Help getting a formula correct

Help please, essentially I want to know how to use the formula editor to calculate a number like 6^0.5
Specifically, I want to insert a number (let's say it's in cell B5) and have it raised to power 0.5. Obviously using Insert\Formula\More functions\POWER but I cannot get the syntax right. Even better, let's say I am getting the 0.5 as a variable in cell B6.
The manual and Help menu could do with giving one or two specific examples like this beyond the simple ones they cover.

For years spreadsheets are using the ^char as the power operator.
So you may also use the shorter formulas:
=B6^0.5
=B6^B7

Oaky, at least we got that far. Next step is to determine if all those "numbers" are really numbers. Changing the format to "number" doesn't necessarily change the string to a number. The string has to be in the form of a number. Some may appear to you and me as numbers but will not turn into "numbers" when you change the formatting from Text to Number. Unless you've manually formatted the cells to be right justified, one way to tell if it is text or a number is the justification. Text will be justified to the left, numbers will be justified to the right.
Here are some that will remain as strings:
+123
123 with a space after it.

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

How to get a formula from the user from a text box in a webpage

Hi. I would like to know how to get the formula from the user who enters in a textbox. This formula can have any number of variables starting with a and goes on.
The complexity of the formula can go upto sin, cos, ln, exp. Also user enters the minimum and maximum values of these variables. Based on a specific algorithm (which I use) I would calculate a *set of values, say 10, for each of these variables, substitute in the formula and based on the result of this formula, I select ONE suitable value for each of the variables.
I don't know how to get this formula (which most likely to be different each time) and substitute the values *which I found earlier.

The textbox is the easy part. It's no different than getting a String parameter out of an HTTP request.
The hard part is parsing the String into a "formula" for evaluation. You'll have to write a parser or find one.
Google for "Java math expression parser" and see what you get.
Or write your own with JavaCC.

Please help - french accents not correctly displaying/storing in database

I have 2 databases running in 2 different character sets.
I am able to insert the following french accents in both databases and stored correctly also in db and displayed correctly in sql plus -
à À Ä ä Â â é É È è Ë ë Ê ê î Î ï Ï ç Ç Û û ô æ ö « »
But the following 2 charactes donot get displayed/stored correctly in any of the databases -
1. For db running in UTF8 character set it stores/displays as follows -
2. For db running in WE8ISO8859P1 character set it displays as 2 filled black squares. But when I do 'copy and paste'. It is pasteing correctly in the editor as follows -
I have another one database running in same WE8ISO8859P1 character set , DBA out there sent me the results from sql plus for the above 2 characters and they are getting displayed as well as stored fine.
I have the following questions -
1. Besides database characterset what else parameters or environment variables I need to check the for these characters to be displayed/stored correctly ?
2. Why would Databases with same characterset gives different results for the same characters ?
3. UTF8 is superset of WE8ISO8859P1 characterset, then why in that UTF8 db is unable to store that characters
which were able to be stored in WE8ISO8859P1 db.
By these various results, I am very confused and not able to troubleshoot further.
Any help would be very much appreciated...

Ah... an interesting NLS problem ;)
Main problem or misunderstanding could be that the characters small and capital ligature OE ( ) is not part of the ISO 8859-1 repertoaire. That is, you need another characterset to store and use those characters properly.
However, and sometimes unfortunate, if both db and session is using the same characterset setting, the binary value is "passed through" without conversion and stored - even if actual char is not valid!
1. DB charset should be able to store all possible chars your apps/users need. That's a first. Is that the case?
For sessions, the OS/app charset used should be indicated to Oracle with NLS_LANG parameter (registry or env var).
2. Are you sure that (valid) character codes are stored correctly. Note that storing values directly could work technically but be wrong semantically. Values > 127 are not valid in UTF-8 (needing further explanation)!
3. How are "characters" stored? What does this tell you?

Need help getting a voltage and current reading with myDAQ

I have set up a VI using the DAQ assistant with the myDAQ, I am using the ai0 port for a voltage reading and using the DMM for my current reading, the circuit is working as I am measuring the voltage on a resistor after the ammeter but I am unable to get a current reading in order for it to work. If I have something wired wrong please let me know, thank you. My circuit is a 12VAC power supply, going through a potentiometer to drop the voltage to 8VAC, which passes through a resistor, ammeter is in series after this and attached to another resistor to complete my loop, the AI0 for my volt meter is connected across the second resistor, I have the proper voltage reading when I run the VI, but am unable to get a current reading to display. I mean I can't get a proper current reading as a numeric value, I have my power supply going to a potentiometer to change my voltage level and then have 2 resistors, I am measuring the current between the 2 resistors. By doing so I am getting a value but not the same value I am getting on my multimeter, I am also having trouble with the calculation using the formula R=V/I in my formula node. If I use input controls I can get the formula to work properly, as soon as I connect it to the outputs of what I am trying to read, the formula node doesn't work.

