Help for a rookie 3120 Classic user please

Just purchased a 3120 classic.  wish I had checked here first as the backlighting thing (or lack of) is really annoying.  My question is - are you able to set a signature on your outgoing text messages? my very old Sanyo allowed me to have my name automatically at the end of all texts I sent, which I found convenient. Thanks in advance for your help.

You can't do that but you can compromise by creating and saving message template with your name at the end and creating all your messages from that template but I don't think you can set a shortcut to the template itself for your standby screen so getting to the the point where you actually start typing in your messages will now be a few extra clicks

  • Help for technically challenged powermac G3 user?

    Hi,
    My last entry gained no response.. So, I'll try again. My OS 8.6 has become obsolete in this faster paced world. I am in the need of at least X to use my new Epson 4490 photo scanner. It is also recommended I upgrade/update to Mozilla, safari, or?? for better access on the internet.
    My dilemia: finding a trustworthy ebay(er) with 9. then 10.whatever.. and is "classic" something else entirely? A mac tech. told me; it would be around 3-4 hundred to build a DVD-rom and install: with/ purchase Tiger, and purchase more memory. But this is where I get confused...Will I lose my CD-rom, and Zip drives in the process? And, will I no longer, with ease, be able to use my design software: (yes, they are outdated.. but still work fine)? And, since I am obviously not very tech.savy; will I be causing myself alot of issues along the way with old software vs newer OS's/X that will drive me crazy. I just want to create!
    It has been said buy a new computer ! This isn't ALWAYS the best solution IS IT? Thanks for Reading...signed Hold Out
    powermac G3   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    Hi, short -
    ...and is "classic" something else entirely?
    Not for your machine. Classic is a full install of OS 9.1 (or 9.2.1 or 9.2.2). When the machine is booted to OSX, OS 9 can be used in the Classic mode; in that mode it runs as a program in order to provide an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run.
    The OS 9 install remains bootable as an OS - you can choose to switch the one you are booted to simply by selecting the other in Startup Disk, then restarting the machine.
    A mac tech. told me; it would be around 3-4 hundred to build a DVD-rom and install: with/ purchase Tiger, and purchase more memory.
    The Mac tech is a bit misinformed, or uninformed, about the need for a DVD drive. Yes, Tiger (OSX 10.4) comes on DVDs - and your machine does not have a bootable DVD drive. However, the DVDs can be exchanged for a set of CDs - there's a link to arrange that in the upper middle of this page -
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
    The published minimum RAM requirements for Tiger is 256MB - that's doable, but a bit low realistically. If you plan on continuing to use your OS 9 apps (and not replacing them with OSX-native ones), you will be using Classic - for that, a realistic minimum is 512MB of RAM. Your B&W G3 can use up to 1.0GB of RAM.
    Will I lose my CD-rom, and Zip drives in the process?
    It should not be necessary to remove either.
    And, will I no longer, with ease, be able to use my design software: (yes, they are outdated.. but still work fine)?
    Don't know - that depends on the software. Many OS 9 programs will work fine in Classic; some may not, and then the option is to either replace them with OSX-native versions, or reboot the machine into OS 9 to use them.
    ...will I be causing myself alot of issues along the way with old software vs newer OS's/X that will drive me crazy.
    Don't know - depends a lot on your ability to learn. OSX is a new OS - it is not built on the same core as OS 9 and the earlier Mac OS's were. Lots of things are done differently as far as the OS is concerned. As long as you accept that it is a new OS, and not a fancy upgrade of OS 9, you should be okay after you get used to it.
    As far as purchasing OS 9 goes, make sure that you get a retail OS 9 Install CD - those have a white label with a large gold 9 on them. Other CDs are model-specific, and will not work on your machine.
    You can get any version retail OS 9 Install CD, then update it as needed using download updaters. However, if your time and effort is worth something, you'd probably be better off getting a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD (there is no retail OS 9.2.2 Install CD) - once installed, that OS would need very little, if any, updating.
    You can often get retail OS 9 Install CD's at sites like these -
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html - Apple Reseller
    http://www.applerescue.com/
    EBay is another possibility.
    Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD - those are white, with a large gold 9 on them; the retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.
    In case you need the updaters -

    Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
    Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
    Comments -
    Important - make sure the firmware on your machine has been updated before installing OS 9. You can get that firmware update via a link in this article -
    Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
    Be sure your RAM is good. You can download and run DIMM First Aid to verify it.
    Be sure you have sufficient space available on your hard drive. OSX 10.4 (Tiger) needs about 3GB to install. OSX runs best when there is at least 5GB free space on the drive (it needs that to use as file swap space, for its implementation of virtual memory, and to automatically defragment files on-the-fly). So, be sure you have about 8GB free space on the drive before installing OSX.

