HELP!! File system corrupted

Hi,
I got the filesystem on my LaCie Biggest Quadra 4 Tb external RAID disk suddenly corrupted and the system doesn't recognize the disk anymore, but the RAID controller does not complain about disk errors. Shortly, what happened:
- the disk is my Time Maschine disk
- I had a simulation code running over night writing output on that disk, too
- the disk was nearly full (2 Gb free)
- I found my code hanging and access to that disk rather slow, but I continued working without using that disk much
- I did the 10.5.3 update and rebooted the machine
- after boot the machine complained that the external disk is not recognized
(BTW: I don't think the upgrade was the problem. I cannot see the disk even from my laptop which I didn't upgrade yet!)
Disk utility does see the disk as a general volume, the original volume is not recognized. With disk utility I could only initialize the disk, so no chance to repair. "Data rescue" sees the volume with it's name, I haven't tried yet to see if it would recover files from that. So, now my question for the gurus over the net:
- is there any other option to repair the filesystem, I don't think I have an issue with the disk itself, as the RAID controller should complain about that.
- if the only option is to recover the files to a different disk, does it make a sense to recover the time machine file structure? That structure is overfilled with hard links that I don't believe will get recovered correctly. Is there a chance to make recovered or copied time machine backups work again on a different disk?
- how could it come that the fs got corrupted such that the disk isn't recognized anymore as a HFS+ volume?
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Thomas

Just in case someone else gets to this topic:
I found out that the partition table got corrupted. No plan how that happened, the RAID seems ok. I was able to adjust that problem with a free program called testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk). After that the volume mounted again. Disk utility found problems on the filesystem which I repaired. I have a 50 Gbyte image of my powerbook disk on that filesystem which mounts if I skip verification, but fails verification. So, the filesystem got really corrupted, but at least I could mount it again and save the possible.

  • File system corrupted *after* it was unmounted

    Hi all,
I'd be interested in any opinions on this problem.
I recently bought a 1TB Samsung Story Station 3 usb hard drive for use with Time Machine.
This model of drive has a power switch on the front. Most of the time I don't need hourly backups so my plan is to leave the drive turned off most of the time and only turn it on when I feel the need for automatic hourly backups.
A beautiful setup... except... The file system keeps getting corrupted and it is not always repairable.
    What is happening?
My procedure is to eject the disk then switch off the drive.
About half the time an immediate disk verify will report that the disk requires repair.
I have tried variations of this with very similar results. Here is a typical failure scenario:-
1 - Start Time Machine "Back Up Now"
2 - Let it copy some data then stop the backup (if necessary)
    3 - Eject the disk
4 - Switch off the drive
5 - Switch on the drive
    6 - Verify
    Variations on the theme...
I have tried the drive with and without a bootable image restored to it and therefore with and without journalling on the file system (I believe).
1, 2 - I have tried copying data using finder instead of using time machine.
3 - I have tried umount -f and diskutil unmount
Note that umount without -f reports the drive is busy but other ejection/unmount mechanisms work.
    Is this related?
The only thing that may have made a difference is that powering down the mac, instead of just the drive, after ejection has not yet resulted in a damaged file system.
The obvious conclusion to draw is that a buffer somewhere is not being flushed before I turn off the drive, but is this buffer in OS X or in the drive itself?
In either case I assume other people are having the same problem.
For now I will just leave the drive turned on all the time. Maybe this is what everyone else does so nobody else has sees the problem.

I need help with my MP3 Player. This is the second one I have bought and it keeps going to 'File System Corrupted'. Its an RCA MP3 Player. Holds 5GB's. My first one lasted about 6 months and this one only 3 months. I don't drop it. Like maybe once, but on a soft floor and its never been thrown or beaten on. No marks on it from being dropped or hit on anything. Also I can't get it to respond to my computer. I plug it in and says, 'File System Corrupted'. There needs to be like a way to fix it. Other wise the people who built it are getting money easily with a device that works only a short limited amount of time. I've pressed my power button and held it for 0 seconds. Nothing happens. I'm really annoyed with this device. I've waited much money on it. Is there at all a way to fix it. ~Dark Warrior~

  • CC configuration causes freezing and file system corruption

I have received no response for:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6074118
It is a major issue, can I file an issue/fix request somehow?
Basically it appears that the default configuration when installing the complete product suite causes the OS (OSX Mavericks) to freeze unpredictably and render the system unusable unless shut down and rebooted. This may result in file system corruption and data loss requiring complete reinstall of OS and all products.
Some have mentioned 'drive' is causing this, but I am not familiar with that component and do not see any options to remove or disable such a product in CC.
I do not want any non-essential add-ons (like Bridge?) - just a reliable production configuration so I can get work done.
The risk of having the system 'locked up' or file system corrupted is unacceptable.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Help - odd file system corruption.

