Help! - how to complete hardware test on newly purchased Powerbook

Hi All,
I am taking delivery of a 1.25Ghz 15" Powerbook tomorrow after a successful bid on a local online auction. As part of the terms of sale the PB is sold with "no operating system installed/hard drive formatted" and the PB is warranted to be in working order, although under the sale terms I have 5 days from delivery to return it if it is not in full working order.
I have purchased a retail version of OSX Tiger and plan to immediately install it onto the PB after running Disk Utility to "zero" the hard drive. After telephoning Applecare this week they are sending me the Apple Hardware Test disk for this model PB although unfortunately they advised that it may take up to 3 weeks for delivery (well outside the 5 day window I have to check the condition of the PB).
Outside of taking the PB to my local Apple Service Centre, can anyone recommend alternative diagnostic software or procedures I could carry out to check that this PB is in full working order before the expiry of the 5 day no return period?

1bogdan:
Congratulations! You have just gotten yourself a good computer.
Tech Tool Pro is a suite of diagnostic and repair utilities. It does Hardware Tests among other things. It seems that 5 days to check things out is a very short time.
That said, unless there are serious hardware issues, even Apple Hardware Test does not always pick it up right on the first or second or third run. You main concerns with this computer are:
1. hard disk drive - if there is a problem here you likely will not be able to successfully install and or run the 'Book.
2. Logic board - this may not show up right away, and AHT sometimes has difficulty picking it up.
After formatting and installing, I suggest you run Repair Disk in Disk Utilities.
Here is a suggested procedure for getting started with reformat, zero all data and re-install:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! Be sure you have a tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (optional).
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC)
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please do post back with an update or further questions.
Good luck.

  • I really need help with the Apple Hardware Test!

I have been having problems with the computer freezing. The other night the only way I was able to start it up was to boot off the install disk. My brother being fairly savy with Macs helped me with this. Long story short, I uninstalled and reinstalled all of my non Mac programs. This happened three days ago. Everything seemed fine. Then tonight, same thing. My screen froze, and I shut it down. I couldn't access anything. I zapped the pram, and my user screen came on. When I tried to log in it froze again. Then it started just shutting off on it's own. Everytime I turn on the computer it shuts off. So then I tried holding down the shift key, then by accident, I held down the D key. I thought I remembered my brother doing this. Then the Apple Hardware Test screen came on, so I did the test. It said: A harware error is detected 4HD?11?40000004:SATA(0,0)
What does this mean and what do I do?

SATA would very likely mean your hard drive is failing or has failed. Do you have AppleCare?

  • Hard drive issues; how to run hardware test

A couple of weeks ago my hard drive experienced what I would call "minor crashes". The computer booted up to the grey box with the question mark, and would do nothing more. The hard drive also made unpleasant noises. I think I got it back by resetting PRAM, but it happened a second time, and then a PRAM reset again got it back. Needless to say, I'm nervous about this drive.
I have Apple Care until January '09 (this is an '06 Intel machine) and figure I should try to move on figuring out what's up ASAP (both because I don't want a drive failure, and because I only have a few more months of Care).
I'm guessing that I should run the extended hardware test, but I can't seem to get it going using the Leopard disk I used to upgrade the OS. Do I need the original install disks (which I can't find, of course!)? What else can I do to determine if I have an issue that calls for hard drive replacement? If I need a new hard drive (it now seems small at 250gb anyhow), will I be able to do it myself (assuming Apple Care won't take care of it)?
    Any insights welcome. Thanks!

