HELP! - Error 1309 - Can't copy file over 10gig to External firewire drive.

I know this is more of a hardware issue but I know that only other final cut users would be copying single files over 10gigs.
I have a G5 that I use for video production. Video Files can be large and to back them up I got an external hard drive ( Maxtor 1-touch 200gig) When I try to copy a file on to it that is 10gigs it give me a 1309 error. I have found that other people have had trouble copying files over 2gigs over to an external firewire drive. But I haven't found any answers. Can anyone offer any advice on how to solve this?
Thanks

If you don't want to format it for the mac, you are limited to file sizes under 2gb.
Another alternative is to hook a firewire drive to your Mac and then share it with your windows machines (the program SHAREPOINTS is useful for this).
The drive can then be formatted Mac OS Extended and, once shared, the PCs can access all files without size limitations.
good luck.

  • Can't copy files from Macbook to External Hard Drive

    Hi:
I have an external hard drive for backup, works fine at the office with mssoft -- but for some reason I am told by Macbook that I cannot modify the External hard drive when trying to copy files and folders to the drive from the Macbook.
I'm thinking "read only" because I know how to change attribute in Windows - but this is my first MAC (and generally I love it).
HELP -- how do I copy to the External Drive?
    ...Dan

This drive is probably formatted as NTFS for use with the PC.
    Your options are:
    1) Install NTFS-3g on your Mac (available here: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/2010/06/ntfs-3g-for-mac-os-x-2010522.html)
    2) Reformat the external drive as FAT32 (you'll have to save the data elsewhere, then use either OS X's Disk Utility to reformat the drive, or use a Windows tool to do the same thing). FAT32 has a 4GB maximum file size limit.
    3) Reformat the drive as HFS+ on the Mac (saving the data elsewhere first) and install MacFuse on the PC. HFS+ does not have a maximum file size limit, but MacDrive is not free.

We solved this problem by going to external SATA. There are lots of choices available now, but we are happy with our FirmTek equipment.<http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/> We have been using a SeriTek/1VE4 card and 1EN2 enclosure and are very happy with the performance.
Firewire has its uses, but I believe SATA is the way to go if you work with very large files. The hot swap removeable drives are also great for security. We swap a set of drives from home to safe deposit box every week. Having a fire will alter your attitude about backups.

  • Can I install OS 9 on an external Firewire drive?

I am not sure if this belongs in the G5 thread or the Leopard thread. Anyway:
    I have a Mac G5, running Leopard 10.5.4.
I understand that Leopard will not run Classic applications.
*However, can I install OS 9 on an external Firewire drive? And just boot directly from that drive?*
I have essential OS 9 apps that I really need to keep.
I am aware of Classic emulators that run under Leopard, but that is not an option.
Any advice, insights, suggestions, et cetera in this matter will be appreciated!

+PS  I should have added for the sake of others reading this thread…+
You, Dunestrider, can run your Mac in Tiger (and hence in Classic) because, AFAIK, your G5 originally shipped with Tiger.
Others should be aware that you cannot boot a Mac with an OS earlier than the one with which it shipped, i.e. if your Mac shipped with Leopard you cannot do what I suggested in my previous post. See this Apple doc.
Also, Dunestrider, I just realised belatedly that you won't have to buy Tiger - you will still have the original Install disk(s) that came with the G5.

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • Error -36. Can't copy files from Internal to External HD. Need Help!

*So I am having difficulty with transferring files from my internal hard drive to any of my external hard drives. Especially when it comes to media files. It keeps giving me an error saying:*

*From my own knowledge, it seems that I am having an issue with the permissions of the files. I tried repairing them, but it seems DiskWarrior can't repair the files due to the fact that they are either not repairable or they are missing. I hoping I don't have a hardware issue with my HD cause it seems like the issue can't be fixed via software. I have also tried backing-up my drive with Time Machine, but it won't let me do that either. Here are the things that I have tried up until now on how to fix it, and have failed:*
    1. Reformatted External HDs to be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    2. Used DiskWarrior and did a Check & Repair Disk Permissions
    3. Tried manually changing file permissions.
*If anybody knows how to fix this, besides using the methods I have already tried, please let me know! Thanks!*

