Help? - Fixing/gluing torn silicone keyboard key-press spring (pix)

Okay, I know this is probably new territory for a lot of folks, but I wanted to clean up the Space Bar's 'action' (I was having to hit it dead center to get it to activate} so I pried the key cap off (not a huge issue) and in the cleaning process found grime on the little, translucent/clear keypress 'nipple' spring. I pinched it it with thumb and forefinger to pick up the grime, and accidentally tore off part of the silicone spring.
/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/637/6374895-1.jpg
Of course I need the top back on to make the contacts work right when pressing the key.
/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/637/6374895-2.jpg
Does anyone know of a way to either buy a whole, intact replacement nipple/spring and glue it back in place, or what kind of flexible glue I could use to join these parts again and still have it flex?

I couldn't stand it... I had to try it. It dried for a couple hours, I guess...
First, re-install "scissors" (the white plastic parts). (Please note, this shot was from before the glue-job). There are two things to note, here. The first thing to make sure of is that the metal tab hooks over the bottom of the scissors and fits into the associated notch (see the long, white rectangle at the lower left scissors assembly). Once that is in place, get the pins on the sides of the upper arms into the holes in the metal tabs at the upper part of the assembly. (Red circles)
Being careful to keep the bottom tab in place, angle one of the side pins into its hole, then flex the other inward and pop it into its hole.
Below, preparing to re-install the key-cap for the space bar:
Its orientation is flipped head over heels, toward the trackpad, and that will be reversed to reassemble. The red arrow shows the direction of the flip I am about to do. The metal bar with "C" shaped ends will end up closer to the LCD display, the bar with "L" shaped ends will end up closer to the trackpad. Get the legs up like a cockroach on its back.
Note: The "Xs" are to show you where NOT to put the metal bar with "C" ends, if you take it off temporarily. Those "grippers" will grab the "scissors" at the right time.
Now, flip it over, and make sure the "C" shaped ends go under the metal tabs as shown, below:
Next, orient the bar with the "L" shaped ends so that as you tap the bar-ends in-and-under the space-bar key-cap, the "L" ends will insert themselves into the holes (see the one that the red arrow points to). Tug toward yourself a little to keep the "C" ends under the tabs.
If everything has gone well, all you will need to do is press down hard at the two ends and the middle of the plastic key-cap until you hear a faint snap-on sound or two at each position -- that's the "grippers" (see the Xs above) grabbing hold of the pins on the scissors.
When you are done, your Space bar will be pressed high up by the silicon spring, at the same level as the other keys.
(Aside: I just got this last week at a very good price, but the space bar really sucked big-time. It now works perfectly at both ends and the middle. If it fails on me, I will look for this thread and post again, the day it happens).

  • KEY PRESS ISSUES

    I own a Pre Plus on Verizon. I have read the numerous posts describing issues with keyboard key press difficulties. What I haven't seen, is any resolution to the problem. Personally, The keyboard size is OK. The unreliable key press issues are driving me nuts. The worst key on my Pre+ is the "e" key and some others, mostly on the top row of keys. I first press, nothing, press again, maybe nothing or multiple entries of "e", The "y" is second worst. Same issues. Is ANYBODY doing anything to resolve this problem?

    The last software update 1.4.11 addressed this issue on the Verizon Palm Pre Plus. If you are on earlier software version you need to update your device to the latest SW version. If you are on the latest SW version you may have a hardware problem with the device. You should go to Device Info from your launcher, tap the drop-down menu, choose Tests, then Interactive Tests, then test your keypad for problems. If this test fails then you should get a replacement device from Verizon.

    Sounds like it could be a hardware problem.
    Try a restart or reset to see if that helps. If not, contact Apple Support.
    Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
    Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • Firefox is Hanging (not full crashing) every time I press a keyboard key.. can't type URLs, can't scroll. Problem started this week and remains reproducible sadly.

