. If the disk does not come out, this suggests that it is physically stuck rather than a software issue.
Then,
1) Restart and hold down Option until the system brings up the boot manager. (If your stuck disk is bootable, it should show as an icon. If it is not bootable, you will not see any indication of the disk, but the eject key will still function.)
2) Wait for the cursor to change from the spinning watch to the normal arrow.
3) Press the Eject key and hold it for a few seconds. The system will try to spit out the disk. If it is still stuck (it probably will be) wait until the system has finished spinning it before trying again.
4) Take a new paper match book and open the cover. Use the flat cover (the part without the matches attached!) as a thin shim.
5) Your goal is to slide it slightly into the top center of the drive so it will slip above top of the disk and make a smooth ramp to guide the disk down past the top edge of the slot.
6) Press eject again. If you have the matchbook just right and are lucky, the disk will eject.
Caveats:
--DO NOT stick the thin cardboard deep into the drive. You only want to get above the outer rim of the disk to give it a path out. 1 or 2 cm insertion seemed enough. (But the tech said he had used this technique to eject a mini-disk! Caution, because as you go deeper, there is probably more risk of jamming up a vital part of the drive.)
--Any thin strong piece of cardboard should work, as long as it is not too frayed on the edges. I started with a new match book, and it worked easily. After several tests with various disks (which showed that my problem recurs intermittently, rather than just being one bad disk, rats) the corners of my matchbook became delaminated slightly and curled. This made it much trickier to get the disk to glide out, as it caught on the corners of my matchbook. Maybe a thin glossy business card?
-- DANGER! DO NOT USE TOO THICK or TOO STIFF a card. The tech agreed that a credit card is too thick or stiff, and could damage the drive (this warning also comes from sad experience reported elsewhere in these forums)
--The matchbook technique also seems to work from the finder. I believe the tech had me do the "Option Boot" step because the system seems much less fussy about trying repeatedly to eject a disk from there than from the finder.
--The tech told me to try sliding the card above the disk. From his suggestion, I assume that disks generally catch on the top of the slot rather than the bottom. Or, perhaps the danger of hitting the lens assembly is greater if you slide under the disk? Top worked every time for me.
--My stuck disk showed up in the finder, and reappeared after each eject attempt. Thus, the system definitely knew it was there, and my drive was working fine except for the eject. If your drive is dead, all bets are off.
This is not a permanent solution; they are sending a box to return my system for repair. But I was happy to be able to retrieve my disk, and also test other disks.
Maybe a matchbook or business card will become the new paper clip.

    Hi Minchroadster
Open Disk Utility and select the DVD's image in the left column, then go up and hit the blue eject button. If for some unknown reason the DVD's image is not shown in Disk Utility, restart your Mac holding the mouse button to eject the DVD.

  • DVD stuck in drive ... tried everything...

I have an older (2007) Macbook Pro with a DVD stuck inside of it.
I have tried to force eject by using
    Terminal commnand
    Restart holding mouse / trackpad
    Restart holding EJECT
    Restart holding OPTION
and even downloading DISK EJECT app.
    None have worked.
The DVD does not show up on my desktop nor in any application.
When I attempt to burn a disc in iTunes (to see if it sees a disk in the drive) it tell me that there is no burner or software.
When I start up the macbook I hear the disc spinning in the drive but when it gets to my desktop screen, it spins down and never can be accessed.
This is an important DVD disc with files on it I need.  can anyone help with this?

you need to take it somewhere to have a professional look at it if none of the following steps work
    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

I have a dvd stuck in the drive and as I can not boot is there a way of removing the dvd ?

Boot with the option key down.  You will see a window showing all the bootable systems.  Select the OSX boot and hit return.  Once you are booted into OSX, use the Startup Disk system preferences to change your default boot volume.

  • DVD stuck in disc drive

    Hi everybody,
I currently have a DVD stuck in my disc drive. I fell asleep yesterday night watching the DVD using the "DVD Player" application that is the default for playing a DVD. When I woke up, DVD Player wouldn't quit and I had to force quit the program. I didn't use the DVD Player for the rest of the day, but in the evening, I tried to reopen DVD Player to finish the DVD. It said: "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]" I tried to eject the disc by pressing the "eject" button on the keyboard, but that did absolutely nothing. Now the DVD is stuck in the drive, not showing up on my computer, and I am not able to eject it. What can I do to get it out?
    Thanks
    -Marsha

Apart from the fact that you would need to use the mouse button, rather than the MBP's trackpad button, no, it shouldn't make any difference. Try shutting down the Mac (rather than restarting), then booting it up again while holding down the primary mouse button.
Another trick is to start up Disk Utility and , if the disc is visible, eject it from there.
Sometimes, if the problem is actually due to the drive itself not being recognised as present, a "PRAM reset" will make it appear again.
On PowerPc Macs you can achieve the same result using "open firmware" commands, but unfortunately these don't work with the Intel models.
    Cheers
    Rod

hey guys, so I have a DVD stuck in the CD drive on my mac. It reads it as being in there, but I cannot eject it and it is causing my a lot of issues with my mac. If i try to eject it, Finder acts up and I have issues saving projects or even browsing files. I feel like it interferes with iPhoto as well because it says it is locked and I have no rights to view it. I wanted to see if anyone else had/s this issue and how you fixed it before lugging it into the apple store and being without a computer for a few weeks...

  • I have a DVD stuck, drive is missing also.

    Hi There,
Not only have I managed to get a windows made DVD stuck in my internal drive, the drive icon is missing also. i did a brief search around to find ways of removing it,
    * press the eject key (duh)
    * hold down left mouse (track pad) and cycyle power (duh)
    * seems to me these won't work if lion doesn't acknowledge the drive lives eh?
Maybe I'm a PC after all.
It worked fine yesterday. Just put in this old D9 I had found and
At least if I try to put another disk in there it won't load, so I'm 99% ertain it's stuck.
    * also tried holding command  key + eject
    Bright ideas anyone?
    Advance thanks.

    Hi ormerlypcguy:
Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones.  There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices,  I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
    .....   Try this:
    1) Power off your mac pro.
    2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
    3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
    4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
    5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one!   Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
    6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
    7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
    8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
    9) You are done!
    10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.
