HELP! File cache Maxed out at startup

Hello everyone, I have used this forum to answer my everyday questions but I have not found the answer to this question. As of late my Mac's file cache gets maxed out instantly. I have 32GB of RAM and near 28GB gets used up in the file cache. I try using memory cleaner and the file cache will not delete. I have to use the terminal command "sudo purge" to delta the file cache. Just yesterday, I started up my mac and 27GB was already in use in the file cache.
I recently installed Lightroom 5.7.1 and Camera Raw 8.7. And the problems have started since I installed one of these apps.

Un-install Memory Cleaner and let the OS handle memory. It does a better job. Un-install using the developers instructions.
Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Configuring Help Files

    Hi everyone,
I would like to modify some of the help files that come out-of-the-box with Identity Manager.
The help files are contained within idm.jar. Is it best practice to go
into these files and change them directly? Or is there an alternative
way to do this? I believe you may be able to place them into
IDMDirectory/WEB-INF/classes directory and manipulate them from there - however, despite the changes made here being displayed on the screen, an exception is shown on stdout stating no help file is available for this page.
    Has anyone done this before?

I tried to do this as you suggested, configuring a file and then placing it in the doc folder within the idm directory. I also tried placing the whole com directory but this didn't work.
Have you tried this previously? Any other suggestions?

  • IMac G5 gray screen on startup and fan maxes out!! Help!

I've heard this problem quite a bit on several forums, but have yet to find an answer. I Need help!! My iMac G5 delays on startup ( i hit the button, and startup doesn't actually start for a minute or 2), and when it does, i get the gray screen, and then after another minute, the fan goes crazy and maxed out until I manually shut down. I reset the memory, and check the LED lights, (all came on normally). What's going on here!? I appreciate any help

If the troubleshooting solutions listed in Mac 101 were of no help & you found no solutions to your problem(s) listed in the various Knowledge Base Articles see if the following suggestions are of any help:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.
Step 1: Restart into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during startup. The comp will run a complete & lengthy file systtem check, then start up w/only the required kerenel extensions & w/o running any Startup items tthat you installed.
If you are running OS 10.4 it will also perform some font finagling.
Try starting up normally again. If you are still stalling, restart in Safe Mode & move on to Step 2...........
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Step 2: Open Library>Startup items folder-the root level Library, not the one in your user name folder.
Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc. Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if your Mac stalls. It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart. If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back. If and/or when the stall resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component.
If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to Step 3.................
Step 3: WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.
Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*
Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if your Mac stalls, then move to a smaller set of items, repeatingn the process until the culprit is found.
Or you can use Preferential Treatment which is a FREE utility that does all the work for you.
Hang in there & good luck!!!!

  • HT1689 i have my daughters iphone 3, i want to use it as an i-pod, but it keeps receiving messages from some her friends is there a way to stop this from happening, please help, my phone is maxed out and would really like the storage for music, thanks

i have my daughters iphone 3, i want to use it as an i-pod, but it keeps receiving messages from some her friends is there a way to stop this from happening, please help, my phone is maxed out and would really like the storage for music, thanks

It sounds like it still has her information on it, so it might be efficient to navigate to Settings, then General, then Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. You can then set up the phone again, using your information. This way the phone will be yours, officially, and her data and information will be removed.

  • Maxed out CPU Usage, happens suddenly, no obvious cause, please help!

I've had an XServe-G5 running well for about 18 months, with anywhere from 2-5 active users at one time. The server is only running AFP, Software Update & FTP services.
For the last 2 months, without warning, the CPU usage will max out, with only a small amount of disk & lan access with it.
I've found a less than ideal solution . . . . the cpu max out seems to be linked to 1 or 2 users logged in at one time, but not always the same users, if these users disconnect then the CPU usage returns to normal. I haven't found a way to identify which user/users it is, so I disconnect them through 'Server Admin' one by one till I get a result.
This goes on up to 5 times a day. I've checked the AFP access log when the problem happens, but can't see anything there that isn't there normally, the error log has no events. When there are no users logged in, other than the local 'Admin', the problem does not occur.
We've resorted to only logging into the server when needed, but it's getting to be a major pain.
    Please help!

