Help! external disk reader for macbook pro

Hi guys, I really need some help.
Ive got a 2008 MacBook Pro - V 10.5.8  MacBookPro4,1 using Leopard.
The internal superdrive is completely ruined, It hasnt worked for a long time, though Ive not really needed to use it. However I deperately need to update my system version and have a copy of Snow Leopard on disk ready to go and get updated.
Because my internal superdrive isnt working and I'm out of warranty, do you guys know of an external drive that will work for me? Im going out of my mind here after the guy in the Apple store pushed me into buying an external superdrive which doesnt even work with my MacBook!! (it'll only work with macbook Airs or newer macs without inbuilt superdrives)!!!!
Please help if you can, Im happy to get a 3rd party drive aslong as it will read the update disk.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks So much for Aple produce 'Just working'. I cant believe the guy sold me a superdrive, he must of known it wasnt going to work.
I guess Ive got to do another apples store run and thenn on to PC world!
Thanks for your help.

Something certainly is wrong.  Do not plug the external HHD in the MBP.  Male an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and bring the Lacie with you.

Until somebody comes up with a specific recommendation, browse http://www.mac-sales.com (OWC)  They cater for the Mac community specifically and can tell you what works with a specific model.  Not always the rock-bottom cheapest but prices are not more than many others and you know you're getting something that works.

  • External Firewire Buss For Macbook Pro?

Im involved in audio and im running an A/D converter via my FW400 that is a bit annoying as it seems to dislike networking other hardware over the same buss (i found this out after buying an external HD, connecting it via the FW800 and whenever it would read from the disk the system would crash and demand a restart.)
im planning on buying a piece of DSP hardware that runs off FW400 that will need to run simultaneously alongside the A/D Converter) i figured i would need a seperate firewire buss too do this..but how would i go about that when using a macbook pro? and would i have to install it in the computer or could i run it externally?
    thanks for your help

  • External Hard drive for Macbook Pro

    HI Guys
I have just upgraded to a MBP from my powerbook which died loosing some data.
I work with photo's video and data and want an external drive to store all of these and also to back up my whole system for recovery.
I need some advise as to what i need as there seems to be lots of options out there.
I understand that the faster the drive the faster the transfer but am less sure about connection methods
USB2 firewire 400/800 ethernet networked storage
    I have some questions
1 can you connect a drive by more than one of these at the same time say USB2 and firewire ?
2 is networked storage via ethernet and my router going to be very slow or comparable to USB2
does anybody have experience of these
3 can all drives be formatted to work with mac or do i need to look for a mac specific one.
I am looking at a 250-320GB drive size do not really need portability as anything i need to travel can go on 120gb internal drive
lastly will network drive be able to hold itunes library and iphoto library in a way that i can use them through my network or will it be to slow
    Any help appreciated

I agree. I'll add my 2 cents as well
1 - I would say you cannot use both connections at the same time. USB2 is slightly faster than a Firewire 400, but Firewire 800 is the fastest, if you can find a storage device with a Firewire 800 connection (they are somewhat rare).
2 - Networked storage will work only at 1/4th the speed of Firewire 400 or USB2.
3 - I have not seen an external drive that cannot be formatted as a MAC drive. (remember one thing about formatting drives, if you have a drive that is formated in Windows NTFS format, you (to the best of my knowledge) only be able to read from it)
4 - I would imagine that you could "stream" iTunes music from a networked drive, iTunes does a great job streaming over an Airport Express. I don't think it would be a problem at all.

  • Portable External Hard Drive for MacBook Pro

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Last week I had the 500GB hard drive replaced with a 240GB SSD. Now I'm looking for a portage 1TB external hard drive to store my photos, music, and everything else that was previously on my hard drive. I purchased a Seagate Back Up Plus from the Apple store last week after talking with a couple of different people that work there. But I'm not overly impressed with it and want to return it for something else. The main reason is that it seems to be more for backing up social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and I don't use those enough to have this matter. I'm looking for a good and reasonably priced portable hard drive that I can use to store my things on that also can be backed up with my Time Machine. Reviews for this EHD are good, so maybe I'm wrong in wanting to return it. Hoping someone can help me out with pros/cons and offer some advice on something better.

  • Choosing an external hard drive for MacBook Pro video editing?

This summer, I'll be taking an introductory video production/editing class, using Final Cut Express 4.
I own a late 2009 MacBook Pro (2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, FireWire 800, GeForce 9400M), which I'd like to use for editing at home, i.e. when I don't have access to the class video lab.
I've heard that I should buy an external hard drive, so as not to fill up and wear out my laptop's 160GB hard drive.  Google returns a tsunami of information on hard drive choices, much of it undated, and mostly geared towards pro video editors.  Overwhelming, and not that helpful so far.
For my basic needs, are all hard drives more or less interchangable?  Is one brand/model better suited for video editing (versus backups)?  What are the critical specs to consider?
I hope to continue with movie-making as hobby - and to promote my small business - but I do not expect to put together a pro setup.
    Thanks.

Get as big a firewire drive as you can afford, making sure it runs at 7200rpm.  Media files are huge:  regular DV is around 13GB/hour.  Most HD media is transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE as it's ingested, around 40GB/hour.
I've had very good luck with drives from Other World Computing (http://macsales.com/).  If you'll be transporting the drive between school and home regularly, I'd suggest a bus-powered drive, just because it's smaller.  Lots of folks in this forum swear by LaCie drives.

