Help! dvd won't play in dvd player or on mac!

this is my first imovie creation. it's just a slideshow in imovie, that i've exported to idvd to burn onto a dvd. i have an external dvd burner, so i am saving as a disc image, and burning the file that creates. the problem is, once i burn the disc, the dvd does not work in my dvd player, on my mac, anywhere!
i've never done this before, but i think i have all the settings correct. should i be doing something other than burning that disc image file? many thanks for any answers or help!!!

not on my dvd player
Your player would be considered pre-historic by today's DVD standards. I had a Sony of that age, which I gave to my neighbor. My friend had the same model and some of my DVDs played while others didn't. Seemed it didn't like some brands, like TDK. Since you're new to this, I'll give you the following "blurb" that should help you make some media decisions. You can take your DVD to a store and try it and buy a new player. I'd avoid Toshiba based on my experience with friend's players...
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), RiTek 4X; Verbatim 1-8X, RiData 8X, and PioData 8X, all white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData checked out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood Office Depot store, or:
http://www.taperesources.com/
http://www.newegg.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
b Here's some discussion about formats: http://www.macintouch.com/dvdproblems5.html#oct03 Be sure to read Joel Lingenfelter's experience
Here's a great site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

  • Transfering a video from my DVD player into my MAC (IMOVIE)?

How can I transfer a video, which I can play my DVD player into my MAC (IMOVIE)?

    Hey Doug,
    Thanks for responding.
Here's the deal: I have a Sony Camcorder (that records on a small hard disc), which I'm borrowing to capture about 4 minutes of footage. THe Sony DOES NOT have a firewire port. So I thought that MAYBE I could play the dvd on a dvd player and transfer he footage form the dvd player to my MAC.
But jnow I'm wondering, even if I could, would htere be any "code" or encoding problems, since it is coming from a minidvd camcorder rather than from a minidv camcorder.
Maybe the best solution is just find a minidv camcorder and capture the footage on that (I just have to fiond one).
    Thanks,

  • MP4 H.264 video won't play in Flash Player

I am using a Mac Book, OS X 10.8.5; FireFox 32.0.1; Flash Player 16.0.0.305.  I am trying to play video (MP4 H.264 format) that works on VLC, Quicktime Player & Real Player but won't play through Flash Player.  Why?

I'll take a look at the GPL sources to see how the firmware encodes the video output, I think the mpeg encoder might be built into the firmware's Linux kernel (instead of a stand-alone encoder program), I see references to the IBM mpeg2 headers but I'm not sure. But honestly addressing this possible bug is not the first thing on my todo list, but I do fidn this report interesting enough to merit investigation.
May I ask what you are using for the Samba server (aka windows shares)? Do you use your desktop PC, or perhaps a NAS server?
As an interim thing to try, I advice you install VLC media player to view the files, or to use VLC to examine the media files properties to see what you can findout.
IF you must use Windows media player, then I suggest you look into the combine community codex package.

  • DVD won't play in ordinary player

    Hi,
I'm quite new to the whole process of creating DVDs, so I tried using iDVD but it's a terrible program so Iäm trying to use DVD Studio Pro without knowing much about it. I've burned a DVD using it and it won't play on an ordinary player. It simulates fine in DVD Studio, and it plays back fine on the computer, but simply doesn't register in any DVD player. Can anyone suggest any reason why this might be the case?
Thank you all in advance for your help!
    Kinkersnick

Thank you for such a quick reply! Ok, so here's a bit more information. The DVD is actually only a single video (of about 60 mins.) which has the first play set to it - the little disc with play arrow on it in the graphical display. The disc is an SD DVD not an HD DVD (first, and only, thing I thought would be the problem). Here is a copy of the burning details:
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘WIMWENDERS.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.

    Simulation mode is off
    Lossless linking is on
    Number of layers is 1
    Doing side 1 of 1
    Playable in region 1,2,3,4,5,6,8
    Disc size is 12 cm
    Disc has no copyright material
I don't know if any of this is relevant though. I#m confused as to what the two errors at the beginning mean... perhaps they have something to do with the problem???
The media used is DVD-R and has been tried in 3 different players, all relatively new, which suggests to me it's unlikely to be the media.
I'm at a total loss here, so I would appreciate any and all help!
    Thanks in advance,

  • Burned DVD won't play on outside player but OK with Toast

    Here we go again!
After scanning the other posts I still cannot find anything to make my problem go away.
Situation: New G5 Quad and all of HD Suite installed.
Have gone through DVDPro advanced tutorial OK.
    Burned to Memorex DVD-R media.
Plays great on G5, and a G3 that I still have, with DVD Player app.
But after trying disc on 3 different outside players they still come up with "unreadable disk" or "bad disk".
Players are relatively new - one mf'd within the last year in a TV combo, and the other, my favorite, Apex AD1200.
I figure if something will play on ANY machine, it will play on the Apex.
I have burned the same file to Toast 7 using the DVD Video from VIDEO_TS option and have been able to play it on my Apex with no problem.
However, inserting this "Toasted" disk into my computer gets me everything except the audio.
I have talked to Support and they do not cover this problem, but pointed me to a page on the Apple website for deleting preferences, which I have done with no effect, and have done a clean re-install of the application, again with no change in what I am getting when re-burning disks.
Anyone have any ideas as to what needs to be done to make this application work properly?

