HELP!!! - failures with a specific iMovie - iDVD save/burn attempts

I've successfully burned multiple iMovie/iDVD discs without problem, but I've got 1 movie that repeatedly fails with strange errors.
I've optimized the startup drive, the directory of the startup drive and there's 20G free on that drive (and 80+ on the video drive). I also deleted the old plist for iDVD, and ran Cocktail to clear the caches, rebuild permissions, etc.
I tried this with both the iDVD preferences set for 'Best Quality' and then 'Best Performance' (no difference).
I took the original (created in iMovie 4.x), when it failed repeatedly, I recreated it from scratch in iMovie 5.02... no difference.
When I tried to burn it (multiple times), it came back with 'Burn Complete, Found Errors During Burn' (irony here, it hadn't burned ANYTHING, the disc was untouched). Click on error details, and it says 'error #1'.
It had completed rendering the movie.
I also tried saving the iDVD file as a disk image, and it also failed, with a different error (can't screeen capture the dialogs!)... something to the effect that it couldn't initialize the tracks (it had completely finished rendering the movie).
I had seen some mention of a problem with background audio on the DVD Menu, so I also tried it with that removed. No joy.
Any ideas??? I'm desperate and frustrated... I really want to burn this thing for a Christmas surprise.
There's nothing remarkable about the iMovie, it is basically 1 piece, with Multiple Centered Titling on the intro, about 45 minutes long.

Hi Simon,
If you'll read further back into the thread, you'll find that I've covered all known bases with this problem
I am indeed running the most current version, kept on scaling the size of the project smaller, I deleted the plist file for iDVD, ran Cocktail on the disk, etc. etc. etc.
I am now recreating the whole $%^&* thing from scratch again, and I'm crossing my fingers. One thing is for certain, it's NOT an issue of free disk space on the startup drive! This error occurs whether saving to disc image or actually burning the disc.
I was fortunate enough to check the system as it was in the last phases of encoding (audio at that point, and it failed at the end of the audio) and that's when I got the error.
This problem is specific to iDVD, Toast 6.x and now 7.x work just fine.
This is starting to become painfully embarassing to this MacEvangelist
I wonder if DVD Studio Pro ever does this?

Bruce

  • Help recoreding with Isight in Imovie HD

Hi, I bought an Isight the other day and i am having a tough time figuring out how to get the Ichat to recored or show up in Imovie Hd. I went to help in Imovie and i read them, but when it says clcik the triangle next to the camera mode, there is no triangle, I just got a 12in Powerbook and i am still trying to find my way through iMovie. Please help me get my Ichat in iMovie

    Hello Nicholas.
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you "... have everything but my mouse unplugged from the USB and Firewire ports." you have "No Camera Attached".
    Try plugging in your iSight
    b before
    you launch iMovie.
    If iMovie
    b then
does not recognize iSight, leave your iSight plugged in, quit iMovie and immediately launch QuickTime Pro or iChat AV. If either of these apps now recognize your iSight, perform your regular Mac OS X maintenance and try again.
If you iMovie still does not recognize iSight but other apps do, I would guess that you have a problem with your iMovie itself. In that case, I suggest you try the FAQs or relevant topics in iMovie HD Discussions.

It's not entirely clear what you mean by that. If you have that "Pictures" folder open and you hold down a command key while you click on the icon just left of the "Pictures" name in the title bar, you'll see a list of the folder hierarchy. I'll guess you'll see this list:
    - Pictures
    - <yourusername>
    - Users
    - <yourmacdisk>
    - <yourcomputer>
    Is that what you see?
With that particular file you're editing selected in the Finder, pull down the Finder menu option File -> Get Info. In the resulting window what do you see in the "Sharing & Permissions" section? (Expand that section by clicking on the disclosure triangle if necessary.) Does it say "You can read and write"?
In a Finder window click on the sidebar item with your your user name. In the resulting window repeat the "Get Info" process above after selecting the "Pictures" folder. Do you now see "You can read and write" again?
Can you drag a file (perhaps from your computer's Desktop) into the "Pictures" folder? Can you select a file in that folder and invoke the Finder menu item File -> Duplicate?

  • Can anyone help me with this specific text animation?