  • Best external hard drive for macbook pro 10.5.8?

I have a macbook pro 2008, OSX 10.5.8 (My model number is MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008) and will be upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6 soon. I am just about to order an external hard drive and have shortlisted from the link below. Please let me know if it'll run well, I was told to order 500GB and not 1TB. It seems Seagate and WD are more compatible for Windows. Will the Sony hard drive work on 10.6 as well smoothly once I upgrade? Any advice on other hard drives would be very very useful. With thanks.

hi there, thanks for your quick reply:)
I checked my disk space in my 6 year old pro and it seems I have used 80-90 GB with around 90 GB free space still. Thus 500GB might be more than enough I hope. If there's not much price difference - I could look at 1 TB.
If any external hard drive should work - please let me know if the WD below would be ok too? As it's little cheaper than the Sony I selected http://www.flipkart.com/wd-elements-2-5-inch-500-gb-external-hard-drive/p/itmdmh dqa7q3rtjq?pid=ACCDMHDQAN9EPTRS&srno=b_1&ref=134a18e1-c6e9-4870-8cff-01087274cdf 2

  • What is the best external hard drives for macbook pro?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro urgently.
I was intending to purchase a time capsule but am really concerned with the reliability concerns of the time capsules where they stop working after 6 months to 18 months as posted on various forums.
I was considering purchasing a western digital external hard drive but they also receive a lot of negative feedback.
I have never used firewire previously but am interested in getting feedback as to how useful forum readers find this feature.
In terms of size am looking for 1TB approx.
Thanks in advance for your assistance as i need to purchase one immediately and i do not have time to research fully. Make, model number and approximate cost would be very helpful as well as where i could purchase hard drive in london. I am more concerned with quality rather than cost.

Opinions vary and people have different experiences ...
I'd recommend the LaCie 1TB Quadra drive at £134 it has eSATA, USB2 and FW400 and FW800 Interfaces (it comes with all four cables) and I've found them reliable and rugged.

  • Best external hard drive for Macbook pro and Aperture

Hi, any recomendations for an external hard drive for the macbook pro and aperture. I was looking for approx 300Gb !
    Many thanks
    macphi

Personally I have had poor luck with LaCie Big Disk peformance and support and don't recommend LaCie. However I do recognize that my sample of one is statistically insignificant.
The eSATA concept is interesting, but bleeding tech edge at the moment. For a solid solution that works now I recommend FW800 (forget USB) and RAID 0 technology. I have had great success with OWC and just bought their least expensive (in $ per GB) 640 GB FW800 US$370 RAID O drive setup: <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/ME8R7640GB16/>.
Just this week OWC introduced RAID 0 +1 drives that have RAID 0 speeds but also provide mirror backups. Perhaps the very best solution but pricey.
EDIT: If you bought a 15" MBP instead of the 17" you forever lack FW 800. Go for a FW 800 or an eSATA Express Card solution when available. You could buy an OWC drive now and jusr run it FW 400 until you get an Express Card FW800 port. The OWC drive came with ports and cables for both FW 800 and FW 400.

  • Dual Display - help with Cinema Display for MacBook Pro where MB won't detect displays.

I just got a Cinema Display (a1081 20") ("CD") off eBay to use as a dual screen with my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 ("MB"). However, I can't get MB to recognize CD! I've tried power cycling both the MB and the CD with and without USB cord connected. MB won't recognize CD display in any situation. However, it is recognized in some capacity although I can't use dual display because the CD power button triggers MB to ask me if I want to restart, shutdown, or cancel.
    Any help is appreciated!!

Have you tried smc and pram resets?
Try Detect Displays in the Displays preference pane.
Does the Displays preference pane Arrangement show two screens?  If so do click gather windows and check the resolution setting of the new screen.

  • RE: eSATA express card/34 and External Hard Drive for MacBook Pro

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and do lots of movie editing. I need a fast external hard drive option to use. My internal is totally used up. Also need a back up drive.
I am a newbie and all of my info is based on googling. My FIRST QUESTION: Can I, and would it be a good solution, to use an express card 34 such as, Sonnet Tempo or Firtek SeriTek/2sM2-E with an external hard drive such as SeaGate 500GB or 300GB.
QUESTION 2: Why do so many of the SATA hard drives come without a case or enclosure?
And QUESTION 3: Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with the express card/34 and SATA external hard drives.
    Thanks alot,
    Jill Rand
And please, don't hesitate to tell me I am nuts...because I am peicing this info together without any experience at all.

    1. Yes, eSATA would be a good choice for an external enclosure with a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could use Firewire 800, but it's mostly a matter of choice.
    2. SATA drives a primarily used in desktop machines. SATA capable enclosures have made them usable outside of desktops.
    3. I can tell you from experience to get an enclosure with a good chipset. It makes all the difference in the world. Oxford is very good for firewire. Cypress AT2+ and Prolific 3507 are excellent for USB 2.0.
I have a case with the new Oxford 924 chipset (eSATA, FW 800, FW 400 & USB 2.0) and couldn't be any happier. An added bonus; it acknowledges OS commands to power down on inactivity. Link: http://www.cooldrives.com/esata-firewire-800-enclosure-case-external.html