    Firefox hangs (freezes) when I press keyboard keys on my laptop (and only then).
    Can't type URLs or scroll with the keyboard, for instance. Hence why this is being typed up on Internet Explorer. The problem is that my version of IE isn't registering Flash and/or Java as being fully active and up to date and I use Firefox more often.
    This problem only appeared this week but now occurs every time; and has persisted after uninstalling and reinstalling (personal options uninstalled).
    Firefox version most recent 3.6 iteration; 3.6.13
    HP G62 Notebook PC with 2GB RamDDR2 and Athlon AMD II P320 Dual Core Processor;
    System running Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit
    I can't even copy and paste because Ctrl+C is a keypress!
    Please help me?

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

    Can somebody point me to what I need to use to
    intercept all the 'keys' for an application.
    At the moment I have set Focus to parts of the
    application when the Mouse is over it, and then get
    the Keys with a KeyListener.
    Is there a way to get the keys, as long as the Java
    app is active.
    - Its an image display program, and I want to use keys
    for - next image , zooom etc etc.
    If soemone could just point me to the right part of
    the API to look in?java.awt.Toolkit.addAWTEventListener()
    then use the mask defined in AWTEvent.KEY_EVENT_MASK to listen to all the events.

  • No sound when press physical keyboard keys

    Hello ! By clicking on the physical keyboard keys on my Blacberry Passport no sound ( tone) as when you press the virtual keys ( numbers, symbols, ....). And how are you ? What could be the problem? Is there a sound when you press the physical keys ?
    Solved!

    Hi @SPBU
    By design, audible 'typing noise' will not occur when pressing any of the physical keys.
    Audible noise will only occur when using the virtual keyboard. Thanks!

  • Backlight key presses not detected, OPTIMUS, wiki didn't help

    I am using a Razer Blade 14" with linux-ck kernel (although I have tested in the main kernel and the issue remains).
    The keyboard brightness settings keys are not detected by X at all (using xev reports no keycodes when I press them).
    However, the driver is getting that information. And in the same type as other function keys (such as sound up/down - which are detected correctly).
    I know this because, while investigating the workings of the touchpad, I ran the razer-test script found in:
    http://fxchip.net/RazerBlade/
    (slightly modified because the device ID is 0x011D in the 14").
    It distinguishes normal key presses from Macro Keys. Function keys in this laptop are macro keys. When pressing volume down, I get the following report:
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
      Extra key: FN
    04 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 ea 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
    04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    When pressing brightness up/down, I get the following report:
    04 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 70 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 6f 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
    04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    (note that the last part just signals that I let go of the FN key)
    My idea was to try to find the keycodes through xev and then map them manually. However, this was unsuccessful since xev reports no input when I press brightness up/down (while volume up/down works).
    This is where I'm lost - the keyboard drivers seems to just be ignoring them.
    Any help appreciated . Let me know what I can post if it's of any help!
    Cheers,
    Rodrigo
    EDIT:
    My laptop uses optimus hardware, and I'm using the integrated Intel Graphics card.
    I have tried all the methods in the wiki but none of them worked:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight#Overview
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ter_resume.
    It's also worth noting that I do have control over the backlight with software - the FN+F8/F9 key bindings are the ones that are just completely ignored by the driver.

    Hey. If you aren't using the nvidia graphics card then this works on mine.
    Edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf by adding
    Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
    Xorg normally automatically selects the backlight device. On mine it ued acpi_video0 instead of intel_backlight.
    Hope that helps!
    Thanks, but the challenge is, to get nvidia prop. drivers working.
    I think, I tracked the problem down to some backlight issue, probably a firmware issue with the laptop model.
    On ubunutu, ideapad backlight modules gets loaded, on arch, it uses the intel-bl. As it stands to reason, backlight settings are too dim when starting X.
    I am about to test nvidia-bl from AUR.

  • Cannot Boot From Optical Drive By Pressing Keyboard Keys

    I finally went from Leopard to Snow Leopard (SL) by doing a clean install.  But I found I was not able to boot from the install disk by the normal procedure -- restarting and pressing the Option or C keys.  Before the SL install, I had a volume structure problem on my HD and tried to use the Leopard install DVD to repair the drive.  I was unable to do that by using the normal boot up procedure.
    Any ideas on why I can't boot from the optiical drive by pressing the designated keyboard key(s)?

