  • I imported my photos from an external hard drive into Lightroom, edited my photos but what next...?!

    Adobe,
I imported my photos from an external hard drive into Lightroom, edited my photos and when i decided to export them the originals had not been updated and the deleted photos had not been deleted. How do i set it up so that once i import the photos, edit them and export they are then placed back in their original folder edited and updated?
I have managed to export the photos to another file but these were exported with an Adobe.xmp file. What is this and is this necessary?
    Thanks for your help!

It's important to realise that LR is a DAM (Digital Asset Management) application - no images are actually imported into LR only links to where they are. Secondly, the details of any edits that you make to your images are kept only in the database and/or xmp files depending how you set this up in Preferences. In the general workflow e.g. edit in Lightroom, further edit in Photoshop and returning to LR then creating xmp files aren't really necessary. So just to emphasise - edits are stored in the LR's database, the original RAW images themselves don't change (non destructive editing). You can prove this yourself by desaturating an image (turning it into a B+W) and then look at the original images in Explorer - you'll see it's still being shown in colour.
Exporting an image is something different. By implication, you've finished with the image and perhaps want to save an image for posting on the web somewhere. Now assuming your not using any additonal and freely available LR export plug-ins, one way would be to Export a jpeg image to a folder on the desktop and this is allowed for in the Export dialogue. At this time LR reads any edits from it's database and applies those to the exported jpeg (or tiff) file it's going to send to the folder on the desktop.
As mentioned earlier, any edits and keywords etc are stored in LR's database - original RAW files remain untouched. XMP files also store the edits if LR is set up to create xmp files (in Preferences) but these are not really necessary unless you are going to be editing an already edited RAW file in another application. As an example - you import into LR's library a scanned negative. Now because strictly speaking LR isn't designed to work with negative images, you now open this file via Bridge into ACR and from here reverse the negative into a positive image. All fine and good except when you go back into LR what's shown is still a negative so what is needed is to update the metadata (LR > Metadata > Read Metadata from file) which will force LR to read the newly created metadata from the xmp file that Bridge generated. As already suggested, if you're happy editing your RAW files in LR and only LR then xmp files aren't really necessary - all the data being saved in LR's database.
Hope this has been of some help but if I might also suggest, purchasing a good book on LR from the outset thus getting to really know LR will pay dividends further on down the line.

  • How do i download my files from an external hard drive to my new macbook pro

Can you not just drag them from the external drive to a folder on your new computer?

  • Moving photos from an external hard drive to iPhoto

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred all of my photos from a Passport external hard drive into iPhoto.
I thought it worked very well but when I pull up the photos in the new computer's iPhoto they are smaller and the resolution is worse than on my old Macbook. I have some of the same photos saved on Dropbox and when I downloaded them and opened them in iPhoto they were larger and the resolution better.
Any suggestions? Is the external hard drive at fault or did I make a mistake when transferring the files to my new Macbook - I just dragged and dropped them.
    Thanks for the help!

No idea - how about some information
What version of iPhtoo? Of the OS? What exactly did you do and how did you do it?
Importing photos to iPhoto has no effect on the source photo so your post does not make sense
The most basic answer it to launch iPhoto and drag the photos form the External drive to the iPhoto window which imports them into iPhoto ahas no effect on the photos on the EHD

  • How do I download audio cds from my external hard drive to i-tunes, how do I download audio cds from my external hard drive to i-tunes

My PC laptop died so I had to move audiobooks that I had downloaded to I-Tunes to an external hard drive. I now have a new PC laptop and want to transfer these audiobooks back to the I-Tunes on the laptop. How do I do that?

The easiest way would be to just attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. iMovie should see it next time you open iMovie.
If you are going for portability, you can attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. Then open iMovie.
Then click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. You should see your external drive listed in the Project Library and the Event Library.
To make a COPY just drag the icon for your project to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library List.
To MOVE it, hold down the command key while you drag.
If you want to edit the project, you will also want any Events, Photos, or Music referenced in the Project. To get those, click on the Project to select it (it is now on the MacBook Pro) and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA.

