Help editing 720p video On Sony FW21m Laptop

Hi I wonder if you can help me? I would like to edit 720p at 60 frames per second but my laptop is a little under spec so I am wondering if you can make any suggestions without replacing the mahine. Heres what im running:
Windows 7 64 bit
Adobe CS3 64 bit
4GB kit (2GBx2)  DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered
320gb Hard drive 7200 rpm with Serial ATA-300, 16 MB,
Processor is Intel Core 2 duo P8600 2.4ghz (3M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
The graphics card is Graphics Controller: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 - 256 MB
The computer has a firewire port and usb 2.0
I have an external 1000GB 5400rpm drive
and a 500GB 7200rpm 16mb cache Internal drive which I have a usb external enclosure for But I could get a firewire enclosure if that would help
I want to be able to edit fotage from a Canon EOS 550D at frame rates 1280 x 720 at 60 frames per second the files are .MOV with h.264 encoding
It would also be helpful if I could occassionally use 1920 1080 at 30 frames. But this is not essential
Is there any way I can edit these files using Adobe Premiere - any version? or are there any pther packages that may help?
What improvements can I make? Would it help to set up an external firewire drive to output to. Additionally an external USB 7200rpm to source the clips from? And how does this set up work?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated
Simon
Im not sure what additional modifications I can make to help edit this footage. I have looked at upgrading the processor to an I5 but im not sure if it is possible or would help.
Alternatively if this is a lost cause can anyone refer me to a cheap laptop that is capale of editing 720p 60 frame files from a Canon DSLR

I once worked in a film crew where i made a steadycam from a brick, a hinge
and an elastic band!
Im not giving up that easily.
How about if I replace my HD with a 128GB SSD to run the 64bit applications
Any SSD 2.5 Recommendations?
Then look at what I can achieve with my ExpressCard slot.
This is depednent on whether the Expresscard module is connected to a USB
slot on the board or a PCI controller. Check out the speed differences:

2.0 PCI Express <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express> mode*
5,000 Mbit/s*625 MB/sIf im running Expresscard 1.2 on a PCI slot that gives
me 250 MB/s
Thats enough to run 2 FW800 drives at the same time from Express slot.
Although I'm tempted to go for an esata dual port ExpressCard which will use
the maximum bandwith or the slot
One question, If your sourcing from one drive and outputting to another what
sort of speeds do you get from each? Im presuming the write speed of a drive
is 300MB/s or limited to 250MB/s if thats all the slot can manage. I just
want to add in the calculation of the speed reading the source dive that I
will have to account into the equation.
Im considering dual port:
FireWire <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire> (IEEE 1394b)
1600[45]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bit_rates#cite_note-firewireb-44>
1,573 Mbit/s196.6 MB/s
or
single port
eSATA <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATA> (SATA 300)2,400 Mbit/s300 MB/s
2004
Baring in mind I want to run 2 Hard drives through the slot and my limit is
(if it is)
ExpressCard <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard> 1.2 PCI
Express<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express>
mode2,500 Mbit/s250 MB/s
That would only really accommodate 1 esata drive running at max speed
Any suggestions folks?
And dont say buy a new laptop..
Thanks
Simon

Can anyone help me move video from a Sony HDR-XR550 to ipad 3g via camera connector kit?

You can use iPhoto for the import. iLife apps are integrated. From within iMovie you have direct access to iTunes for adding music, and iPhoto for photos and videos in the iPhoto library.
Or you can use the Image Capture application for the import if you prefer placing such imports into manually created folders and not using iPhoto.

  • Editing a video from sony camcorder DCR-DVD201

I know there's an easier way...the camcorder records on the mini discs, when i connect to the mac, it only lets me view the video, i need to edit it. I put all the files on a removable drive and tried to put them on the mac, (i'm so new, use to pc) any ideas?

    Hi metfan:
    Welcome to discussions!
My first suggestion would be to take the camera back and get a DV Tape Camcorder.
But, that probably isn't going to happen-right?
You will need to convert the DVD to Dv...
By converting the DVD files to something iMovie can use...

  • Help Installing Solaris 10 on Sony vaio laptop which shipped with Vista

    Hello All,
I am very new to solaris. As part of first step of learning i am trying to install solaris on my laptop, as it already downgraded from Vista to XP. Now my laptop is loaded with XP i am planning to install solaris as a dual boot.
Can anybody guide me or suggest me how to walk through the installation process.
I have encountered an issue while trying to install installing ( it is unable to detect the harddisk of my laptop, i am unable to find out the root cause i have two options in mind, 1) there is no unpartitioned space left for solaris to install & the 2) is SATA disabling.
    Help is highly appretiated.
    Thanks,
    Naveen.

