Help: G5 Crashes, Locks Up, Freezes, 3/4 Times A Day!

I have Powermac G5 1.6 ppc, and it crashes 3 to 4 or 5 times a day. When it crashes, if ther is any music playing in itunes, it will skip, and then you can't move the mouse, or even hit force quit.
I have to turn it on and off with power button.
I have done new install, disk repair, virus scans, and even checked crash log. When the computer restarts it acts as if there was never a crash.
I also isolated all programs to see if it was a program, and it would still lock up.
I am getting really ticked about this, because this is my 2nd apple computer. Not sure why I keep giving them all my hard earned cash.

virus scans
What are you using? Anti-virus software is usually a big cause.
Apple changes something and it breaks the AV, or the AV software itself gets exploited. Norton and McAfee both have been avenues for root level exploits in Mac's.
My advise is to do this:
1: backup and c boot from the Tiger install disk (check the disk if it's smudged, see if you can get it exchanged)
2: Select Disk utility, Erase w/Zero and come back later.
(zeroing rewrites the bad sector map and other things, making better writes, usually only needed once per drive unless you have a security issue or potentially damaged the drive during handling)
3: Install Tiger and combo update to 10.4.7 w/security update
4: Don't install AV or any other software, just see if the KP's (kernel panicks) continue.
5: If everything is fine then move on with iLife '06
6: If everything is fine then move on with apps that don't require a admin password to install. Go on like that until the cause shows itself again.
7: Clone your boot drive through out this process, this way you can easily "rewind" to a state before the change occured.
If you still have problems with just a basic OS install, then you need to start looking at a hardware, firmware issue.
Here's how to clone your boot drive.

You can search Macupdate.com for "Rember". It's a GUI front for "Memtest" which you can easily test your RAM for defects.

    hi jeanclaude,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
Your problem might be similar to the first question on this thread.
Can you try to disable this service called "ymc" or Yoga Mode Control by doing the following:
    1. Open control panel and type "Local services" in search box
    2. Click on Local services, scroll down to ymc, right click > properties > stop > startup type - disabled.
    3. Restart laptop and the keyboard and mouse disabling problem should be fixed.
    Credits goes to Hasan10.
    Let me know your findings
    Cheers

  • Firefox crashes or just freezes and each time I close it, I have to type all the websites again - it does not memorize them as the previous version did?

The latest version of Firefox looks great, but some new problems began appearing:
-sometimes it crashes or just freezes and nothing can be done, it just says Not Responding
-each time I close all the tabs I always put - Save option so that next time all the tabs are there, but with the new version I never get all the tabs from the previous session, but only the blank or home page?

Restart your computer and try again.
    Double check your AppleMenu()>System Preferences>Trackpad
    for all custom settings here.

  • Lion keep crashing my computer 3 or 4 times a day

Since i download the lion system to my computer it keeps freezing all the time.

Have the same problem. Whenever I leave my computer for some time (say to have lunch) and come back to it, I initially find that the browser I happen to have been using (Chrome of Firefox) does not respond. I find I can access other programs that happen to be open but then they become unresponsive. Eventually the whole computer becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit my MacBook Pro (latest version with 8mb memory).

  • Firefox crashes facebook, tumblr and youtube several times a day having to reset firefox atleast once a day

I will be surfing on the websites stated in the question and all of a sudden, the page will go all wonky and even if i refresh, close the window and reopen or even restart the computer it will still be unable to be used and it's like a plugin is missing and nothing can be clicked and its rendered unusable. It happens multiple times a day and the only fix is to reset firefox which gets really annoying after a while.

  • Machine just crashes locks up freezes

I'm stuck my PC crashes sometimes just dragging an item, playing a game opening a new window, it just locks up. Ctrl alt del doesnt make a difference, neither does turning fron switch off, just sits there and does nothing. Only way to do anything is reset switch, then lose any data for anything I have been working on - settings anything. Reinstalled XP - same happens - thought it may be graphics card - bought a new one - same happens. Updated drivers for everything I could think of - same happens.

Crash in game could be to tiny PSU (suck dry +12v amperage) .
Se you have a 7800 card , this draws quite alot of power in 3D mode vs 2D(windows mode) .
I suspect as like the 6800Ultra this 7800GS AGP card takes "all" of it's power from the +12 connector and only a few watts from
     +3.3 & +5v in the AGP slot .
It's reported top top out on 80-85watts in full 3D load mode . That equals apx. 7A of the +12v amps availible
as continious output from your PSU's 12v line .
Another thing that can cause it crashing is the nvidia drivers or your system memory .
Try loading some drivers from the 80.xx series .
And try testing your memory with memtest86+ ran from a floppy or bootable cd .
Both can be downloaded from www.memtest.org
Note ! That the MS-7025 bios autosets your memory voltage to 2.50v or 2.60v (depending on bios version)
If the vendor of your memory modules states nominal voltage to e.g  2.6v - 2.8v - chanhe the vdimm auto setting
to manual and select a higher voltage (ignore the MSI bios color warniings).
Tell us about the parts in your system and PSU model , and perhaps we can make a quick calculation .
You also have one here made by supershanks in excel format you can use yourself (7800GS isn't there but you get
calculate by using 6800Ultra AGP to make sure your PSU's lines are sufficiant).
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80186.0
    Edit:
Dual rail +12v mid range is hard to balance and often they fail with heavily loaded systems with high end gfx cards. Unless you go for PSU's
like FSP epsilon 700W and those in that category.
    Edit again:
    Theese :::
    CD-ROM/DVD : LITE-ON CD-RW SOHR-5238S (CD 52X Rd, 52X Wr)
    CD-ROM/DVD : PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-106D (CD 32X Rd, 16X Wr) (DVD 4X Rd, 2X Wr)
    CD-ROM/DVD : JO4142B ICL117F SCSI CdRom Device (CD 32X Rd) (DVD 4X Rd)
They steal more +12v current than you need to allow.
Why not keep only the DVD-RW connected.
    Edit once more  :
You apprearently have 2GB of ram .
What do you have . 4 x 512MB , 2 X 1GB modules , what brand and version . Are they unmatched or Dual Channel matched.

