HELP! Hard Drive constantly whining FAN?

I believe it's the fan running. It's been doing this for quite some time. Perhaps it is because I have numerous applications open? I have 4 Gigs of ram. The MBP is 2 years old, so it isn't the latest version. (2.4 GHz) Bus speed 800 MHz. How do I stop it from running? Run less programs? Should I get a program like Tech Tool Pro and run it through to diagnose and fix? Bring it to Apple? Help!
(Nothing was replcaed in this MBP. I bought it brand new from Apple back in July 2007).

If you are using both Photoshop and Aperture, you could be putting enough of a load on your Mac to cause the fans to speed up.
Your Mac's fans will idle at around 2000 RPM when you are not doing anything that is processor intensive. The fans are silent at this speed. You can use iStatPro to monitor your fan speed.
There are a couple of things you can check. Open Activity Monitor, and select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU' in the bottom bar. When the fans speed up, check the CPU column to see what is using the CPU. Also check for any processes running amok in the background which may be hogging the CPU. For example, sometimes a printer process will hang and start to hog the CPU. If you find something like this, highlight it and quit it.
Using iStatPro, check that both of your fans are working and are spinning at around the same speed. If one fan were to fail, the other would run all out trying to do the work of both to cool the computer. If this is the case, both fans should be replaced.
You might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test. If one or both thermal sensors have failed, the fans will run all out by default.
Also, is your Mac set up on a hard flat surface so that air can circulate freely? The Mac cools itself both with the fans and also by radiating heat using its aluminum skin. If air can't flow freely, the fans have to work harder.
I think we have similar MBP's, as I bought mine new in September 2007. I seldom hear my fans. I have 12 applications open, and my fans are right at 2000 RPM.
If you have Tech Tool Pro, it wouldn't hurt to run it and see if anything shows up. My feeling is that there is a reason why your fans are making noise, and it would be good to find out why and address whatever the cause is.

Hard drive constantly spinning up and down when asleep

Hi all,
I have a problem with an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Mac mini (late 2012).
When I put the computer to sleep the drive spins up to speed, stops, then immediately starts to spin up again. This goes on and on.
I understand that drives will periodically spin up when asleep for spotlight indexing etc. However this seems like strange behaviour, it just repeats spinning up and down in an endless cycle.
I have had the drive for a while now, as my time machine backup. Interestingly this problem only started after I rearranged my desk when I set up a second monitor. I have a USB 3.0 drive (my scratch disk) that behaves normally.
I have drives set to not sleep in preferences.
I have searched around but can only find posts about people not wanting to wait for drives to spin up when they open finder etc.
What do you think? Could the drive be on its way out? It is a Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb in an Iomega enclosure, for information...

I should have noticed this earlier but it appears the problem is with the mini waking from sleep and thus causing the drives to wake.
When I put the mini top sleep (without the external drives powered on) it constantly wakes and sleeps. The displays dont come back on (untiul you click the mouse or hit a key etc.) but you can hear the internal drive spin up and the sleep light comes on, then goes back to blinking until it wakes again.
I have realised that it must be due to the second monitor that I have connected via the mini display port. It is connected using a mini display port to hdmi cable I bought from play.com. Something to do with the display and thunderbolt is casuing the sleep function to misbehave, I think.
Here is the console log that was created after sleeping the mini, allowing it to go through its weird sleep/wake cycle then fully waking it up again.
Hope that makes sense, it is late and I am tired!

Why is my hard drive constantly running and how do I stop it?

My hard drive is running constantly and I can't find out why. I thought my hard drive might be at capacity so I threw away and backed up a lot of stuff, but it is still running all the time.
On a PC I know how to find what is actually running behind the scenes and how to stop them, but I don't know how to find those same programs on a mac. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Open Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.
With that, all processes can be seen, all CPU, memory and drive use can be monitored and any and all processes can be monitored, sampled, halted, etc.
My hard drive is running constantly and I can't find out why.
A new drive will have indexing running continually until the indexing is done.
mdworker is one of the indexing processes.
Are your Energy Saver Preferences set to spin down hard drives when possible?

Hard drive constantly cycling after 10.5.2 update

I'm not sure if I'm just more aware of it, by my hard drive seems to be cycling constantly since I upgraded to 10.5.2. Everything else seems to be working normally, but I'm concerned about the non-stop activity coming from my drive.
Any thoughts?

I seem to be having the same problem. My Time Machine drive is an external FW800 drive, which I have set to sleep whenever possible. Since 10.5.2, the drive will go to sleep, only to be awaken a few minutes later, cycling like this ad infinitum. I checked activity monitor and neither installdb or a print job is running.
I thought maybe a restart would help, so I restarted the machine and let it sit there with no apps running save Activity Monitor. The drive did the same thing, andI didn't see anything spike when the drive awoke, save for a tiny blip with mds.
Is this happening to anyone else?

Hard drive constantly active?