    From my (admittedly limited) experience:
    1) It's not a matter of merely no unpartitioned space; the installer would still see the drive.
    2) SATA is not a showstopper. I installed on a 500 GB SATA drive on an HP XW4400 workstation that has an Intel 82801G SATA controller. However, when I first tried to install, I got to the list of target drives and the list was blank as if I had no drives. I went into the bios setting of the workstation and changed 'SATA emulation' from "AHCI" to "IDE" and then Solaris installed just fine.

  • Importing video from Sony 120GB HDD Camcorder

Looking for help on importing video from Sony 120GB HDD Camcorder.
I recently purchased a new imac (1st mac) and imported the stored video on my Sony 120GB HDD camcorder. I would estimate that this is approximately 60-80 GB worth of video on the camcorder but when I imported this has become over 800GB on my imac and basically fills the HD.
My question is - is this normal or am I doing something wrong.
    Cheers

Unfortunately the video from the current crop of High Def capable cameras use a really highly compressed file format to save video. The one most used is called AVCHD and it can really save a lot of space ON THE CAMERA if you like to shoot at the highest resolution. However to edit that video, it needs to be decompressed so that iMovie can preview it, and edit it accurately down to the individual video frame level (1/30th of a second). So the short answer is you're not doing anything wrong, those video clips can expand up to 40-75GBytes per hour of video after they are imported into the iMovie Events folders. However it is entirely possible to store the iMovie Events folders on an additional external hard drive. And that's usuallly the best solution for anyone quickly running out of space.

  • HELP!!!! Sony DVD camcorder, i need to edit the video on iMovie

hi, im using my friends Sony DVD camcorder for a project and i need to somehow edit the video on my mac using iMovie, but the video files arent opening with quicktime or iMovie. the tag on the icon is .VOB
can anyone help me figure this out??

im using my friends Sony DVD camcorder for a project and i need to somehow edit the video on my mac using iMovie, but the video files arent opening with quicktime or iMovie. the tag on the icon is .VOB
VOB files are "muxed" MPEG and as such are not compatible with QT. Even if you have the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) installed, QT is not "natively" compatible with AC3 audio. Basically you have to options:
    1) Get iMovie '08 to do a "Camera Import" which will convert the AC3 audio to Linear PCM and stor it in an MOV file container and then modify the MPWG-2 content effectively turning it into a Motion-JPEG and merge the modified video to the same MOV file container with start and/or end offsets to minimize drifet between the two.
    2) The other option is t copy the non-zero VOB title sets to your hard drive and then use an MPEG-based, third party converter like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free) with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), etc. to converte the VOB files to an "edit" compatible iMovie '08 (or eariier version) compression format.

  • Sony Vaio Laptop return to factory settings HELP

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that i bought 5 years ago.  It is very slow and takes a while to get into the swing of things and I want it to run better, So I have a 1TB external hard drive and I was going to back up all the important files and restore it to factory settings, BUT... I dont have a disc with windows on or anything like that.  So I've found that I can do a recovery partition. Will I be ok to do this without having Windows on disc etc etc?  Would this help the laptop run faster and "be like new" ?

    Hi ltc58!
Thank you for considering Sony Community!
Since your laptop is quite old and you're experiencing slow performance, performing a Full Format Recovery would be the best option, as long as the recovery partition of the unit is still intact and not corrupted. Yes, you can still try to format the computer. Please make sure to backup all of your important files on your external drive. The laptop will reinstall the Operating System and it will go back to its original factory settings.
Please follow one of these steps:
Using Assist Button: Shutdown the laptop and remove all peripherals except for AC adapter. Press Assist button. Select Start Recovery Wizard -> skip Rescue -> Start recovery.
Using F10 key: Shutdown the laptop and remove all peripherals except for AC adapter. Turn on the unit then immediately, keep tapping F10 key.
    NOTES:
*If an Edit Boot Options screen appears, press the Enter key.
*If a Windows Boot Manager screen appears, select VAIO Recovery Environment and then press the Enter key.
In the VAIO Recovery Center window, under Choose a program, click to select Restore Complete System. Follow the on-screen instructions.
The process will take for about an hour. If none of these works, then the recovery partition is not accessible anymore. You may contact Sony Support based on your location to order a Recovery Disc or use a retail version of Operating System.
For further assistance, we kindly recommend visiting our Sony Global Web site for information on contacting the Sony Support Center in your region at http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/.
Hope one of the process works. Good-luck.
    Regards,
    Vincent

  • IPad 2 HD Camera 720p Video Test Edited with iMovie

here is my video test using the 720p camera on my ipad 2.. i then edited it using iMovie.. the music was from iMovie as well as all the cut scenes and cross fades..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZyJzQ4QPe4