  • How do I transfer my photos from one external hard drive to another?

I have a 500 GB eternal hard drive that I use as storage for all my photos. My iphoto uses this drive as the default library for my iphoto. I have run out of space on this drive. I have a new 1TB external drive that is mac OS formatted that I would like to move the photo library to. I tried to copy all the files on the 500GB drive and paste them to the new 1TB drive. Everything copied over but when I select the new 1TB drive as the default library, iphoto does not see any files on the new drive even though they are there. Did I copy the files incorrectly? Or does anyone have a suggestion on how to get iphoto to recognize the files on the new drive?

See > iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location
If you moved your iPhoto Library correctly and then double-click the iPhoto Library icon in the new location, it should open iPhoto and remember the new location.

  • How do I import movie files from my external hard drive into I-Tunes?

    Hello
I have a whole load of movies and tv shows stored on an external hard drive. I would like to import a few of them into I-Tunes and then on to my Ipad because I'm going travelling tonight.
I'm dragging the file into I-Tunes but it won't copy. They are mp4 files.
I have one mkv file which I am trying to drag also.
If anyone has any tips I would be grateful.

im not sure why the mp4's wont go i, but the mkv is not a supported format. i would look into some sort of video converter.

  • How do I import wav files from an external hard drive into itunes converting to aac?

I have 270 gig of wav files on an external hard drive.  I am having trouble finding a way to import these into itunes while converting to aac

Note that .wav files do not carry a tag. If you import files of the form ..\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name> into iTunes it will fill in the name property as the filename ## <Name> and all other fields will be blank.  Assuming there is useful data in the path to capture, use Edit > Preferences > Avanced and disable the Keep... and Copy... options before adding the tracks to iTunes. You can then use the script TagFromFilename to fill in the blanks. Once this information is there you can convert the files to their new format and the converted files will inherit the track details.
You might want to consider initially converting to Apple Lossless which could halve the physical size of the collection with no loss of quality, and permanently embed the tag details. You can then choose to make a downsampled collection while retaining the full quality lossless copies and completely discarding the .wav originals.

  • How I can transfer photos from an external hard drive to my mac?

    Hello,
I need help on how to transfer photos from an external hard drive (sumsung make) to my mac? If possible can you please tell me step by step, and also how I can post a video that was taken from my iPhone to facebook. It keeps telling me my video is being encoded, and then could not process. I must be dunce really. Your help is greatly appreciated.

What files are they? Is it a clone, a TM backup, or simply drag 'n drop?
If it's the latter, simply drag them back. If something else, please post back with detailed info.

  • When I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  I always download my photos onto an external hard drive.

Yesterday,I downloaded an update for Lightroom 5.  Now when I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  The message comes up right after I click import, before I choose a file to upload. Here is the information I can think of that might be needed to answer this question:
    - I always download my photos onto an external hard drive. It is about 10 % full.
    - It says I have Lightroom 5.6  64 bit
    - I am working from a newer laptop (Windows).  The internal drive on the laptop has 289 gb and I am using 61 gb total memory.
    - I have edited 2794 photos in Lightroom and it is all in one catalog.
    - I did not have this problem until I made the update.  I did have my first "bug" earlier this week when one of my photos had a line show up through the middle of it when I exported it. I was able to export it a second time without the line.
If there is more info. needed, let me know.  I do photography as a hobby and know enough about Lightroom to edit out blemishes and adjust color balance, but not too much more, so forgive my ignorance if this is an obvious fix.
    Sincerely,
    Adrianne

Not Enough Memory typically refers to RAM.  How much RAM do you have on your 64-bit OS computer?  Do you have other programs running that may be using most of the memory?

I have so many photos on my Mac I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to the external hard drive that is plugged into my iMac.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!
    edited.

How do I find my photos on my external hard drive backed up using Time Machine?
My hard drive died so this is my only storage. The hard drive was from an early 2008 Macbook Pro.
I had recently installed Snow Leopard.

If they’re in an iPhoto library, look in the Pictures folder of your home folder first. Otherwise, they’ll be in the location corresponding to the one you saved them to.

If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