Hi all,
Couple of days ago a friend of mine asked me for help with his iPod 3G for the battery runs out of power in a very short time. Closer inspection revealed that the hard drive is constantly active and spinning. Since I have never encountered such a problem I hope someone here might no a solution.

I did restart in Safe Mode and the computer seemed to run fine. Then went to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and removed what I thought were the suspect programs, namely Shove Box, Butler, and Smart Reporter. I then restarted my computer normally, and left it on all night. Now the computer is back to running very slowly without the suspect programs running. To give you an example, iTunes took over 45 seconds to load completely.
The question I have is how do I tell what programs are not loaded when I boot in Safe Mode and what programs are loaded when do not boot in safe mode. That way I can try to figure out which program is causing the problems. I did review the article you linked to, and could not find anything that looked problematic except that the Caches folder in my Library folder is 905.3 M. As I write this my hard drive is whirling away for no apparent reason.
In reference to The Hatter's comment, that I could have a corrupt Spotlight index or database would that fit in with the facts that we have thus far?

SSD as second hard drive, now CPU fan isn't working?

Warranty issues aside, I recently installed an OWC 115GB Mercury EXTREME Pro SSD as a second hard drive in my 27/i5 Mid 2010 2.8GHz iMac. I did not change any other configuration setting and the original hard drive is configured as shipped. After shutting everything up the internal fan(s) spin extremely loud (especially on the left/cpu side as you are facing the screen). I installed istat pro and while the temperatures look good to me, it says the CPU fan is not running. I've been searching online for days and can't find anyone else that has the same problem. I've taken the iMac apart twice since the problem started and can't find anything broken, connected upside down, or plugged into the wrong spot. Has anyone by chance run into this before? I heard something about this problem with 2009/2010 imacs: putting in harddrives by your self causes problems with the fan (spinning at full speed all the time), because they are using special harddrives that have a heat sensor built in. without this built in heatsensor, the system doesnt know the temperature of the hardware and runs the fan full throttle just to be sure it doesnt get to hot.

According to that source there are two ways to fix the problem: eather you use a harddrive that carries a built in heat sensor, or you put in an externel heatsensor.

Hard Drives Constantly Failing

I just received a new hard drive Monday through an AASP in Puebla, Mexico, due to a hard drive failure within two months of purchasing my laptop. Sadly, I'm now reinstalling OSX due to what appears to be a very similiar hard drive failure. Luckily, my computer is still under warranty.
I'm not a computer whiz so here are some details of the first hard drive's failure (the current hard drive is failing in much the same manner).
1) The computer became increasingly slow, eventually freezing, forcing me to force restart.
2) Should I be lucky enough that the Macbook would reboot, it would be even slower than before, and freezing sooner than before. This would forece me to reboot, leading to step 1 or 3.
3) The hard drive would no longer boot, forcing me to try suck fixes as...
-repairing from the disk utility, which did not work
-trying fsck which also did not work
4) Reinstalling OSX, going back to step 2, and repeating until the hard drive was no longer recognized.
It appears that either
A) I'm doing something horribly wrong which is destroying my hard drives.
B) There is some other hardware problem that is slowly killing my hard drives, or..
C) My AASP didn't actually replace my hard drive.
What do I do, and would it be possible to get a new Macbook under my warranty?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Apple doesn't publish a policy on replacements, but anecdotally, it seems that if Apple has tried three or four times or more to repair the same problem and not met with success, they'll consider replacing the machine.
Sure, but it's a little different if an AASP's been doing the repairs. Also because it's been the exact same repair over and over, I doubt they'd be willing to replace the entire unit without trying something else first.
Hard drives fail — they just do. One may run like a top for ten years, while the one that came off the assembly line right behind it could fail on Day 2. Odds are that you've simply been unlucky.
Also, yeah, HDDs fail, but it doesn't make sense to have 3 HDDs fail in quick succession.
Seems like, which came first...the chicken or the egg...except it's which came first, the freezing or the directory corruption.
You could very well have a failed/failing hard drive flex cable (connects the drive to the logic board) or a failed/failing controller on the logic board. I'd bet flex cable myself, but it's hard to say without working with the machine firsthand. The bad cable causes the computer to freeze, which causes you to force it to shut off, which means files don't get put away properly. This leads to data corruption, partition map corruption, volume header corruption, all kinds of stuff that makes it impossible to boot. It snowballs from there each time you try to use it.
I'd agree it's possible to coincidentally have more than one failed drive in a row, absolutely. But for them to all have the exact same problem and the exact same progression to me indicates a bigger problem.

Hard drive constantly being searched

Ever since I updated to Mavericks my Hard Disk constantly searches. I have tried turning off Spot Light Indexing and Time Machine. I have even reformatted the HD and reinstalled the OS and then re-installed all my files and apps. By the way I could not find a good posting on how to easily do that, took me 2 days and hours on the phone with Mac support. When I look at the Activity Monitor it shows the Kernel is constantly accessing the Hard Drive. Is there anyway to go back to Mountain Lion?

