HELP!!! External HD / upgrade to iTunes 8.02 problem

Hi
I transferred my iTunes library to an external hard drive in Jan09 to free up space on my pc. I copied and pasted the whole iTunes folder, and checked a few songs played from there, before deleting my c/users/myname/iTunes file. i havent used iTunes since then.
I then recharged my iPhone a few times and iTunes upgraded to v8.02 (hard drive not plugged in then)
I tried to use iTunes yesterday and I went to 'edit/preferences/advanced' and changed the mapped drive to my external HD (whilst it was plugged in).
But each time I tried to play a song, it says 'the song ,,,,, could not be used as the original file could not be found'
So I transferred all my music back to my c drive, and redid the mapped drive in edit/preferences/advanced' !
But it still wont play a song!
Also I have lost all my playlists which I am gutted about.
In my iTunes folder (on C drive) I have:
- album artwork folder -> Cache, Download and Local folders
- iTunes music folder -> all my albums
- iTunes Library (iTunes Database File)
- iTunes Library Extras (iTunes Database File)
- iTunes Library Genuis (iTunes Database File)
- iTunes Music Library (XML Doc)
If I go into the iTunes music folder above, (Not through iTunes) and double clock a song it opens up iTunes and plays OK. But not if I click it in iTunes!
Any ideas what I can do to get my songs back into iTunes?! And how do I get my playlists back?
Thank you very much for your help!
Hayley

  • Help! - I upgrade to itunes 6.0 and all my music disappeared

I've had itunes for I while and I had a fair amount of music on it. My computer has been asking my for a while if I wanted to upgrade to itunes 6.0 and I always said no, but recently I did it. Now all of my music is gone except for the last two songs I ordered from the online music store. Can I get my music back? Or how can I at least not do this again? I didn't read any warnings whatsoever. I assumed "update" the program features would be updated but all the music files would be retained.

First of all, this will occasionally happen after an upgrade. Your music is NOT gone, as iTunes does not store your music, your hard drive does. iTunes only holds the file paths in order to reference the songs by. Now, you will simply need to add them back over. Very simple, do this:
Click on File on the iTunes Task bar
Click Add Folder to library and add your iTunes folder back over.
It won't take but just a second.

  • Clicking "Upgrade to iTunes Plus" causes problems

I click "Upgrade to iTunes Plus" and it brings me to my music to upgrade. I click on "Buy" and I'm getting a pop up window that says "Your iTunes Plus Upgrade is Processing" and that I'll be notified by email when and how to upgrade. So I click the OK button and the window closes, only to open again. The only way to get rid of the window, or to go back to my Library, is to force quit. Anyone else experiencing this. In my past upgrades, I click the "Buy" button and the downloads just begin.

Well, my issue has been resoled. Not sure what worked, but I went into my account setting at the itunes store and I reset all my warnings. I saw this morning that one song was available for upgrade. I clicked "buy now" and it came up with a dialogue about making sure I wanted to upgrade. I checked "don't show this message again. The download started immediately (no email shenanigans) and it properly asked if I wanted to add the song to my library or delete the old song and replace it with the download.
    Hope the fix sticks!

Additional information would be most helpful.
    - What version OS are you running?
    - If necessary, do you have any CDs to install MacOS system software if necessary?
    - What model iBook (called the "clamshell") or powerbook do you have?

  • Help! i upgraded my itunes to 7.0.2 and I can't burn my mp3's?????

I am having the same problem like many other posts as to burning mp3's on the latest version of itunes.
my itunes was working fine till i downloaded the latest version and i tried to burn some songs that i even downloaded from itunes. i am having 2 major problems:
    (1) when i try to burn a playlist that i purchased from itunes it starts off like it's going to intitalize the burn then a warning pops up stating that 'none of the files can be burned to mp3 cd' then i click on the arrow to see the reason why i can't burn and it states 'itunes store files cannot be burned to an mp3 cd'. this has never happened before i have downloaded music from itunes before and never had this problem.
(2)the second problem i am having is the songs that my itunes will allow me to burn ( mostly transfered from my personal cd's and other downloads) burn in the usual manner but the don't play on my cd player....at all. i am using the correct cd's and my stereo is playing other burned cd's fine. the stereo is not old and i don't have any problem burning other files to cd. i tried everything...i even bought new blank cd's and i'm still having the problem. what is it? and how can i fix it.
please help if anyone has any advice!!!!
    -frustrated

No version of iTunes has ever allowed you to burn songs from the iTunes Store to MP3 CD.
I think you need to change your burning setting in Preferences > Advanced > Burning to Audio CD.