  • I need help for all you wise Mac users... please

    Yesterday, my beloved Mac started acting strangely. Just before that, I uploaded some photos my daughter emailed to my yahoo address. I placed the 8 photos in IPhoto, then tried to go back to Pogo.com where I spend most of my puter time. (Pogo is very Java-based, so I empty the cache, delete cookies and temp files regularly.) Pogo home page just barely loaded, very slow, and none of the games would open. When I tried to stop a game from loading, it froze. I finally had to Force Quit Safari.
    In the past when Safari has acted up, the first, and most times the last thing I do is repair disk in Disk Utility. That did nothing to help this new problem. So I came here and started following suggestions I found. So far (with no luck fixing the problem) I have:
    1. Made sure Javascript is enabled in Safari/Pref/Security. It was.
    2. Trashed cookie.plist, then restarted Safari
    3. Trashed Safari cache folder in Library/Caches/Safari, then restarted Safari
    4. Booted from Install disk, repaired HD in Disk Utility (disk was fine, verified no problems)
    5. Did the Apple Hardware test, that was fine (thank goodness!)
    6. Installed Shiira to see if it had the same slow, hang, freeze that Safari has. It does. So, in fact, does Firefox.
    I'm sure there were a few other things I tried, but can't remember them now. What the heck is going on with my browsers? And how can I fix them? Help, please.
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You have done your homework but perhaps it's the Safari preference file... they can become corrupted. Locate this file; com.apple.safari.plist
    It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to your Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it still acts up, drag that com.apple.safari.plist file to the Trash. It's the culprit. Reboot your iBook. And your Mac will create a new Safari.plist file for you. You will have to reset your Safari preferences but it just might do the trick.
    If this doesn't do the trick, post back. ** You will get more feedback... just be patient.

  • Help for a female non logic user!

    Hi all, I've posted this in here in the hope that all you Logic users will be able to help.
    I have a MacBook Pro and I want to play a movie from it to my v. old TV (PAL).
    I have seen that you can get the DVI to Video Adapter from the Apple Store. If I look at the description for the Apple DVI to Video Adapter is says I can use on a MacBook Pro but no mention of PAL. If I look at the Apple PAL DVI to Video Adapter it mentions PAL but no compatibility with a MacBook Pro.
    So can I use either?
    If I can what cables do I need from the adapter to the back of my TV/DVDr?
    Don't want to buy an AppleTV or an expensive projector.
    Would much appreciate your help.
    Hayley

    Hi, Hayley. I had another thought later. Could you burn the movie to a DVD and use a player to watch it? The burn folder [partof the mac os] will do it, but a more sophisticated program is called toast. That will burn cds, dvds, etc, but it costs money. In Australia its about $180. I'm not sure whether you could load the origianl file into Idvd or imovie, but they might be cheaper, easier options, but I'm not sure if they're applicable cos I don't know exactly what you're doing. Apart from toast, all the others I've mentioned come with OS X, so they're free. Better on the wallet! If I can think of anything else, I'll write some more. All the best. Scorpii.

  • Help for a British NTL internet user.

    Hello guys, my powerbook takes the internet wirelessly from an Airport Express station that is connected (via ethernet) to a old desktop pc. Such pc takes the internet from a blue little device which I have been told to be an sort of modem. The NTL set box, which is in another room, is attached with a long cable to that blue device.
    I was wondering if I can install some sort of modem-router in order to provide both computers with internet connection independently from one another. As you know, the pc has to be on for me to have internet in my mac.
    Also, I feel that sometimes the simple usage of the pc interferes with my internet connection (which I use a lot iChat videoconferences and needs to be optimum).
    Having said all that I mean to ask if any of you know what device should I get.
    I know that our household internet speed is supposed to be 3Mb, but I feel nothing close to that in my PB. The pc browses the internet way faster.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Does the blue box have a make/model on it ? It sounds like it might be a router of some sort as the set-top-box usually has an ethernet output on it.
    You could always add a wireless card to the desktop PC and have the Airport plugged into the NTL line and have the Airport share the connection for you and both computers would access the net wirelessly through the Airport Express without needing either computer to be on.

