Help! Gray Screen on computer after restoring my ipod?

I made the mistake of hooking up my ipod to friends computer & it has been all downhill from there. I have restrored my ipod and have reloaded my original library but I only have a gray screen on my computer when I plug my ipod in. What have I done? Will I be able to have a normal Ipod again?
  Windows XP

Have you tried:
- Resetting yur iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Resetting network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.

  • Gray Screen of Doom after restoring from TM backup . . .

    OK here's what happened:
I tried installing Vista (32bit and home edition) via boot camp but it asked me to repartition my Mac HD *because some files could not be moved* to a single osx journal.
So I used TM to backup my system before popping in the Snow Leopard installation DVD and formatting + reinstalling OSX. After I got my re-installed system up and going, I popped in the Vista CD again and successfuly installed Windows.
Then, I jumped back on my mac to restore it from a backup (around 250 GB backup); so I rebooted from the OSX DVD again, and selected restore from backup via TM. All was going well, and I left it on overnight while it restored (About 6 hours) . . .
When I checked this morning, my iMac had fallen asleep, so I nudged it awake and found that the restore had been successful and that I needed to restart. Hence, I did.
Upon system restart, the apple logo of course popped out and things were looking well, when suddenly that grey box containing international messages of having to hold down the power button popped out. I did, and the same thing happened when I rebooted. Again and again and again.
So I booted it from Windows now, and making this post.
    Things I've tried:
-Booted from OSX DVD, used repair disk/disk permissions in disk utility on my Mac HD (it said it was OK)
Things I've got in my mind to try:
-Re-restore from the Backup via the OSX DVD again, this time sticking around to restart it upon finish without too much delay (even though I"m not sure if that has anything to do with it)
-Re-install OSX via DVD, and then try restoring.
I will update this when I try these; but in the meantime, I was hoping someone had an easier solution that doesn't require too much time consumption.

    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test, from the separate disc that came with your Mac.

No app on the iOS device is required.
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod/iPhone/iPad on the iOS device in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected or cellular data is on and connected for, on a computer browser go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up or continue to show off-line.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iOS device and have the device play a sound via iCloud.
    iCloud: Erase your device
    iCloud: Use Lost Mode
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the device and report to police and carrier if iPhone or cellular iPad
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the erase (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 or later on the device. With iOS 7 or later, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

After restoring my ipod, nothing shows up when I sync it back up - why?

Have you double checked to make sure content is still configured to sync to your iPod via its Music, Podcasts,Photos, etc., configuration tabs in iTunes?
To access these tabs, plug your iPod in and select it from under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes. Over to the right should be multiple tabs for the different kinds of content you can sync to the Nano. See this article for more information and assistance.
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Make sure that you also don't have the Manually manage music option enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab if you want your iPod to sync with iTunes instead manually adding and removing content from the device.

  • Gray screen of death after installing 10.4.11 upgrade

I installed the recommended update 10.4.11 on my PowerMac G3 and restarted. I can't get past the gray Apple screen and spinning circle. Same thing happened yesterday with my iBook G4, but I was able to get started after resetting the PRAM and restarting in Safe Mode about 20 times. I was finally able to re-install the update. But today I can't even start the G3 in Safe mode.
    Any suggestions?

I experienced something similar. Installation failed and when trying to reboot my computer got stuck on the gray screen.

  • IPod Classic Screen still black after restoring it

After dropping my iPod classic, the screen went black and I could no longer get it to work.  I was able to restore it however the screen is still black. I can hear it clicking when I spin the will and it connects to iTunes but the screen is still black. Is there any way to fix this?

    Try:

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Gray screen with lines after waking from sleep or opening lid after closed

I have a 2.4 gHz Aluminum Macbook (Late 2008) with backlit keyboard running Lion. Every time I wake it up after the screen goes black or when I open the lid after I've been gone for a while, a gray screen with thin vertical colored lines appears (the lines are in different positions every time). I can hear sound when I press the volume buttons and I can eject CDs. Usually it fixes when I close it and re-open it. When I'm working with multiple monitors, it is nearly impossible to get out of- I have to unplug the Mini Display Adapter and THEN re-open it.
All I have seen on the internet is to update your OS but mine is completely updated. Maybe the screen is going out? I've reset the PRAM and SMC with no luck.
Any help would be appreciated, Kolton

My March 2011 MBP did the same thing.
After spending about an hour online with Apple Care without success, I did a reinstall of the Lion OS. It fixed the problem.  I was concerned that I would lose data or settings, but the reinstall was seemless and everything was the way it was before the reinstall except that the "black screen on wake" problem was fixed.
I started the reinstall before I went to bed and it was waiting for me the next morning.
Here is a link to the page on how to do the reinstall:

    Hope this helps.

  • Gray Screen of death after kernel panic

    Hi guys,
Today I got a kernel panic and after restarting my macbook pro (early 2011) it stucks at a gray screen (without the Apple logo).
I tried a SMC-reset and also a NVRAM-reset but this doesn't help. Furthermore I tried to do a hardware test and booting from my Snow Lepoard DVD but this doesn't work too. When I start while holding c key the gray screen appears but nothing happens.
I removed the harddisc and connected to my server for getting all my files. This worked so the harddisc seems to be ok. In Addition to that I replaced my 8 Gb RAM to the original 4 Gb but this doesn't heller einher.
Has anyone suggestions what I can do?
    Regards robert

If you can get it to start, go into System Prefs and check your startup volume...

  • Please HELP very important video lost after restoring from backup

I used my iphone 4 to record me preposing to my fiance and then today I stupidly sync to computer and restore from my 3GS backup before backing up the video files. Is there anyway to get the video back? Please help this is the most important thing in our life. Anything, Anyone please help. I am very devastated right now!

Too be honest. If you recorded the video on the iPhone 4, and then synced the iPhone 4 to iTunes to the computer it is usually connected to, then the video should be backed up.
I'm not sure though, how you managed to have your iPhone 4 up and running, but then restore from a backup from your 3GS?? If you have synced your iPhone 4 to iTunes before, then the backup will have been from the iPhone 4. You get the option the first time you connect the iPhone 4 to iTunes, to either setup as a new device or restore from a backup (that's if you have had a iPhone previously). You can restore the iPhone (which would set it up has a new device, which would remove everything off of it). If you have done this, has far as I know the old information off of the iPhone, would be still there until you synced the iPhone to iTunes again.
In Windows, the library file for iTunes is in username (whatever you are called) music/iTunes, the library file is called iTunes Library.itl, also in this location is the iTunes/iTunes Media folder, in there should be any video/s that have been synced from your iPhone.
Other information off of the iPhone are in the following location:
(You will need to first make sure you have Windows set to show hidden files & folders), Username/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer
I hope you manage to find your video.

Are you really running Windows 98? I sure hope not. :S
I have noticed a few others with the same problem the past couple of weeks. Many of them were able to resolve the issue by doing a low level reformat of the iPod's flash storage using the instructions in this article.

  • After restoring my ipod touch to factory settings, can we recover old apps and songs

We forgot the password to the iPod touch, when we went to restore the iPod to factory setting, it told us after it was complete that it would give us an options whether or not we wanted to apps/songs/contacts back. The problem is after the iPod got restored to factory settings, we never got the option to download the old stuff again.. Is there any way we can recover that or is it just gone?

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.