Give it a try, if not you'll need to dig up your Disk 1!
+Some Intel-based Macs ship with Apple Hardware Test and Mac OS X 10.4.x preinstalled on the hard drive. If an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is performed using a retail Leopard installation disc, Apple Hardware Test will be erased and not reinstalled on these Macs.+
+If you're in this situation and need to use Apple Hardware Test, simply start from the DVD that came with your computer (not the Leopard installation disc) while holding the "D" key. Apple Hardware Test will run from the DVD.+

  • Help and Advice Please : Hardware Test Error Alert

    hello,
i ran the hardware test two days ago and i got error message like this :
    4SNS/1/40000000: 'Tm0P'
can anybody tell me what is this ? i ran through the other mac forums and found that this is a logicboard problem ?
My mbook pro is running 5 months now, and seemed not to be having any problem. the fan is fine, no buzzin screen, etc.
    what should i do ?
    happy xmas and...
    many thanks !

I have recently been having a bad slowdown problem with my MBP 15" (only had for 2 months). My first real problem was when it suddenly slowed down and I powered it down to reboot. Nothing seemed to get power at all after this and it wouldn't start up, so I took it in to have the logicboard replaced since that seemed the obvious problem. Now I notice that it still suffers extreme slowdown after running for a few hours (even with no fans starting up). Sometimes it takes 5+ minutes just to open the system preferences, or anything. I just ran the hardware test and got a similar error code that this topic mentions (cant seem to create a topic even logged in).
    4SNS/1/40000000: TB0T
Seems strange that the NEW logicbard would be faulty, but thought I'd get some feedback before I go back for the second time in 2 months......sigh.

  • How can I successfully install a newly purchased Adobe Photoshop CS6? Step by step ....

How can I successfully install a newly purhcased Adobe Photoshop CS 6? I've tried many, many times but always run into something which seems not to work the way it's supposed to. I can't tell you what I've done, it's been too many things. I want to start at the beginning. I need a step by step, preferable over the phone, talk through the process.

There's not enough information here or in your other post http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1105936 to help you at the moment.
Which operating system? Cloud or disk version or download version?
Any error messages? what do they say?
Download or disk: It should be a case of double click the installer, enter your serial and let the installer finish.

  • How to differentiate migrated assets and newly purchased assets?

    Hello Experts,
I would like to make a report for fixed assets, and that report has a field for beginning balance.
I have a question on this beginning balance field.
As you know, we have migrated fixed assets from legacy system and new assets that are purchased at SAP system.
When I make above report, how do I differentiate migrated assets and newly purchased assets from the beginning balance point of view?
Please let me know the database fields to classify above two things.
    Thanks.
    BR,
    Chris

    Hello Lakshmaiah and Ajay,
The reason we want to have this kind of report is that this one is for tax reporting.
As Ajay mentioned, SAP standard asset reports like S_ALR_87011990 is good but they are not enough.
When I looked around some tables related to fixed asset values, I found out there are 2 fields might be related to above questions.
    They are ANLC-KANSW and ANLC-ANSWL.
There is no value at ANLC-KANSW field in SAP cut-over year if it is new asset, and ANLC-ANSWL has no value if it is migrated asset.
I guess if I use above 2 fields, I might be able to classify two things.
Do you guys agree with me?
    Thanks.
    BR,
    Chris

    Hi Rajvidya Das,
Do the following, then try again:
    1.     Close all open apps: Double click on the Home key and then swipe up on each of the thumbnails that appear above the open app icons
    2.     Sign out of the iTunes store: Settings>iTunes & App Store, click on your Apple/iTunes ID, then sign out
    3.     Check Settings>Safari, and make sure that "Block Cookies" is not set to "Always". If it is, change it to either of the other two options
    4.     Make sure you do not have Restrictions turned on. If they are turned on, make sure that access is allowed for Safari, iTunes Store, Installing Apps, and Deleting Apps
    5.     Reset your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays sign back into iTunes and try again
    Cheers,

  • Blue screen will not complete hardware test

Hi I have a 2010 mid macbook pro with a blue screen no start up tried hardware yes and it stops at 95% what the heck any ideas?

Try to put the phone in recovery mode and restore it. If that does not work, take it in to an authorized service provider or Apple store for service. It is still under warranty.