  • HELP - Afraid to upgrade my iTunes!

I have not upgrade iTunes in QUITE some time, because the first and second times I upgraded (years ago) I lost my entire music library and playlists. That was then. I downloaded the few dozen songs from scratch and, yes, paid Apple AGAIN for those that I had already purchased but had not burned. Now I am being told that I can no longer download songs without upgrading, and I have HUNDREDS of songs that I am terrified will be lost in the upgrade. PLEASE, give me advice. Is there is anything I can do prior to the upgrade to prevent my library from being lost? I'm not a computer whiz, so if you have instructions for me, please give them to me like you are instructing an idiot. I'm wondering if I could purchase a memory stick and put all my music on that, upgrade iTunes, and then move the music back over after Apple wipes out my library. What do you think? THANK YOU!!

If that is the case why have I just finished reading a recent thread with over a thousand views about this same problem.
I accept that there are a lot of people who have not experienced problems but just look at these forums to see how many people have!
It is all very well saying you have not experienced any problems but I have now spent 3 full evenings trying to get Itunes to work. (and I am far from alone in this) I am relatively computer literate and have tried all the fixes suggested - still nothing.
I am just trying to prevent someone else from experiencing the same frustrations as me.
My advice is to wait until these obvious bugs have been fixed before downloading any updates - just keep checking on these forums and you will soon see when the problem gets solved.

  • HT4972 No matter which of your confusing directions I try to follow, I am unable to upgrade my iTunes to the latest version which "must be done" prior to upgrading my iPad 2 to IOS 5.  PLEASE HELP!!

Please help me to upgrade latest iTunes version so then I can upgrade to iOS 5 or 6. I have an iPad 2. Thank you.

You need to update iTunes on your computer (not the iPad) to the latest version in order to then update the iPad to iOS 5.1.1 (iOS 6 isn't released until the Autumn) - you can check if you are up-to-date (which will prompt you to update if you aren't) via, on a PC, 'Help > Check For Updates', and on a Mac 'iTunes > Check For Updates'
When you have that installed, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • Lost all Playlists in MAC iTunes AFTER Upgrading Windows iTunes to v.10.7 (via Parallels) - HELP!

