  • Optimizing images for Help and Print/PDF

i'm struggling with how to optimize graphics so they look good in both Help and print/pdf output.
I use Snag-it to Capture and save as PNG 300 dpi.
I often put the images in Vision and add callouts and save as PNG.
From RH I generate a printed output (Word) which I convert to PDF.
So with all the programs an image goes through (snag-it > visio > RH > Word > PDF) i'm not always sure what the best settings are.
    Does anyone have guidelines/suggestions  ?
    Thanks

I've had very good luck going from a SnagIt capture to Robohelp to Word to PDF. I add callouts directly in SnagIt to save myself a step and save the files as a 24-bit (True Color) PNG. The graphics are very legible in the WebHelp output, in the Word document, and in the printed PDF.
The only thing that doesn't work well, I've found, is when I reduce the size of a graphic in either SnagIt or Robohelp. Instead, to keep a graphic's dimensions manageable, I either shrink the s/w application window before I grab the screen, capture just a portion of the screen, or crop the screen shot in SnagIt.
What problems have you been encountering?

  • SUDDENLY, IT IS MPOSSIBLE TO PRINT PDF DOCS, EVEN AS"PRINT AS IMAGE"......

All of a sudden, it is impossible to print PDF documents. Tried to use the "PRINT AS IMAGE" option, tried to restart PC, then to reinstall ADOBE READER. Also tried to copy files and then print.......

No printer on the network I use is printing the PDF documents
chosen. 5 printers are NOT printing the PDF documents. The only way I
can print the documents is by opening them with ADOBE PHOTOSHOPO and
    then select "PRINT"..........

  • I can't print PDF docs since Reader XI update

Help!!!!!!!  I can't print PDF documents since updating to Reader XI.  Had no problems before this update.  I have read other users posting and tried one "fix" that was suggested suggesting user try to print docs as "image," but that choice was not active to select.  I can't print even older PDFs that are on file in my computer.  Please advise - this is interfering with my business.  Thanks.  I get an error message indicating "no pages selected to print" even though it defaulted to Print All.  I selected by one page, pages 1-5, etc. with no success.  Windows 7 system.

Pat, that did not fix the problem.  I still get the messages that the document cannot be printed and that no pages are selected; the print dialogue box shows that “all” pages are selected.  I get the message even if I manually select “pages 1-7” etc.  I tried deleting Adobe and reinstalling it but I get a 1311 message that seteup.exe cannot be located.  I tried downloading just the Adobe Reader printer drivers from your site and get a message saying that the download was not successful.  Please help.

  • Applescript for printing pdf to printer

Anyone that can help me with this:
I need to print a pdf file to a printer from filemaker (applescript i guess)
The filemaker records holds all information needed:
The filename and the path to the pdf file
    The number of copies needed
The printer to send it to (different because of duplex simplex)
Anyone who have a script i can implement ?

Assuming you can get the data out of Filemaker (I don't use Filemaker so my example might not be right), it's pretty easy to print PDF files. This should get you started:
    tell application "FileMaker Pro"
    tell current record
-- the syntax here might not be right!
set theJob to contents of cell "Job"
set thePrinter to contents of cell "printer"
    end tell
    end tell
    tell application "Printer Setup Utility"
    set current printer to thePrinter
    open alias theJob
    end tell
The first part of the script extracts the data from Filemaker (check this, please), then calls Printer Setup Utility to change the current printer to the printer named in thePrinter (which should be the printer name as defined in Printer Setup, and it opens the PDF file (assuming that 'theJob' is a full path to the file itself.
For the number of copies element it's probably easiest to just wrap the 'open' command in a repeat n times block. There is also a print command in Printer Setup which takes an optional with properties but couldn't get it to work in my quick test here.

  • Delays in Opening Acrobat X, and delays in printing pdf Docs

What do you need to do to speed up the opening of the program, and speed up the printing of pdf docs?

    Michael,
    Thanks for the return note.
The biggest issue (length of time) is just opening the Adobe program…last timed at 27 seconds.  The problem started when I purchased the X edition.  I have also recently upgraded to Windows 7.  Never had the problem before.  Not sure what you mean by problem with fonts…I’m rather “challenged”.

