Help! How do i get rid of self-assigned IP address? Virgin Media & Ibook

Hey all, first time here. Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me (or the people at virgin!) can help.
I have home broadband from Virgin as of last night. Self-set up the modem (Cisco), Router (D-link) and connection to my Ibook, running Tiger 10.4.11
Router and modem seem to be working fine. Green lights all round. Plus last night i had an ethernet connection runnign fine and even got a wireless connection to the Ibook. All good.
This morning, twenty minutes of internet use, then bumped off. No connection.
Checked under System Preferences, Network, Airport and got a message saying Airport has 'a self assigned IP address and cannot connect to internet.'
I assume the problem therefore is with the Ibook talking to the router (sorry, not very technical so 'talking' is best i can do).
Tried switching off the firewall. Still no joy. Airport can see my router in the list, and even has it first in preferred networks to join list. I get a five bar signal when i select it from Airport but how do i rid the computer of the 'Self-assigned IP address' ?
Please help, it's driving me mad! Apple blame Virgin, Virgin blame Router manufacturer, Router manufacturer blame Apple. It's an endless circle of **** and call-centres!!!
Cheers!
Dan

Hi Dan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
"self-assigned IP address" simply means it's not getting an IP from the device responsible for handing out IPs, the Router in your instance.
Does Ethernet still work fine?
Go to System Preferences
Click Network
Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

  • Can't get rid of self assigned IP address

    Hello,
I have been trying to resolve this problem by myself for the last 4 days (by googling and reading forums) but nothing works so here I am.
I moved last Tuesday and everything worked fine until that day. Since I am in my new apartment, I can't connect to the Internet because of a self assigned IP address. Here is more info:
-I have a new modem since I moved (the apartment where I was living was furnished and had a modem already). However, I am using the same service provider and modem than the apartment I was subletting.
-I only have a modem (no router) and I use the Ethernet to connect.
-I am writing this message from a PC laptop which confirms that the modem is working fine and that the ethernet cable is fine, etc.
-I did many rounds of shutting down the computer, renew DHCP, unplugging the modem (from 1 minute to 10 hours) and plugging everything back.
-I called the ISP but they could not help (they just repeated the same instructions that I could find in the guide)...They have no idea how I can get rid of the self assigned IP address.
The problem is still the same, I can't get rid of the self assigned IP address (169.xxx).
Please help if you know other tricks to fix that issue...
    Thanks a LOT in advance!!
    Julie

Re 1) Setting up a new account won't solve the problem in itself but it will help narrow down the cause. The idea is this: the problem might be caused by something system-wide (e.g. a preference file in /Library/Preferences) or it might be caused by something that is specific to your account (e.g. a preference file in yourhome/Library/Preferences). If we knew which, we could target the troubleshooting appropriately. The easiest way to figure out which is to create a new user, log in as that user and see if the problem remains. If it does, it must be system-wide; if not, it is specific to your account.
Are you using any firewall software? If you are using Tiger's built-in firewall, how is it configured?

I have a new iPad. I am using Comcast as my email provider but when I send a message, it pulls up the facebook email addresses for my  contacts  instead of the addresses stored in my comcast account.  How can I get rid of the Facebook email addresses? The comcast addresses are stored in the comcast (xfinity) app.  I do not use the "mail" or "contacts" apps ....I go straight to comcast (xfinity).  I wish I could start over!!!  thanks.
    iPad

I could be wrong, but it sounds like Facebook imported to your contacts.  I have the Xfinity app on my new ipad, too, but none of my stored contacts from the online version are showing, only what I manually entered into the iPads contacts are there.  When I did add the FB app, I did not grant it permission to push and pull from my ipad (not a fan of FB knowing every detail about me), so that may be where our difference lies.  You could try to open the app and change your privacy settings, or delete it and then reinstall without granting permissions to integrate.
I'm sure someone here with a lot more knowledge then me can probably diagnose your issue better, though.  Good luck!

  • Can't get rid of self-assigned IP in Network Preferences on MacbookPro

My wife's Macbook Air has a normal external IP address and she can connect to our Verizon FIOS network without any issues.  My Macbook Pro has a self-assigned IP address and will NOT connect at all.  I'm not sure when this happened as we usually use the network from our Time Capsule that is plugged into the router and that continues to work for both of us.  Both computers are running 10.7.4.
I've tried adding the DNS servers that she has listed on her computer and renewing the DHCP lease but continue to get a self-assigned IP.  I also followed the suggestions here with no changes to the current problem:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os-x/
Any suggestions on how to fix this so that the Macbook Pro will allow the IP to come through the router instead of being self-assigned?  Is there another Verizon tech support place I should be soliciting help?  Thanks in advance.