Many things can cause this. What do you see in "top"?
One example is when you hit the "corrupt .DS_Store" bug in AFP. See afp548.com for a discussion, e.g.:

  • HELP! Imported audio files now randomly out of sync!

I cut a short film a while ago. It was shot on HDV. I used some in-camera audio (from the HDV tapes) but also, some audio files from my sound mixer, which I originally imported as WAV files and manually sunc them up. Everything was fine.
Later, I outgrew the original media drive and upgraded, copying all of my media to the new drive. When I did that, I noticed that all of the camera audio was fine, but all of the audio that had been imported from those WAV files was randomly out of sync -- meaning that some files were 1 sec early, some 16 frames late, etc.
When I broke the link and re-linked to the original drive, all was fine again. Now, however, doing that makes those original files out of sync also.
When I relink these files now, FCP ALWAYS finds a discrepency with them: They supposedly have a different "Media Start and End" and "Rate." Apparently, that's why they're being offset, but they're the EXACT same files that I started with, so what's up?!??
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. They represent A LOT of work to fix one by one.

This is what it says under FORMAT: 24-bit Integer (Little Endian), Mono, 48.000 kHz
Incidentally, this is EXACTLY the same for both the files on the original drive (that play perfectly in sync) and the copied ones that are out of sync.
I realize that FCP likes AIFFs, but WAVs is what my sound guy gave me.
    Any other ideas?

  • I have imported a jpeg photo into iPhoto and cannot get the Places map to let me fix a position on the map. It remains disabled for my photo. Checking out the Help file has not given any solution.

I have imported a jpeg photo into iPhoto  and cannot get the Places map tp show. I have tried the Help file and the information was not helpful. Can anyone give advice here?

I am using iPhoto 9.1.1. When I select thephoto, then Places I get the window (Places to lookup disabled). When I hit theInfo button I get the size an JPEG notification, and  Faces and Key words. The “reverse” of thepicture shows a window with Rotate, Hide, Trash etc.
When I select Places, get the Google worldmap, and this case a pin on Sydney Australia showing that eighteen photos arecorrectly placed. I am unable to make the connection to San Francisco wherethis particular photo was taken on a very modern camera.

  • How do I get my iTunes (both purchased and cd's) into the cloud as I cannot use match my iMac and MacBook are too old to use the right OS and maxed out RAM memory upgrades, but have iPhone 4S and now 64gb iPad and libraries on desktops plus iPod!!

So very excited bought iPad and new speakers today! Want to get all my music sorted as across iMac (G5), MacBook os 10.6 (maxed out ram and memory) and old iPod. Saw Match would be an option but can't use due to old OS so I can get the raw music library files but then what do I do to get all in one place? Any help appreciated.

A good route would be to attach a USB drive to the macbook.  You can use the drive to assemble a copy of all of your music from your various devices.  iTunes on the macbook can be used to create a new library, located on the USB drive, into which you can import all of your music.
    Two major benefits:
    1.  From here you can run iTunes Match across your entire music collection; and
    2.  You will have created a full local backup of all of your music on the USB drive.
Once complete you will be able to access the music from any iDevice capable of running iTunes Match,  Do remember as you add music it is important to maintain a local backup in order to keep your music safe.

  • Why So Much RAM Going to "File Cache"

    Hi,
I seemed to be maxing out my RAM in my 5,1 Mac Pro when I had Adobe Lightroom, PhotoShop, and DxO's OpticsPro 10 open, which are the 3 apps I use in tandem quite a bit. So, I bought 8 GB's more RAM (not a great deal but as much as I can afford at the moment), popped it in on Saturday, and was happy to see that I seemed to have plenty of RAM when the 3 apps were open. By the end of yesterday, however, almost all of my RAM was being chewed up. I opened Activity Monitor this morning and saw that almost 12 GB is being used up by "File Cache". Is this normal? Right now - after installing the 8GB's and after 1.5 days almost being back to where I was before I bought the additional memory, it feels like I'm in a Memory Black Hole. Any insight?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Yes. OS X uses the file cache to store frequently used code and files in order to make the computer run a little bit faster instead of spending a lot of time loading and unloading data from disk. It improves memory management. It's a good thing.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Activity monitor file cache