  • About hardware test on Mountain Lion

I tried to hardware test few different way, as using (Hoding d, option+d and also same thing with usb).
    But nothing work.
Anyone know about how to try hardware test on Mac Pro with Mountain Lion?

try using Application Isntall DVD disc which came with your Mac Pro.
(as usual, to use AHT, hold down the D key when you start up your Mac Pro.)

I have Mac Pro late 2013, 6 cores, 16 Gb RAM, Yosemite. I have followed Apple instructions how to run hardware test. Both using D and Alt D at startup. Unplugged devices, plugged devices. The only thing I see is a row of languages and option to shut down or restart with black background I check English and hit return. After that nothing happens. Is there somone who could explain ?

  • Anybody know what my hardware test result code means?

My Macbook Pro 15" has been hanging and crashing a lot lately (just after applecare expired too!), I did a clean install and upgraded to 10.6, did the usual disk first aid (even checked for viruses) and after nothing helped, I finally ran hardware test from the install dvd and received the following error: 4MOT/2/400000004: Left side -3286; I know 4MOT is the logic board, but does anybody have any ideas what the rest means?

  • Hardware test macbook pro mavericks

Does anybody know how to make hardware test on a Macbook pro on Mavericks?

I have a MacBook Pro 8,2 early 2011 running Mavericks. I was unable to get Apple Hardware Test to run with the "d" key held down at boot. This is because there is no Apple Hardware Test on these machines. To run AHT you must have a .diagnostics folder (containing the correct AHT files) here: /System/Library/Core Services/.diagnostics
Here's how I was able to get AHT to work:
    1. You don't need to take any action from this page (I wrote it up below) but this is where I started:
    http://rivenbyfive.blogspot.com/2012/01/download-and-run-apple-hardware-test.htm l
there's a link on that page to go here to download many of the AHT DMGs:
    http://macforum.ro/comunitate/topic/1194-apple-hardware-test/
I downloaded the DMG for the 6,2 (here's the direct link to the DMG if you want). There is no AHT DMG for 8,2, but 6,2 worked fine for me:
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Hardware_Test/022-4597-A.dmg
Open the DMG and you'll see: System/Library/Core Services/.diagnostics
NOTE: If you can't see the .diagnostics (which is a hidden file) - any file with a dot in front of it is invisible in unix, so to see it you'll need to turn hidden files on. Here's a simple "show/hide invisibles" script I've been using forever and it has worked with Lion all the way up to Mavericks. I didn't write this simple script and I don't remember where I got it, but I've posted it up here, or you can find your own:
    http://bdpublic.s3.amazonaws.com/ted/view-invisible-files-finder-boolean.zip
open that zip and double click the script inside to show invisible files. (note: I keep this script in my ~/Library/Scripts folder). Now you can see .diagnostics in that Core Services folder in the DMG.
Go to System/Library/Core Services/ on your MBP (again, mine is the MBP 8,2 early 2011). Drag the .diagnostics folder from the Core Services folder in the DMG into the same folder (Core Services) on your mac. AHT is now "installed" in your system.
Reboot the Mac with "option D" held down (worked for me, maybe try just the "d" if that doesn't work) until you see the Apple Hardware Test icon in the center. The test showed my correct hardware, and I was able to successfully test my mac.
I hope this works for you.
last note: If you want to stop seeing invisible files just double click that script again.

  • G5 Full Speed Fans/ The Apple Hardware Tests Error Code

Since yesterday My DP1.8 G5's fans are max speed like jet engine. I tried PMU resets , Disk warrior. But nothing helps. The Apple Hardware Test gave me error code of "post/192/0" . Do you guys know what does this error code mean?
    Thank you.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
I think thast the error is related to the "Power On Self Test", or POST. When you start the machine, are there any beeps, or power button LED flashes? If there is a POST error at startup, the power LED would flash in cadence with the beeps..
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
Do you have any new RAM installed?