  • Need Help for Java Homework Assignment, Can someone Please help me ?

    This is the program that I am supposed to write, and I am terrible confused, as it takes at least 3 different files.
    Write a class named GroceryList that representss a person's list of items to buy from the market, and another class named GroceryItemOrder that represents a request to purchase a particular item in a given quantity. (I.E. four boxes of cookies).
    **The GroceryList class should use an array field to store the grocery items, as well as keeping track of its size (number of items in the list so far). Assume that a grocery list will have no more than 10 items. A GrocerList object should have the following methods:
    public GroceryList()
    Constructs a new empty grocery list.
    public void add(GroceryItemOrder item)
    Adds the given item order to this list, if the list is not full (i.e., has fewer than 10 items).
    public double getTotalCost()
    Returns the total sum of all grocery item orders in this list.
    The GroceryItemOrder class should store an item quantity and a price per unit. A GroceryItemOrder object should have the following methods:
    public GrocerItemOrder(String name, int quantity, double pricePerUnit)
    Constructs an item order to purchase the item with the given name, in the given quantity, which costs the given pricer per unit.
    public double getCost()
    Returns the total cost of this item in its given quantity. I.E. 4 boxes of cookies that cost 2.30 per unit, have a total cost of 9.20.
    public void setQuantity(int quantity)
    Sets the grocery item's quantity to be the given value.
    Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Pete,
    I having difficulty with the main class, and getting console to store a users input into a string array ... I will post the code that I have so far. Sorry I am trying real hard to learn ... and just having a frustrating time.
    This is what I have in the main file.
    import java.util.*;
    public class Chapter_8 {
         public static void main(String []args){
              Scanner console = new Scanner(System.in);
              System.out.println("Please enter the first item of your list");
              String[]GroceryList = console.next();
              System.out.println("Please enter the next item of your list");
              String[]GroceryList = console.next();
              System.out.println("How many would you like to buy?");
              int quantity = consolenextInt();
         }This is what I have in the GroceryItem Class file:
    public class GroceryList{
    public GroceryList(){
    Static String []GroceryList ={"beans", "macaroni", "milk", "cheese", "bread", "eggs","hamburger","Hotdogs","peas","cookies"};
    for(int i=0;i<5;i++){
    System.out.println(GroceryList);
    And the final file that I have is the GroceryItemOrder Class file:public GroceryItemOrder(String name, int quantity, double pricePerUnit){
    this.name = name;
    this.quantity = quantity;
    this.pricePerUnit = pricePerUnit;
    public double getCost(){

  • Dual display help for a recently converted mac user

    I have a 24" Intel IMac and I wanted to set up dual displays. I may have jumped the gun a little because I didn't do much homework but I found a big cheap monitor at Best Buy which is an HP w2338. I bought that and the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. I hooked everything up and both monitors work but I have a couple small issues that I can't seem to find how to fix. First, I have about a 1.5 inch strip along the left side of my hp monitor that isn't used at all. It is just a black strip that taunts me. When I drag things from my IMac to my HP it drags fine, but it just acts like the monitor is smaller than it is. The resolution on my IMac is set to 1680x1050 and on my HP it is 1920x1080. Second, I have very faint vertical stripes in my new HP monitor. They can be seen the best in the grey parts of my windows. Any help with either issue would be greatly appreciated.

    On your 24-inch iMac's screen, the native resolution is 1920x1200. You can use a lower resolution, but the display will seem a bit fuzzy (the pixels are being approximated). So you should use 1920x1200 on the iMac's screen, unless you have a good reason to use something else.
    On the HP display, it sounds like the native resolution is 1920x1080. That's the resolution of an HDTV, so it should work. However, when you connect an HDTV, it connects with a digital connection, HDMI. So I think it will work if you connect it HDMI. If that monitor happens to have DVI, use DVI.
    If it only has VGA and HDMI, there was a recent topic that was very similar (same display I think). Is your iMac the older model (not the brand new 2009 model) with a Mini-DVI port? If so, take a read there to see if the information is applicable to your situation.

    Now, if that display you have is different, and it has a DVI connector, please post back.

  • Help for a furstrated new Motion user...