First, the permissions messages are not errors. They cannot be repaired. They are innocuous and can be ignored.
Second, Error -36 is not a permissions error. Usually it is related to trying to copy files to a non-OS X formatted drive such as trying to copy a file larger than 2 GBs to an MSDOS formatted drive. The error may also arise when the file being copied is corrupted or has a filename with too many characters or a filename using illegal characters.
The error may occur when trying to sync an iDevice or an iDisk. It also may occur when trying to transfer files from a Mac to a PC over SMB-mounted network storage.
    Error -36 is an I/O error. For more see I-O error -36 « fuzzybrain|daisychain|blogdrain.

  • HELP! I can't copy files to my hard drive

This is weird. I've had my MP since it came out and all was fine until the other day. All of a sudden I cannot copy anything to my Hard Drive! Not from a CD, not from an external HD. I can copy TO other places but not to my working folders. I also cannot copy from a DVD (where I have files archived) to an external drive I use or my HD.
Whatever happened though seems to have affected my other computer (G4 Quicksilver) which I have networked to my MP because I can't stuff copy there either. Nor can I copy items back and forth when connected.
    I've repaired permissions many times.
    Any ideas?

Verify the disk, then verify permnissions. And make sure that "Ignore Ownership on this volume" (Get Info) is not selected, or is not even present (shouldn't be for boot drive).
It sounds like an ownership issue, maybe a corrupt directory.

  • Help copying files from iTunes to external hard drive

I have a bunch of music files (about 15,000 of them) that I want to back up to an external hard drive. They are only files of a certain bit rate, so I can't just locate them in a particular folder and copy them; I need to sort them in iTunes and copy them from there. I tried to highlight all of them and just copy them, but I got the spinning wheel for a couple minutes and then the operation stopped. I then figured out that I could transfer about 1,000 at a time -- I got the tracks by bands starting with A, then B, then C, to transfer. But now I am stuck. When I try to transfer files now, when I highlight them in iTunes, the window showing the destination folder on the external hard drive disappears, and I can't transfer them. Before, it seemed like both windows were active, but now they are not. Anyone know the solution to this?

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

  • How can i copy iPhoto events to an external hard drive while keeping the pictures in the events together?

I have to transfer all of my events in iPhoto to an external hard drive.  When I export an event from iPhoto to the hard drive, it copies each picture but does not keep them in a named event folder.  I have over 14,000 pics in 600+ events to transfer and want to avoid doing it one event at a time.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

IPhoto can't do anything with any photo that hasn't been imported into its library. Its default behavior when you import a picture is to duplicate the picture in the iPhoto Library "package" file inside ~/Pictures. This leaves the original picture wherever it was, and it can be deleted, as it is now just taking up space. Everything you do with the picture within iPhoto from now on is recorded and saved inside the iPhoto Library "package".
When iPhoto is used in that default mode, you have what is called a "managed Library". The alternative is a "referenced Library". Photos in a referenced Library can be stored anywhere that is accessible to your computer: anywhere on your internal drive or on any number of external drives, flash drives, network drives, etc., etc. IPhoto will keep track of all those original files, and whatever organization, alterations or metadata you create for them in iPhoto will be recorded in iPhoto's Library without altering the originals in their various storage locations. BUT--and this is a BIG but--if you THEN move, rename, modify, delete or reorganize any of those originals in the Finder or using other photo editing tools, iPhoto will lose track of them, and whatever you've done with them from within iPhoto will be lost. Backing up a referenced library that is stored on more than one drive is a nightmare, and restoring one from a backup is even worse. So I strongly recommend sticking wit a managed library if you intend to use iPhoto at all.
A managed library can be stored anywhere. The default location for it is in ~/Pictures on your startup drive, but you can have one there and another on an external drive if you like, or you can just have one on the external drive and none on the startup disk -- as long as the external drive is always available when you open iPhoto. If you open the application and the external drive can't be found, iPhoto will create a new iPhoto Library in the default location and will assume that's the one you want to use, until you tell it differently.
To direct iPhoto to use a particular library, hold down the Option key while clicking iPhoto in the Dock to open it. You'll be prompted to locate and select whatever library you want iPhoto to open, wherever it may reside.
I have nine iPhoto Libraries on my internal hard drive containing over 100,000 pictures in all. Each library contains pictures that have nothing to do with the pictures in any of the other libraries. I never want to be able to see the pictures in more than one of the libraries at once -- if I did, I wouldn't have separated them. Any of the libraries could be moved to another drive if I needed more space on this one, but so far I've got enough space to store them all together. That makes backing up simpler.

