Help: How do I mass point iTunes to all my original mp3 files on e: drive?

This seems pretty straight forward but I can't seem to figure this out. When I try to play a song on my iTunes library I get a "The song XXX could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" The source is on my external hard drive on E:. But I have over 3,000 songs and most of which now require I locate the source individually. Is there a way that I can point iTunes to look for all songs on my e:drive? The songs are categorized and separated in folders by artist and album name. This makes it harder to point in mass. Looking for some answers here?

I just did this myself with my 6000-odd MP3 files.
First, make a new Library - hold down "Shift" as you launch iTunes and you'll get a dialog box that says "Choose Library / make New Library". Make a new library and call it "All MP3s from E:" or something you'll remember. iTunes will launch with a BLANK playlist.
Then, go to "File -> Add Folder To Library" and select the master folder that all your MP3s are in. When you say "OK" iTunes should scan all your files and add them to this new, blank library. So long as you do not tell iTunes to "Consolidate Library" all your files should remain in their current location (Consolidating seems to copy all your files into the iTunes Music folder which will take up extra hard drive space). KEEP IN MIND that if the E: drive is a remote hard drive that it must be switched on and connected to the PC or the link to the song in the Library will break (perhaps this is what's happening to your current library list)?
When you re-launch iTunes it should automaticallly re-load your newly made Library file - see "Using Multiple Libraries" in the iTunes Help area for info on how to restore the default Library if you ever need to.
Let me know if this works - it did for me anyway.

  • How can I completely remove iTunes and all associated files/programs from my Windows PC?

How can I completely remove iTunes and all associated files/programs from my Windows PC?

iTunes, along with Quick Time, iCloud, Apple Software Update, Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Application Support can all be removed from your PC by uninstalling them using 'Uninstall or change a program' in Control Panel. The only obvious thing that will be left behind is your iTunes library which remains untouched. If you want to remove that as well it's just a question of deleting it.
    Hope that helps.

My suggestion to use the smart playlist was more along the lines of making one list with rules to show everything in your library as long as it was kind "mpeg" (= mp3).
Smart playlists cannot be edited manually, only by changing the rules.  You can use them as the basis for another smart playlist though.
There is added overhead to using smart playlists, so don't go overboard.

  • How do you create a save as default folder for MP3 files used Captivate text to audio voices files?

How do you create a save as default folder for MP3 files used Captivate text to audio voices files?

    Hi Ed
Thank you for contacting me, however I already know how to save text to
audio files via timeline using the Export feature.
So my question was not entirely clear and I apologize for that.  To explain
further, whenever I save a text to audio file, captivate takes me to a
default save as folder where I then have browse back to my production
folder where I am keeping all my Txt to Aud files.  This is very tedious
process when you have alot of files to save.  So my question was is there a
way to configure captivate so I can make my production folder the default
file for whenever I save a Txt to Audio file through Export feature that
the system automatically takes me to that production folder, and I am
spared the long tedious process of saving the file manually to the
    prodcution folder I want.
I have copy the pathway to the production folder in the URL filed in the
Save As dialoge box and that workaround as cut the work down but I still
have to paste that URL field to point the file to the right folder. So it
would be nice if I could do everything automatically.  Microsoft makes this
capability in their MS Office applications, so I was thinking Adobe might
do the same thing.  Your help with this would be appreicated,
    Thanks

  • Horrors: How do I get all my original photo files back out of iPhoto 9.1.2?

In my heart I KNEW I should never have upgraded iPhoto when the update came in for 9.1.2. But I had no idea what it was going to do. Now, to my horror, I have found out.
It has EATEN all the original photo files in my Home/Pictures folder and hidden them inside a single iPhoto database! Yikes.
I discovered this nightmare when I tried to find the original hi-res of a certain photo, and searched my Mac for it by filename – the one assigned to it by my camera.
All the original and modified versions of the file should have appeared in the search box – but no original appeared, sending me into a total panic. I also searched my laptop and back-up drive to no avail. Then I looked in the Home/Pictures folder and there were no photo files there, when there used to be hundreds. Just one single iPhoto Library file.
I felt sick, I thought I had lost all my original photos.
So now I have two problems, and questions:
    1) iPhoto only displays photos from the last 18 months, so how do you access all the photos from years back now?
    2) How can I export ALL my photos back out of the iPhoto database so I can have them where I can see them on my Mac again – as individual files in my Pictures folder like they were before?
    Oh, and one other question:
What can I use instead of iPhoto? Can I revert to an earlier version? Or is there an application that I can import photos to that will leave the original files where they are? Then I can make a back-up of the originals before importing them into iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Sarah
PS: How do I change my Apple Discussions username?