  • Why is my page set up drop down different from your illustration in help for printing background

    ''duplicate - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/830795''
The page set up drop down menu looks nothing like the illustration in help. It does not include a box to check for "print background. How do I print background

first, does it sound like I set it up correctly from what I wrote?
    Yes, all sounds correct.
Second, I heard that adding a b/g AX to the network will slow everything down to b/g speeds but I have also read that simply using B/G AX's to add speakers by joining the network will not slow down the N network....which is it?
The b/g AX devices will not slow down the network unless they are actively streaming AirTunes. Even then, audio streaming does not require a great deal of bandwidth, so for the most part, the effect would be negligible. Don't worry about it.
Is my network slowed down to b/g speeds because of my speaker set up or not?
The speed on your network will depend on a number of factors..are you downloading something while copying something else? Are you simply browsing? How far is the computer from the closest wireless access point?
You can check your current available bandwidth on your local network by doing the following:
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the Transmit Rate number.
    "g" wireless = 54 Mbps
    What do you see?
Oh, and by the way, I don't know if this matters, but while the time capsule serves as the main base station, it is in bridge mode because it is plugged into a 2wire gateway router.
If the Time Capsule is in bridge mode, it cannot act as the main base station. If you want, you could think of it that way if you are using the wireless on the Time Capsule as your preferred network, but the Time Capsule is not the "main" router.

  • Stapler - A python utility for manipulating PDF docs based on pypdf

    Link to github:
    http://github.com/hellerbarde/stapler/tree/master
    * Dependencies *
Stapler depends only on the packages python and python-pypdf, both of
which can be found in the archlinux repositories.
    * History *
Stapler is a pure python replacement for PDFtk, a tool for manipulating PDF
documents from the command line. PDFtk was written in Java, and natively
compiled with gcj. And it has been discontinued a few years ago and bitrot is
setting in (i.e. it does not compile anymore in archlinux).
Since I used it quite a lot, I decided to look for an alternative and found
pypdf, a PDF library written in pure Python. I couldn't find a tool which
actually uses the library, so I started writing my own.
At some point I plan on providing a GUI, but the command line version will
    always exist.
    * License *
A simplified BSD Style license describes the terms under which Stapler is
distributed. A copy of the BSD Style License used is found in the file "LICENSE"
    * Usage *
I am too lazy at the moment to learn how to create a proper man page so this has
    to suffice.
There are 4 modes in Stapler:
    - cat:
Works like the normal unix utility "cat", meaning it con_cat_enates files.
      The syntax is delightfully simple:
        Syntax
        stapler cat input1 [input2, input3, ...] output
        Example:
        stapler cat a.pdf b.pdf c.pdf output.pdf
        # this would append "b.pdf" and "c.pdf" to "a.pdf" and write the whole
        # thing to "output.pdf"
you can specify as many input files as you want, it always cats all but the
last file specified and writes the whole thing into the last file specified
    - split:
Splits the specified pdf files into their single pages and writes each page
into it's own pdf file with this naming scheme:
        ${origname}p${zeropaddedpagenr}.pdf
      Syntax:
        stapler split input1 [input2 input3 ...]
Example for a file foobar.pdf with 20 pages:
        $ stapler split foobar.pdf
        $ ls
          foobarp01.pdf foobarp02.pdf ... foobarp19.pdf foobarp20.pdf
Multiple files can be specified, they will be processed as if you called
      single instances of stapler.
    - select/delete (called with sel and del respectively)
These are the most sophisticated modes. With select you can cherrypick pages
out of pdfs and concatenate them into a new pdf file.
      Syntax:
        stapler sel input1 page_or_range [page_or_range ...] [input2 p_o_r ...]
      Example:
        stapler sel a.pdf 1 4-8 20-40 b.pdf 1-5 output.pdf
        # this generates a pdf called output.pdf with the following pages:
        # 1, 4-8, 20-40 from a.pdf, 1-5 from b.pdf in this order
What you _cannot_ do yet is not to specifying any ranges. I will probably merge
select and cat at some point in the future so that you can specify pages and
ranges, and if you don't, it just uses the whole file.
The delete command works almost exactly the same as select, but inverse.
It cherrypicks the pages and ranges which you _didn't_ specify out of the
      pdfs.
contact me if you have questions about usage or anything, really

