I'm having a similar problem on my PB G4 15". The screen is incredibly dim (I can faintly make out images but not enough to work on it -- I've had to use another machine for this post).
However, what I don't get is this: if I restart the PB, I get the greeting sign, and my destop picture comes up, and then before my desktop files appear, the screen goes dim.
Previously, I had done the infamous Icelandic "hinge repair" that I read about here, but the epoxy'd screen never really was perfect after that. And I'm using a big binder clip to hold the screen and hinge together. That's worked for over a year.
I can only use A/C power because my machine dies straightaway using its battery.
I hope this isn't too much of a pain to repair, could it be the inverter board as other similar problems that are alike would seem to suggest?
I was hoping not to have to buy another laptop for a year or two or even three, but I console myself with the fact that the new MacBook is "only" US$1000, even if the screen is only 13"
Any insight into the "dim screen problem" would be much appreciated.

  • G500s Extremely Dim Screen

    Hi,
I have a Windows 8 G500s laptop that was purchased this past December.  As of last week, the screen would get extremely dim (almost impossible to see what's on the screen).  The only resolution was to grip the screen in odd areas and the brightness would return.  I'm very frustrated with this issue.
Can someone please help me resolve this?
    Thank you.

    hi dajonx,
Based on your observations, it looks like there's a problem with how the backlights are controlled within the LCD assembly (could be a faulty controller board that powers up the LED's). This is definitely the case if the problem remains even if you just boot in the BIOS.
In this case, I recommend you contact lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for service.

  • Extremely Dim Screen; intermittent Issue

I'm hoping people still check this board out despite being 3 generations old.
So I dropped my phone and now the screen is extremely dim. I can see it if I hold it up to a light, but it's dim. Clearly the backlight is messed up.
The problem is only intermittent, sometimes the screen works, sometimes it does not. So, it appears there is something that came loose in the drop.
It's not covered by apple care, and I'm not quite eligible for an upgrade.
I guess my question is does anyone have an idea of what I should look for if I open it up to look for loose connections? Or if they have any idea what it would cost to fix (either at Apple or a 3rd party).
I'm not concerned about voiding warranty as it's not covered anymore, and I'm not concerned about it breaking (as I'm going to get a new one here in a few months), but I was just hoping I could fix it cheap and easily, and looking for advice.
    Thanks.

Sorry, yes I should have stated that. I've tried resetting the settings, restarting the phone (with power+home key), and erasing and restoring the phone from my backup.
    The issue is still there.
EDIT: Also updated the firmware to the latest firmware for the 3G.

  • How do I fix an extremely dim screen issue on my ipod touch?

I havent gotten my ipod wet. It hasn't been in extreme heat or cold. Today the LCD screen just stopped being bright enough to be able to see it...randomly...one minute it worked and the next it didn't. I tried restoring it and also updating the software but that failed to work. The brightness settings are all the way up. I'm not ********...I use my iPod a lot and it not working is very upsetting...anyone have any other ideas?

Is that through the computer? Because i restored it through the computer but I cannot do it from the ipod itself because I can't see the screen well enough. The light still doesn't work...im definitely not looking forward to a trip to the Apple store >_<

  • Nano screen extremely dim

I recently had a problem with my ipod not turning on however now that I've read and followed the directions properly it is back up and running, BUT the screen is extremely dim. Any ideas on how to fix this? I have not dropped, nor washed, nor mishandled my ipod in any way and have only had it for 9 months (birthday gift from my children). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lissa

Although I have not experienced this with any of my nanos I noticed that you stated you received yours 9 months ago. It may be in your best interest to arrange for a warranty repair while it is still under the 1 year warranty...just in case it is something that no other fixes can handle. Also, have you tried going through the "5 R's" to see if they helped resolve the issue? I'm not sure that would work but it never hurts to try...