I've been searching for two days to figure this out.  Your solution worked perfect and I was online in 1 minute!  Thanks so very much.

  • How do I get rid of the /welcome subdomain address from my website address?

My website cobbity.com redirects to cobbity.com/welcome when opened on home page, how can I get rid of this problem?
    thanks in advance

Why is this a problem? It is perfectly normal - Welcome is the very first page of your website, so when someone enters your url, it will go to the first page of your site which happens to be http://www.cobbity.com/Welcome.html.
My own site is the same - my first page is welcome and when someone types in my url it goes to http://www.domain.com/Welcome.html. Normal.
Where are you publishing to? MobileMe or an external server such as GoDaddy? If MMe, then you can change the way in which you link your domain name to your site - rather than using CNAME forwarding, change it to masked web forwarding. If you use this, then you forward your domain name to web.me.com/username/sitename and all that you will then see is http://www.domain.com for every single page if this is what you want?
Only problem with this is that people cannot bookmark individual pages of your site, just the whole site.

  • Ethernet card issue...can't get rid of self-assigned IP

    Hi folks,
I am using an circa 2005 iMac G5 PPC desktop with 10.5.8. I am trying to connect the iMac to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable, but seem to be having problems with my ethernet card. When I plug into the TC ethernet port, the TC drive, does not mount and I cannot access the worldwide web.
When I go to System Preferences --> Networking, the tab on the left for ethernet connection shows a green dot, says "self-assigned IP" and the status says "connected" PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE ETHERNET CABLE TO THE TIME CAPSULE. It shows a "self-assigned" IP (DHCP selected) of 169.254.69.249, even though I know my TC is 10.0.1.1.  Turning the ethernet off then back on, renewing the DHCP lease, nothing seems to be able to make this 169 IP address go away. The wireless connection to the TC is just fine... everything does what it should, I just can't get the ethernet cable connection to work.
Out of curriosity, I went to the System Profiler, and on the network tab it shows ethernet IPv4 169.254.69.249 (name en0).
I know it's not the Time Capsule, as I connected my laptop to it just fine via ethernet. The TC was IP 10.0.1.1 and it assigned 10.0.1.5 to my laptop (I have a variety of devices on my network), and I was able to transfer data and access the internet with no issues whatsoever.
I live in an 32 story apartment with a built-in ethernet network and ISP included in my rent. It's pretty nice, high speed. I connect from the wall to the Time Capsule via ethernet (circle dot connection port, so I know I have the right port), and then wirelessly out to a couple of laptops, a couple of Airport Express, and of course my desktop.
Bottom line, I think the ethernet card on iMac G5 desktop has gone bad: A few questions:
    (1) Any ideas what may be wrong? Has anyone seen this self-assigned IP thing that won't go away?
    (2) Any ideas how to fix it?
    (3) How much will it cost? It may be time to replace my 6-year old desk top computer.
    Thanks, Andy

I've swapped out several cables still with no luck, and the current cable definitely has 8 pins and worked with my laptop, so I'm confident it's not the cable. Also, the Time Capsule seems to be OK, because it too worked with my laptop using the same port. The only variable that doesn't seem to be cooperating is my desktop computer.
Also, I have tried to manually assign an IP consistent with the network & appropriate subnet mask. It seems to take the IP address manually, but still I can't get internet access, and can't ping the Time Capsule in network utility either.
Finally, when I connect the desktop directly to my wall outlet, taking the router out of the equation entirely, network diagnostics shows ethernet failure...
Does that sound like a bad ethernet card?
What does it take to replace an ethernet card in an iMac G5?
    Cheers, Thanks, Andy

  • "Other" takes up 8GB on my Ipad2 (16GB)! How do I get rid of it?

I recently reseted my IPads 2's settings only to find out that I have no memory left! It couldn't have been my music because I had previously deleted a lot of my songs. So I checked on ITunes to see what could have been the problem. I found out that "Other" takes up 8.4 GB! What the heck is "other" and why is it taking up so much space? Also is there anyway I can remove it? I'd appreciate any help.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How do I get rid of the "Authentification required" notice

Please help how do I get rid of this annoying notice?

Google never asks for a password that way. Looks like malware. Possibly that site is infected, or if it occurs on multiple sites, you could have a bad add-on.
The Refresh may resolve it but if it comes back, here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning out bad add-ons. Sorry for the length -- it's not as bad as it sounds:
    (1) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    (2) Open Firefox's '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click '''Plugins'''. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click '''Extensions'''. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    (3) You can search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
    Success?