  • Can't transfer files from a mac external hard drive to a windows hard drive

Today I went to a friends house to try and take some of his music from his external hard drive. So we plugged his mac converted hard drive into my computer, which is operating on windows 7, and my computer could not read that anything was there. So we plugged in my windows converted into his Macbook Pro, and his computer was able to read it, but for some reason, we could not transfer files from his hard drive to mine.
I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or if it could be because I am using a hard drive that I bought in China, and any information would be great.

NTFS is readable in Mac OS, but can't be written to.
HFS+ is not readable in Windows, though Apple now has a (somewhat problematic and buggy at times) service to allow Windows on mac to read HFS+ to make it easier and more convenient.
There are drivers (free and commercial) to add the ability to read and write to each.

  • Can't access files on Formatted SeaGate external hard drive

I have a SeaGate Free Agent Go external hard drive.  I reformatted it to be Mac compatible when I bought it to back up my old mac book a few years ago.  When trying to access the iPhoto library it says it's on a locked volume and to try again when I have read/write access. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permissions on my computer and checked to see the format of the external hard drive (Mac OS Extended). Any help on how to access these pictures??

There isn't an option for :ignore ownership on this volume". This is what my get info page looks like:
It looks to me like I need to change access for everyone but am unable to do so. Like I said in my previous post I formatted the drive to my old computer (which not working anymore) so I'm not sure how to get around this.

  • How do I install a bootable copy of Tiger to an external Firewire drive?

I've got a problem with my optical drive and cannot boot from a CD or DVD on my 17" flat panel iMac, running 10.2.8. I have bought Tiger and would like to upgrade my OS but want to be able to run some disc repair utilities on the iMac prior to doing the upgrade but can't run them on my boot disc.
I'd like to be able to install Tiger on my external FW hard drive, install Techtool pro on that same drive and then try to repair the internal drive on my iMac by booting from the external drive. Is that possible? Is it a good idea? Can I install to the external drive from my internal Superdrive without being able to boot from the install DVD? How should I do that?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Michael

Because you must boot from the Tiger DVD in order to install Tiger I'm afraid you are somewhat out of luck. However, with no guarantee either express or implied here's something you can try:
First, download a freeware utility called Carbon Copy Cloner from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. Second, connect your Firewire drive and insert the Tiger DVD into the optical drive. Be sure it mounts on the Desktop along with the Firewire drive. Third, open your Disk Utility from the Utilities folder and use it to format or erase the Firewire drive. If you prefer you may wish to partition the Firewire drive to allocate a partition for the Tiger DVD (you will need about 6 GBs.) Fourth, open the CCC utility and click on the Lock icon beside the grayed out Clone button and authenticate. Then click on the Preferences icon. In the section labeled "Target Disk Options" be sure that the box labeled "Make bootable" is checked. No other items should be used. Click on the Save button. Fifth, select the Tiger DVD as the Source Disk, select the partition on the Firewire drive as the Target Disk. Now click on the Clone button.
Go away for a while because the clone process will take time. Once it finally completes you can eject the Tiger DVD. You now should be able to boot the computer from the Firewire drive partition. Open your Startup Disk preference pane, select the Tiger partition on the Firewire drive from the icon list, then click on the Restart button.
If this works your machine will boot into the Tiger installer from the Firewire drive. You can then install it onto your iMac. I would suggest you use the Archive and Install option. You may find the following helpful:
