Help Finding an Audio Interface

So I'm looking for a device that can take an output from my mac pro (through either usb or maybe optical) and can send it to my two KRK Rokit 5's and my KRK Sub through XLR. Also it needs to have a 1/4" jack to plug my KRK KNS 8400's into. Can someone please help me find the cheapest thing that can do all this?

the cheapest way would be to buy a mini jack to xlr audio lead. you dont need an interface.
the mini jack takes the output from your computer and the xlrs plug into the speakers.
depending on where you are in the world, try studiospares.
using an interface will give you better quality, but not that it matters for the vast majority of situations.

  • Need help finding an audio interface for my old ADAT

    Hello,
I've been using Cakewalk Sonar for about 3 years and recently purchased a Macbook Pro and am making the switch to logic. In Windows I was using a E-mu 1212m PCI audio card that was connected via lightpipe to a Behringer ADA8000 8-channel preamp that has ADAT lightpipe output.
The songs I do are 90% audio with midi only used very sparingly for maybe a piano here and there. I record drums with a 6 mic setup (2 overheads, 2 on snare, one bass, one hi-hat). I'm looking for a new audio interface to use with my Macbook Pro. I'm also looking at purchasing Logic Express as it seems like the only things in Pro that affect me is more channels than I use on songs.
I would really like to spend no more than maybe 400-600 dollars if possible. Based on reading these forums, the best thing may be for me to get a MOTU 828 MKII off eBay (they seem to be available for about 500) or PreSonus Firepod.
I've heard that some people love the PreSonus Fireface, but I'm not sure how the Firepod compares. Are the converters on the Firepod and 828 comparable or is the 828 significantly better?
Also, my behringer preamps seem OK but I wonder if the Firepod would probably have better sounding ones, I think I only paid 2 or 300 dollars for the Behringer one.
Any feedback at all would be great. Alot of great stuff on this forum I'm just having a tough time figuring out if I should ditch my existing ADAT preamp for a Firepod or use it with the 828 basically.
    Thanks,
    -Jayme

  • Help with M-Audio interface and GB

First time with any kind of audio interface and GB. I just got a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB and am a little confused by the monitor settings. Been to the web site and read the manual and they said turn the monitoring off in garageband so I don't hear double monitoring. My question is, is it possible to record and hear the effect I have chosen as well. With monitor off all I can hear is the dry signal.I never had to worry about this before since I was going directly into the Mac, no interface. Is there a FAQ or web site that can help a newb like me with these most basic questions?

Sounds like good advice Christoph. I have been only recording bass thus far, very few effects and no latency yet. I was puzzled by the M-Audio manual that says to turn off the software monitor but on the M-Audio web site forum an expert says to turn on the monitoring in garageband. This will all makes sense to me soon I hope.

Oh I get that... we all have to work within what we can afford.. and you are not the only one who budgets like that for sure.. but here's the thing..
Note: What follows is just a personal opinion. based on my own personal experienes and those I have worked with here and elsewhere.
You are using a $1000-$2000+ Mac... an App worth $200+ plus extra for whatever 3rd party plugins you have bought.. extra bucks for a Midi controller...and yet you are only willing/able to spend $125+ on a combined Audio/Midi inteface?
It's kind of like buying a $100K Ferrari and then putting $50 tires on it..... and expecting to get the best or even just average performance from your car? It simply doesn't work that way in reality..... and trying to make such a low budget for an Audio / Midi interface.. will only lead to possible issues in the future....
There is a good reason why it tends to be the same audio/midi interfaces which are owned by people who also report issues with the current OS X version and/or Logic .. The cheaper products simply aren't so well supported or designed/developed as the more expensive ones... and so thats what happens...
Look at the current issues going on with Mavericks for example..
Mackie/M-Audio/Avid/Digidesign/Tascam are all having driver/hardware issues of one kind or another..to differing degrees..with various products they sell.. with little sign they are close to properly fixing things..  Focusrite are, at least,  working hard with Apple to resolve their driver issues...but currently they are having some issues with certain products in their range too..  The cheapo Midi-USB2 cable type interfaces that sells for $20-$40 are all non starters/buggy as heck.. when used with ML/Mav and/or USB3 ports.. and most of these cheap products have the exact same issues every time OSX undergoes a major update! Sometimes they are fixed eventually and some times they aren't. In some cases the companies simply release a new replacement product leaving owners of the older versions.. left to their own devices.. (sic) and without any recourse or solution.. other than to buy a replacement or not being able to upgrade their Software/OS X
So... here is what i would suggest...
I'd rather buy a used Motu (or one of the other brands out there that are known to be reliable) for a couple of hundred bucks or so.. on eBay than buy a new cheaper interface.... but of course the choice/decision is yours.