I am still bummed that iMovie on the iPad 2 can only edit HD video shot from apple ios devices(ipad2, iPod and iPhone). I was hoping to be able to transfer & edit short HD video clips from my canon dslr via the camera kit...but no dice.
The other sucky thing is that iMovie won't even work on the original iPad. It blows that Apple is forcing you to upgrade a year old device to use imovie...only to then restrict you to editing footage from one of their devices.
I know the iPad and iPod and iPhone are closed systems so apple can maintain control....but come on apple. You are limiting peoples creativity by being such tightwads. Like Sir Paul McCartney sings...Open the door and let em in!
The iPad would be PERFECT for me on the road if it let me edit my one HD footage instead of forcing me to use one of your ios devices to capture that footage. Carrying around an apple laptop AND my iPad kinda defeats the whole portability thang.
It's bad enough we have to stay linked to our home macs to update our iPad ios when a new version comes out. It'd kinda hard if you are traveling for long stretches like I do. My brother said it'd like being on dialysis. The iPad iPhone and iPod are all forced to connectto a Mac every once in awhile to get their blood cleaned out. :-p

  • HT5958 We are 4 min in to editing a video on final cut pro.  now my computer is freezing up.  I have heard that this is a glitch from downloading. (beyond frustrated)  is this from working from 2 external hard drives?  PLEASE HELP! =)

    PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1.  everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up.  I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us.  they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!)  We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo.  8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions)  Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????

Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though.

  • Sony VAIO laptop not recognizing video ipod

I just got a new Sony VAIO laptop. I plugged in my ipod, and it recognized it as an ipod and everything. I went to go install it, and the stupid windows hardware installation wizard couldn't install it. I have tried numerous times and it still can't. Now when I plug my ipod in, neither My Computer nor itunes recognizes it. The latest ipod updater doesn't recognize it either. However, the ipod itself has either the "charging" or "charged" icon on it. It charges like normal when connected to the laptop. I have yet to see it say "do not disconnect" when I connect it to the laptop I am using USB to connect the ipod. I have tried all of this stuff too and it didn't fix the problem: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343

After three days and countless hours that I will never get back, I finally figured out how to get the computer to recognize the ipod and work like it is supposed to. If you go to the device manager and it is showing up with a yellow question mark next to it, open it up and if it is giving you a code 28, try this.
Go to this thread, it helped me and maybe it will help you.

Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The temporary file it saves is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes. I have been able to locate the file using GrandPerspective and close out of FCP to delete it. But when I try exporting the movie again it creates the ICMMultiPassStorage file again. I have made sure my scratch disks are set to my external hard drive so I know that isn't the issue. How do I fix this problem so these temporary files are not being stored on my internal hard drive instead of my external? Thanks!

Try exporting the timeline "using current settings" via Make QuickTime Movie, then submit that clip to Compressor for the transcode. This should be faster and less painful.

  • I'm editing a video in imovie '08 and adding iphotos to the movie, but some of the photos are not showing. Help

I'm editing the video of a presentation one of my clients has delivered, I'm adding the  slides of the presentation in as photos from iphoto, the problem is that some of the photos are now showing up in the video even though they have been added. Also where photo number 7 should be it is showing photo number 12? I really need to sort this out and need help. How do I get the photos to show and show properly in the right place?
    Thank you in advance

I've got a list of things to look at and tryout to see if we can narrow down what's happening. Try any one in any particular order see if the problem keeps happening.
    1. What format are the original photos in?
    Are the all the same?
If they are different, do some work and others do not?
File formats that are “raw” may be a problem.
File size may also be a problem if they are very large files.
    2. Duplicate the project in the Project Library
Try dragging a photo into that copy of the project
Any differences? If you can import photos into the Duplicate, try copying then pasting into the original and see if the image shows up.
    3. Duplicate a picture inside of iPhoto
If you want to have a particular picture and can find it within iPhoto try making a duplicate.
Does it show up in the Photo browser? And can you drag that duplicated picture into the project? What do you see, what result do you get?
    4. Clean the iMovie cache
Quit out of iMovie. Then go to your Movies Folder > iMovie Events >  Project folder name
Drag the folder "iMovie Thumbnails" to your trash. Then open the folder "iMovie Cache" and drag the file "Cache.plist" to the trash.
This should regenerate any cached thumbnails for the project, may be helpful.
    5. Try tossing out the iMovie preferences
    Quit iMovie.
Open a Finder window to your user's Home folder>Library >Preferences folder. Find the file named "com.apple.iMovie.plist" or "com.apple.iMovieAppl.plist" and move it to the trash.
Try opening iMovie again, then opening the project and dragging a photo from the Photo Browser into the Project timeline.

Unless you're trying to tether your phone to your computer or create a personal hotspot, it won't pair with your computer by bluetooth. File transfer by bluetooth is not supported. So, you can quit trying unless you're trying to tether.
