Help for an old iMac

Hi,
I was wondering. I have an old mac OS X 10.1.5, 192 MB, and can't afford to upgrade. I have iTunes 4.7 but I cannot buy songs in that version. Is there anyway I can download an iTunes version to get songs?
Thanks.

Well, go to software update ( Click Apple button - click Software Update...) and see what updates you have. I think you can update your iTunes up to 4.9. (Not sure of that...that OSX is unheard of anymore...) I know for sure that it can be updated to 4.7.1.
According to Apple, Itunes 4.7 was the first one with support for music downloads, but not video. So either way you should be able to so. I am sorry, but that OS is really old, and it wasn't popular in the first place. I hope I helped though! I completely understand your financial position (Look at my imac....), but you really do need to think about upgrading to at-least OSX 10.2, or 10.3....as i don't think it will handle Tiger. They are BIG improvements over 10.1.5. Hope I helped!

No. Wiping the HD will erase the OS on it.

  • Finding a New Use for an Old iMac G5

My first ever Mac was an iMac G5 (circa 2006) that gave up the ghost in the form of a logic/mother board that mysteriously died last summer.
I was told by the Apple Store Tech that the board needed to be replaced for a fee of $1100. So I had them pull the hard drive and bought a new iMac.
I would like to know if this old iMac G5 without a hard drive can be repurposed to be used as either a secondary display for my new iMac or as a replacement for the CRT display on my kid's PC?
    Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions!

    Woody,
Thanks for the suggestion.  Sorry I did not see it until today, not very many problems with my existing iMac Intel
Thanks again and I will go into my local authorized Apple repair centre and have them find out if it is the capacitor failure.  If yes, then my daughters get Mac!!

It requires a PATA (parallel ATA)/IDE drive.

  • I need to find a family-friendly content filter for an old imac, please help!

Hi, I really really need to find some kind of parental controls/adult content filter software that will block adult websites on an iMac 1.3.9. I have tried google but the only results that come up are not compatible with such an old computer. (of course, all of the newer computers have parental controls built into the system so they don't even need the software anyway, very frustrating) If you have any ideas or know of a specific software I can look for, please, please tell me, I would be so grateful. Thank you!

all of the newer computers have parental controls
So do the older ones.  Which OS are you using?  Read the Help Menu and/or search Knowledge Base on "how to set up parental controls."

  • Help Rehabing a old iMac with a bad HDD

I inherited an original, tray loading, iMac, built in 9/98. We used it here around the house for dial up web surfing till about 5 years ago when the HDD went bad. I don't remember the specific errors it gave, but as I recall from my research at the time it was clear it needed a new drive.
At this point, I'm trying to rehab the machine for an elderly relative. She's recently moved from a home where they provided computers for the residents to one where they do not. She'll be dialing up and using the machine for email and very light surfing.
I have an old 60gig Western Digital Enhanced IDE hard drive that I'm given to understand is compatible with the iMac. Is this true?
The problem is I've long since lost the software for the machine if I even had it to begin with.
What I need help with is identifying and obtaining a start up disk that will allow me to format and build the HDD far enough that I can take it online to download any other software I need through my network here at home.
Can I download and burn such a disc from PC? Will I have to buy an OS and software or is this sufficiently old that it can be had for free?
Dell Windows XP Q re: iMac Rev A. HDD

The Hard drive will work, but in the installation process, make sure you format the drive with one partition smaller than 8GB and put your system on that volume.
There is information here on swapping drives.
You should really buy an OS9 disk available here. They aren't free, and I recommend OS9 'cause 9 is about as ancient as you can go for net connection these days. You can check eBay for a grey machine-specific disk for your iMac, but beware. A lot of folks don't know what they are selling. Personally, ... I'd buy a universal OS9.2.1 disk.

  • Java help for an old MacBook

I need some help, please.  I have an old MacBook - Mac OS X version 10.5.8 - and I have zero money.  Health wise, I have large spaces of time when I need to be still, for meds to work.  My sis gave me a membership for Pogo and the games really helped a lot with the still times.  Now, I keep getting Java messages that I need to update my Java -  -  - and I'm afraid that my ol' Mac isn't up to the task anymore.  At least, I've tried to update many times - but I wind up having the same problem.  Do I need to uninstall something and reinstall? (how would I do that) Am I just SOL?  Or do you have an idea that would work.               I've asked this question on other forums and have gotten some guy who wants $80 to $100 to tell me how to fix it, but as I said, I have zero money.  If someone has an idea, please let me know.      Thank you so much.

I assume the MacBook is Intel? (-About This Mac from the menu bar)
Java should update through Apple Software update FOR FREE. (-Software Update from the menu bar). Oracle no longer offers a download that will run on Mac OS systems lower than 10.7.
The direct link to download the latest Flasj=h Player that will run on OS 10.5.8 is: Flash Player 10.3.183.90 (Mac only)
Unfortunately, that may not work with Pogo.
If you truly do have "zero" money you may be SOL.
If your Mac is Intel and you can possibly spare $20 (I'm not  asking for it), Apple sells OS 10.6 (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard) for $19.99 and they ship it for free.
Everything you have will "Migrate" to the new OS with the install, but you'll be able to run a lot of software that WON'T run on 10.5

  • Is it possible to get a system disk for my old iMac without the receipt?

I use an iMac at work and it's really slowing down. (10 minutes at least to open any application) I have 3 GB of ram and use only a quarter of my hard drive space. I've looked everywhere for the startup disk to no avail. I've used TechTool Deluxe and it says that the directory needs repair. When I used DiskUtitlity last, it says that the hard drive needs repair and to restart with the system disk and use Disk Repair. If anyone has any thoughts on this matter, I'm all ears.