  • Help choosing an Audio Interface Please

I am new to the mac world, and GB'08 is my first exposure to computer-based recording. I have been using the internal mic to record guitar and vocals, but want to upgrade so I can get better quality. I am not a pro, and am not looking to spend a bunch of money on this. I currently have a Tascam US-122, but although I have th most recent driver (and it shows up in system pref, GB, etc.) I cannot get it to work properly. I'm ready to move on.
I have found 2 devices that I think would be sufficient for my purposes, the Miglia Harmony Audio Interface (firewire) and the Imic (USB). Does any one have any ecperience working with either of these? Preferences? Other recommendations?
I have the imac 20", 2.4ghz, 2gb RAM with Leopard OSX.
    thanks.

    Michael
I am a singer songwriter who uses GB to do my songs. I bought a 10 input Behringer mixer for $70 and the iMic for $30. I run the guitar and mic into the mixer and the tape outs (Y Card - two RCA outs to 1/8" in) into the iMic. I get really good sound. iMic is a 2 way device so you can monitor also. Also, I converted all my bands old cassette recordings to MP3 using the iMic. And those recordings sound really great. So I speak from experience that the A to D converter in the iMic is pretty good. I owned a studio in LA back in 80's so I know the difference good sound and bad.
Another idea would be to buy a $50 Behringer mixer and run your audio into the audio in jack on your computer. Have never tried this but I am guessing it would be better than using the internal Mic (the worst possible scenario).
And the good thing about the iMic is....it just works and it is cheap. So later if you get money you can spring on a "pro" interface like the Apogee Duet.
The absolute key to getting a good sound is to have a "hot signal" going into your computer so you don't have to crank up the input gain and introduce a bunch of noise. The Behringer mixers come with XLR inputs for your Mic with ok gain. I actually plug my Mic into a Symetrix preamp to make the signal "hot" and then feed it into the Behringer.
    Good luck!!

  • Help! which Audio Interface to buy?

    Hi,
I have just got garageband and have fiddled with it for a few months now so Im comfortable with it. I now wnat to connect my Condenser Mic (RODE NT1-A) which will need phantom power and my electric guitar . Everything else will be recorded with the inbuilt soft synths on GB. I know nothing of audio interfaces and am only familar with M Audio Fast track as a brand.
I want to spend no more than £100 ( or less on ebay second hand) but Im confused by the vast choice. I was tempted by the cheaper M audio fast track with 1 xlr input and 1 for guitar. Does any one use one and if so will it be powerful enough for my condenser mic with phantom power ?
    Cheers
    Paul

I use a Presonus FireStudio Mobile with my Rode Mic's. http://www.presonus.com/products/FireStudio-Mobile I use an NT5 and NT2000. Both work great with the unit.. Its FireWire though which you may not have on your machine. I have used an early M-Audio Fast Track and would not recomend it to others. Cheers

Hey guys,  just having major issues setting up my recording software to work in boot camp  my usb audiophile seems to be connecting and functioning with Windows 7 but the audio quality is really poor with distortion, i have seen that this is a regular problem and would much appreciate a solution or a link to one that would be a great help

    Thanks

GT Player Express is a real-time standalone application allowing to use your computer at studio or on the stage as powerful guitar multi effect processor. It offers ReWire support, for connecting to ReWire applications such as Live or Reason. Track Recording support allows recording of the processed or clean sound. Recorded tracks are automatically added to the current playlist. GT Player is functional as a VST plug-in which can be used in all VST host applications such as Nuendo, Cubase, Live, DSP Quattro, Spark, etc. With Keyboard Transpose, MIDI notes can be triggered from your computer keyboard with transpose capability.
According what I read, this app is VST only, so it won't work with GB, sorry. GB uses AU (Audio Units) and not VST.