  • Tecra A9 - LCD Screen Extremely Dim

    Hi all!
My 4 year old Tecra A9 recently developed a problem with the screen. While using it, i heard a zap and the screen cut out. It hasn't worked since. I've been able to plug it into an external monitor to keep using it though.
But i did find that the screen isn't actually dead, its just extremely dim. If i look really closely and shine a torch on it, I can see what's on the screen. This leads to me believe its something to do with the back-lighting in the LCD screen.
Also, I've checked, and its not a problem with the sensor thinking the lid is closed.
Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has an idea about what the problem specifically is? If so, is this the sort of problem that I can fix myself, or do i need someone from Toshiba to do it for me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Matt89,
I agree with Akuma. If an external monitor works properly it looks like that the FL inverter is faulty. This inverter controls the backlight of internal display and even it would be faulty you can see the picture but very very dim.
If think the best would be contacting an authorized service provider. The guys can order an original FL inverter that is compatible and replace it for you because the display itself must be disassembled and thats not easy.
If your notebook isnt under warranty anymore dont worry because FL inverter is not so expensive. :)

  • My 13" Macbook has a very dim screen. Replace inverter board or lcd screen?

I have a 13-inch Macbook and the screen display has gone extremely dim and is very hard to see. Should I replace the inverter board or lcd screen?

No dice   I have it hooked up to an external display and can see that it isn't recognizing the battery.  I've installed a brand new battery connector already, and this is the second battery (although they are from the same place, so maybe they had a bad batch?).  I've done all the updates (firmware and Battery Updater) but still, nada.  Any other suggestions?
I am not too familiar with this specific MacBook battery.  When I push the button on the bottom, 4 out of the 5 lights come on, then the one in the middle, then they all go off.  When I have it plugged in without the machine on, the light on the adapter is green.  I start it up, and it goes to amber.
This is driving me crazy!  What are the chances I would get two bad batteries?  Or two bad battery connectors?  Could it possibly be the logic board?  I was thinking no, because it actually works fine without a battery and shuts off the backlight when the battery is plugged in.

  • OSX Dims Screen based on Content

I've been noticing that my screen appeared to be dimming randomly (or at least it seemed random at first). I search the web and found tons of people complaining about the same behavior, and adjust their energy settings and ambient light settings, but none of it worked. Their Macs kept on occationally changing the screen brightness.
Idleness wasn't the issue: During my tests I was actively using the computer (and I'm plugged in)
Ambient Light: There was no change in ambient light, so it wasn't this either (and I disabled this setting and the behavior persisted).
However, what has changed is the contents of my screen. If I go to a website with really dark graphics, or go full screen on some movies, the screen brightness turns down. I can reproduce this "dimming" effect consistently... and then I found this:
    http://www.macrumors.com/2013/01/22/apple-granted-patent-on-methods-for-dimming- screens-based-on-content-needs/
Apple has a patent that allows them to dim screens based on their contents. I am certain this is what is affecting our screen brightness. This is meant to be a power saving feature according to the patent, but it is SUPER annoying. What I can't figure out is how to turn this setting off...
    Any help would be great.

  • Wet iphone...now dim screen

My iphone got wet in the hurricane...just wet, not submerged.  Now the screen is extremely dim.  I can barely see anything on it.  I tried putting the phone in rice for a day but no luck. Have also checked Brightness under Settings. Any suggestions?

You can try to let the phone dry for a few more days.  If it still doesn't work, it's hosed.  You can try to fix it yourself or via an iPhone repair shop, or you can take it into an Apple Store for out of warranty exchange.  The cost varies from country to country.  In the US it is $199.00