    GENTLEMEN -
I posted this to the BMUG website subsequent to chasing down the suggestions offered at that time.
So far the response has been ZERO . . .
At the March 20 meeting I brought up my problems with selecting the correct media for burning my DVD Pro files so that they would play well across a range of dvd players out in the real world - approaching what you expect when you buy a commercially produced DVD movie.
I’m running the G5 Quad, and have the Final Cut Studio HD package.
I am simply looking for some guidance from Apple. Is there a favorite media that has been settled on by Apple, or Apple employees by word of mouth?
One of the attendees stated that he had no problems with his machine or disks that he produced. I wish to communicate with him as to exactly what he is doing and what he is using to be problem-free.
Another attendee suggested I contact the drive manufacturer and ask what media they recommend. Problem is, there is nothing in the Apple profiler that tells me who manufactured this drive. All I can glean from my profiler is the model number, which is HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B. Other forums suggest it is a Hitachi. My own investigation yields the probable manufacturer as LG Electronics. They do not show that EXACT model number (the last 4 digits are slightly different) in their lineup, so I am assuming it is a special build for Apple. So much for that line of inquiry.
I initially used DVD-R media. This played back OK on my computer DVD player, and about 2 out of 15 other DVD players I sampled. Using the same media and file, I burned a disk using Toast 7 on the superdrive. It played fine on three players it did not play on before. I only used the ones that I had immediate access to.
When I switched to 2 different DVD+R media I got the same results as the “Toasted” -R disk.
Why is it OK with Toast on the superdrive, but not with DVDPro on the superdrive???
There is no question about the correctness of the file itself. It is the completed Advanced Tutorial for DVD Pro.
I cannot proceed with projects I have until I can be certain that I am not producing coasters for the majority of the dvd readers out in the real world. I purchased all this gear just so that I could do what it promises can be done with it.
    Some answers.
    Please.

  • Bjork has ruined DVD PLAYER on my MAC! please help!!

Long story short, finally got around to watching Dancer in the Dark and found it was region 1, so converted from the standard region 2 to 1 in the knowledge that I still had one more conversion to change it back to the 2.

Anybody else encountered this problem? I would realy appreciate some help!

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.

  • DVD won't play on anything except for my mac viewer

I exported my hdv project from final cut 5 and have burned a DVD on DVD studio pro 4. The DVD works fine on the source computer but when put into a PC or DVD player, the disc isn't recognized. What clues can anyone give me to solve this problem?
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

it gave me a warning the there was HD info in the
    HDDVD_TS
FWIW If the build folder has a HVDVD_TS folder it
means it is an HD disc and not an SD Disc, if the
folder has a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder instead it
    is an SD disc.
Bear with me. I am so new at this your explanations, simple as they seem, mean very little to me. First of all what is FWIW? I understand what you are saying but I have no idea how to resolve the situation.
Recap of what I have done.
I edited my project in 1080i. I used FCP compressor to export it, selecting the DVD best quality 90 minute 19:9 setting which gave me a video only movie project. Since no audio came with it, I went back and exported the audio as an AIFF. Then, when burning i got the above mentioned message. I went clicked on the build Icon which then gave me the option to choose the folder in question which i did. after a false start it kicked into gear and burned a disc that was readable on my TV but sputtered and jittered on my PC (Dell) a third of the way into it. I saved the burn log which I am copying below. Does this help pinpoint the problem and give you a better idea how to guide me through the process?

  • Duplicate CD Won't Play in CD Player

    Hi,
I am trying to make a back up copy of my CD's and they won't play in a regular CD player. Please tell me what am I doing wrong?
I am using Disk Utility. First I select the disc in the drive. Go to "File" then "New" then "Disk Image from folder" Hit "Image" and it saves the disc image to my folder.
Then I insert a blank disc, select the file and hit "Burn". Disc Utility burns and verifies the disc. I load the disc into my player, but all I have is silence.
There is only one track on the burned cd.
What's wrong? Can't I make copies of discs on a Mac? This was easier on the PC for sure.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Well, I've used Toast since version 8, when I got it back in 2006. It's always been faster at creating DVDs than iDVD, more reliable for burning CDs than iTunes, and comparable to Disk Utility and Mac's native Burn Utility for data and software burns.
As has been pointed out here, you can't always rely on support forums for a product review, because the people who have no problems with it, aren't posting there. You don't find folks bragging about their health in the Emergency room... not nearly like you would at the gym.