I have something very worrying going on on my system. The contents of an important folder is being listed differently in 3rd party applications vs the Finder. Apps which use a non-OS file browser cannot see the up to date contents (its an important project I'm currently working on), instead they only list folders from months ago which are now long gone and don't show the current true contents at all. Eg Cinema 4D's Content Browser can't see the current files correctly, but it can just fine via the OS Open/Save dialog.
Even worse is that Chrono Sync has exactly the same problem. When it syncs it correctly lists some of the current files that I'm working on, but in the Anylise section, manually drilling down to my working project folder again shows the incorrect contents!
I have copied the directories to a new HD but even THEY show the same errors when not viewing the contents directly with Lion file browsers***
I can remember once when I first saw this in Cinema 4D I immediately checked in the Finder - and the Finder showed the wrong contents too !- I refreshed the Finder window by clicking a different folder and back to the working directory which then updated before my eyes to the correct contents.
How can I fix this? It seems like there is an immenent serious corruption about to happen to my files and/or disk. Disk Utility shows no errors, nothing to repair. Can/should I use Diskwarrior or some other repair app. Help!
(***I just remembered that I used CCC in block level copy mode so this might account for why the corruption has been transferred to the new drive. I am copying the working directory to the new disk using drag nd drop in the Finder to see if that helps. However I still need the underlying corruption in my User folder repaired)

Yes, I have quite a comprehensive backup strategy in place (involving a Drobo for nightly CCC backups, a CCC nightly bootable disk clone and TM for hourly backups). The Block Copy is for the bootable disk. The nightly Drobo backups are done with vanila CCC file copying,
Disk Util does not find any problems, neither did Disk Warrior. SMART is all OK.
However as I said, the problem is present on one of the backups as well which has put the integrity of the rest of my backups in doubt. also I have tried a direct Finder copy to a new drive (instead of CCC block copy) but the problem persisted.
I have however come up with a temporary fix: I moved the current folder to the trash, navigated to the parent directory using Cinema 4D's Content Browser wherein it 'saw' the ancient folder once again. This errant folder was now also visible in the Finder since the original folder (which has the same name) was now in the trash. I renamed it and moved it to the trash too. Then put the original folder from the trash back into its parent directory and emptied the trash removing the errent folder for good. It seems that did the trick of updating whatever caches or databases were broken and all my apps can correctly see the correct folder and its contents again.
This 'historical' version of the folder was being linked to by 3rd party file browsers I think because in the past it had the same name in the same location as the current folder. Where and how the OS got confused is still a mystery. Does it keep different file system records for the finder vs other apps?
I am not 100% convinced this is a true solution though as there may well be a deeper problem afoot.
I would like to see some kind of error/fixed message from Disk Util just so I know the OS is on top of this problem. As it stands my Mac thinks everythin is A-OK.

  • _NTFS - File system corrupt

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new Seagate HDD because the old hard disk was failing.  Now I get a message every day in the event viewer that the NTFS file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable.  I have run checkdisk several
times, but the message keeps reappearing.  I also downloaded Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB982018), but I still receive the message.   I do not know how to delete shadow copies on C:.

    Hi,
What is the result of chkdsk command?
Generally, if you got a corrupted disk, in the result of chkdsk output, you need get information about disk fault.
If this is a hardware issue, please contact the device manufacture for more help.

  • Oracle vm 3.1.1 server pool file system corruption

    Hi
I have a small lab environment composed by 2 Oracle VM Servers and SAN access.
This morning somehow the OCFS2 Server Pool File System (the 12GB one) corrupted and the Server Pool seems dead. How can I recover from this error? I looked in the documentation and MOS but found nothing
    Thank you

I know it would be a lot of work in such a scenerio. I don't know what you're using for storage but you could snapshot or replicate the pool storage to create a backup that can be restored.
I do wish they would let you select more than one VM guest in the VM Manager. Would be really nice to have such. Seems like it would be a rather easy feature to implement.

  • HELP: File System Erro

Hi, i hope somebody can help me... i have a MuVo N200 (GB) bought few months ago.
Now i can't use it because when i push the on button appears the message "File System Error" and the player turns off automatically.
    Somebody can help me?
    Thanks...

It doesn't matter if you already have the latest firmware, reload it anyway. This can sort out a lot of problems.
You say that you can't format the player - does it tell you why? Any error messages?

As a test I tried doing a pacman -S to reinstall one of those packages, and it gave the same error as well as complaining about the missing depends file. After I told it to install the already up to date package pacman kept saying that the package was corrupted. Any way to fix this short of doing a reinstall?

These files have to do with the pacman database of all packages, not of installed packages (which are in /var/lib/pacman/local). I would suggest trying 'pacman -Syy' to clean that up, and if you still have the same sorts of errors afterwards that would suggest quite annoying disk corruption.

  • Reinstalling Tiger After File System Corruption

One of my users inadvertantly deleted the /var directory on my Tiger system. The system will now only boot to an sh prompt and no files are accessible.
I need to re-install the OS. The re-installation docs describe methods that are accessible from Mac OS. What I need is to perform a clean install. On Linux or Windows this would be accomplished by booting from the installation media and performing a clean install.
What is the equivalent process for Macs? Can I boot from the cdrom? I can't even get the DVD ROM drive to open.