I HAVE iTUNES v 10.6x installed on my Macbook Pro - been using for quite awhile without issues.  All Updates to iTunes have gone just fine.  I also use Parallels Desktop with Windows XP Pro installed on it and within that Windows installation on this Mac, I have installed many software programs -- all okay for over 3 years - no real issues.  I also have installed iTunes in the Windows, but never really used the Preferences of iTunes to use its Advanced settings to change the location of the Library to the same location of the Mac's iTunes -- the Library is on an external HD.  The use of iTunes in Windows was never really used because I never had the right location of the Library set in Preferences.
About 5 days ago, while in Windows XP, I got an Apple Software Upgrade Notice that a new version of iTunes was available for download -- Version 10.7.  Not thinking about it then, I told myself that when I finished upgrading inside Windows that I would exit Windows and while in Macbook Pro's OS X 10.5.8, i just knew there would be an Apple Software Update Notice to also update my Mac's iTunes to version 10.7 also.  That's what I planned to do while still in Windows. While installing the update to version 10.7 within Windows, I thought I'd try to set the proper location for the Library file using iTunes' Preferences and Advance Tab.  I finished the upgrade to 10.7, went into Preferences and Advanced Tab and did just that and set the correct location on the external harddisk then tried to play songs using my Windows XP's upgraded iTunes.  IT WORKED JUST FINE.
I now exited from Windows and went back to straight Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8 and tried to check for this upgrade for iTunes from 10.6x to 10.7 by going to the Apple Website and downloaded this from there.  When I then attempted to install the downloaded 10.7 (to replace/update my 10.6x) it would not install because my OS X 10.5.8 is not useable for the new 10.7.  Okay, I'd just use my tried and true version 10.6x.  WRONG!!!!!
When I attempted to open my iTunes on the Mac, it would open, but all my normal screen views were gone -- NO PLAYLISTS WHATSOEVER.  The Music folder (the Library?) was fine but all songs had the infamous "!" MARK next to each and every song -- not playable.  So, remembering the Library location setting in Preferences was the way to "reset" iTunes so the Library would be recognized and useable, I went into Preferences and reset the Library to the proper and same location as it always had been (and, where I had just previously set the Windows' iTunes to).  Now the "!" marks were gone and each song in the Music Folder played just fine.  BUT, NO PLAYLISTS WHATSOEVER.  ALL MY ORGANIZATION EFFORTS FOR YEARS WAS GONE!!!
My thoughts are that the Windows iTunes upgrade to 10.7 changed some key iTunes files common to both operating systems on the Macbook Pro, Parallels Desktop, and Windows XP installation -- some Windows iTunes program files are kept and store in the same default location as the Mac's and on the internal hard drive of the Mac.
Because, in further researching this problem, I found that the "iTUNES LIBRARY.itl" file located on the Mac's hard drive had, in fact, been changed by the Windows iTunes upgrade to 10.7!!!!!!  THOSE CHANGES "CORRUPTED" THIS FILE TO USE IN THE MAC iTUNES PROGRAM AND THE PLAYLISTS ARE GONE.  I also use this software in this effort:  PARALLELS DESKTOP VER 7.X, FULLY UPDATED WINDOWS XP PRO, FULLY UPDATE AS MUCH AS APPLE HAS PROVIDED TO MY OS X 10.5.8 (I CAN'T UPGRADE TO LION), AND OF COURSE iTUNES 10.6x.
THEREFORE, WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD/COULD I DO TO GET THE PLAYLISTS BACK INTO MY MAC OS X 10.5.8 iTUNES?  I DON'T CARE TO USE THE WINDOWS iTUNES ANYMORE -- I'LL JUST STAY WITH MY MAC'S.  PLEASE HELP!!!  THANK YOU.

  • Help!!!  Upgrading to iTunes 10.5 has destroyed all video in Final Cut Pro

After upgrading to iTunes 10.5 all of the video on my external hard drive was shot with a Canon XL-H1 and captured on a Focus Enhancements FS-CF.  The files are HDV quicktime movies with the MPEG 2, Linear Timecode codec.
Movie files that are already imported into Final Cut Pro 7 appear as white screens and will not play.  Final Cut crashes when I try to re-import them.
When I try to open them with Quicktime 7 I get a message saying "An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie."  Quicktime X won't open them either.  However, VLC plays them just fine.
I've looked in the codecs folder for Quicktime and the HDV codec is present for playback.
I'm experiencing the same issue on two systems: a brand new 27" iMac and a 17" MacBook Pro.  Both are running Snow Leopard.
I was on the phone with Apple for over 4 hours.  Ultimately they blamed my camera and hung up.
    Dear God, someone please help!