In activity monitor it shows that I have 16GB of physical memory, 12.77 GB used memory, 16GB virtual memory.
It also shows App memory 1.9GB, FILE CACHE 9.56GB and wired memory 1.31GB.
My question is in regards to file cache at 9.56GB.  What is file cache and why is it so high?  Does this mean I should install more memory?  I looked file cache up and I think it's memory that has been used but is not being used currently, it's waiting to be used again.  Not sure if that's right though, or what it really means.  Thanks for any help.
    Late 2013 27" iMac, 3.4 GHz i5
    16GB ram
    OSX 10.9.4

Thank you, that helps.  I'm not super tech savvy, but this is what I took from that article.
The app memory + wired memory + file cache = memory used.  So since the memory used includes file cache, I'm not really running out of memory as I thought I was.  The file cache is basically RAM on stand by in case it's needed by any app.  God, I hope I got that right!
The memory pressure on my activity monitor shows green.

  • Why do we minimize windows file cache?

    Hi,
Can anybody please explain why do we minimize the windows file cache?
    help.sap.com has the below lines..
"The Windows file cache directly competes with SAP programs for physical memory by pushing them out of the memory. Therefore, you should minimize the file cache"
Can anybody explain what does this exactly mean?
    Thanks,
    Debasis.

    Hi Debasis,
when I first read your question I thought:
"This must be a joke-question! Surely nobody who has to deal with highly complex system landscapes like the ones NetWeaver makes necessary would have a real issue with understanding this basic concept!"
But on the other hand, we all started working in this business with more or less sound knowledge about the technical foundations that influence the systems we work with.
So, here is my try on this:
Main memory (in most computers today also known as RAM) is a resource to store data shared among all programs that run on that computer at the same time.
The SAP NetWeaver workprocesses (disp+work.exe) are such programs. And the Windows filesystem management is also a kind of program in that sense.
Both of these two programs need RAM to do their work. The more memory they get, the better they can do their work.
If you decide to install NetWeaver to a computer the documentation developers assumed, that this will be the main use for this computer. For example, they did not expect that you use the same computer as a file- or print server or webserver or server for anything else (although this would be possible).
Therefore it was decided that, to make the NetWeaver program work best, it would be best to give it as much resources (like RAM) as possible. Obviously this means that these resources have to be taken from other programs, just like the filesystem cache of Windows.
And there we are: by reducing the file cache of the Windows server we allow other programs (like our NetWeaver) to use more RAM for it's own purposes.
Usually there are not so much 'file actions' on a server where NetWeaver is running that this is a problem. Most of the data processed in a workprocess is read over the network from the database and stored back to it, so no need to keep a big cache for 'file actions'.
If your question just refered to the "pushing out of the memory" part, no problem either!
As you may have realized by know the demand for RAM is large. In fact its so large, that most often it is too expensive to buy as much RAM for a computer as it would be needed to fullfill all the demand.
Fortunately, not all data stored into the RAM is needed all the time. Actually, most parts of it are not used for most of the time. This characteristic of the demand for RAM opens the opportunity to save parts of the data in the RAM into a file (no, you won't need the filesystem cache for this file ) and thereby make space for other data to be stored in RAM.
This functionality is also called 'paging' as the data is written to disks in chunks which are called 'pages'.
Ok, with this faboulous feature we got the option to put more data into the RAM than we actually have installed into our computer, which is really great.
Unfortunately when we want to access our data again, it has to be loaded back from disk into memory. And for that some other part of the data in RAM needs to be saved to disk first to make space for the data we want to access.
This 'writing out - reading in' of data takes time. Programs like the workprocesses need to wait until the operating system has done this for them. Until this is done, they can basically do nothing than wait - and so can the users that see a 'hourglass' mousepointer when they called a new transactiom.
So 'paging' is really bad for the system performance and for the response times of the system.
Therefore it is usally wanted to keep this paging down on a level where it does not affect the workprocesses too badly.
And this can only be done by either putting more RAM into the machine or reducing the demand for RAM - which is done e.g. by minimizing the filesystem cache.
I hope this lengthly explanation helped you to get the idea.
    Best regards,
    Lars

  • Too much caching in 2008, how can I limit file-cache?

