Help! Finder is constantly relaunching

Hi everyone
I'm having a bit of a disaster at the moment - my G5 Power Mac (running Tiger 10.4.5) seems to have gone crazy, with Finder apparently relaunching itself literally every second.
All the open windows, desktop icons and the toolbar at the top are constantly opening and reopening. The Dock still pops up fine, but if you try and launch anything the program immediately quits. Because Finder keeps opening and reopening, I can't access any folders or drives or menu functions. I can't get to Force Quit, and if I relaunch Finder from the Dock, it does nothing to stop the problem. I've rebooted umpteen times, including totally unplugging the power and any external drives, and as soon as you reach the desktop, the problem starts again.
As I say, it looks as if Finder is constantly relaunching itself. The last thing I did before this happened was to download the Avid codecs for Quicktime and place them in the Quicktime Library folder. I then went to restart my machine, and it was during the shutdown process that it started going haywire.
Any suggestions as to what on earth is going on?
Is there anything I can do during boot up to circumvent this problem or correct it? Once I reach the desktop, I can't do anything.
Do I need to resintall Tiger, or boot up from the Tiger disk perhaps - if so can someone explain to me how to go about it?

Finder constantly relaunching

Hey--
I am running OSX 10.4 on a MacBook Pro. Recently, as I was shutting down my computer, my Finder started constantly relaunching (every 1 second or so). As such, I can't open any programs, open any windows or do anything. Even when I force shut down and restart, as soon as it gets to the desktop, the finder starts automatically relaunching. There are no icons or anything displayed on the desktop. My computer is rendered useless by this problem.
So far, I have tried:
1.) Rebooting
2.) Doing an Upgrade re-install (i.e. just re-installing software without wiping it)
3.) Doing an Archive and Install of the operating system
None of these have worked. I have thought about doing an Erase and Install, but I don't want to lose my data. Anyone have any ideas how to fix the problem?

Wow, you must have worked with PCs a lot!
When I have strange behavior from my MBP I do 5 things in order:
1. Repair permissions (Finder>Go>Utilities>Disk Utility--select your HD, click permission repair)
2. Zap the PRAM (shut off, then turn on holding -Option-P-R until it chimes at least twice)
3. Reset the SMC (turn computer off, remove battery, hold power key for 8 seconds, then restart)
4. Repair permissions from the system disc (insert system disk, reboot holding down "C" key)
5. Run hardware test (insert system disk, boot while holding down "H" key)
After each one of these I see if the machine has been fixed. If not,I go to the next one. After 5, I call Applecare, who then have me repeat the same steps, followed by archive and install.
A couple of things you might think about:
Did you recently add a program/RAM/make any changes to your hardware or software?
Have you tried a safe boot (hold the shift key down while starting up) and repair permissions from there.

New mbp - finder crashes constantly??

My new MBP arrived today. I transferred everything with the Migration Tool and for the most part, I'm ready to go.
BUT.... Finder crashes constantly and isn't really even useable. At first I thought it was the trackpad, but now I see it is any activity in finder crashes it.
Is this a known problem? Is there a fix?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Finder Crashes and Relaunches Every Few Minutes

As the title states, every few minutes, or sometimes less than a minute, Finder crashes and relaunches.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
If you can't do that because of Finder problems try starting in Safe Mode and doing the same.
If neither of these options works then boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume and re-install OS X

Finder Appearing to Relaunch itself, Dock not popping up

I just installed the newest security update on 1/10/2008. After many restarts and a shut down, I still am running into a problem of the Finder appearing to relaunch itself when ask to do normal window function, such as closing a window. I've also noticed this happening when I try to "Get Info" on a file, the animation freezes, and then it looks like the Finder relaunches. Also, when I go to a drop down menu and scroll over actions, such as "Close Window" it does not highlight, and I have to hold my mouse button to keep a drop down menu open. Lastly, my dock is on Auto-Hide, but when I mouse down to bring it up, it remains hidden, so I have to go into settings and turn off Auto-Hide. After it appears, when I rollover each application, it does not bring up the application name. Any comments or advice would be great, thanks.

Sounds like you have more then one issue.
As for the Finder crash, the crash log is the interesting bit of information. Go into /Applications/Utilities/Console.app, click on the "Show Log List" button. In the list that appears, click on ~/Library/Logs->CrashReporter. Copy/paste the contents of the Finder crash log into a reply and we'll see if we can figure out whats going on.

InDesign CS3 Help Menu opens constantly

The InDesign CS3 Help Menu opens constantly every time I click anywhere in a document to do anything.
Such as draw a box, insert type, anything. It virtually renders the program unuseable. I click to make an addition to a doc, travel up to the help menu to close it, do my thing, then repeat for the next action. Reinstalling has not stopped this. I cannot disable the Help Menu (which would be a fine solution BTW). I cannot afford to upgrade to CS4 right now. I am not sure that would stop it anyway. Photoshop, Illustrator, no other program in the CS3 suite exhibits this behavior. Anybody got any ideas? I recently recreated my whole OS and all programs on a new hard drive out of necessity. InDesign was doing this before that rebuild, and it does it now (after the reinstall). CS3 was reinstalled clean. That did solve a serial # issue with Acrobat where it wouldn't launch. I didn't transfer anything from the old hard drive except e-mail and internet settings.

Are you using the default keyboard shortcut set or a custom one? Also, are you using any special mouse, keyboard or tablet input devices?
Try going to Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts->Help menu Product Area and see what the default Help shortcut is. Perhaps it has been set to something crazy like "mouse click". You may just set the Keyboard Shortcuts back to [Default] set and see if that does the trick too.
Alternatively, something either software or hardware related in your setup is frequently triggering that event, which may be the case if you have a non-apple kbd, mouse etc installed.

If the book is not in the Apple store, you will have to get it from another one, such as Amazon, Nook, Kobo, Google, Sony. Each of them has apps to read the books you get from them.

I do not want SP11 (default password length issue on install among other issues exist with this SP). I have 3 other development machines with SP9 and I want to have SP9 to match those other installs. I could not locate the original install that I downloaded from the SDN downloads FTP in May.
Does SAP provide a download of SP9 anywhere? (the service marketplace seems to only have SP13 and SP12 - the SDN only have SP11)

I had to redownload itunes and I bought several songs. I want to add them to my old library because I had several cd's that I had uploaded. Umm. If you wiped the hard drive, then all old libraries are gone unless you have them on backup.

Can you provide us with your computer model number? Take a look in Device Manager to see if there is an Imaging Devices group that includes the webcam. If not, is there an Unknown Device listed?