  • Mac Mini Experiencing Hard Freeze 3-4 Times Per day...

About 10 days ago, my mid-2011 Mac Mini started experiencing a hard freeze wherein I would get the spinning beachball and slowly each open app would be come unresponsive and my only resort was to hold down the power button to restart.  Upon reboot, the system would work fine for about an hour then the freeze would start again.  I've rolled back my configuration to a state prior to the freezing, and in desperation, have done a completely clean re-install of the OS.
    System specs:
    Mid-2011 Mac Mini 2.7 GHz Core i7
    16 GB RAM
    256GB SSD
    750GB HDD
Attached to a 27" LED Cinema Display, and an Airport Extreme Basestation/TimeCapsule (TimeMachine temporarily disabled)
I've been reading the logs, but don't really know how to interpret them so I've included a a number of postings right up until I force the reboot.
    Thanks in advance!

Then I rebooted.  Curious about the screenshot entry.  I'm stumped.

  • X completely freezes a few times per day

I just don't know where to start on this... My system freezes up and not even caps lock works. I have enabled sysrq, and I can Alt-SysRq-E back to the console.
Here is a CPU backtrace, task trace, and memory dump I got from sysrq just after it froze up: https://gist.github.com/andreasjansson/ … ce9801386b
Is there anything I can do to better debug this?
    Many thanks,
    Andreas

I think I figured it out. I managed to get a stack trace of X after if froze up, and found a call in libGL towards the end of the trace. I uninstalled nvidia libGL and installed the mesa version instead. Since then X hasn't crashed.

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2009) keeps crashing and rebooting itself a few times a day.  Below is the error report.  Any suggestions on why this keeps happening?

Those models took 1066 MHz memory - but you have 1333Mhz...
I'd test with the original or other correct spec. memory - and/or test with Apple Hardware Test or other memory testing software - like Rember.

Hallo, I am so frustrated, please help. I have curve 8520. It freezes so many times a day. If it does not freeze totally the trackpad (mouse) jumps to icons I don't want to be. I have used Firefox since it first came out, and always loved it. Firefox 4.0.1 is a different story. This must be one of the worst software upgrades across the board, of any software package I have ever used. I have stuck with it for a few weeks, and I have now finally given up.
Constant crashes, constant freezes, many plugins no longer work, my favorite among them, i.e PDF plugin to see PDF files inside the browser. AppTabs disappear over and over.
I have downgraded back to 3.6.17 and hope things will be better again.

  • Since updating to Mavericks my mac book pro locks up about 3 to 4 times a day, only way to recover is a hard reboot

Since updating to mavericks my mac boook pro locks up 3 to 4 times a day, the only way to recover is to hard reboot the system.  This started 2 days ago - about 15 days after upgrading.  All teh apps are visible just can't do anything with them.

Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Why does my iPad air keep freezing, it's only 2 days old

I have an iPad air that I was bought for Christmas. It keep freezing a few times a day, can anyone tell me if they have experienced this, what I am doing wrong or how I can fix this.

It's not turning on at all, it turned off and won't respond to any buttons. I've tried to charge and all it does it turn on to the apple screen than turn back off, and does this the whole time while on the charger. I tried recoverying it through itunes also, and that didn't work either.

  • Keeps freezing, crashing, locking up.

My phone keeps freezing in the middle of apps and it won't let me do any, iv'e tried leaving it alone for awhile, but the only thing that fixes it is taking the battery out. It also freezes on the lock screen, it seems to be trying to work but it's just going extremely slow and the only thing to fix that problem is to take the battery out.
For these things i have tried backing out, if it lets me get the screen that shows everything running i close all but some still run and the phone is still extremely slow pretty much locked up and sometimes completely locked up. This phone is brand new. I got it a week ago. There is no new apps on it. I am hardly using any of the memory at all. These problems have been happening since the day i brought the phone home and occur at least 0-20 times a day.

Hi wmweber. Your phone freezing is definitely not how we want your ne Galasy S3 behaving for you. If it started from day 1, I'm wondering what might have been some of the first things installed on your phone. If there's a particular application you access when it freezes in the middle, try removing it. If you downloaded any battery saver or task killer applications, remove them too. Those can actually bog down your phone more than they help. If you go to Settings>Application Manager, you can go to the Running tab to stop each running application. The Download tab will allow you to select an app and uninstall it too.
I'm here to help if you still need assistance.
    Thank you