  • Is there an audio interface for Imac with Leopard???

    Hi Guys,
Im new here. Just got my IMac 24" 2.8ghz 10.5.1 Leopard last week. I love everything about it but Im having a real hard time finding an audio interface to use with Garageband. I tried the M-Audio Firewire Solo...found out quick it is not compatible. So I figure what the ** i'll downgrade and go with the M-Audio Mobilepre USB audio interface...usb, no fuss no muss right...WRONG! It doesnt work either! I tried downloading the most current driver from M-audio's website but still no go. I guess Leopard and intel machines are hard to please. Also the audio interface has to have phantom power to run a condensor mic. So my questions to you guys is this:
    1. Are there any other audio interface options out there with phantom power for $200 or less that will run with my Imac ?
    2. If not, why in the ** would Apple design a machine with Garageband then not set it up to accept any reasonably priced audio interface currently on the market? Tell me Im just uninformed...say it isnt so!
Sorry if it sounds like Im aggravated...I am! I had hoped to get some recording time in this weekend but its looking doubtful now.
I did post this in the Garageband discussion as well...thanks.
Any help with the mobile preamp, other interface recommendations, etc. are greatly appreciated!

Could you be a little more specific about what you mean
by "not compatible" -- is it a lack of Leopard drivers,
    or what?
I haven't fiddled with GarageBand, but I have been using
[M-Audio's Fast Track Pro|http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackPro-main.html] with audacity, and it seems to
work OK. (My beta-release ov audacity has some stability
    problems, but I don't think they're M-Audio-related.)
Did you check M-Audio's web site for Leopard-compatible
drivers? The one for Fast Track Pro wasn't released 'til
mid December, if I remember correctly.
Although firewire is probably technically superior, I
went with USB to avoid conflicts between the audio box
and my Firewire external HD. There have been too many
reports of flakey operation with iMac firewire drivers.
I like the Fast Track Pro, but I'm not sure it would
be my first choice if I had it to do over. It's main
drawback is that it's USB 1.1 -- so, there are some
tradeoffs in the number of simultaneous I/O channels
    versus data rate and resolution.
I've listed a few other USB options worth exploring
below -- I believe they all have phantom power:
    [E-Mu 0404 USB|http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=610&subcategory=611&produc t=15185]
    [Edirol UA-25|http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=704&ParentI d=114]
    [Line6 TonePort UX2|http://line6.com/toneportux2>
I'm not sure what the situation is WRT Leopard-compatible
drivers for any of the above -- you'll have to check the
    manufacturers' web sites.
Check amazon.com and MusiciansFriend.com for prices; also,
be sure to check the customer comments on MusiciansFriend.
They're often very thorough and informative -- typically
    much better than Amazon's.

  • Trouble with audio interface (E-MU 0404) on OS X Lion

After I install "OS X Lion" from "Mac App Store" system can't find my audio interface ("Creative E-MU 0404 USB"), I see Audio Card in System Profiler, but it doesn't apear in "System Preference - Audio".
Also, "Creative Proffessional Software" doesn't run under Lion, because it's a "PowerPC" application, but I install update from June, 2010.
Is it possible that driver was written for "PPC", and now "Lion" doesn't support it, and what should I do?