    You can load your EFI firmware from here (get the correct version!)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
    And use this method to install it
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
    I'll admit  frankly I don't know exactly what goes on in the deeper levels of Mac.
    I do know this when a Mac first boots it:
    1: Does a POST test, memory etc.
    2: Runs hardware firmware
    3: Runs EFI firmware loaded into special memory from the EFI partition (now erased in your case)
    4: Boots OS X
    I also know it takes two reboots to get the changes in EFI to "stick" as I've installed programs into EFI for special booting attributes.
    SO what I'm thinking here is you cleared your EFI special memory by not haviing a EFI partition anymore and rebooting twice???
    Perhaps your firmware wasn't installed correctly before?
    I've never encountered a problem like yours, it's exceedingly rare, however Apple does offer the links above for some reason one needs to reinstall their EFI firmware, I only assume it goes into the special memory or on a new EFI partiton on the boot drive it might create.
    Sorry but that's the extent of my knowledge, Lion killed my test machine so I can't replicate your issue to fix it.
    I hope that assists, please get back if it worked.

  • Not sure how to explain but mac 27" desktop - keyboard and track pad safari and chrome keys pressed sending me different places

    Basically, if  iam opening an email in gmail it opens a tab for the email or if I am typing a password it opens documents. Trackpad and keyboard keys opening things I did not open.  Please help. I've restarted twice and it isn't helping. I've replaced batteries. Thinking it's internal and not the keyboard or track pad. thank you.

    Sorry it is hard to explain. I am working form my laptop bc I can't get anywhere on internet bc of keys and trackpad or  open anything I want to open.

  • Using InputMap and ActionMap to detect any key pressed...plz help

    Hi,
    I am quite new to Java. I have a tiny problem. I wanna put an actionlistener into a JTextField, so it printout something whenever a key is pressed (when the textField is selected).
    I can only get it to print if I assign a specific key to pressed...example below (works):
    JTextField searchBox = new JTextField();
    InputMap imap = searchBox.getInputMap();
    ActionMap amap = searchBox.getActionMap();
    imap.put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_A, 0), "pressed");
    amap.put("pressed", new AbstractAction() {
              public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                   System.out.println("TYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE");
    HOWEVER, when i change keystroke to any key pressed, it doesn't work. Example below(doesn't work):
    JTextField searchBox = new JTextField();
    InputMap imap = searchBox.getInputMap();
    ActionMap amap = searchBox.getActionMap();
    imap.put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED, 0), "pressed");
    amap.put("pressed", new AbstractAction() {
              public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                   System.out.println("TYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE");
    Somebody plz helps me. I am really confused how to use KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED. I thought it would work the same way as KeyEvent.VK_A...if i can't use KEY_PRESSED for that purpose, what KeyEvent do I use?
    Thank you very much in advance.

    Sounds like you want a KeyListener.
    textField.addKeyListener(new KeyListener() {
        public void keyTyped(KeyEvent e) {
            System.out.println("Key typed.");
        public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) {
            System.out.println("Key pressed.");
        public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) {
            System.out.println("Key released.");
    });See the API documentation for more information.

  • Multiple key press's with Bluetooth Keyboard

    I'm ready to update my mac to a new G5 imac and fancy getting the wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse with it.
    I have one question, has anyone experienced problems when holding down multiple keys on the keyboard and moving the mouse all at once (Using illustrator)?
    In my office I have the misfortune of having to use a PC, I have had a number of wireless keyboard and mouse combos, all of them when using Illustrator and photoshop can not handle multiple key press's and mouse movement.
    ie if I'm duplicating an object by dragging a copy of it across the screen, on the PC it will work but it always "releases" after a couple of seconds and drops the copy in the where I don't want it which gets very frustrating (this only happens with wireless).
    As I do a lot of work at home, I hoping this wont be the case with the mac's bluetooth K & M.
    thanks
    Russell

    The shift key works just fine on my Bluetooth keyboard.  So I would imagine this is an issue with your keyboard.