I emailed Focus Enhancements, the manufacturers of the FS-CF flash drive I use to recorde footage from my camera.  They're aware of the problem.  Here's the email I received:
Currently, there is an issue with Final Cut Pro X, Mac OSX Lion 10.7, the latest version of the Quicktime player (7.7 or any 10.0version and up) and our Quicktime HDV files. We have been working with Apple ona fix for this issue, however, I do not know when the fix will be available. The only workaround we know of at this time is to record in the .m2t fileformat and convert the footage to .mov (Quicktime).
If you are not running Lion and you have Final Cut Pro 6or 7, you may be able to downgrade your Quicktime player so your files willwork. Some of our customers have had success with downgrading their Quicktimeplayer by following the steps listed here: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/using_pacifist_to_downgrade_quicktime .html
If you cannot downgrade using Pacifist, you may need tocontact Apple for further assistance.
I tried the Pacifist route.  It didn't work.  And in my opinion, recording in .m2t and converting to .mov is a time consuming option, especially if you're on deadline.  I'm going to dual boot my machines with Leopard and not upgrade iTunes.
iSkysoft's video converter is the only converter I've found so far that will convert my hdv files.  But it pillarboxes the converted video and throws the audio 14 frames out of sync; issues that can be fixed in editing but then everything has to be re-rendered.
As far as Focus Enhancements working with Apple on a fix: don't hold your breath.

  • Upgrading / Installing iTunes 7.1 - Detailed Error Report, please help.

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my iTunes to 7.1 Previously, my iTunes was working perfectly fine. I decided to give it a try and upgrade to 7.1 and to my horror, it does not work anymore.
I am running iTunes on Windows XP.
First of all, the installation for 7.1 has NOT worked. It was giving me an error. So, instead, I just assumed that the installation had not gone through, and my previous version was still installed and would function.
Incorrect. I am now getting the error:
"This action is only valid for products currently installed."
This must mean that the upgrade installation that started (but did not finish) must have wiped out the previous installation. Darn. I go back to run the iTunes 7.1 installation to see if it works this time...
Here is where the "big" error is that I can not figure out. The installation bar almost finishes, and runs some of the installation functions (such as copying files, etc.) when it gives me this error:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK and try again, or, enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below"
It then gives me a "browse" function so I can find the correct path to iTunes.msi - my only problem is that I don't know where it is, and after a shallow and basic search through the iTunes program files, I gave up.
    Attached is a screen shot:
    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/159/424601522_fac28e3a9d.jpg?v=0
I have read that it may also be a problem with Quicktime. So, I installed my version of Quicktime, then tried to run the installation package again.
Incorrect again. Still giving me the same error message.
I then went to Control Panel, Remove programs, and tried to manually remove iTunes. During the uninstallation, it gives me the same error message - missing the iTunes.msi file.
This has lead me to desperate measures and post here on the support forums. I hope that someone will be able to help me.
    Thanks ahead of time.

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK and try again, or, enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below"
with that one, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

now try another itunes install. does it go through properly this time?

I can't upgrade to iTunes Plus.  I can download songs normally but when I try to upgrade I continue to get the error message.  Please help.
    Thank you!

If you're having problems with the App Store you might try this:
1 - enable the Debug menu in App Store:
    open the Terminal application.
copy the command below and paste into the Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
    followed by Enter.
    launch App Store, login.
2 - select the Debug ➙ Reset Application option:
    3 - try again.

  • I can't sync my iPod after upgrading to iTunes 7 - Help!

I'm running an Intel 20" iMac with all of the latest software updates applied.
My iPod is a 30GB iPod Photo (4G) running software version 1.2.1.
I upgraded to iTunes 7 last night. Since then, I can't sync my iPod. Here's what happened/happens...
I installed iTunes 7. On first run (iPod disconnected) it checked for album art and ran through my library to determine the zero gap playback info. That all happened successfully.
When I connect my iPod (which is set to auto update), it recognizes it, and show the status page (also shows up in "devices" in left pane) and immediately a small window pops up with the text "Updating library on 'Evan's iPod'". The progress bar gets to somewhere between 30-70% and then hangs.
I left it running all night and it never finished. My only option was to Force Quit iTunes. Once I did, my iPod was still fine, and had all my music on it, just nothing new.
I've tried rebooting my computer and iPod, to no avail.
I would try reformatting my iPod, except that you can now (seemingly) only do that through iTunes (as opposed to a separate updater as in the past). Since iTunes locks up as soon as my iPod is connected, that doesn't help me much...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Evan

Ok... I just tried connecting my iPod directly to a USB port on the computer rather than via the USB hub I was using and everything is fine. Odd, but I'm happy now.