Quite frankly, having to switch to 32-bit mode, to use My 0404 Audio interface, that is btw still being sold alongside competitor interfaces in the same price range (From Cakewalk, Tascam etc. etc.), that have OS X Lion (or at least intel native) drivers that allow their cards to be used with maximum efficiency, is completely unacceptable.
I wrote the tech support, and (like everyone else I've heard about) I got a copy/paste answer, saying that the tech-supporters in E-MU had no idea what the plans of the development team were, in regards to updating the drivers for the E-MU 0404.
Here's the reply I got from them, when I tried to get some clarity on all of this:
           Thomas,
We are sorry to inform you at this time Technical Support has not been informed by product development, as to when
OSX Lion drivers will be available. Technical support is not the place where E-MU discusses or discloses upcoming
product development or non released features and functions. That is done via marketing, usually through an official
press release, and usually done at a trade show event and/or posted on our website.
Please remember the more information you provide, including previous correspondence in your mail, helps in troubleshooting and solving the problem you are experiencing.
    Thank You
    Casey
    EMU Systems
Don't forget to check out http://www.EMU.com for your latest drivers, and updates, and EMU Products. E-MU is now featured on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/user/EMUsupport and FaceBook: http://www.facebook.com/EMUSystems
and I don't blame the tech-support. The entire thing has been thrown on their shoulders, as E-MU seemingly couldn't give enough of a !#€% to even update them about the situation.
I suppose this problem could have been averted a loooooooong time ago, by simply updating the drivers for the unit, when Apple went Intel (I suppose the 0404 is pre 2005, when Apple changed to Intel Architecture? If not, this is even more of an outrage).
As many others, the fact that the drivers were PPC and not Intel makes me wonder if I've been running the interface all this time, with un-needed latency.
This is definitely the last time I buy anything from E-MU, or Creative for that matter.

  • Audio Interface that works for the new 10.6.7 Mac software?

I just bought a new Macbook Pro and I am having trouble finding an Audio Interface for recording vocals/guitars that will actually work!!  Most of these companies have not worked out the driver for them yet....Thanks

    In addition to Stedman's spot-on reply --
When you buy an upgrade disk, all updates in that OS can be found on Software Update.
For instance, I bought Snow Leopard at 10.6.
All other updates have been free and downloadable.  So I'm not a 10.6.7.
    10.4 (Tiger) went to 10.4.11.
    10.5 (Leopard) went to 1.5.8
10.6(Snow Leopard) is currently at 10.6.7.
Now, when Lion come out (the next major upgrade of OSX), I will have to pay to go to 10.7.
After that, updates are free til 10.8 comes out.

  • Help setting up my audio interface with logic pro x

    Hi everyone,
I am a newbie with regards to home recording and using Logic Pro X and I need some help and advice about setting up my home recording set up for the first time. I want to connect my synthesizer Korg Triton Extreme to my Audio Interface Steinberg UR22 to my Apple Imac computer.
What I would like is if I can create backing tracks or use pre-set sounds or drum patterns from my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer and then transfer them onto Logic Pro X to help me compose songs.
How should I go about doing this? And what settings should be applied to Logic Pro X so that I can hear the songs as they are being played and recorded?
So far I have connected my synthesizer's two outputs to the two inputs on my Steinberg UR22 Audio Interface. I have also connected the USB point on the audio interface to my Apple Imac computer. But when I have tried to add a drum track from the Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer I cannot seem to add any of the drum sounds. Nothing appears to be recorded despite me trying several times. I cannot hear any sound coming from the audio interface either despite having a pair of headphones plugged into it.
I would also like to find a way to synchronise the drum tracks I want to record from my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer to Logic Pro X. So that when I click on the record button on Logic Pro X the synthesizer track automatically starts playing and recording on Logic Pro X. Whats the best way to do this? And will I need a Midi cable for any of the things I want to do?
    Many thanks,
    James.

    Hi James
I just got myself a macbook pro and logic pro X, and I also have a Triton Extreme and the UR22. So I know what the learning curve can be like - it's been a long time since I've used a sequencer in a computer.
I assume you are aware of the difference between audio and midi? With your current setup, all you can do is play your Triton and record the sounds as audio loops - you should be able to hear the Triton through headphones plugged into the UR22, and (assuming you have installed the UR22 driver) you can also hear the Triton through your computer speakers (or headphone output) once you tell Logic there is sound coming in from the UR22.
If you want to be able to play the sounds in logic pro, or transfer drum patterns (which are in midi format), you will definitely need midi cables (you may be able to use midi by connecting the Triton's USB out to your computer, but having not tried that, I don't know if it will work - it does on more recent synths)