  • Resume Dims Screen

Hey everyone. I just iinstalled Arch yesterday and thus far I'm very impressed. I came from Fedora which I thought was absolutely fantastic, but Arch may trump that. I have a couple small issues remaining, hoping someone is able to help ..
    1) This is the "major" issue. I suspend my laptop using pm-suspend. It works great. Screen blanks, I can hear the HDD winding down, etc. It resumes quickly too. However, when the screen comes back it's REALLY dim. The lowest setting possible. Normally I can use Fn and the up/down arrow keys to change brightness but these, too, don't work. I'd imagine some module is not getting reloaded on resume but I have no clue which. If I log out of X using CTRL+ALT+DEL it shuts down but it doesn't show the virtual terminal like usually. If I log in blindly and run "startx" everything comes back as normal - screen brightness and all. Thoughts?
    2) Second, is anyone able to point me to a post or wiki article advising how to create a script to run when I close the laptop's lid?
Using a Dell Inspiron 1520 running OpenBox.
    [ben@myhost ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

Thanks for your link. I was aware of quirks but I was hoping this was a simpler issue - edit a power setting or something. Never that easy, eh? Still, can't complain. A bit of playing around got it to work. For anyone else with Dell Inspiron 1520 suspend to ram giving you a dim screen on resume, try:
    pm-suspend --quirk-vbe-post
    Thanks again Reasons.

  • Windows Help and Support screen glitch? And keyboard malfunction! Help!

I have 3 problems. At the log in screen of my hp stream notebook 11, I wasn't able to complete my password due to a malfunction in one of the keyboard keys. I shut down the computer and came back later to try again. It worked but when I logged in, the Windows Help and Support screen kept repeatedly popping up even when x'd out. I would let it repeatedly pop up (like a glitch) and I would x it out and it would go away. Also as I was typing in anything (wordpad, internet, search), every other key letters and numbers were acting as shortcuts to different screens such as apps, the log in screen, control panel etc. then the Windows Help and Support screen would pop back up again as a glitch. Please help!

    Hi @aaliyah22
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
You mention three different issues, and I am happy to assist with this. Obviously we need to start with the keyboard. As it is just the one key you describe as  a problem, I would try a cleaning. You could see if some compressed air helps first as some debris may have gotten into it. Also you can look at these two pages and see if anything helps.

    Cleaning your Notebook PC
The other two problems sound a lot like something like a software or possibly a malware related issue, but you can start with trying a system restore to a point before the problem began and see if that helps.Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
Then take a look at these.

  • Help and Support screen popping up unbidden

Just recently, the HP "Windows Help and Support" screen keeps popping up unbidden, so I have to keep closing it. Very annoying. What can I do about this?

Thank you for the additional information.
Here is HP Help and Support for Vista.  I suggest uninstalling it and reinstalling it to see if it solves your problem.  If not, you may have to do a Systems Recovery.

  • Need some help in creating Search Help for standard screen/field

    I need some help in adding a search-help to a standard screen-field.
    Transaction Code - PP01,
Plan Version - Current Plan (PLVAR = '01'),
    Object Type - Position ( OTYPE = 'S'),
Click on Infotype Name - Object ( Infotype 1000) and Create.
I need to add search help to fields Object Abbr (P1000-SHORT) / Object Name (P1000-STEXT).
I want to create one custom table with fields, Position Abb, Position Name, Job. Position Abb should be Primary Key. And when object type is Position (S), I should be able to press F4 for Object Abb/Object Name fields and should return Position Abbr and Position Name.
I specify again, I have to add a new search help to standard screen/field and not to enhance it.
This is HR specific transaction. If someone has done similar thing with some other transation, please let me know.
There is no existing search help for these fields. If sm1 ever tried or has an idea how to add new search help to a standard screen/field.
    It's urgent.
Thanks in advace. Suitable answers will be rewarded