    Hi hutzut,
Yes, you boot from Tiger Install DVD, choose which installation (in your case, I would choose Erase & Install, not Archive & Install), choose then also Custom Install if you don't want all drivers, languages etc installed.
It's a very easy and fast process, no need to know anything about computers.
    To open the CD drive:
--> restart with the mouse button depressed.
I don't know what is a "sh prompt", but you may want to remember also the Terminal commands to open it:
    drutil tray open
    drutil tray close
    drutil tray eject
and restart from the Install DVD (already in the drive), by keeping the C key depressed.
    Good luck!

  • Recurrent corrupt file system of internal hard disc

    Hi,
on my MacBook Pro Late 08 I get some file system corruption over and over again. Normaly I would guess having a defect hard disc but I have already tried three different discs. The problem always comes back.
I recognize the corruption by having multiple crashes of several applications (Firefox, iPhoto, iWorks, ....) having some exception type of EXCBADACCESS. This type seams to indicated that something cannot be read correctly anymore. After repairing the disk everything works fine again.
Is it normal that MacOS filesystem is not that stable and gets corrupt from time to time? I cannot find out any reproduction pattern so far.

I have exchanged the original disc to a larger 500GB/7200 2 month after getting the new MacBook. To narrow down the problem I switched to a 500GB/5400 another 6 month later. I always moved with a SuperDuper Backup from disk to another. My disc usage is about 90%.
I tent do believe it has something to do with the power management of the Mac. Between a healthy file system and a corrupt one is always one or more system sleeps.
But the output of the disk utility is also weird. Three successive runs state at the end:
    1)
    Invalid node structure
The volume MacBookPro internal could not be verified completely.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
    2)
The volume MacBookPro internal was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
    3)
The volume MacBookPro internal appears to be OK.

  • Firefox corrupts windows file system

Since upgrading to Firefox 32.0, my Acronis Backup stops with the error message
"Backup of file or folder c:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Firefox.Profile>\Cache" failed. File or folder does not exists."
The problem no longer occurs after running chkdsk which implies a file system corruption, but it re-occurs when opening and closing Firefox.
Note that I use hibernation (i.e. I open and close the browser, hibernate, wake up and then note the file system corruption)

Yes, I have checked that the folder is not explicitly specified. Also, after running chkdsk, the backup runs successfully, even if the folder does not exist.
I have run some more tests, and am now very confident that this is indeed a bug.
    Reproduction:
    1) Start & Close Firefox
    2) Run Backup --> Error
    3) Create an empty folder named "Cache"
    4) Run Backup --> OK
    5) Start & Close Firefox --> Folder "Cache" is renamed to "Cache.Trash<Number>"
    6) Run Backup -> Error
    repeat as desired
I have found a temporary fix: When I remove the delete permission on my manually created "Cache" folder, Firefox does create a "Cache.Trash<Number>" folder, but cannot delete the Cache folder. The backup will run in this case.

  • SD File Transfer Corrupts

Hello! Everytime I try and put a significant amount of music on my SD the file system corrupts. Then if I do error recovery under disk tools I lose most of the music. I'm blaming the blackberry at the moment. I don't think it happens when i use a card reader, until I put the card in the blackberry. I've tried this on 2 pc's running windows 7.

What version of Final Cut 6 are you running?
    -paul.

  • Help files for users

I'd like to provide a help facility for users of the desktop programs I'm developing. The last item on the Menu Bar should be Help, and the first item on that menu should lead to instructions on how the program works.
I find it curious that in the tutorials and textbooks I have researched, I haven't found any mention of a Help File System. Is there no standard Java way of presenting user help information?
One obvious solution is to place the information in a set of HTML files. But the missing link is invoking the browser from within a Java desktop application. I've discovered how to do that in Windows using rundll32, but that's implementation dependent. Is there a standard way of asking the default browser to display a given URL?

As cotton says, one can use JavaHelp to provide help information.
Perhaps an easier but dirtier way is to display some information such as an HTML-based help file in a JEditorPane.
Depends on how professional you want your help to look like.

  • Help! System Rescue files corrupt!

I hope someone can help with this - my X61 w/ 32-bit Vista Business has never worked well, with persistent blue screen crashes, system lock-ups, and error messages. After dutifully downloading Windows updates (Vista SP 2 just made things worse) and new drivers I decided to start from scratch and restore the computer to the factory settings - i.e. wipe the hard drive and re-install Windows from the rescue partition. I backed up all my files and went through the steps on the Rescue & Recovery console, only to have the installation fail - it says the Windows files are corrupt and it hangs on the installation every time -sometimes with another blue screen.
So basically this computer is now dead in the water, and unfortunately out of warranty. Please - does anyone know of any way to restore the rescue partition so I can at least re-install the OS that this machine came with? Any suggestions appreciated!

    Addendum:
These two posts to the forum describe my problem pretty accurately:

I'll add that I've tested by RAM and hard drive with built-in and 3rd party utilities and they all seem to be OK. Also tried Spinrite data recovery on the rescue partition and it hasn't helped.