  • HD DVD Player for the Mac.

    Okay.
I got this beautiful 30 inch HD Cinema Display.
    A Power Mac Dual 2.5Ghz PP G5.
and i cant play HD DVD's in my dvd drive.
Anyone know of an upgraded DVD Drive.
A 5.25" HD DVD Drive for a Computer.
    Do they make it yet?
There producing HD DVD so why isnt there a computer dvd drive that handles it.

Your Mac DVD drive won't play HD-DVD for the same reason your old DVD player won't play HD-DVD. Its a different format.
Logic suggests that as time goes on, HD-DVD drives might become more widely available for computers but as Apple has already signed on to the Blu-Ray format, its hard to know if HD-DVD will be supported on Mac in the future.

  • Burned CDs won't play on portable player

My friend who has a PC has been burning CDs for me of spoken-word MP3s. They play fine on my portable CD player. Recently she gave me a USB drive with a bunch of MP3s for me to burn myself on my new MacBook Pro. The CDs I burned won't play on the CD player (but they will play in iTunes on my computer). I don't understand what's going on...can anyone help out? Thanks.

Yes, if your interest is only in burning CDs and you don't want to keep the music in iTunes, the process is pretty cumbersome. You may want to buy a disc burning application like Toast, which can burn all sorts of formats without your needing to import anything into iTunes.

    Ted,
As you have observed, burn speed CAN have an impact on playability of the resultant BD, or DVD-Video. Probably a greater factor is the brand of blank media used, but burn speed is often a factor too.
Unfortunately, PrE goes with the fastest combo, based on the speed of the media, and on the speed of the burner, and chooses the fastest possible. I find that a short-coming, and use other burning utilities, so that I can adjust the burn speed down a bit. Within parameters, slower is better. I nearly always go with ~ 4x for BD and DVD-5's, and ~ 2.4x for DVD-9's. To date, I have never had one returned disc, and all test fine on about six different players here, plus two multi-drives on the workstation w/ DVD/BD software players. The difference in time to do a burn at 8x, or above, is more than offset vs say a 4x burn, if I have to do just one more burn. I also only use premium blank media, as saving a few ¢'s is false economy, if I get returns for playability issues.
Unfortunately, no BD, or DVD player is certified to play ANY burned disc - only commercially replicated discs, so one is never 100% certain that a client, or family member might not have a player that plays NO burned disc. Testing can verify that a wide range of players WILL play the disc, but there could well be some players out there, that just refuse to do so, or do so properly.
From reading of playability issues, it also seems that some of the higher-end players are more finicky regarding burned discs too, and that is one reason that I test on several, from a US$ 49 "bargain basement" older unit, up to an esoteric Marantz - though that obviously does not cover EVERY player - just a broad range of players.
As all multi-drives ARE certified to play a broad range of discs, including burned discs, so long as the viewer has adequate DVD/BD software players available, the discs should play on a computer.
I support your workflow completely, and have filed feature requests for PrE to allow for burn speed adjustment.
    Thanks for the comment,
    Hunt

  • .MOV file won't play in QuickTime Player? QT Components?

I have a bunch of .MOV clips on my hard drive that I'd like to ultimately import to Final Cut Express (4.0.1) to edit (my wedding video!!). If I double click on the clip, it automatically opens in QuickTime Player (7.6.9), and I then prompted to a QuickTime Components website. I'm not sure why the .MOV clips won't play, since I believe I have the latest version of QT. What should I do?
Additional information on the .MOVE files: original format is MPEG HD, dimensions: 1280 x 720, Codecs: XDCAM EX 720p30 (35 Mb/s VBR) Integer (Big Endian), Timecode
    Thank you for your help!

Upon further research, I found that a certain QT plug-in is required to use XDCAM EX footage in Final Cut Express, which can be found on this website:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp
I downloaded the demo, but have no idea how to use it to convert my files so FCE will accept it.  Is anyone familiar with this plug-in and what to do once it is downloaded?

  • Burned disc won't play in CD Player

    Help Please!
I burned a disc in iTunes.
    The disc will play in the computer;
but it won't play in the CD player in
the car or the home stereo.
I suspect it is a file extension issue,
but I don't know how to check or change
    anything.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes Audio CD should play just about anywhere so if it's not playing then it's not down to the setting you have chosen. It may just be your players, some can be fussy about what they will read, or it could even be the CD media itself. Have you been able to play CDs you've burned before or is this the first time you've had a problem? Have you another brand of blank CDs you can try?
Another thing you could try is reducing the burn speed and see if that helps, especially of you have it set at Maximum Possible. Open iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Burning and reduce the Preferred speed down. The packaging for your CD should have a maximum burn speed quoted somewhere, go lower than that. For instance if it's 24x try burning at 16x
