Created help file either won't open or opens blank when emailed or copied for another user to see it.
Our HR person made a help file she wants to email to someone or copy to a network share.
-If she emails it the other person cannot open it.
-If she copies it even from her desktop where she saved it to the folder with all the other files, it opens blank.
Any help would be appreciated.I think they must be swapping out .html for .chm in DW or something. What the OP describes sure sounds like what happens when you do that.
@dfiore27101
DW doesn't support .chm file types. Adding the extension doesn't compress the images into the file to create a true .chm.
Adding .chm will make a perfectly good .html file stop displaying in DW though.
An easier way to send someone .html help files would be to archive their folder as a .zip then email the .zip. The recipient would then need to extract the archive to view the files in their browser.
I don't know of any way to create real .chm files in DW. -
Searched help files open as a blank page
When I search for something in iWeb's Help it returns the results I'm looking for but when I click on any of the results it only opens a blank page. I migrated iWeb from a previous computer when I purchased in my iMac in 2009 but I never noticed this happening until recently. All my updates are current. I installed iLife 2011 when it came out but that did not include iWeb - unless it caused some problem. Thanks in advance!
iWeb is included in iLife 11. Load that disk again and look for it in the Customize installation window. Remove the current iWeb from the Applications folder and reinstall from the iLife disk. That should get the necessary help files also.

RoboHelp for Word: The Help file opens a blank page
Hello,
The Help files were working fine all these days. Today when i
click on the help on the webpage, it shows a blank page. I am using
RoboHelp for Word X5. I do not get any error message on the screen.
I can just see the progress bar just blinking and also our website
link which says transferring. None of my help files on the live
applications are working
Please help.
Regards
ChandrikaThat link works for me in IE and FF so I think we can rule
out your output.
If the problem is the call, anyone who accesses it via the
link you gave me should be OK and only see the problem when the
help is called via the application.
If the problem is the help, anyone will see it, no matter how
they access the help.
I think both can be ruled out as they do not fit what you
describe. I would therefore be inclined to forget the RH8 idea.
You said
"The clients are having the same problem again. It seems that
the help page keeps refreshing again and again in their systems.
When i checked it at office network, the systems that are connected
through proxy are giving the problem. The other systems which are
not connected through proxy are working fine."
This is consistent but it is something IT will have to
resolve. -
How do I generate a Word document and a PDF from Help files?
Hi,
I am new to RoboHelp HTML, and am using version 8. I updated some Help files, and now I want to generate output. Here are my questions/ or the process I used:
To compile the help, I clicked Generate Primary Layout. Is this correct? I noticed that the date stamp on the xpj file has not changed. The date is still from many months ago. (Why is that? Should it show a recent update date?) However, the files that I updated do reflect the dates when I made the updates. These include art files, an hhp, and htm, js, ldb, pss, cpd files.
To generate a pdf, I clicked Generate PDF. I was not able to generate the PDF at first, but then, I enabled macros in Word 2007 (Trust Center Settings > Enable all macros...and clicked the checkbox, Trust access to the VBA project object model), and clicked Generate PDF. At the end of the generation, I got this error in Word: Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The info you were working on might be lost. Word can try to recover it for you. I closed the dialog and Word generated several blank documents. Microsoft Office Diagnostics was run and found one problem and corrected it. Despite the error message, a pdf was generated. (If you could give me any insight on why I got the error messages, that could be helpful to know).
How do I generate a Word document?
Thank you!
ErinWelcome to our community
Note that RoboHelp is capable of creating a variety of layouts. WebHelp, FlashHelp, AIR Help, Microsoft HTML Help, JavaHelp, Oracle Help, ePub and more.
Any of these layouts may be nominated as the Primary layout. So when you generate the Primary layout, you get whatever has been configured as the Primary layout.
Only certain actions will result in a change to the .XPJ file. The actions are indicative of major changes to the project. So I wouldn't fret the fact that the date time stamp wasn't updated.
Indeed the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe is what you use to create PDF. Generally what happens is that RoboHelp creates a Microsoft Word document as an intermediate file type, then creates the PDF from that. As you might imagine, there are a host of things that can go wrong during the process. I might suggest that you first get a Word document to generate cleanly. Then once you do that, focus on PDF. I know that I typically gen a Word document and stop there. I just open Word and use Word to create the PDF.
If you look at the properties for the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe (View > Pods > Single Source Layouts then right-click the Printed Documentation layout and choose Properties) you will see that PDF, Word or both are options at the top of the dialog.
Hopefully that gives you a nudge in the right direction.
My fellow Adobe Community Expert Peter Grainge has excellent info on Printed Documentation on his site at Grainge.org. Click the link below for that.