Hard drive constantly clicking

The 2TB hard drive of my 2011 iMac is almost constantly clicking like toc-toc....toc-toc....toc-toc, with a frequency of about 30 times per minute, while "at rest" (no activity from keyboard or anything). Funny thing is, it does it too when I'm running Windows (through Bootcamp). Is this normal?

Please Help - Hard Drive Gone - Won't Mount - No AppleCare...

Hi guys,
I'm in trouble here..
I was loading a bunch of photos from an external drive to iPhoto and my iMac froze up for a long time.
I couldn't do anything at all - so I finally force-powered down.
When I powered back up - My Hard Drive was gone and Finder will not open.
Other applications in my dock such as web browsers, iTunes etc. seem to be unaffected - I can also access Disk Utility and other Apps through Spotlight, but No sign of my "Macintosh HD".
I ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility - and here's the report it provided:

We usually try to give folks who come here simplified advice that keeps them comfortable troubleshooting and repairing their Macs and won;t raise other issues for them. Command line tools don't usually fall into the simplified category and fsck for Mac OS X Tiger is not recommended by Apple, except as a last resort. It is known to cause other issues.
From the Apple Knowledge Base article that Dale has linked below;
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.
If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck.
IMO, it isn't helpful for you to come along and contradict sound advice from folks who have used the Knowledge Base and are aware of Apple's recommendations because you think that you know better.

Mac Pro slowing to a snail's pace and hard drive constantly active

My Mac Pro is running very slowly. Programs are slow to load, I frequently get "beach balls" for non-intensive operations, and the hard disk never seems to stop. Both Safari and Firefox are especially slow. This is without running any resource intensive programs like video editors, or Photoshop. My wife is having the same problem on her account on the same computer. I have repaired disk permissions, reset PRAM, manually run the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts, and even done a reformat and reinstall. Only about 3/8 of the primary hard drive is used. Any help would be appreciated.

Ever since I upgraded to Lightroom 6 my hard drive hasn't taken a break while Lightroom is open. It constantly runs until I close Lightroom. Another issue I'm having is not all my NEF files are converting to dng? Anyone else having these issues?

Nah...if you choose a less-than-sensible setting in BIOS, an arm holding a hammer will come out of the LCD and smack you...that's a part of ThinkVantage that only a few people know about...
How many processes do you have running on a freshly booted machine?

Hard drive constantly reading Imac

I have an imac 24inch (early 2008 model) and have had it repaired once for ram failure and 6 months later there is a sudden juddering sound coming from the hard drive.
Basically even when not in use the hard drive seems to be reading itself constantly. Something which i am worried about.
I have verified disk permissions, repaired disk etc and nothing. I have also run the Tech Tool Deluxe software which claims everything is in order.
I was wondering if this problem is worth contacting apple towards or is it completely not serious.
Oh and i also have apple care should this problem need fixing.

Go up to the top of the Activity Monitor window and make sure that "All Processes" is selected in the box and then look at the open Process. The one(s) that are showing numbers in the list below the % sing are the one(s) currently working.
It may or may not be dyeing, but there is nothing you can do for a noisy HD except have it replaced.
+Example: the original 160GB Seagate Barracuda that came in my Early Core Duo was a little noisy from day one, but it still refuses to die. For size reasons more than noise, I removed it from my iMac and put it into an External hard drive enclosure to use as a bootable clone drive.+

Terminal help - hard drive rescue

Hi, I have a little bit of a problem. My hard drive is unbootable, but still mountable. *My goal is to gain access to the hard drive, and copy everything on it to an external hard drive*. Note, because it's unbootable, I don't have a lot of options.
Also, *the Firewire port on the machine is not working*. Thus, any file transferring must be accomplished over USB or Ethernet. I also have access another Mac, if that would be of any assistance. Now let me throw you some ideas here. (For the record, I don't know if any of this will help, but it's worth a try.) *I have booted the machine off the Leopard Install Disc. This now gives you access to several options:*
*Startup Disk. Disk Utility. Terminal. System Profiler. Network Profiler.*
Something tells me Terminal might be able to make some magic happen. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the voodoo commands that can be issued in it to get this plan into action. I hear rumors about something called Single User Mode, however I know very little about it (other than, if entering the wrong command, erasing your drive).
So if anyone out there has any suggestion as to how to set this up, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

How do you know the disk is mountable? Do you see it with Disk Utility when booted with the install disk? Try this, if you downloaded the 10.5.2 COMBO update before experiencing your problem. Boot with the install disk, select your language, select Disk Utility from Utilities->File->Open disk image, select the combo image, mount it, and try to run it, selecting the hosed HD. If you don't have the COMBO update, download it from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate .html, and transfer it to the HD via USB or ethernet from another computer. Since you don't have an operable FireWire port, using target disk mode (the preferred option) is out.