I am very new to using numbers or excel so I am sorry if this is beginners work, but I can not seem to figure out how to get a formula to calculate two currency cells and give the answer as a percentage or number(minus dollar sign) The formula takes two partners monthly draws and breaks them down as a percentage of the draw as a whole. If the monthly partner draw total was $10,000, the cell breaks down their split as xx/yy. Here is an example of the two cells.
B9= $8,000.00
B10=$2,000.00
Here is the formula. =B9/(B10+B9)&"/"&B10/(B10+B9)

Need help getting an addendum attached to my course

Hi,
I am somewhat new to Captivate. I have a problem and am not sure which way to go or even if it can be done.
I have created a course for medical personnel. A number of different types of personnel take the same course - RNs, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and so on.
I have been asked to add an addendum that only one discipline (Occupational Therapist) will take. It is a few slides of information and 3 extra questions.
What I am trying to do is when the User enters their medical discipline I use that data to direct them to the addendum if appropriate.
My problem is I cannot figure out if I should use Branch Aware questions (which I cannot seem to get to work correctly no matter how I do it), make a Multi-SCORM package with the addendum as a second module that only some people will take or use the Aggregator (which I have pretty much ruled out because I think that I cannot have it report to my LMS.
I am using WIN 7, Captivate 7 and my LMS is Cornerstone. We use only SCORM 1.2 as well.
I have tried Branch Aware Quizzes several ways but I get NaN results.
I am currently trying to get it to work in Multi-SCORM with the user taking the first test, passing it, then if the user needs to do the addendum, jumping to the second SCO. But I cannot get the link between the SCOs to work as it is a local link when I set it up (Open Other Project opens C:\User… project2.swf)
I hope this is not too confusing. I am kinda drowning here.

I do have an advanced action that the user identifies there discipline (or profession.) I am using a drop down window that captures it as a variable. This I am actually fine with. It is the test that I am having problems with.
The course normally has 17 questions. The addendum ads 3 more questions. I am not sure how to add the 3 questions for the addendum students.
It goes something like this:
Slides 1-40, then Quiz Test 1-17, then I ask if they need to take the addendum > if yes, 3 more slides and 3 more quiz questions, then go to course wrap up; If no >go to course wrap up.
So basically I have two tests, one test with 17 questions and one with 17+3=20 questions.
If I have them jump to the results slide it does not work. So I am not sure how to get it to work.
I hope I am making myself clear.

Help creating a formula

I could use help creating a formula.
I have a excel file that I want to move to numbers. In it, I track the date last put in a column.
Each Column is for a date, and each row for an item. When I put a date in a the column, I am trying to create a forula that woudl return the date last input.
That is probably all confusing....but here is the excel formula that works, that does not work in numbers.
=IF(B80>0, INDEX(G80:FH80,MATCH(9.99999999999999E+307,G80:FH80)), "Not Played")
Or a second one I have also used
=INDEX(C5:JZ5,MATCH(9.99999999999999E+307,C5:JZ5))
Honestly - I don't understand the forumla, I got it from someone - I just know it works in Excell, but not in numbers.
Below is a picture of what it comes out like in Excell. The column that is not working is the "Last played"
Does that make sense? Any Numbers experts out there that can help me create a forumla in Numbers for this?

If I'm reading your table correctly, it appears that all dates a particular song has been played are listed in the same row as the song title.
If that's the case, your formula in G3 would be:
=MAX(H3:XX3)
With the letter identification of the last column in the table replacing XX.
The formula would then be filled down from G3 to the last row containing a song title.
Two other suggestions:
Numbers does not really perform well with large tables. The underlying model for a Numbers spreadsheet is a number of small, single purpose tables using no extra rows or columns.
As a first order revision to this table, I would suggest splitting the table after column G, then adding a single header column before what was column H. The seven column table consisting of columns A to G would then becone a summary table. The only entered data in this table would be the labels "Worship song (Wed)" through to "Last Played" in row 1. Row 2 would be empty to match the position of the song titles on this table with the positions on the larger table, and both row 1 and row 2 would be set as Header Rows to permit their being frozen in place, allowing other roll to scroll behind these two.
Everything else on that table, including the song titles, would be formula generated from data on the larger table.
The larger table would become a data collection table, containing only one or two formulas—the formula in row 2 that counts the number of songs used on each day, and possibly one to generate the weekly dates in row 1. All other data on that table would be directly entered by typing from the keyboard, pasting after copying from an outside source, or by inserting usng a script or menu item.
The main advantage here is that this arrangement would lessen th liklihood of accidently altering formulas during data entry by moving all data entry to a separate table, and by making it possible to lock the summary table, where no data entry takes place.
A second suggestion would be to limit the number of columns in the Data table to one for the song titles plus enough to collect the data for a period of either one or two years.
The main question to determine whether this would be a useful step is 'Do you have a use for the actual dates on which a song was played over two years ago, or is the number of times it was played in each year sufficient at that temporal distance?'
Making this change would involve some additional annual maintenance, with a couple of hitches that I haven't yet looked at, so unless the ie=dea interests you, I'll let the second 'sleeping dog' lie.

I need help creating a formula which returns the current date last year. I also need it to work during leap years.

The easiest way would probably be to use
=RelativeDate(CurrentDate();-365)
So subtractiing 365 to get the same date last year,
but you would need some extra logic for the years with a feb 29 in those 365 days.
=If FormatDate(RelativeDate(CurrentDate();-365);"dd") = FormatDate(CurrentDate();"dd")
Then RelativeDate(CurrentDate();-365)
Else RelativeDate(CurrentDate();-366)
Another question to ask is if you really want the same date last year, or if you also want a really 'same day' so monday compared to monday etc. in this case you would just subtract 364 days and get the day 52 weeks back...