Are you planning on adding eventually the full functionality of pdftk -- rotate, watermark, encrypt, etc?  I occasionally use pdftk, and I'd like to see a replacement since it's apparently having troubles keeping up to date. Great work!
    Scott
if you help me with ideas for the command syntax, sure why not. pypdf supports these things. can you make a complete list of things pdftk does that would be important to port over? and how the command line syntax for these features work. I'll then get working
EDIT: I just had a look at the pdftk man page (didn't think of that when i wrote the above...) there are some things that will not be possible with the current version of pypdf (and frankly i doubt there is going to be a new release):
update_info (because there is no way to write document properties with pypdf, you can read them just fine though)
fill_form  (similar reason. it's just not supported)
the rest will be fine. I'll rename split to burst and then I'll mimic the cat function. the others should be no problem either.
although... i didn't find anything on rotate in the pdftk manual. how should i implement a rotate function? Rotate complete documents or single pages?
    cheers
    Phil

He says, a neutral grey is Set, When all 4 Values of c,m,y and k are the Same?
    Seriously?
Embarassing Mistake in this Video. Has anybody from Adobe watched and cleared this? How in the World Couleur this Guy become adobe Certified whatever.
For neutral grey you'd use the k value only.
In RGB a neutral grey is Set with Same amount of r,g and be.
Depending on your profiles and on the colours, a neutral gray in CMYK Would have more Cyan than Magenta and yellow.
Just Take a neutral grey in RGB and let Photoshop change it to CMYK. And have a Look at the Result.

  • Best Practice for storing PDF docs

My client has a number of PDF documents for handouts that go
with his consulting business. He wants logged in users to be able
to download the PDF docs for handouts at training. The question is,
what is the 'Best Practice' for storing/accessing these PDF files?
I'm using CF/MySQL to put everything else together and my
thought was to store the PDF files in the db. Except! there seems
to be a great deal of talk about BLOBs and storing files this way
    being inefficient.
How do I make it so my client can use the admin tool to
upload the information about the files and the files themselves,
not store them in the db but still be able to find them when the
    user want's to download them?

Storing documents outside the web root and using
<cfcontent> to push their contents to the users is the most
    secure method.
Putting the documents in a subdirectory of the web root and
securing that directory with an Application.cfm will only protect
.cfm and .cfc files (as that's the only time that CF is involved in
the request). That is, unless you configure CF to handle every
    request.
The virtual directory is no safer than putting the documents
in a subdirectory. The links to your documents are still going to
    look like:
    http://www.mysite.com/virtualdirectory/myfile.pdf
Users won't need to log in to access these documents.
<cfcontent> or configuring CF to handle every request
is the only way to ensure users have to log in before accessing
non-CF files. Unless you want to use web-server
    authentication.

  • Cannot print pdf doc

After upgrading to 11.0.10 I cannot print PDF. I've got 2 boxes: The document cannot be printed and There were no Pages selected.

I think we need to know what Sibleyfam is using as a PDF reader. I have had difficulties printing PDFs using Adobe Reader to various HP LaserJets but if I open the files using Preview they print without any problem at all. Right-click or Control-click on the PDF icon and select the Open With option... then slide across to the available applications and select Preview... if, of course, the document was opening in Adobe Reader previously. If it won't print from Preview it could be a postscript error generated by a bad font in the PDF. Opening the file in Photoshop or similar so you are, effectively, rasterizing the font data may solve the problem if a dodgy font is the issue. Converting the file to Postscript should also produce the same fix though I just 'printed' a PDF as a .ps file and the text was still selectable making me think that the font problem (if it is this) will not disappear after the conversion.
I hope this helps eliminate something even if it doesn't solve your problem.

  • Can't print PDF docs when never an issue before...

Before I updated the Ver. 10  I had installed on my computer, I never had any problems printing PDF documents.  Now, I hit the "Print" button and get nothing.  No printed document, no "Error" pop-up, NOTHING!  I have an HP LaserJet 4050 connected to USB.  All are good.  I have troubleshooted using Adobe's website, and uninstalled and re-installed Reader Ver. 11 on my computer.  I was able to hit the "Print" button on the User Agreement and it printed fine.  I can print Word documents with no problem, and even internet sites.  Bring up any other PDF document that I used to be able to successfully print, and I STILL get nothing.  Any suggestions??

Pat, that did not fix the problem.  I still get the messages that the document cannot be printed and that no pages are selected; the print dialogue box shows that “all” pages are selected.  I get the message even if I manually select “pages 1-7” etc.  I tried deleting Adobe and reinstalling it but I get a 1311 message that seteup.exe cannot be located.  I tried downloading just the Adobe Reader printer drivers from your site and get a message saying that the download was not successful.  Please help.