I currently work for a news program, and for their weekly video they have quotes that appear on screen. I want to be able to have the text animate on one letter at a time, but before it does so it cycles through 2 or 3 other letters (that's kind of the show's main graphic, when text appears it cycles through various other letters before landing on the correct one).
So basically if they have a quote that says "This will be great", the text will appear one letter at a time, but each letter will cycle through 2 or 3 other letters first. Does this make sense, and is it possible?
Any any help will be greatly appreciated

  • Big help needed with FCP3 Movie into iDVD

    Hi there
I have completed a 8.30 min film in FCP 3 and want to export it to the best
quality for DVD , When the finished film is exported as a DV Strem it is
about 3,6GB but when it is placed into iDVD it only say its takes up 0.6 GB ,
and loses quality , What can I do, to keep its original quality and file size ??
    Cheers

Export out of FCP 3 as a Final Cut Pro Movie, self contained. Do NOT export as a DV Stream.
Open iDVD. Import the Final Cut Pro movie and burn the DVD.
When it is burned to DVD, compression will occur. It is compressed into MPEG-2 so that it is viewable on your DVD player.

  • New problem with camera and imovie 08

i have two questions already posted about my camera not being found by imovie 08 except that it did it the first time and wouldn't any time after that.
well here's the new problem. as i'm sitting here trying to find some other post that could help me with my dilemna imovie opens and shows my impost screen but says "communication error". with my first joy and imovie working again came confusion about this error. the error makes it so i cannot import video because the next "error" that comes up says my camera is disconnected or off but even this is farther than i've gotten in weeks. i don't know what this error means and i still can't import video. anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

    Hi
    Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
    What Camcorder ?
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    Using WHAT ? :
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
    this and have a re-try.

    Hi,
The movie is probably MPEG format.
QuickTime Pro and iMovie cannot transcode audio contained in MPEG movies.
Try to convert with SimpleMovieX or MPEG Streamclip instead.

  • PlayReady failure with specific OS version of Windows 8.1 Update

    Hello,
I'm observing a failure in my app during Smooth Streaming video playback using PlayReady DRM. The app is a WinJS Universal App solution for Windows Store and Windows Phone, using the latest updates for Visual Studio 2013, Update 4.
So far, the failure is limited to one specific version of the Windows 8.1 Update. I have two identical devices, both retail versions of the phone, that demonstrate this issue. Note, these same phones that fail with PlayReady can successfully
    stream unprotected Smooth Streaming content.
My other five Windows Phone devices, with different OS version numbers, do not demonstrate the failure with the identical app installed. Therefore, I suspect the OS version may be the cause.

    Hello,
0x887A0004 equates to DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED. This error is usually generated when you are trying to use Direct3D features that are not supported. Different devices support different D3D features since they contain different video hardware. It is possible
that a hardware feature that is required by the license is not supported in the hardware / driver of the device. I would recommend that you check the license and make sure that it does not contain any hardware specific requirements such as HDCP.
In other words try playing content with the least restrictive license and see if it works for you.
    I hope this helps,

  • Using Toast 10 with iMovie (& iDVD)

I am creating home movies (an hour or more in length w/ photos and music as well) in iMovie. I burned copies in iDVD and the quality seemed quite bad. I purchased Toast 10 hoping the quality would be better. I want to play my DVDs on our TV. How can I use iMovie and Toast together so that I can get great quality DVDs? Are my movies too long?

    Hi
There are three things to this.
    • 1. DVD - Has only SD-quality - There are NO HD DVDs due to it's standard
    • 2. If original material is miniDV or interlaced video - then iMovie'08 & 09
are not the tools to use - they discard every second line = VHS-quality
    • 3. If in iMovie previous versions (up to HD6) Share/Export to iDVD was destructive
    when movie contained photos
    a. Resulting DVD was heavily pixelated
    b. Original movie in iMovie was harmed and - photos had to be re-imported and re-edited
To get better quality - only step is to go to Blu-Ray BUT
    • Need of Blu-Ray-player, neither Mac or DVD-player can playback
    • Need of BD-component to Toast™ to be able to burn
    • Short movies (20 min - or at least <60 min) can be put on DVD disks - else
    Need of BD-burner and BD-disks.
    My collected list on
    DVD-Quality
    1. iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2.Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

  • IMovie / iDvd BIG Headache - Help please

    iMovie v4
    iDvd v5
    2.5Gb Ram
    Hi all,
I have just spent nearly two days creating a film in imovie only to find that it wont burn in idvd.
It contains a large amount of audio clips and suffers from the stuttering problems mentioned in other threads which seems to be a serious bug in the software.
I passed the project to idvd from imovie and built the menus etc, it previews fine in idvd. When burning, it all goes well until it gets to ''encoding audio asset'' when it just hangs permanently.
Has anyone got any ideas? i've had just about enough of video editing (serious video camera import problems as well) and have now run out of patience.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