Hi
We have released software with a .chm help file. The help
file contains embedded Captivate movies. Some users are having
trouble playing the movies, they see a blank screen where the movie
should be. Clearing the IE cache has a helped some users but not
others. Any ideas?
Thanks

Mac Help file and OSX 10.4.5
HI all and Help if you can, please.
I was prompted by my power PC IMac G5 to upgrade the OS to 10.4.5 which I did by clicking on the link in the window. All seems fine except now I can't open any of my Mac Help topics in the Help window. The window opens as a blank. All the other Help files seem fine. I tried "Chat" with the IMac help team and after finally getting someone to come on line, he suggested I " delete the releated preference files for help", but never told me how to do that so I don't know if it will work or not. Can anyone out there give me an idea of how to get my Mac Help to work? Thanks to all.Hi Mac User,

Set Help file to open to a Title Page?
After compiling, HTML Help file opens to a topic in the
middle of the TOC. How can I set it to open to a Title Page? Now it opens to a black page. The first book has a link to
topic page called Cover Page, with a destination that is Cover
page.htm. Changing the order of the books does not matter; the
first page of the chm is still blank. In the Single Source Layout,
Select Properties, I changed the Default Topic. The properties for
the book, cover page and topic all point to Cover Page.htm as the
destination. Yet a regenerated chm still opens with a blank first
page. -
Reinstalling Help Files With Pacifist
I have been having trouble with the Blank Help Window problem and have tried all the minor fixes with no luck (trashing preference files, etc.). The trouble is usually connected to OS X help but occasionally affects the help connected to other apps as well.
One of the folks who offered advice told me to use Pacifist to reinstall the Help Files in hopes this would cure the problem. I decided recently to follow his advice and try reinstalling the Help Viewer file from Install CD #1 by using Pacifist in hopes that it will fix the problem for once and all.
So I used Pacifist to open the OS X Install disk and then I searched for the file "Help Viewer" using Find. When Find was done there were 16 Help Viewer files in the sidebar window. All but 1 of them had .app tacked on. The one without .app was simply listed as Help Viewer.
Does anybody know whether I select and reinstall all of these files or just some of them?
Thanks!Check out the following for assistance:

I have just bought a new iMac and installed Leopard. However I am having a lot of problems trying to use any of the help tools in Finder. Searches do not bring back any results, and sometimes the window remains blank. Today it displayed the main Mac Help screen, with "What's New in Leopard?" etc., but none of the links work. When I click a link I get an error message saying "Alert Page cannot be found". I guess this could be due to a corrupted install or Help index file, but I have no idea how to fix this. Any suggestions? Many thanks
In case anyone else searches this forum for "Missing Help Files" here's my experience:
I'm too chicken to delete files even though I've a good back up, so I renamed each with "old" inserted in the file names which macjack cited above. There are four files he mentioned. "Deleting" the ~/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder didn't produce any visible. I still got the "Alert" message from Mac Help.
I then went to the set of four ~/Home/Library/Preferences/ files he specified. I found there was no com.apple.helpui.plist file there to delete! Then I "deleted" the remaining three he specified and restarted. Worked like a charm. Mac Help looks to be running as intended.
Thanks, macjack.

On my iMac I can't access the "Mac Help" library. If I go to the help option under the finder, it brings up the help viewer with a blank page. I click on the home button there and it brings up the cover page. After that, clicking on any link does nothing. If I try and do a search, it just has the the little spinning circle next to it and nothing happens. I can go to the other help libraries, like iPhoto and they work just fine.
I tried reinstalling the "CPU Help" package off my install DVD and the same thing happens.
I can use my powerbook to look at the help files, but that's not the point. How do I get them working on my iMac?
Thanks
ChrisTry this from Apple's support pages:
Mac OS X: Can't access Help content, or content is blank or missing links
Learn what to do if you can't get to information in Help, such as Finder or iCal 1.5 Help.
When you open Help, for example, you might see a blank page, or three links instead of four, but none of them work (you might expect to see these working links: What's New, Overview, Contents, Website).
To fix this, follow these steps.
Quit Help Viewer if it is open.
Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Type: ~/Library/Caches/
Tip: "~" means your Home, which you can also get to by going to the Users folder and opening your home folder.
Click Go.
Look for the "com.apple.helpui" folder.
Rename that folder to something else, such as "old Help cache folder".
Open Help Viewer.
You should be able to access the Help content now.