    Hi,
    FCS2 arrived the other day, and im fine with FCP6 and the other stuff, but Motion 3 is really confusing me. I have never used motion before, so it is all new to me. I know FCP inside out, so hopefuly some of the knowledge I have from FCP will apply to motion.
    Any essential tips you could give me that might help the whole system click into place in my head?
    I desperatly want to get good at motion, as I am currently working on a video for Heathrow Terminal 5, and it would be great to be able to use some custom motion graphics for the video...
    Thanks for any help,
    Pete.

    Well what Is a title sequence of sorts, and some lower thirds and cut sequence graphics that are all around a central theme.
    Some 3D stuff would be good but to be honist anything would be good. I wanted to do a lower third with a cuban cigar, and I have a freind who is a product photographer who can take a proper photo of a cigar, its just animating it in a way that is interesting and not so simple that I look under-skilled!
    I dont suppose there is anyone in the UK, south east, near Maidenhead and High Wycombe that could give me lessons?!

  • Help for wireless rookie

    Ok, I have a Titanium 15 inch that I just picked up (550mhz) as my first laptop. I wanted to use it wirelessly, which I also have no experience with. After a bit of snooping found that I can use the Orinoco Silver card in the slot. Got one of those off eBay. After putting it in, the icon shows up on the top right, but I am getting no signal. Also, there seem to be to LED lights on the card, should either or both of them light up when inserted? They don't. I need a link or info on how to get this thing working so I am not tied to wires with it. Is there a good link, am I missing something, do I need drivers-this card came with no cd, but as I said, the card is being recognized on the top with the clock icon.
    I apologize for the lack of knowledge but really want to get this going and learn how to do it.
    Thanks so much as always.

    gmakc4,
    Go into System Preference and open up network. Are you seeing Ethernet Adaptor (en2) under Show: Network Status? This is the Orinoco Card. If not,then go to Show: Network Port Configuration. In the list of Port Configurations, you should see Ethernet Adaptor (en2). Make sure there is check mark in the on box. Once you click apply at the bottom, the lights on the card should come on. On mine, the light closest to you will be solid and the other light will blink as it looks for a network.
    If there is no signal, but the card is recognized, Network/Show: Network Status will show the adapter with a yellow dot. The message will read something like "Ethernet Adaptor (en2) is currently active. Ethernet Adaptor (en2) has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet".
    Not sure why, but the driver spells "adapter" as "adaptor".
    Once this is done, under "About this Mac", the card should show up not only under "PC Card", (looks something like this? )
    WaveLAN/IEEE:
    Function: Network Adapter
    Vendor: Lucent Technologies
    Type: PC Card
    Vendor ID: 342
    Device ID: 2
    but should also show up if you highlight "Network",
    something like:
    Ethernet Adaptor (en2) Ethernet Ethernet en2 IP address.
    Also in the System Preferences, the installer should have place a pane call "WirelessConfig". At some places, you may have to put the name of the network in, but if I remember right, it should just pick a network.
    There should also be something called "SigMeter" in the Applications folder. If you are running Tiger, double click that an it will put a signal meter by the card icon at the top. This is handy because it will show you the strength of any signal you may be receiving.
    I have a secure network at home and have not been able to get the driver to sign on, but I don't have any problems when I shut off the security and sign on to any open networks.
    Hope this helps,
    Shane

    I forgot to add, there is a manual of sorts for the driver if you download the older version of the driver (WirlessDriver Beta 5.1)

  • Need help for off topic question...please.

    First off, I want to appologize for posting this here...but it seems that the forum it belongs too it not accepting any new postings. At least I don't see a post button at the top. So anyone who is knowledgeable and patient with me would be most appreaciative.
    I use both Safari and Netscape. Im not sure which app. is doing this but it is quite annoying. It seems as I browse using both apps., when I finally do get to my desktop...I see a bookmark file. For example (bookmarks-23.html). If I just ignore it, they accumulate. As you can see, this is bookmark number 23. I am not sure what app. is doing this and why it is doing it. What could even happen to cause this.
    Any help would be appreaciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Eddy

    Hi Eddy
    I guess you mean the safari forum, right?
    The reason you're not seeing a post button, is cuz you're not actually viewing the forum itself, but a list of recent topics.
    Just above that list - look for the actual link to the Safari forum.
    now you mention it.... I guess it could seem like there's no post button, if you're not already familiar with the discussions site.
    continuing OT - Quit either one of your browsers & use the other; if you get a #24 & 25 bookmarks file, you'll know it's the browser you're using now that creates them.
    When you know that - I'd suggest a new question in the Safari forum