There's no reason to use the Finder to access your photos. That's what iPhoto is for.  THe following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation   which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3.Show File:
    a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    b. On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

I backed up files onto an external hard rive form my old PC. Now I want to retrieve the files to put on my mac but it is telling me to format it to Mac. How can I do this without erasing all of the data on my hard drive?

Your drive was used with a PC and formatted NTFS which is proprietary Microsoft format.
You need to install a third party program that will read the NTFS format.
There is various software from PARAGON, Tuxera and NTFS-3G
When you get the data off and have verified it to be good, reformat the drive either HFS+ for Mac use only, or for Mac and PC use then MSDOS (FAT32) for under 4GB files (best) or exFAT (for larger than 4GB files) is proprietary and Microsoft is appling for a patent, which would likely mean OS X won't be allowed to read it anymore without a licensing fee and you'l have to pay another third party software company to read the format, just like NTFS is.
The less you have to rely upon third party sources to read your drives the better, this way if you have a issue and need to read the drive on another machine you don't need the software, and a internet connection and a credit card and...and...and...

If the file was not originally from iTunes, you'll need to redownload it from it's original source or rerip it from the CD.  Files can sometimes go bad and become corrupted.  As to how or why that happens, there are a number of ways.
What format are the problematic tracks in? Have you tried converting them to another format in iTunes?

  • I use the "Bootcamp" on my Mac to work between Mac and Windows. How do I get my iTunes music from the Mac side of my hard drive to the Windows side?

I use my "Bootcamp" harddrive to work on both the Mac side and Windows7 side of my computer. How do I get my Itunes Library from the Mac side to the Windows side of my Mac Book Pro?

Time Capsule is for backing up your data. It's not really a solution for live file storage; using it will not reduce the bloat of your boot volume.
If you have a lot of movies, music, etc. in your iTunes Library, that can be a good thing to move to an external drive. Here's how:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
After you follow those instructions to copy your media over to the external drive and point iTunes to it, you can delete it from your internal drive.

  • How Do I Set Up Itunes To Search For Songs In An External Hard Drive?

I would like to keep my music on an external hard drive, how do I set up Itunes so that it goes right to that drive and folder when updating or the Itunes store placing the songs I purchase in the external drive?

Ok, here's my deal. I backed up our old laptop onto an external drive. We got the new laptop and my wife bought a new iPod. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes onto the new computer and posted the questions above. I guess I need more help so here goes.
Is there a way to use the library she had on the old laptop? I'm writing this on her behalf as she is basically technically ingorant and I am only slightly more knowledgeable but I know zero about iPods. Apparently she had her old library set up so some of the songs on her iPod we linked to the songs in my daughters iTunes folder? So.....is there a way to use the old library and if so, will it automatically find the mapping she set-up previously? If not, how do I go about getting this all sorted out? THANKS!!

  • How can I restore my itunes on a new computer from an external hard drive without a back up?

How can I restore my itunes on a new computer?
I use an external hard drive to store all my information i.e. music / apps / movies but my current laptop has just blown up so now using a temp laptop.
I am looking to try & restore my itunes & all of its information like my playlists / apps & everything else from the hard drive but it does not have a back up in the programmes to restore from that.
    Currently running Windows 7.
All I want to do is have my itunes back without the pain of looking & reloading all my info which will take me an age.
Any hints tips or advice that has worked for you would be greatly appreciated.

Did you store the media library files on the external drive as well?
If so press and hold down shift as you start iTunes, use the choose option, and connect to the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
If not you will need to start a new library and import the content into it. Do you have any devices that might hold ratings and playlists that could be recovered? If so see the second and third entries from the bottom of the table of recovery tools in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device, and read the rest of it if you have any iOS devices.

    Gah,
The best way to do that is to make a copy of each song.  Leave the tags in the originals alone, but in the mixtape copies change the Album name (something like "Gah's Christmas MIxtape") and the Album Artist ("Compiled by Gah").

  • My itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive,  rather than my external drive ( originally set up to as default ).  How do I re-set itunes to look for my library on the external drive ?

Suddenly, after a year of good operation,  my itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive, rather than the external drive it had been set up to as default   How do I get it to search for the stored library on the external drive again ?

    Quit iTunes.
    On the external drive;
1 - Create new folder called iTunes (or whatever you want).
2 - Move your music folder into this.
3 - Go to the the C: drive iTunes folder.
4 - Copy the iTunes library.itl file into the iTunes folder on the external drive.
5 - Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
6 - Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library.itl file you just copied to the external.
