Help erasing I Mac needed- OS lion confused!

I need to wipe the hard rive on my iMac and essentially restore it to factory settings as I am selling it and I am a bit confused about OS lion and what to do!
It's a 2008 IMac, we have an Snow leopard disc and have obviously bought Lion and downloaded it at some point. I have read instructions online and can't work out which ones to follow, Some say you can't reinstall lion if you do this and need to buy a new download? Is this the case? Others seem to say its ok but maybe this is a later mac version, then there was another method using a recovery disc (although this might not be suitable for this purpose)!
Have basically confused myself!
the computer is going to my cousins for their A-Levels, so I guess it's not as vital we completely wipe it as if it was going to a stranger however they will obviously want to put there apple accounts on it and don't want to have any of our old stuff.
If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great

You need to restore to the OS that was installed on the system when you bought it (plus and free updates) or to the last OS you bought on DVD's.
So if the system came with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard you would install Snow Leopard.
But if the system came with Snow Leopard and you bought Lion and/or Mountain Lion you would have to install Snow Leopard and sell it that way. The new owner would be responsible to put the newer OS on the system.
If the System came wilt Lion and you upgraded to Mountain Lion you would have to put Lion on it, the new user would be responsible for buying Mountain Lion.
Hope this clears up the confusion.

Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.

Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8.3 suddenly became extremely slow, need help!

Hi everybody!
I need help with my Mac OS Mountain Lion.
Was working fine with it since it got released, but yesterday suddenly it became exteremely slow. It literally thinks for 20 minutes on any operation I'm trying to do, showing me the loading spin icon. Screen freezes, everything is not responsive at all and I just have to wait for ages till something is moved a bit and then it thinks again.
I don't see anything in particular in the logs. CPU load is low, memory using is low, all temperatures are fine. I even cleaned up the stuff with CleanMyMac app, didn't help.
Checked the hard drive with Disk Utility - didn't help either.
Please help, I'm hopeless and out of ideas what's wrong with it.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing, regardless of SMART status or anything else.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Use Internet Recovery. You shouldn't need an AppleID. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
Internet Recovery will install the OS that shipped with the Mac. You can then upgrade to Mavericks if that was not it.
Do you have an App Store account? Did you ever use it to install the OS?

Help! Need Mac OS X Lion redeeming code in Russia.

My iMac is begging me to ressurect his Lion OS.
The problem is - I don't know previous owner's Apple ID who got Lion installed on this iMac.
So here is a trick – iMac with Lion Recovery HD and me in Russia.
I tried to buy Lion @ App store, but I need to have US billing adress for that (and that's kinda depressing because I'm buying just a code for download my copy of Lion OS).
Is that anything I can do?

Means just what it says. You have to login to the App Store with the exact same user ID and password you used when you purchased Lion. But how did you manage to even do that? You also note:

Back in the day, I used to use snow leopard. When Mac OS X Lion came along, I installed the GM version but it never asked me for my Apple ID.
What do you mean, GM version? Did you actually purchase Lion from the App Store when you had Snow Leopard on the drive? If you were already logged into your account in the App Store, then no, it wouldn't ask for your Apple ID to purchase Lion. It had already verified who you are.
Do this. Restart and hold down the Command+R keys to enter Recovery mode. Choose to reinstall Lion to the erased Mac partition. It will take quite a while as most of the OS has to be downloaded from Apple's servers.

Can somebody please help me? I'm having trouble with Mac OS X Lion.

Ok so, I left my screen-saver on all night, without the adapter plugged and it had died over night, I thought since it would just die on its own it won't be as bad...but when I tried to restart it, it was stuck on the apple icon and continuously kept loading. So I grabbed my phone and looked up how to recover my Mac and in which it worked, bringing me to the Utility Panel. But now, I want to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but it won't allow me, because my files are too full and I can't get back on my homepage, to delete them by the Start up disk. So, how can I delete all the files and re-boot Mac OS X Lion? Or how can I safely back up my files or more "free spacing"? I don't have an extra hard drive disk or anything. So I was just thinking about completely re-starting everything. 0 files for everything. So, someone please, please help! This is really getting on my last nerve /:

Without a backup drive to use you can only free up space by deleting files:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive

You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
Remember that must moving files into the Trash does not delete them completely. You must also Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
Beyond that you can install from scratch:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.

Mac OS X Lion to OS X Mountain Lion w/ erasing all data

Hi 2 all, I have MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 and when Mountain Lion will be introduced I want to ERASE all information including all partitions from my HDD and install Mountain Lion on fully cleared Mac. And there is a question. I created Time Machine backup and I think that this backup include in itself my previous (Lion) operating system. But on my NEW system (Mountain Lion) I want only to restore apps and photos from iPhoto. How can I restore from Time Machine backup only some informations like apps and photos?

TimeMachine doesn't have a highly selectable restore option, it's really a all or nothing approach.
I assume you want to do this for hard drive performance and privacy reasons, because if you have a SSD there is no need for performance, just privacy reasons.
It's because 10.7 will only be removed and 10.8 put into it's place if you choose to upgrade to 10.8, likely on the slower part of the hard drive, Applications and User accounts will be left alone.
So if you wish to proceed, I advise having two external backups of your personal data. One on TimeMachine or bootable clone as well as your personal data backed up on a external drive. Once you have those then proceed.
Most commonly used backup methods
1: Hold command r keys while booting, use Disk Utility to Erase (hard drive use secure erase option #1, middle selection) the Macintosh HD partition.
2: Reinstall 10.7 from Apple's severs using your AppleID and password.
3: Reboot and setup using the same user name (so your iTunes playlists etc will work) different password is fine.
4: Log into App Store and update to 10.8 and reboot, setup and don't use Filevault.
5: Install 10.8 compatible programs as much as possible from original sources BEFORE returning user files.

6: Choose to connect the external storage drive with only your files and return into same named account(s) (preferred)
7: Keep your hard drive (SSD no need) below 50% filled for optimal performance, not more than 80% filled for any storage device.
This method will give you clean install of 10.8, optimized and remain performing well for a long time if followed as instructed.
If you chose to restore from TimeMachine or Filevault, your drive performance will suffer most likely because your going to lose the optimization factor, you want your applications (and OS X) to be near the top of the hard drive for performance.

You need to back up 2 folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects which by default are located on your Movies Folder. You can always check by clicking on a clip inside Fianl Cut X and selecting Show in Finder in the contextual menu for the selected clip.