2008 Server with enough RAM, client copies a server stored file to the local drive, the server "eats" up all his ram, and when the server hits the limit it slows down to crawl speed, like he would be swapping out his cache too. Especially annoying if the server runs hyper-v guests, they nearly stop. I saw that effect on a lot of servers, but all my searches failed. 2008-R2 does not show that annoying effect, so I hope again it can be adjusted in 2008.
See this screenshot (Update interval of taskmanager is 5 seconds): http://csb-filderstadt.homepage.t-online.de/Too-much-caching.png
Server 2008 enterprise, 16 GB RAM, 2 Quad-core, uses 650 MB (the hyper-v guests are not running) when without load. One client copies a .vhd file of about 70 GB from the server to himself. The network speed is OK, about 100 MBytes/s, copy speed slows down to about 80 MB/s when the RAM limit is reached.
But how can I prevent that the simple file cache eats up all RAM, and then slows down the machine to crawl, including all hyper-v guest (if they are running). Opening a taskmanager takes about 1 minute when the limit is reached, normally less than a second.
Is there a setting in the registry so I can either limit the RAM used for caching, or a way to tell the filecache to leave more free RAM for the actual work?

    Guys,
This is an old post but I have been looking everywhere for a solution.
    Below is the server config:
    Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit
    12 GB Ram
    HyperV - 2 Virtual
Virtual 1 - 1 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
Virtual 2 - 2 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
    Exchange 2010 on Physical server
less than 10 users on exchange
Current Mail box per user - approx 3 GB
    AV - Nod32
    BES Express on Physical server
When I reboot the server the Memory usage is around 60% but slowly store.exe starts to eat the memory and finally it reaches 98% and then server hangs. This is so regular that sometimes I have to reboot the server 3 or 4 times a week.
BTW, I tried to limit the memory usage to 3GB via ADSI after googling but store.exe keeps on using and there was no use making this change.
    ADSI change: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax = 393216
Can someone please please help me.
    Regards
    J
Your setup is wrong for your usage.
    My recommendation would be:
1 Virtual Exchange with 8 GB RAM (or 6GB with dynamic up to 8GB) and four virtual CPU's
1 Virtual Blackberry Server with 2 GB RAM and two virtual CPU's.
Host machine: Only AV and Hyper-V, nothing else, not even connected to an active directory domain if not REALLY needed.
This will solve your memory issues without requiring hacking 'round the cache settings of Exchange.

  • The volume of Youtube is extremely low, even maxed out.

I would say that for the past two-three weeks I've been having a problem where my Youtube volume in Firefox is extremely low. In order to hear anything really I have to have my Windows volume at 100%, my speaker volume maxed out, and Youtube volume at its highest.
I Watched the exact same youtube video in chrome and its so LOUD! I had to turn my windows volume to 50% and my speakers way down and it was still louder than Firefox. I searched for similar issues and found one that exactly matched my problem, I even followed the suggested steps to fixing the issue at hand but nothing has worked.
    Steps completed so far:
    -Fresh install
-Cleared cookies, cache, site preferences and offline data
    -re installing flash
    -Cleared flash cookies and settings
I dont want to abandon firefox but this issue is extremely annoying and there doesnt seem to be a logical fix available. Any help is appreciated.

    Philip,
I want to thank you for your suggestion. There was an issue where the volume for the Firefox application was turned down extremely low resulting in the issue at hand. I have since corrected this thanks to you!
    James,
I appreciate you trying to help but I explained in my question that I had the YouTube volume up to 100%.

Read through the steps of "Troubleshooting Issues in Oracle9iAS Portal Architecture & Performance" at the above link on PortalCenter.