    Dave,
Happy New Year to you and Sue!
See how easy answers to problems can be obtained when detailed info is provided.
I briefly looked at the suggestions/advice by Sue & Karl posted and I agree with them.
I convert mpeg2 files with MpegStremclip and have on occasion burned my audio to CD and reimported to my audio track.
OK, so far so good. Now let's look forward to your next project (or maybe this one if you still have problems).
I make it a practice to edit in small chunks (by scene/segement/clip, or whatever, but always ensuring the video on the timeline never exceeds 9:28 mins which equals about 2gbs.
After I've added all my transitions, effects, titles, etc. I export the finished scene/segement/clip and start a new project with the next scene/segement/clip, or whatever.
After I've completed and exported the last scene, I start a new project and bring them all together (joining them with transitions if neccesary), save & close iMovie. Open iDVD, import the .Mov project file into iDVD and Voila!
Editing in small chucks (by predetermined scenes) is less complicated and lessens the possibilty of, out of sync audio, stuttering, etc. It also lessens the many transitions, visual/audio effects and titles that iDVD would ordinarily have to deal with during the encoding process, making it easier for iDVD to do it's thing.
The suggestions above are just the way I do it others may have different ways of editing that produce the same results, but I stick with what I've found works best for me. I haven't had any problems (that couldn't be corrected/resolved)since iMovie 3.xx
    NOTE.
The easiest way to import all the previously exported scenes/segments/clips in the new iMovie project is to:
Locate the new project's media folder & drag all the scenes into it. The next time you open iMovie the option to place the clips in the clips pane will appear, select yes, and drag the clips to the timeline. Conduct any last minute editing if needed, save and close. you're ready for iDVD.
Just for your info, clips bigger than 2gbs can only be brought into iMovie by the above procedure (being placed in the media folder), however, no further editing can be performed on these clips.
Clips smaller than 2gbs can be brought into iMovie several different ways and are still editable.

    Hi,
To configure your ODBC DataSource, go to Control Panel ---> DataSources(ODBC) (If you are in a Windows environment).
Select the tab System DSN. If you have not added your data source, then do so by clicking on the Add button. If you have added the datasource, click on the Configure button to configure it.
Give the datasource name, then the database name.
You have to give the hostname, service name and server name. I guess, in most cases, the datasource name and host name will be the same, service name and server name will be the same. If you are using TCP/IP, the protocol will be onsoctcp.
There will be a file named Services under C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc where you have to give the port number for accessing this server.
It will be like this <service name> <portnumber>/tcp
    Hope this helps...
    best wishes,
    Nish

  • Help Needed With iMovie - Thank You

I am working on a project with someone using iMovie. Here are my questions regarding iMovie:
My project involves all stills which i want to animate with pans and zooms.
    1. Most important: what is the optimal size/proportion - - in pixels and in resolution -- for adding stills to iMovie?
    2. I can't find a pan function under the Ken Burns effect, only zoom.
I want to pan along my vertical images, so that the image moves up or down the screen. Is there a way to do this in iMovie? Is it possible to important an image whose height is longer than the screen size and then move the screen view along it within allowable parameters.
    3. Someone told me that i need to work in 640 x 480 format at 72 dpi in order to burn to DVD from iMovie. When i imported images this size, they loaded, then immediately disapppeared. The little screen went white, and so did the clip thumbnail. They did not show while
playing either. Then i figured out that they should be 720 x 480.
Some of these load correctly, and others get cropped in iMovie. The vertically oriented pix that i did not format to 720 have black banding added, which i expected, but are also cropped at top and bottom. How can i avoid this cropping?
Please send replies to me by email at [email protected]
    Thank you for helping me.

in addition to Brie's excellent hints... :
in computer lingo you have TWO terms defining the quality of a picture:
pixels and "dots per inch" (dpi)
pixels is, what you see on your screen.. (get closer.. CLOSER.. there: · << a dot, NO! a pixel...)
printed products also have "pixels".. BUT: in print, they define quality by how many pixels dots fit into one inch.. the more the better... way back in computer history (a few months ago...) a "large" 15 screen with 800x600 pixels had.. < math > ~72 dots per inch.. now, if you set a 20" screen to 800x800 pixel.. you'll get < math > .. ehm, less dots per inch/dpi..
a screen has a DEFINED number of dots pixels.. EVERY video screen displays only 720x480, if it is a giant 30" plasma, or a 25years old 7" b/w tube... (OK, now we have HiDef: they offer more pixel, but again a fixed, defined number of pixels....)
    different in print:
an average flyer has 150 dpi... a blinky magazine (Vogue) has 300dpi... INDEPENDENTLY of the size of the pic... you can make 1200 pixeldots fit into < math > 4 inches... or 10inches..
so, some pic files contain BOTH data: the resolution (pixel) AND the dots needed for print (dpi) ..
    video = fix resolution
    print = variable resolution...
read Brie's comment, but why a higher resolution is useful in video/iMovie..