  • Help for transfering data from one user' all tables to another

    Hello guys,
    I have trim the extra sizes of columns in almost all tables of my database. Before doing this, I saved the data of tables by creating another user "User1" with the same objects and importing dmp file in it. After this I cleared my original objects and reduced the extra sizes of columns alomost in all tables.
    Now I want to transfer data from backup user "User1" into my original user's "User" tables.
    Can any one guid me with the way of doing so, so that I could do it just through 3 or 4 lines of code instead of individualy table wise transfering the data...??
    regards
    Kashif

    SQL> select 'insert into '||table_name||' as select * from user1.'||table_name ||' ;' from user_tables where table_name in ('EMP', 'DEPT') ;
    'INSERTINTO'||TABLE_NAME||'ASSELECT*FROMUSER1.'||TABLE_NAME||';'
    insert into DEPT as select * from user1.DEPT ;
    insert into EMP as select * from user1.EMP ;
    2 rows selected.
    SQL>You could spool the output of the query above to a .SQL script file and then just run it within the same script using @@script_name.SQL.

  • Maximum size for JAR files on Nokia 3120 Classic

    I am trying to download and install a java app for a Nokia 3120 classic, but when installing I get an error message telling me that the file is too big at 5.7mb.
    I can't find the maximum size of .jar files for this phone anywhere.
    Can anyone let me know what this is and whether there is any way to get the app to work.
    Many thanks.
    Alan Watson

    YES THERE IS A WAY!! I only got this information from someone else. Thanks for that person.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Download the jar file you want to install, to your computer. Now open My computer, and on the upper left corner you shall see a menu, click the "Tools" button and then click "Folder options..." A little window will appear. Click the "View" tab. On this window you need to find an option "Hide extentions for known file types" below "Advanced settings". Then unmark or uncheck the box.
    2. Now when you open my computer and go to the folder where you had downloaded the java file, the file name will read "(anyfilename).jar". HERE IS THE TRICK.
    3. Rename the last part of your file. Instead of .jar change it to .jpg so that it reads  "(anyfilename).jpg"
    4. Now copy the renamed file and paste it in your mobile's C: or Memory Card drive.
    5. Once you had pasted, rename the copied file back to what it was. i.e "(anyfilename).jar"
    BASICALLY the phone limits a file with a ".jar" extention, you can fool it by renaming the extention to ".jpg" and then once the file is copied into the phones C:drive you can change the extention back to ".jar" by renaming it.
    Share it. Hope it works for you! God bless...

  • Nokia 3120 classic display settings

    Hi!
    The "Nokia 3120 classic User Guide" (9207764, Issue 3) in chapter 6. Settings -> Display says:
    Sleep mode -- to save battery power, the display turns black when no function of the phone is used for a certain time
    If I understand correctly the purpose of that option, when it is set to on it should turn off the back light of the display when the phone is not used for some time (a few seconds). By default that option is enabled.
    I tried to disable that option (set it to off) but nothing changed -- the display light turns off very quickly, which is very annoying for example when reading/writing messages. To prevent the display light to turn off you need to press a key every few seconds.
    I also tried to disable the "power saver" option in the display settings but I didn't notice any difference either.
    IMHO, there is a bug in the phone firmware regarding those options. Moreover I thing that user should be able to change the time interval after which the display light is turned off in the sleep mode.
    Another issue with that phone behavior: Using an analog or digital clock as a screen saver (Settings -> Display -> Screen saver) is quite convenient because the default digital clock in top right corner of the display uses very small font. When the keyboard is locked, the screen saver activates after a few seconds of inactivity (that time interval should be adjustable too), but the display light turns off also, which is OK when the keyboard is locked. Now the question is how to turn on the display light (to see the clock in the screen saver) without turning off the screen saver at the same time? Currently you have to do the following:
    (1) press one of the navigation keys in order to turn on the display light
    (2) wait a few seconds in order to activate the screen saver
    The firmware version used is:
    V 07.16
    27-05-08
    RM-364
    Any comments?
    -- rpr.

    Can someone from Nokia please response to this thread? The lack of control over the display light duration is a huge disadvantage of the 3120. It sounds like a small issue, but it is really not. I would recommend anyone who is interested in the 3120 NOT to get it, for this exact reason.