No receipt is needed assuming they are still available for your vintage machine. All you need is a credit card and the machine's serial number. Then call AppleCare and if they are available they will ship a replacement set for a nominal cost.

  • Need help for my old but good Canon D30 (not 30D)

I have bought 2 cables, and still unable to have my Canon software communicate with camera. I want to put my name on it, or rather, be id'd as the owner. I have done this on my EOS 30D and my EOS 60D. Worked like a charm.
Now, what can I do to get this on my Canon D30 ? Am I using the wrong software ? I understand it's backward compatible but I need help. Please help if you can and I thank you.
    Best,
    casper_zip

    Here I am again:
I loaded EOS Utility on my older Dell with Windows XP. It loaded, and when I connected D30  it was looking for the disk that came with it. Unfortunately, that disk I did not have. Had I possessed it, could have completed my task of adding my name to my camera. The comuter recognized that a D30 was connected to it.
Wonder where in the world will I be able to come up with this needed disk ? My older computer works like new, and I really like XPS better than Windows 7 Professional. I will put out a search on the internet and also on ebay and Amizon.
Thanks so much for your wonderful help. Has me excited, now.

  • Help for an Old Fart saving PDF forms

I have created a form that can be filled out on line. I have played around with the execute menu items settings and am very happy with them with the exception of the default that comes up to email the pdf. It gives a user confusing choice of which email program to choose.
I began to get concerned about security so I purchased a Premium SSL and wonder if there is a way to:
    1) Encrypt the input from the form prior to saving and emailing it.(Similar to how a password only shows dots instead of the password) With the receiver having the encrypt code to open it?
    or
    2) Can I save this data to my secured server. Then just create an SFTP user to allow the entitled person to view it. Seems it should be easy but I cannot find the script.
    I'm up for inexpensive soloutions...:)

Go to HH Gregg if you have one in your area.  They are willing to work with you and give you much better pricing than Best Buy.  I recently had a horrible sales experience with Best Buy in trying to purchase a TV and will never buy another item from their store.  They have no integrity.  HH Gregg was increadible to work with!  They will match Best Buy's price and then some.  Good luck!
That was not my experience the one time I walked into an HH Gregg.  All of their products were significantly overpriced, and I found myself swarmed by salespeople that would not leave me alone the second I walked in the door.  HHG is one of those "high pressure" retailers where the employees are on commission and will put LOTS of pressure on you to buy, buy, buy.
I don't know if BBY's salespeople are on commission or not, but given the low pressure I get when I go into a store, I assume they are not.  NEVER trust salespeople in a store where the staff operate on commission.
To the OP:  37-40" may be too large for you.  My parents had similar issues - an entertainment center with severe width limitations, although I don't remember what our exact width limit was.  I know that it was pretty close to the size of a 27" tube TV.  I tried as hard as I could to get them to ditch it (There's a reason enclosed entertainment centers are unheard of these days), but they insisted on keeping it.  In their case, a 32" Sony was just a little too large to fit "flat" into the center, but in their case they had a rotating base that would slide out - the TV would fit if it were rotated a bit and then slid back in.  For watching, they slide it out.

  • Which SDRAM upgrade for my old imac?

I'd like to upgrade my imac sdram to as much as it can hold. Here are the specs:
    Imac version = 22.14
    Mem 348 MB
    Proc. 500 MHZ PowerPC G3
    I think it is 1983-2003
I have one stick at 256 SDRAM and one is the one that came with it. I've had one store tell me I need PC100 and others tell me pC133 and I'm all confused!
So my questions: what is the exact type I need and how far up can I go? Is it only two 256 sticks(cards).... thankx yvonne

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58007
    It can hold a maximum of 2 X PC100, 3.3V, 168-pin DIMM 512MB modules. Note it must be non-eec.
If your 500 Mhz model has a CD+RW drive (A 2001 model) then according to the Apple specs it will also take (low density) PC133 RAM. The RAM will slow down to PC100 speeds though.
I'm not sure if PC133 will work on the non-2001 iMac slot loaders as I've only tried PC133 RAM on the models Apple support it with (works fine).
If you want sure support just go PC100.

  • Possible exporting help for a old mac...

    Hi, me again.
Trying to find a way to burn my 1 hour 30 movie to disk. I've found out that Final Cut Express cannot burn to disk, and to top it off, my copy (that came with my PowerPC Mac) of IDVD won't work either as i don't have a superdrive. Great!
I need to burn this movie to disk to be able to watch on dvd players.
Would it work, if i export the movie as a quicktime movie, transfer it to my PC and burn it on a program such as Premier Elements? Or would the file be the wrong format to play on such devices?
    Many thanks.

The only thing that's playable on a DVD player is MPEG-2. FCE does not export MPEG-2. Usually the authoring application encodes the video to the correct format. That's what iDVD does. If you're going to take it to Premiere Elements on a PC to do the encoding and burning to DV you have to tell us what format you're working in.

  • New use for old imac

I'm considering an upgrade for my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz PPC) to a newer Core 2 Duo, and am wondering if there's some use for the old iMac besides door stop? Specifically, is there a way that I can use the old machine for backup? It has a newer hard drive. Thoughts appreciated.

You can use it as a monitor for your new mac using an app called ScreenRecycler, or take it apart, throw in a big HD and like the other poster said, use it as a type of home server, or you can sell it, or you can donate it to a company that will refurbish it and send it off to less-fortunate families, or you can make a big shrapnel bomb, or you can.... well you get the idea. I would suggest using it for the monitor though