A search help exit is a function module for making the input help process described by the search help more flexible than possible with the standard version.
This function module must have the same interface as function module F4IF_SHLP_EXIT_EXAMPLE. The search help exit may also have further optional parameters (in particular any EXPORTING parameters).
A search help exit is called at certain timepoints in the input help process.
Note: The source text and long documentation of the above-specified function module (including the long documentation about the parameters) contain information about using search help exits.
Function modules are provided in the function library for operations that are frequently executed in search help exits. The names of these function modules begin with the prefix F4UT_. These function modules can either be used directly as search help exits or used within other search help exits. You can find precise instructions for use in the long documentation for the corresponding function module.
During the input help process, a number of timepoints are defined that each define the beginning of an important operation of the input help process.
If the input help process is defined with a search help having a search help exit, this search help exit is called at each of these timepoints. If required, the search help exit can also influence the process and even determine that the process should be continued at a different timepoint.
    timepoints
    The following timepoints are defined:
    1. SELONE
Call before selecting an elementary search help. The possible elementary search helps are already in SHLP_TAB. This timepoint can be used in a search help exit of a collective search help to restrict the selection possibilities for the elementary search helps.
Entries that are deleted from SHLP_TAB in this step are not offered in the elementary search help selection. If there is only one entry remaining in SHLP_TAB, the dialog box for selecting elementary search helps is skipped. You may not change the next timepoint.
The timepoint is not accessed again if another elementary search help is to be selected during the dialog.
    2. PRESEL1
After selecting an elementary search help. Table INTERFACE has not yet been copied to table SELOPT at this timepoint in the definition of the search help (type SHLP_DESCR_T). This means that you can still influence the attachment of the search help to the screen here. (Table INTERFACE contains the information about how the search help parameters are related to the screen fields).
    3. PRESEL
Before sending the dialog box for restricting values. This timepoint is suitable for predefining the value restriction or for completely suppressing or copying the dialog.
    4. SELECT
Before selecting the values. If you do not want the default selection, you should copy this timepoint with a search help exit. DISP should be set as the next timepoint.
    5. DISP
Before displaying the hit list. This timepoint is suitable for restricting the values to be displayed, e.g. depending on authorizations.
    6. RETURN (usually as return value for the next timepoint)
The RETURN timepoint should be returned as the next step if a single hit was selected in a search help exit.
It can make sense to change the F4 flow at this timepoint if control of the process sequence of the Transaction should depend on the selected value (typical example: setting SET/GET parameters). However, you should note that the process will then depend on whether a value was entered manually or with an input help.
    7. RETTOP
You only go to this timepoint if the input help is controlled by a collective search help. It directly follows the timepoint RETURN. The search help exit of the collective search help, however, is called at timepoint RETTOP.
    8. EXIT (only for return as next timepoint)
The EXIT timepoint should be returned as the next step if the user had the opportunity to terminate the dialog within the search help exit.
    9. CREATE
The CREATE timepoint is only accessed if the user selects the function "Create new values". This function is only available if field CUSTTAB of the control string CALLCONTROL was given a value not equal to SPACE earlier on.
The name of the (customizing) table to be maintained is normally entered there. The next step returned after CREATE should be SELECT so that the newly entered value can be selected and then displayed.
    10. APP1, APP2, APP3
If further pushbuttons are introduced in the hit list with function module F4UT_LIST_EXIT, these timepoints are introduced. They are accessed when the user presses the corresponding pushbutton.
Note: If the F4 help is controlled by a collective search help, the search help exit of the collective search help is called at timepoints SELONE and RETTOP. (RETTOP only if the user selects a value.) At all other timepoints the search help exit of the selected elementary search help is called.
If the F4 help is controlled by an elementary search help, timepoint RETTOP is not executed. The search help exit of the elementary search help is called at timepoint SELONE (at the
    F4IF_SHLP_EXIT_EXAMPLE
This module has been created as an example for the interface and design of Search help exits in Search help.
All the interface parameters defined here are mandatory for a function module to be used as a search help exit, because the calling program does not know which parameters are actually used internally.
A search help exit is called repeatedly in connection with several
events during the F4 process. The relevant step of the process is passed on in the CALLCONTROL step. If the module is intended to perform only a few modifications before the step, CALLCONTROL-STEP should remain unchanged.
However, if the step is performed completely by the module, the following step must be returned in CALLCONTROL-STEP.
The module must react with an immediate EXIT to all steps that it does not know or does not want to handle.
Hope this info will help you.
